BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE

John MacArthur is the head pastor of the large and influential Grace Community Church in Southern California. On Friday, July 24th, he posted a statement on his blog announcing GCC's intention to resume meeting for worship despite California's imposition of tighter lockdown rules announced by chief petty tyrant Gavin Newsom. He gives theological and biblical reasons why this is permitted, including:

Notice that we are not making a constitutional argument, even though the First Amendment of the United States Constitution expressly affirms this principle in its opening words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The right we are appealing to was not created by the Constitution. It is one of those unalienable rights granted solely by God, who ordained human government and establishes both the extent and the limitations of the state's authority (Romans 13:1–7). Our argument therefore is purposely not grounded in the First Amendment; it is based on the same biblical principles that the Amendment itself is founded upon. The exercise of true religion is a divine duty given to men and women created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27; Acts 4:18–20; 5:29; cf. Matthew 22:16–22). In other words, freedom of worship is a command of God, not a privilege granted by the state.

I really like this. The state is not the be-all and end-all of human existence. There are rights (and responsibilities) that exist prior to the formation of any state. If you truly understand and believe this, there is no way you can ever be a socialist. Not consistently, anyway. Once you start yammering, like Bernie Sanders, about health care being a "human right" or housing being a "human right", you're just announcing that you have no idea what human rights are.

I'm not sure what they're going to do if Newsom (or the local constabulary) decide that they need to be taught a lesson. Presumably they've got legal help lined up and ready to go.

So what we have here is a protest movement. We already have one that's been going on for a couple of months, but this one is new.

But unlike the BLM/Antifa protests, here are some of the things the GCC elders and congregation are not doing:

a. Stomping around
b. Yelling
c. Throwing stuff
d. Breaking windows
e. Defacing public buildings with graffiti
f. Vandalizing and looting private businesses
f. Pulling down statues
g. Turning urban neighborhoods into filthy, crime-ridden shitholes.
h. Assaulting and even murdering police officers
i. Leaving behind giant piles of trash for somebody else to clean up.

Pastor MacArthur's blog post is uncompromising, yet respectful. So I would say that GCC has the moral high ground here. What they don't have, unfortunately, is any elected officials who have their back. Unlike BLM/Antifa, who have their BFFs Ted Wheeler, Jenny Durkan, Andrew Cuomo, and Gavin Newsom running interference for them. The GCC elders and their congregation are out there by themselves. May God protect them.

Another aspect of the GCC protest (can we call it that?) is that it has a definite demand that can be met, i.e. leave us alone and let us worship, as is our natural life. This is not true of the rioters and looters who simply want to riot and loot and throw stuff. I'm guessing most of them are rootless millennials, with no families or children and therefore no stake in the future, who really don't have anything better to do with their empty lives.

What it boils down to is that the Democrats have refused to accept the legitimacy of the 2016 presidential election and this is just them turning the knob up to 11. So their response, interestingly enough, is to set blue cities on fire.

By the way, has any elected Democrat office-holder of national prominence publicly condemned the rioting and looting? I haven't heard any.

But I digress:

After publishing the original statement, Pastor MacArthur added an explanation of why he came out with it now:

But we are now more than twenty weeks into the unrelieved restrictions. It is apparent that those original projections of death were wrong and the virus is nowhere near as dangerous as originally feared. Still, roughly forty percent of the year has passed with our church essentially unable to gather in a normal way...Major public events that were planned for 2021 are already being canceled, signaling that officials are preparing to keep restrictions in place into next year and beyond. That forces churches to choose between the clear command of our Lord and the government officials. Therefore, following the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, we gladly choose to obey Him.

Shorter GCC: Gavin Newsome is asshoe and we're no longer going to put up with him jerking us around.

Well, perhaps Pastor MacArthur's didn't say exactly that, but, I'd say my, shall we say, dynamic interpretation caught the spirit of it.

Anyway, read the whole thing. I think it's quite good. MacArthur is a well-known, respected pastor and I hope other churches will be inspired by his example.

32 Well, I know that's Roy, and the woman resembles Dale. I mainly know her from when she was older; I've *never* seen her in a swimsuit!

RR was one of my boyhood heroes before I discovered James Bond. In the late '40s to early '60s, Whitman Publishing produced a whole series of original young people's Western novels with him (among others), and I've taken to collecting and reading them now. Ghost of Mystery Rancho, about Roy's tracking of a murderous bandit who conceals his identity with a skull mask and skeleton costume, has many plot holes, but the narrative drive is great and the revelation of the villain's identity is a thunderbolt. The books are awfully good even for an adult; you never have the feeling you're being written down to.

33 Cookies so easy a Moron can make them:

Pre-heat oven to 375, and spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Mash up two bananas with one cup of quick oats with the back of a large metal spoon, until they are all gloopy and well-mashed. Now dump in a heaping tablespoon of mini-chocolate chips and stir. Drop them on the cookie sheet in 8 roughly cookie-shaped shapes.

