26 Huh. Sort of prescient. I checked the date and this was 1922. We were coming out of the depression of '20-'21 and the skyscrapers were starting to go up, but they didn't look like this. Art Deco was in vogue. This is sort of starkly minimal - an unfortunate vision of the postwar future where the modernists got their hands on everything over ten stories for forty straight years and put up nothing but monoliths.

36 For subject matter, the painting is mildly interesting. For technical ability, I give the artist high praise. Not just in the rendering of the multiple, intersecting angles and perspectives, but it's tough to do repeated, consistent gradients in watercolors.

Would make a very nice magazine cover.

Buildings are art. Useful art, functional art, but art nonetheless. I firmly believe that architecture is art. Some is good, some is bad, some is conducive to humanity and some (like that depicted here) stifles it. But it's art in its own right. I think architecture would be a great addition to the art thread.

85 The future the left wants for us: Live in a 450 sqft apartment in a tower block, no parking, so no cars. Walk a mile and a half to an overcrowded "light rail" train, ride for 90 minutes, walk another mile to work, get paid peanuts to stack boxes of things only government workers can afford for Amazon, repeat commute in reverse, spend everything you made on vodka to numb the pain and emptiness. Avoid the advances of the opposite sex, since children mean you couldn't even afford the vodka anymore. Stand in a breadline for three hours. Finally get home, get three hours of sleep, repeat until you die.

This is sort of real. When I was in Bulgaria recently, I noticed this kind of phenomenon. There is a huge amount of block housing from the communist era. They all look like slums - decaying concrete and graffiti everywhere, but most aren't. You have to look for other clues - like the kinds of cars in the lot. And int he window, between the glass and the drapes, you see the way people attempt to make their living space less awful. Lots of plants. Some small murals on windows. Little touches to try to make the place less dreary and horrible.

It sucks. The Soviet (and US, though thankfully at smaller scales) approach to housing is inhuman. And it's going to take 50 more years before everything wears out to the point that it can be torn down and replaced on small budgets.

Yes. One of the wonderful things about big cities is the architecture, but ironically it's sometimes hard to get a good sense of it when you're driving around town, whereas if you try to stop and admire it, in many of these cities, you're not going to get out alive.

At the beginning of the riot season, Lileks posted some pics of favorite buildings in Minneapolis. Said something about wanting to preserve the memory, should they be destroyed.

123 I firmly believe that architecture is art. Some is good, some is bad, some is conducive to humanity and some (like that depicted here) stifles it. But it's art in its own right. I think architecture would be a great addition to the art thread.

124 Yes. One of the wonderful things about big cities is the architecture, but ironically it's sometimes hard to get a good sense of it when you're driving around town, whereas if you try to stop and admire it, in many of these cities, you're not going to get out alive. ...

If you've never been, I cannot recommend enough a trip to the city of Columbus, Indiana. It is an architectural treasure trove. The city is the home of Cummins. After the War, the city had a boom like most everywhere else. They put up a lot of crappy buildings. The Cummins leadership didn't like it. They wanted the city to be beautiful. And the president was an architecture buff.

He made a deal with the city and many other organizations that if they needed a new building - a school, a post office, a church, whatever - then he would pay for the architecture and engineering if only they would pay for the actual building. And if he got to pick the architect.

The city is like a living museum of postwar architecture. It is sensational. And it's also a nice place. I was treated very well in Columbus many times. There is a lot of pride of place there. The people who live there seem to know what they have and are happy to share it. Columbus, IN is a national treasure.

