Race and (Trans)gender, Race and (Trans)gender [KT]

gendrrv.jpg

It was only January when we first posted the photo above of a gender reveal that went too far. Since then, there have been many other instances of people going to far regarding race and gender. There is one bit of good news. We need it.

Going too far: Race and Music Theory

This is happening at the University of North Texas College of Music:

UNT's Journal of Schenkerian Studies is under investigation following calls from around the country for it to be shuttered and for one of its advisers, UNT music theory professor Timothy Jackson, to be fired. The journal's sin? Following criticism by scholar Philip Ewell that 19th century music theorist Heinrich Schenker, whose influence on music theory is "hard to overstate," was an "ardent racist and German nationalist," the journal presented an edition including debate among scholars on racial issues and music theory. . .

The graduate students claimed that Jackson had used the journal "to promote racism" by defending the music theorist after Ewell wrote that Schenker's "racist views infected his music theoretical arguments." Jackson's article, one of several defending the composer in the 2019 edition of the journal, contextualized Schenker and his changing views on race, which were partially due to the rise of Nazi Germany. (Schenker was Jewish; his wife was arrested by the Nazi regime and died in Theresienstadt concentration camp.)

More here.

You can now cancel a college professor for suggesting that music theory (based on writings of a Jewish guy whose wife died in a Nazi concentration camp) is not as white supremacist as another college professor claims?

How did we get to this point? Of course, "cancel culture" has been going on against conservatives for a long time, but it's kind of a new thing to see liberals and leftists suddenly becoming targets.

Critical Social Justice

Helen Pluckrose is one of the liberals involved in the series of hoax studies which was intended to reveal the corruption of the field of "grievance studies". Late last month, she did an interview for Spiked in which she discussed the dangerous explosion of critical social justice. She did a brief synopsis of how this ideology developed:

These ideas arose in the late 1960s, when people from different disciplines suddenly started saying they were sceptical of meta-narratives, that knowledge was a social construct, and that language could not convey meaning reliably. There was a critical attitude towards everything we thought we knew. This was a really aimless development, because if you do not believe language can meaningfully convey anything, you cannot really use language to change anything. As a result, this movement burnt itself out by the middle of the 1980s.

But around 1989 there was another flood of new writing, in which people . . . all started saying postmodernism had some useful tools, but was not very good for activism. There had to be some kind of objective truth, if we were going to say certain people in a certain place are disadvantaged. They all wanted to use the idea of social constructivism, but also identified power structures that they felt were objectively real. That was a dramatic change. Then came intersectionality, queer theory, critical-race theory and later disability studies and fat studies. . .

. . . We have gone from a scepticism towards meta-narratives to a social justice meta-narrative. And that has been escalating, particularly in the last five years, and especially this year.

spiked: What are the most revealing examples of this trend?

Pluckrose: One key example is cancel culture. We have had all these different marginalised identities for a little while. But in the last year or so, things have been refining, and now we are really looking at two key identities. Activists are not so worried about women as a sex anymore. This is evident from all the Karen memes. Similarly, activists feel gay men are not consistently being intersectional, and have lost some of their interest in the gay identity cause. What we have ended up with is race and transgender.

Ed Driscoll picked up a sensible point from The Dispatch this morning. It focuses on the Washington Post's decision to capitalize both White and Black as "distinct cultural and ethnic groups". Totally binary.

At some point in the future people will look back at how the left made two contradictory arguments at the same time. When it comes to sexual identity, the word has gone forth to oppose "artificial" categories, "false binaries," etc. People can define themselves sexually without any regard to medical science, never mind tradition or political or cultural orthodoxy. I've lost count of how many genders there are now. Just last week, CNN was so scared of using the word "women" it tweeted that "Individuals with a cervix are now recommended to start cervical cancers screening at 25 ..."

Meanwhile, when it comes to race, it's all about new artificial categories and enforced binaries. White people who pretend they're black are committing theft. Heck, white people who cook non-white food or pay homage to non-white art forms are committing theft. Cultural appropriation is evil. But gender appropriation is something to be celebrated. Biological males can collect all the women's track and field awards and that's fine. But don't you dare wear dreadlocks if you're not black? . .

A little good news on the transgender front?

There may be some signs of actual thought about this issue coming from the UK, reported in Quillette. It's about time:

In recent months, a sense has emerged that the tide might finally be starting to turn in the gender debate: Things that most everyone believes to be true, but that no one has been allowed to say, are now increasingly being said by writers, lawmakers, and litigants.

