So Do We Have to Talk About Whether Aliens Are Real, Or What?

Personally, I'm still a Hard No.

Or maybe that's too strong. Let's say I'm a Hard Nyah.

But little would surprise me at this point.

It's also possible that there's not.

Neither would surprise me.

The reason is all life on Earth basically uses the same code for DNA / RNA ---> proteins.

So no past visits, unless we are all from alien DNA.

16 The popular theory out there for quite a while has been...

Could aliens exist? Sure.
But... it's such a huge universe, we'd be as hard for them to find as they are for us to find.

So who knows, and we're extremely unlikely to find out before quite a few millennia if and what is truly out there.

Did they visit the US in flying saucers we managed to shoot down with 1950s technology? LOL Hell no.

I'm guessing if there's alien life out there, it is either so alien we barely will recognize it as life, or so primitive its not flying around the universe in space ships. Or both.

47 Look at how far we have come in 100 years and what we could do in 1000 let alone 1bil years.

Humans have been building civilization for at least 5000 years, and only in the last 200 have we really gotten anywhere with it. Why? Because we've been in an ahistorical period of climatic stability and comfort, combined with a shocking lack of truly heinous plagues and diseases.

This kind of development could have happened 50 times before in the past, but did not because every time we started to get somewhere, something awful came along to obliterate it.

The odds of that happening again far, far, far outnumber the odds of us continuing on this path.

118 While I'm a solid agnostic as to whether or not there is alien life out there somewhere in the Universe, what I'm dubious about is this:

That the alien life is any any way comparable to human life in technological development, size, and metal powers.

The odds of an aliens being approximately human-sized (or even mouse-sized or elephant-sized) seem exceedingly unlikely. The aliens might be the size of an amoeba, or the size of a galaxy. Or anything in hetween. Maybe they're quantum-sized. Who knows?

Also, what ae the odds that they're about as smart and devleoped as us? This is but a brief moment in life's history. The aliens might be as wise and smart as gods, or as primitive as a bacterium. Or anything in between. "Almost human-like_ is seemingly the LEAST likely possibility.

So: if there is life, I'd bet it is retarded amoebas, or god-like supra-beings. But not "little green men."

119 In the 40's, 50's and 60's only governments had the money to create technology that would result in unusual flying objects. In fact, we had functioning UAVs in the 50's.
But now private parties have the funds to create their own R&D efforts and given the rapid development of stuff like quad copters, anything is possible. There is likely all kinds of flying objects that are unmanned and capable of outstanding things.

So. No.
No space-based shit.

203 Netflix' reboot of the classic Robert Stack show Unsolved Mysteries is far less show biz than the original featuring hour long investigations of unusual suspected crimes as opposed to three or four stories in an hour on the original usually one of which was Bigfoot, ghosts, lake monsters or aliens. I was disappointed, therefore, to find that one episode was devoted to a series of alien abductions in 1969.

204 Current science has concluded that the conditions that exist here on earth that allowed for life, and then intelligent life, to evolve are exceedingly rare and statistically unlikely to repeat very often. So many chance events happened to pan out just the right way, events that have astronimical odds of happening in just such a way as to enable us to have evolved. The probability of this happening often or even again at all is staggeringly low. Its the scientific equivalent of winning powerball dozens of times in a row. We are either the product of mind boggling good fortune or intelligent design.

310 The more we discover, the less applicable the Drake equation is. There are just so many ways for things to go wrong and be inhospitable to life. For example, the question used to be "how many earth sized planets at XXX km from a sun of size YYY exist?" Turns out that's not even remotely enough. The planet needs a molten iron core, itself an anomaly, so as to create a magnetic shield from the solar wind. How many other potentially life-excluding factors have we not even considered?

331 Regarding life (as we know it) here on Earth, there are multiple factors that enable such which are probably rare to put it mildly in the universe. We're perfectly located away from The Sun in a green zone. We have a mid sized moon that not only acts as a meteor shield but also provides tides so water doesn't go stagnant and its gravitation pull created consistent seasons for life to adapt to. Also, Jupiter acts as meteor shield as well as I understand it.
On the other hand, I look at images like the Hubble Deep Field and I think to myself that statistically there just HAS to be something out there. That can be anything from microbes or galactic civilizations.

The Milky Way is home to hundreds of such planets, to the bewilderment of cosmologists. The 3010 Galactic Survey of Planets revealed that 4.6 percent of the 24,168 known planets are APPLEs ["Alien Planet Perplexingly Like Earth"]. Given the laws of physics and the distribution of matter and energy in the universe, cosmologists expected that less than 0.1 percent of all planets would meet the APPLE criteria. This puzzling discrepancy prompted the development of the controversial cosmological theory known as the Strong Misanthropic Principle, which asserts that the universe exists in order to screw with us.

458 The speculation is that there are billions of stars in our galaxy, plenty would support life.

But of those billions of stars, scientists say only about 1/3 at most are capable of supporting life

Then there's the kind of life. How far along are they? What if we're the most advanced beings in the galaxy? How many advanced civilizations destroyed themselves through wars or were destroyed by planetary disasters? How many advanced and decided, "fuck it, we've done enough". How many thought planetary socialism was a great idea?

If they're advanced enough to travel, why travel here? The sun is a minor star sitting way out in the boonies as far as the galaxy goes.

538 Ace,I flew with CDR Dave Fravor both in the A-6 Fleet Replacement Squadron (VA-12 as a fellow newly minted Naval Aviator, and then as part of the same air wing deployed aboard USS Ranger. He is the most straightforward, no BS guy you would ever meet and not prone to flights of fancy. I have talked with him about this incident many times over the last few years and his descriptions of the flight characteristics are not those of any craft using Bernoulli to stay airborne. His story has been corroborated by both wingman and battlegroup sensor operators. If it ain't off world stuff, then we as a nation are screwed as somebody has something for which we have no defense nor offense. He makes no claims about where it came from, only that at no point could he achieve any sort of offensive position - on the contrary, at any time, if it had had offensive intentions, he would have had no ability to defend himself. This is the true intention of his public statements on the record - to inform the national defense community and the nation as a whole that we are second fiddle to some technology operating within our operating environments.

539 Not sure why it added an emoji instead of an 8 - should be VA-128 or Attack Squadron One Twenty Eight.

Space aliens? Who gives a fuck? It's a distraction, like bigfoot, or
that stupid scottish nessie. Anarchists are running amok, we're
allegedly undergoing a pocket change shortage, and I'm supposed to wear a
rag over my mug when I go into a store I'm not even robbing, and people
give a shit about ufos? Focus pocus, people!

Scottish Nessie says:
Oy you--'belongs-on-a-party platter' Yea, you:You whinge about all this shite --whilst i paddle about nekkid in my private loch w/o a care in the world--and you call ME stupid??
See if you get an invite to my pool party.

542 I feel like if Alien life existed, the chance it would have come to this planet - while we were here - would be akin to me running into a specific ant on earth somewhere.

Throughout the age of the universe, they would have to be able to travel here, and travel here at this very moment.

Not that it couldn't happen, but man.. its a big universe and its been a long time.