152 Sheeler was a Precisionist, a distinctly American style that took its inspiration (and name) from industry and technology. In a lot of Sheeler's mature works, he reduces the subject to its basic forms and media. In this work, I feel the heaviness and thickness of the massive skyscrapers. They are all packed in one on top of the other, and I feel small. Even though my vantage point is not street-level, but up a ways (10, 15 floors?), the buildings opposite still tower over me. There is no break, no sky for relief. Any background is pushed to the extreme edges, and even these are inhabited by more buildings. I don't know if this is NYC, I would not be surprised since NYC was the quintessential American city, but my first thought when I saw this was "This feels exactly like walking through NYC."

as far as LIV's go, probably right. But, among the many good things this does for the region, it also proves that the entire never trumping War Forever claims of Bolton, Mattis, Kristol, French, etc, and all of the rest of their circus have been pathetically and idiotically wrong, all the time.

Remember when they were claiming Trump should be impeached because he was "abandoning our allies" by pulling troops out of Syria, and that this was going to cause "endless chaos" in the region? Oh yeah, moving our embassy to Jerusalem was supposed to do that, too. And then even John Bolton said that Kushner was going to destroy everything because he refused to listen to the "Professionals" in the State Dep't, and that Trump was making a huge mistake by letting Kushner work on a peace deal.

So maybe it won't matter to the LIV's. It does prove that *everything* Trump's enemies have been saying for 4 years about his foreign policy has been absolutely and completely wrong.

And now 9 states have adopted "universal mail-in voting".

Here is a great example of this, from Austria. The people responsible should be in a stockade having rotten food thrown at them until they expire. This is a postmodern monstrosity literally swallowing the traditional and space-appropriate structures around it:

The world doesn't work the way they want it to, so they intend to punish it until it does.

It was ugly as all get-out and really took away from the classic lines of the building. Sorta like that glass pyramid monstrosity in front of the Louvre in gay Paree.

Again, why is this done? I suppose respect for anything that came before is dead these days. *long wistful sigh...*

Posted by: hogmartin at August 14, 2020 10:18 AM (t+qrx)

I was out talking a walk today at the park with Mr. Fenelon. Some people were wearing masks (we weren't) but nobody shouted at us and they all returned a wave or said "Hello" or "Have a blessed day!" back to me.

There was an old lady walking with a cane and she was unsteady on her feet. I think she must have had a stroke, because she had trouble speaking too. However, she had a grizzled old dog with her behaving very nicely on his leash. I asked her if I could pet the dog and she said "Yes" which I did, and I had a iced coffee in my hand and she said to the dog, "No; You can't have that. He wants to eat all kinds of things. I bet it gave her satisfaction to walk her dog even though she was slow and disabled. She obviously loved that dog and knew he needed a walk even if it was hard for her.

Great things at the park. The lake, beautiful big trees, and the large pink flowers. I don't know what they are-I call them "marshmallows" but my friend who was a retired botanist before he became a pastor says I frequently call plants by the incorrect name. l

McAleenan then altered the order of succession for other officials to succeed him after his departure.

"Because the incorrect official assumed the title of Acting Secretary at that time, subsequent amendments to the order of succession made by that official were invalid and officials who assumed their positions under such amendments, including Chad Wolf and Kenneth Cuccinelli, were named by reference to an invalid order of succession," GAO's general counsel Thomas Armstrong concluded.

oh, that piece of music - if you've ever heard that done live by a soprano who can do it well, it is beyond mesmerizing. A vocalist who do that piece as it was meant to be done has a talent so far above ordinary human talent that it takes one's breath away, it is humbling just to be in the presence of such a person.

It also shows why that particular Opera is so timeless; of course it has a silly plot and characters, those are inconsequential. It displays how Mozart was treating the Human Voice as a pure musical instrument, completely divorced from language, and the most beautiful musical instrument of all.

348 Huh.

That actually makes the painting more interesting. Cities definitely didn't look like that in 1922, so it's very forward-looking as you said.

I would highly recommend Jack Cashill's book on the subject, for anyone interested.

If...IF the Navy was involved, it's less a question of whether they covered up or not, it's more a matter of FBI and CIA doing so, on Bill Clinton's orders.