Certainly, the battle is still far from over. CNN is referring to women as "individuals with a cervix." Last month, J.K. Rowling was trolled yet again for stating ordinary views about men and women (though thankfully, the media is no longer getting away with defaming her). And best-selling children's author Gillian Phillip has been sacked by her publisher, Working Partners, because she added the hashtag #IStandWithJKRowling to her Twitter bio. But at least now, in mid-2020, these acts attract growing criticism.

J. K. Rowling did take some heavy hits recently. Some of them quite hysterical, to use an old sexist term. Someone wrote that her transphobia put me in danger.

Daniel Radcliffe wrote

"Transgender women are women," he wrote. "Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo (Rowling) or I."

NPR suggested that her tweets made the magic of Harry Potter fade. And the NYT suggested that fans try to reimagine Harry Potter's world without its creator.

Back to the Quillette piece. The author, Julian Vigo, does an overview of how thinking about transgenderism got so extreme. Very much worth reading. The ACLU has not been the friend of the American family on this issue. The universities have not been the only culprits.

Then come some signs of change:

That's why it's significant that the website of Britain's National Health Service (NHS)--the umbrella group for the country's publicly-funded healthcare systems--has removed the prominent, once-numerous references to Mermaids from its online materials. Mermaids is a charity that has long identified its constituency as "transgender children" and their parents, but which long ago focused on pushing for the most rapid possible transition of the highest possible number of children, with the fewest number of safeguards. As the notorious case of a seven-year-old boy who was removed from his mother's care shows, there really seems to be no line the group won't cross in this regard. (One particularly memorable Mermaids moment came when the organization promoted an article on transgender children supposedly written by two academics named Natacha Kennedy and Mark Hellen. It later turned out to have been written by a single person, who, bizarrely, then appeared under two different names on the Goldsmiths University of London website--one male, the other female, naturally.)

Look for any mention of Mermaids today on the NHS site, and you're likely to find the pages are gone. The BBC, too, seems to have wiped away references to Mermaids from its list of "Gender Identity" "Information and Support" resources, which listed Mermaids prominently until last month. This has unfolded during the same period when the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation, which provides mental-health services to children, is facing a lawsuit from a former patient who says she was rushed into an aggressive, and ultimately destructive, program of hormone therapy. A former psychiatric nurse at Tavistock is making related legal claims, alleging the provision of drugs to children as young as nine. Numerous clinicians have resigned in protest at such policies. And it may be the case that lawyers at the BBC and NHS are simply seeking to protect their clients from legal exposure.

LEGAL EXPOSURE. That seems to me to be a key to the change. But there is much more. Changes have been occurring on several fronts. Take a look.

Which brings us back to J.K. Rowling, who recently responded to an article describing women as "people who menstruate" by Tweeting, "'People who menstruate.' I'm sure there used to be a word for those people." The fierce onslaught she received has served as a wake-up call, even for those who have not been following the debate closely.

In a culture war, which side are you going to pick--the beloved children's author tweeting common sense, or the angry mob demanding that women be defined in language according to their bodily discharge? It's what some feminists now look back on as their "peak trans moment"--that instant when you realize that we are being gaslit by extremists who rely on hyperbolic language, pseudoscience, exaggerated suicide statistics, and social-media mob campaigns, all the while pretending to represent the forces of universal love and toleration. . .

The way this struggle has developed has been so stupid. I saw some of the recent attacks on Rowling myself on social media. They attacked her even for her responses to attacks on her.

It's not over . . .

9 Things like this are what seem to me to be undeniable proof of demonic activity in the world today. The widespread insistence that words no longer mean what they say, that obvious reality is malleable while ill-defined ideas are concrete, etc. just serve to prove that something out there really, really hates objective truth.

No "professional health care association" -- (what the hell does that mean?) -- can redefine biology.

A man calling himself a woman is not a woman.

A woman calling herself a man is not a man.

Period.

How in the world did those two statements become "politically incorrect" or "socially incorrect" in 2020?

A child sometimes thinks/pretends he's a dog or a bear or a dinosaur. Do we now go full-Jurassic Park on children and inject them with whatever to try to turn them into dinosaurs?

What a stupid and dangerous time to be alive that it is the socially correct thing to do to encourage and promote this "transgender" madness.

Antonin Scalia warned everyone in his dissent in 2002 Lawrence v Texas that the ruling was going to open the door to the slippery slope of allowing all forms of derangement. He was right.

21 The UNT thing is hilarious.

One of the most basic ideas in classical music theory is that in a piece of tonal music, some notes are more important than others. In a symphony in C major, C is obviously the most important note, and there's a kind of hierarchy where G is the next most important and C# is relatively unimportant.