Pop in oven for 15-20 minutes.

Will not keep more than a day but trust me, they won't last half that long. OK, an hour.

36 Regarding the so-called second wave of COVID:

OT:

Looking at Colorado COVID numbers as a representative example reveals a couple of things of note.

Daily case numbers of "positive PCR tests" have risen to a level nearly on par with the peak numbers in late April. (~500+ positive tests per day). The graph shows twin peaks of nearly equal height.

However-

Daily new hospitalizations for (or with) COVID show a single peak in April to early May with no corresponding second peak in June-July (very slight bump perhaps)

And

Daily deaths show no corresponding secondary rise (0-6 deaths per day since mid-June.

But

Number of tests reported daily was in the range of 3-4,000 statewide in early May, has now risen to over 16,000 per day as of July 24. The percent of tests that are positive has been hovering in the 3-5% range since late May.

This suggests one (or both) of two things.

1. We are now testing people who wouldn't have been tested back in Apr-May. Many or most without symptoms. Not tested for medical reasons. More workforce return-to-workplace type testing. If we had been testing those people in April the initial peak of cases would have been much higher than presented. So the testing strategy has shifted from a diagnostic test to more of a general population screening test. And it looks like a baseline prevalence of the virus in a not-very-sick population of ~5%. That smacks of endemic prevalence as opposed to epidemic spread.

OR

2. The virus has mutated into a much less deadly form and we are now screening for "the common cold.

And yet Polis constantly calls for "more testing capacity!"

tl:dr version- STOP TESTING PEOPLE WHO AREN'T SICK!!!

One RR novel called The Enchanted Canyon I read as a boy, but found it kind of dull. As an adult I read it about 8 years ago and was blown away by the handling of the central character, a Arizona rancher's young son, and the atmosphere of the Anasazi canyons where part of the story takes place.

This word, "peaceful," I do not think it means what you think it means.

I would exhort some of our more religiously minded folks, to take a stand for your faith. I would do it myself, but these days I don't have enough left. If you believe God gave you the mandate to gather, then gather. What's the worst that can happen? They'll arrest you?

In the long run, that serves a higher purpose too. If Gavin the Gave-in Nuisance arrests YOU, but won't arrest all the thugs in the street, you'll be doing God's work by showing the evil for what it is.

There are Christians in Christians in Iran who are assembling together who feel it's important enough to do that they will do so despite threat of imprisonment or death.
There are Christians in other Muslim countries who are willing to take the same risk.

We need a whole lot more of this kind of spine from the churches and temples, most of whom have shamefully capitulated.

If a Catholic bishop says no public services, parishes can't have public services, no matter how individual pastors may feel. Unfortunately there haven't been any bishops to tell the civil authorities to pound sand.

Well, then lean into the economic part of it.

We need people working, not just receiving money from the government.

If the Republicans in Congress are trying to make that happen, then it's a good thing.

They're not talking about getting rid of the benefit, but lowering it because it's simply too high. Going from 600 to something like 300 could be the incentive to get a lot of people off their butts and back to work. That would be good.

No. The best shot the Republicans have is to get the country back open. The economy, the schools, all of it as soon as possible.

It's been proven over and over again that the $600 check is causing a lot of workers to stay on unemployment rather than go back to work and make less.

The real numbers are starting to come out of the so called "hot spots" now and this is what is happening in FL.

https://tinyurl.com/y2o6m4sq

Florida has peaked, plateaued and will be heading down soon. By Labor Day, when people really start focusing Florida will be opening up again and so will the other hot spots.

Focus on opening the country, not paying people not to work. Getting back to normal is the key to victory.

Posted by: Muldoon at July 27, 2020 11:19 AM (Fc5rx)

One of my biggest gripes in all of this is that no one in charge is pointing out the difference between a positive test and actual sickness. I don't care if someone has a positive test, I care about whether or not they're actually sick.

CDC is now reporting data that replication-incompetent RNA (dead viral RNA) is able to be detected up to 12 weeks after the cessation of symptoms, so this could also be a factor in the increase in positive tests. IOW, this expanded testing could be picking up remnants of a previous infection in some people. It's to the point now that the CDC had modified their back to work recommendations and are specifically advising people NOT to get retested if you have already tested positive, just wait 10 days from when you first had symptoms and then you're good to go. Which I think is what they've been doing in Europe for quite some time.

238 Well, then lean into the economic part of it.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, running from a biplane in a cornfield at July 27, 2020 11:46 AM (LvTSG)

Yes, lean into the economic part of it - After the election.

How would you feed about your boss if he came in tomorrow and explained that your salary was just too high? That maybe a fat reduction would give you the incentive to work harder?

No matter how true, you might be a little upset at him.