There were naval ships in the area, as well as a spotter plane, and I forget the details, but the pilot of that plane had some interesting testimony.

Anyhoo, silly joke here, but a serious topic about how the government can and probably DOES sew narratives to suit their needs.

Ice cream giant Good Humor has enlisted the help of the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA to come up with a new song for ice cream trucks to replace "Turkey in the Straw."

"Turkey in the Straw," one of the most recognizable ice cream truck jingles, dates back to the 19th century and has racist roots - including first becoming popular in blackface minstrel shows.

While Good Humor didn't create the jingle, or any others, and hasn't operated any ice cream trucks since the 1970s, the company said it wanted to use its influence to come up with a solution and help move the industry forward.

My theory is, none of these people ever go into this thinking they're going to rise to the top. Not the Clintons, not the Obamas, not Kamala... none of them.

They just sorta fall into it, and somehow, some way their greedy desire for power pushes them upwards, into higher and higher levels of it.

Eventually they develop contempt for everyone else, because they truly know how petty and stupid and mean they really are. So if they get to the top, what does that say about the rest of us? Worthless ants, who deserve what they can give us, good and hard.

Unfortunatley, the US Constitution mandates some type of postal service. With that said, they are a poisoned bureaucracy just like the rest of the government. Mail volume is going down. Has been for years thanks to online bill pay, email, etc. So how is it that they are overwhelmed and can't deliver on time?
When you look at the great minds in logistics - look at how well Walmart, Home Depot - hell even Fedex, UPS, etc. do -- you wonder why the USPS can't duplicate this. Oh wait. Government rules and regs, unions, etc.

Not too long ago we were having problems in he neighborhood, the carrier leaving packages in the wrong boxes (it's a central box, with package slots, he leaves a key in your box to the package slots when you have one). Neighbors going to each other's houses to drop off the packages clearly marked for the other person.

I think enough of us complained, he hasn't done it anymore that I've noticed for a couple months now.

We had a mailman for years who did the same thing. At the time we lived on a cul de sac so Guinness would jump in the truck with him and ride all the way around 'til they got back to the house. Then Jim would give him a treat and he'd jump out.

Then Jim went on vacation once and Guinness went racing to the truck and jumped right in. The substitute mail lady was terrified and maced the poor dog. After that, he wouldn't get in the truck again, but Jim would always stop and give him a treat and a pat on the head.

The preservationists threatened to
sue if the city razed the old one. The compromise was to preserved the
old facade and put the modern structure behind it and connect the two
with a large lobby.

the university i went to had difficulty getting permission to build new buildings. instead, they would raze old structures except for the facade, and totally rebuild them, keeping the old facade attached. this turned a new building into a renovation, which was allowed under the restrictions they were dealing with.

And I do appreciate USPS's modernizations; you can subscribe to a morning email that shows scans of all of the pieces of mail you're getting that day. Handy if your mailbox is relatively far away from the house and you want to know if it's worth bothering to start the car and go get the mail.

We're developing a caste system.

To be a politician, you have to be upper middle class, preferably related to an existing politician or "public servant", attend an Ivy League school with Harvard, Yale, and Columbia strongly preferred, do internships, make contacts, go straight out of school to a congressional staff job, DC law firm, media organ, or policy think tank for a few years, then run for office.

I would say that anyone with this background should be disqualified. Why? Because they are not capable of the core function of representative government.

How can you successfully represent a people you've spent your entire life apart from and fundamentally do not understand?

I had a UPS driver who delivered to the shop in TX who was elderly but spry. He was always bragging about how he had more packages each day than the FedEx Ground driver on the same route. But when the FedEx guy would drive off, he'd start bitching about how many packages he had, and how heavy they were, and how his old bones ached because of slinging 60 lb boxes etc. Annoyed the hell out of me.

So I started acting all giddy and cheerful when we had lots of deliveries (deliveries meant work, which meant I could pay the rent). Pissed him off something serious.