Along comes a young black scholar, with a head full of Critical Race Theory to say that this musical hierarchy is racist and oppressive.

A handful of older white professors take him inartfully to task. One of them acknowledges that academic music theory is very white, but explains this by saying that it's because not many black households "profoundly value classical music."

And since it's 2020, the entire pathetic field sides with the black guy talking nonsense, even people in their 50s and 60s who should know better.

That right there is why none of us should be cheering on the failure of places like New York City. Because all it will do is force NYC "progressives" to leave New York and take their values and voting habits to other areas.

Right now, when left-wing cities are healthy-ish, we can accept that states like New York and California and Washington and Oregon will be Blue.

But when people start leaving those states to go to better states, but bring their Democrat voting habits with them, that's not good. Just spreads the progressive virus throughout the country instead of keeping it isolated to the coasts. Think of California liberals moving to Arizona and turning AZ Blue.

So yeah, we better hope that places like NYC and Seattle and Portland get their shit together, otherwise we're facing a spread of progressive voters from those areas to the rest of the country.

Told ya.

Posted by: Pythagoras at August 08, 2020 11:51 AM (UAMe5)

75 Music theory is the study of music.
First comes the music, it is either pleasing to us or it isn't.
The study of those 2 things and all gradients in between is music theory.
Like studying human anatomy. First comes the human and all of the parts, then comes the study of what is what, what we call them, and what they do.

102 I was at small Trump rally (about 75-100) today of people in Central/NW Jersey, not too far from where he has his house on the golf course. Since I only know a few people IRL-You guys are all real, but mostly not near me ) who support Trump it was great to be around people waving flags, wearing Trump shirts and talking about their support. It's good to see young people there no, so not every millennial supports Biden or socialism. Anyway, there was some Mennonite woman and her family selling Trump shirts and hats and flags. She had one with an LGBT sign and that stood for "Liberty, Guns, Booze and Trump" with little symbols underneath it. I wouldn't buy that, and I didn't have much anyway, so I bought a little bumper sticker-Pray for 45 (since he's the 45th President) My car is so beat up it wouldn't look much worse if it got keyed.

Some other woman had a shirt which said on the front "Another deplorable for Trump" and on the back -in a reference to Jaws "Looks like we'll need a bigger basket."
I laughed and she and I had a nice conversation.. FenSpouse said "Why don't we buy the flag with Trump as Rambo?" He was kidding. My response-You'd have to live in some very rural area where you had a half a mile driveway to put that up, and probably the LGBT one.

123 The PsyOp Warfare has gotten so crazy, so duplicitous one day to the next, that I'm more interested in the Tim Pool type observations ... that "they" are doing this intentionally.

Ace linked to that Pool video yesterday (?) regarding the willful destruction of NYC. Is it the converse of gas-lighting? Because they are not making beautiful gas lit streets, they are gassing us with plandemic, or blowing up small business either literally or via the shutdowns. Normal social gatherings are also blown out of the water.

Many suggest it is to counter the coming indictments, which may be part of the current battle. But the overall thrust is the globalists feeling (rightfully?) they have us in their vice grip, and they keep turning the screws now, despite the nuisance of Trump and his chastisement of their ongoing bureaucratic overthrow.

70 years of Soviet style infiltration, then the last 40 with China getting in on that subversive infiltration warfare. There are many powerful and wealthy enemies roaming freely on our streets, and throughout our institutions. the fourth turning, or new renaissance/enlightenment? idk, much of it is happening online ... like right here.

What is frightening are the leftists (and some on the right) who have taken a position, and then twist themselves in a jumbled mess of contradictory beliefs, and still pretend they're operating with honesty and integrity.

You can't be both a feminist and a trannyist. You can't. And Rowling is one of the few of the former who are publicly making this point.

Queer/Transitioning
Transgender
Intersex
Polyamorous/Bi/Pan
Ace/Aro/Agender/Ally
Lesbian/Gay

Past generations thought up solutions to cure polio, to further develop radar to win WWII, to use oil to create asphalt to build America's roads, etc.

This generation spends their time calling men women and creating acronyms to normalize people with mental disorders.

199 Both Harry Potter and Star Wars are incredibly derivative, and use an ancient plot line long ago established and used in hundreds if not thousands of stories.

In fact, Neil Gaiman put out a comic roughly the same time Harry Potter came out about a young wizard in an abusive household who was disvoered and went to a magical academy, was the chosen one, rode on a skateboard that flew instead of a broom, etc. Dozens of parallels. No connection and no plagiarism, just the same kind of idea.