We can keep the current benefits going until after the election and take that particular problem off the table.

I really don't think your thinking would work out.

These are people who could be more incentivized to actually go back to work before the election to help the economy.

They're not working at all right now. The only incentive they have is that it pays more to not work than to work. Most could go back but won't because they simply make more on their unemployment. So, get them back to work.

268 Herridge is a top-notch reporter, and her tweet is a bit cryptic. But "18 USC 1519 Destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in Federal investigations and bankruptcy"
states
"Whoever knowingly alters, destroys, mutilates, conceals, covers up, falsifies, or makes a false entry in any record, document, or tangible object with the intent to impede, obstruct, or influence the investigation or proper administration of any matter within the jurisdiction of any department or agency of the United States or any case filed under title 11, or in relation to or contemplation of any such matter or case, shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both."
Based on the open-source reporting, a whole lot of people could be charged with that.
Her other reference 18 U.S. Code 1001
a Except as otherwise provided in this section, whoever, in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully
1 falsifies, conceals, or covers up by any trick, scheme, or device a material fact;
2 makes any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation; or
3 makes or uses any false writing or document knowing the same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or entry;

shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years
And finally, 18 U.S. Code 1621. Perjury, " imprisoned not more than five years"
Catherine is being a bit cryptic, but it sounds like Strzok (and others) are being charged with some nasty accusations.

We either believe our policies work or we don't. I happen to believe they work. That being said, my guess is this is just a deal point for now. And that the current benefits will remain on the books for another 6 months. I'm not going to worry about it too much. But it is too high.

318 I do miss the kitschy 1950's/1960's Americana that I grew up with. It WAS a much simpler time.

Wasn't it, though?

As
a thought experiment, I've often wondered what modern-day America would
look like had we not been infested by domestic enemies and were left to
live our innocent lives in peace.

*long wistful sigh* I sure miss the old days...

Yes. This is the problem with the modern feminist. They want the privileges (protection, courtesy, etc.) but not the responsibilities (to act like a person in return). Yet, I don't blame them. They have been getting away with it for decades. No one ever told them "no." No one ever hit them back. That needs to change if the attitude is going to change. They need to be shut down, people need to be unpleasant and rude in return, and if they hit you then you need to hit them back, as unpleasant as hitting a woman is.

Until they are made to understand that the privileges do not apply unless the responsibilities do, there will be no change for the better. 460 Funny story and I'll probably get willowed:

Lib CEO comes in my office this morning.

Starts telling me about an incident at one of our inpatient units this weekend. Group gathered in parking lot, one pulls gun. Just happened to be a uniformed cop visiting a family member. Gun puller gets arrested, handcuffed...then takes off running. Getaway car pulls up but he can't open door to get in because handcuffs. Cop tazers him.

CEO must have shown up onsite shortly after the cop stuff. Another car pulls in, rolls window down about an inch. CEO informs them this is private property and they can't be here to shoot their rap video. Yes, that's what they were doing with gun and all that. Person tells CEO, "what do you mean this is private property? We can be here!" Cops were still present, so person left.

Now, that parking lot, overlooking Lake Erie with lovely manicured gardens for staff and patients/families has to be blocked off after 5PM every night.

Lib CEO didn't seem to like when his beloveds starting making trouble on the property. Imagine that.

Not a doctor myself, but this seems more likely, and frankly consistent with the progression of many other viral infections.
A really deadly virus does not usually spread, because it kills the host.
The most lethal strains then tend to mutate to become less toxic and more infectious.

So likely, a lot of the present strains of Covid 19 out there may likely be infections, but not as dangerous as what likely arrived here last Autumn- Winter.

=====

I may have mentioned before, but school district sent out memo this spring to us HS coaches that if a player of ours wants to kneel during national anthem we must allow it. I doubt it ever would happen in our rural community. But if it does, I think it would be time for me to hang up the fungo.

2. The virus has mutated into a much less deadly form and we are now screening for "the common cold.

And yet Polis constantly calls for "more testing capacity!"

CDC website has that a"positive" test an indicate person has a common cold.

LA positive test result shows you may have antibodies from an infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. However, there is a chance a positive result means that you have antibodies from an infection with a virus from the same family of viruses (called coronaviruses), such as the one that causes the common cold."

Look.

When a radicalized secular millenarian movement starts shutting down houses of worship for well integrated, law-abiding minority communities, we likely have a serious problem on our hands.

When it starts shutting them down for the dominant religion in the country then we definitely have a serious problem. Like, as in "a problem that should be freaking people the fuck out, right now."

480 468 I heard that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans had a severely retarded child (a daughter, I believe) and rather than stick her into an institution and abandon her, took care of her at home and were not ashamed to be seen with her in public.

Down's syndrome. She wrote the book Angel Unaware about her child.

Yes. Yes, they are. Serious. Finally.
