Ah, a common reaction. There are only two differences between this kid's experience and mine at the same observation:
- I knew what the line items were, because my dad warned me in advance that I was going to be pissed - I swore a lot more where I could be heard by my parents Nothing like those line items on your first pay stub to act as one hell of a wake-up call. Doubly so when you consider that: - Your first paycheck ever is usually small, and thus the percentages will *never* get better - Your employer is forbidden to show you (forbidden by law) that he *also* had to pay the same amount in SS/Medicare taxes on your behalf and that is *also* money you didn't get to put in your pocket. I remember my "political awareness" began the first day I earned a paycheck as a bagboy for Harris Teeter back in the late 90's.
I worked as early as the age as 12 for family friend's businesses like a bus boy for a restaurant, worked at a bike shop after school assembling bicycles... But the bagboy job was the first official job. I had calculated up my hours against my wage and thought "yes, I'll have plenty of cash to buy this portable CD player for my car!" Got the check and couldn't believe how much the government stole from me. Needless to say I didn't get that CD Player like I had hoped. That was the day I became aware of who was taking this money from me. Posted by: Defenestratus at July 27, 2020 01:35 PM (9V81o) 50

To be fair and balanced I remember my MIL arguing with my mom over Medicare premiums. She believed that Medicare was totally free when you turned 65. Could not believe the government would take Medicare premiums out of SS forever. Finally showed her a SS check stub this was back in the day of mailed checks. The FDR generation believed everything from the government was free. Until it was not.

I'm not a fan of the "that's life" lesson. No. Stay mad that the government is stealing from your paycheck. The government thinks you shouldn't get to decide where your money goes. You're too stupid to be allowed control over your income and property. We are all slaves at the will of our government, living under the fear that we'll miss a payment or interest and BAM. There go our homes and our lives. We can't pay it off, like a mortgage or a loan. Nope, we are forever in debt to the government. Our children and their children, too. What has the government done with this theft? Only created more chains upon its citizenry. The ever widening maw that eats up our income, property, and freedom.

The VAT is the most cynical, opaque and disastrous method of taxation. I could be talked into a national sales tax as a complete replacement for the existing tax code, but I cannot be talked into a VAT. A VAT is designed to use incomplete information, assumptions, guesswork and utter opacity to rook the citizenry out of money without even so much as a trace of accountability. A VAT is perhaps the worse form of taxation, worse than income and property taxes.

Proving this isn't a new phenomenon, there was a scene in the Three Stooges with the exact same reaction: It showed them winning the lottery or something for $50,000. They finally got their check in the mail, which showed all the taxes deducted, reducing their winnings to $5. --------------------- An old Bugs Bunny cartoon had s similar gag. IIRC, Elmer Fudd has a rich relative who wants to will his money to Elmer. But said relative doesn't like animals being "mistreated". Bugs, of course, takes full advantage of that. At the end of the short, Elmer finally gets the inheritance. But the government taxes are so high that he doesn't get any money. Instead, he ends up owing money to the government. Yeah, I used to think that the only way I'd accept any sales tax would be to replace the income tax, codified into the constitution so it takes an amendment to change. But if the Democrats get back into power, they're just going to implement what they want regardless of what the constitution says.

Posted by: Cato, Collectivism Delenda Est at July 27, 2020 02:12 PM (J+mig) ++++++++++++++ Yup, that's where the "only on new goods and services" comes in. Otherwise, it's double taxation. Brand new house? Brand new car? Tax. Used house? Used car? No tax. Some things - like food and medical care - are always new. But you can grow your own food if you want. But it will make it easy to remove consent through minimizing consumption or consuming in the used market wherever possible (and also other side effects, like durability being a major factor on major goods). Taxes on businesses' assets and profits are a hidden tax that the customer never sees, but pays every penny indirectly. Same with my favorite, taxes on utilities. The electric or phone company will pay any stupid tax that the government puts on them, because they just pass it along. Case in point, the Obamaphone tax. We're still paying that, by the way. Every cell phone bill you pay has a little charge to pay for other peoples' Obamaphones. But at least they itemize that one; many business taxes are completely indirect and the consumer never sees that your money he pays for the item actually goes to the government, not to the seller.

Today is Midland, TX there is a school board hearing to change the
name of Robert E. 2. Assuming the new EU budget is approved, the big payers for the next 6 years are Ireland and Italy.
Which makes me laugh a lot - an online friend of mine is a big lefty Irishman who was super happy that they're still part of the EU post-Brexit. (To be fair, travel is a big hobby of his, so the EU's relative borderlessness is a direct benefit). We'll see how that holds up. Posted by: Ian S. at July 27, 2020 02:26 PM (ZGrMX) 338

331 316 The thing is Scotland doesn't have a significant enough economy to survive as a nation on their own. Wool and Whiskey isn't going to keep the lights on and they should know it. I question whether the EU wants another net drain on Germany and France's resources.
1. The EU has already pretty much indicated that they won't accept an independent Scotland. 2. Assuming the new EU budget is approved, the big payers for the next 6 years are Ireland and Italy. *on a per capita basis Posted by: Laughing in Texas at July 27, 2020 02:21 PM (Zp/Sa) I think the SNP planned on North Sea oil and gas revenues.