There's been so many books about a young person going to a public (what we call private) school in England and having a rough time while triumphing you could fill a bookshelf.

In this instance 'counseling' = grooming

I forget her name, but there's the one out in Californica (probably appears in one of the links KT posted above). She's very instrumental in the push toward drugs and surgery for adolescents and pre-adolescents.

Works at one of the big hospitals out there, Cedar or whatever.

She's kind of the Grand Poobah of the trannies, and somehow some way she wormed her way into a position of power, so anyone who opposes her, docs who object to her methods, can be cancelled. Simply for saying mutilating children might not be a good idea (using words other than mutilating).

So yeah, I guess if one is wanting a slot in the priesthood of the left, there are some professions that afford one a better shot at rising up the hierarchy.

The honest answer is: Informed consent.

If you are working with someone, they ought to be able to lay out up front, exactly what they're doing, what the purpose is, and what is the outcome they are seeking.

It should all be above board, and there should be a lot of "checking in" to see how whatever it is they are doing is working for you.

If it seems like what they are doing goes against what you want, then that ought to be clear, and they BETTER have a good, justifiable reason for doing it... with an ultimate outcome they are seeking being for YOUR long term benefit, even if you can't see it.

And... if the person seems to be really really trying to get you to like them, run. Run away. Because you are paying for THEIR therapy, not yours.

246 re: Adolescent Medicine, it is sort of an odd mash-up of Pediatrics and Psychology.

The adolescent age range is, medically speaking, probably the healthiest phase of life. Congenital issues have largely declared themselves by pre-school years while degenerative disorders have not yet set in. So a large component of the "conditions" dealt with in adolescents consists of non-diseases, mostly maladaptive psychological issues related to the transition period between childhood and adulthood.

At the same time, physicians who go into Adolescent Medicine usually train as Pediatricians and then branch off into Adolescent Medicine. I think that many of them bring a mindset of their patient as 'the innocent child', a protective mindset. Rather than being a guide or mentor to help the child grow into a functioning productive adult, they become (in their mind) a shield protecting the eternal child from consequences of their (the child's) decisions.

Just as the old saying goes, that most psychologists enter the field seeking a diagnosis or treatment, I suspect many Adolescent Medicine docs may have unresolved adolescent issues of their own and run the risk of projecting their own psyche onto the teen.

Another factor is that a large portion of the "Science" in the field of Adolescent Medicine is based solely on self-reported questionnaires, which are fraught with internal bias and distortions. Ask a teenager to report honestly on drug use and what sort of responses would you expect to get?

Anything that has as its purpose cataloging your relationships with other people and enabling your expansion of those relationships to ever larger groups of people is going to be spyware. So facebook, tindr, twitter, linkedin, all of them are used to build up databases of people in mass. Then they can quantify how external stimulus like "news", "polls", "entertainment", etc.. effects that population's reaction.

Once you derive a decent model of that system the stimuli is then adjusted to get whatever reaction or outcome the elite want. The people are just a fairly dumb black-box element of a closed loop control system used to build the elitist's "cloud city" future.

It's something of an oversimplification, but the vast majority of psychological problems that emerge in adolescence are misdiagnosed as either A. Adult diagnoses, inappropriately applied, or 2. Something that can be medicated.

Or both.

In large part, the "treatment" is more abuse, and it does a GREAT job of teaching kids to use drugs to solve their problems.

So yeah, all that unresolved childhood trauma... both the patient and the treatment provider, does not get addressed.

If there is no suicidal intent, we should just go with counselling, when there is, it's a tougher call, and discharge is always dicey.

The conventional training in Adolescent Medicine is that teens won't be honest if the parent is in the room, so there should be an opportunity to interview the patient separate from the parents. While there is potentially some validity to this, it tends to evolve into exclusion of the parents, and a (oftentimes unhealthy) rapport between the doctor and the teen. Our Little Secret™ can be a detriment.

A doctor with integrity and benign intent can navigate that tricky calculation. Some, if not many, see that bond as giving them the right to usurp parental rights.

Obviously it is different for a 12-13 year old compared to a 17 year old.

Yeah. The kids therapists say they cannot talk about what they talk to the kids about, because then they won't open up to them.

How's my kid doing, then?

He/she is doing well.

Okay, why am I still bringing the child here.

If your kid broke a leg, you would expect a doctor to say here is the fracture, here is the treatment, here is how long you can expect these symptoms, and here is how you can help with homecare.

Psychologist, psychiatrists, and therapists say "I am going to disappear into this room with your child for an hour, and, sorry, I cannot tell you what goes on in there. For privacy."

Yeah, no.

Startlingly, most kids did not object to the parents knowing what was going on. Many were just afraid to do it alone. And there were some parents who just did not give a shit or who were as disappointed as the kid was that she was not better looking, more popular, not going to more parties (even when those parties involved drugs or alcohol). I had one parent who refused to pick up her son (grieving the loss of his dad to cancer) because she wanted to attend a quilt conference in another state.

Yes.

One of the major problems with mental health care is an insanely narrow focus on the person being "treated."

Nobody gets sick in a vacuum, and nobody gets well in one. So ANY time someone is hospitalized, generally their recovery only starts once they're discharged.

In other words, medication management is only the start of the process. Whatever gets done in the hospital... it might or might NOT work in the real world, and there's a good chance it won't, because a huge part of the problem with the individual is that world.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at August 08, 2020 02:03 PM (YynYJ)

I would suggest, any father who does not have custody of his child(ren) needs to stay as involved as he can, not necessarily in the sense of being someone who gives the kid things, but continues to let them know, however they can, that they care about their kids, that they love them, and will be there for them HOWEVER he can.

If the kid grows up knowing this, even if he/she doesn't see much of their dad, the relationship has a chance to blossom AFTER mom no longer controls who the kid gets to see.

The hard part is for the dad to see this, not as a right/privilege for him, as some way to fulfill his own needs, but to see it as a responsibility he had to his child. He'll be rewarded... someday. Maybe not even on Earth, but someday, his actions will bear fruit.

Posted by: Muldoon at August 08, 2020 01:56 PM (Fc5rx)

It would. And meds were rarely the answer.

Societal: the need to conform to a physical type or social type

Familial: Parents who are so wrapped up in themselves that they don't see the kid anymore.

Schools: See societal, because school is where all the unrealistic expectations really take root. Now with this "spectrum" stuff, I fear for kids at even young ages.

Cultural: Schools parents. If you have interests that do not fit the mold, there's something wrong with you. Kids need strong parents who can encourage a kid to follow their interests, or not be afraid of perceived rejection. Even the "cool kids" are insecure adolescents. There is little guidance at any level.

"Back in the day" when I was a kid you had a lot more freedom to explore your interests, participate in your religious group, and it was OK. Now the stabilizing factor of youth groups is something to "live down", and having contrary opinions is despised. It's hard to find a niche when these are not really available any more.

I think some of this stability from religious groups has been undermined for the elderly too, with the rise of "senior centers" where diversity is the oder of the day. An important thing for many seniors is the freedom to reminisce and share experiences, to reconcile the end of life with it's beginning. That is harder to do now.

She started cheating with one of his friends, who she married and has a couple of kids with. He was still dealing with his mom's death and the girlfriend wouldn't let any of us see the boy. So he gave up.

This time, when the relationship fell apart, he managed to make arrangements with the mom. She's not as vindictive and realizes it's good for the boy to be with his dad. Stepson rented a place down the road and he sees his son every Wednesday and other times. He's stuck in that town but it's worth it to be with his son.

It is almost amazing that at the same time they are doing a lot of shit that a government should NOT do, they are refusing to do the few things a government is actually for.

364 Looks like college football is going dark next week - the Power 5 will supposedly follow the MAC in cancelling Fall sports. 368 My husband's nephew had a successful marriage, with his, hers and their kids. The marriage fell apart. He met a woman with a couple of kids. Her husband was in jail. The older son does drugs and is in and out of jail. But her daughter is a young teen. I think he may have saved her. She has a stable family and lives a normal life, doing things like riding horses. We'll have to see if it's enough as she moves to adulthood.

"Increasingly, beholding one another in the street - masked, visored, alert for the slightest incursion into our personal six foot of space, jumping out of our skins at the slightest cough, sniffle or sneeze - it is becoming clear that we no longer look upon one another and perceive the iconic shape of the human being in history - limbs, trunk, head, face, gaze, smile - but see instead a moving blob of festering matter, biofluids, glands, adipoctytes, viruses, microbiota, fungi, yeasts, acids, maggots, phage, proteins, stool and mucus-oozing, sweating, belching, snorting, wind-breaking, weeping, puking, seeping, urinating, excreting organisms riddled with mostly imperceptible orifices, from which are expelled unpleasant and deadly liquids, substances, gases, odours and pathogens. To paraphrase the Killers' song, are we human or are we (bio)hazard?

How strange that, while emotional incontinence is increasingly valued and praised, physical human effusions are ever more anathematised. Where once human beings aspired to being gods, we now appear to have entered the final phase of our self- degradation: perceiving ourselves predominantly as a pestilence on the earth."
