I went to my grandson's American Legion final home game. It was great fun. Normally they would be playing for another few weeks, but many teams have shut down because of the Yellow Peril.
They only had a few teams they could play and the Legion wouldn't consider them "official" but they didn't stop them from using the fields or equipment. They even gave them insurance. The boys had a great time playing this year and seemed grateful they got to play at all.

We took the kids to Legoland (and Bok Tower) a few years ago. It was funny to see everyone crowd under the awnings for 5-10 minutes every day at 1:30-2pm for the torrential rain storm that would vanish as quickly as it appeared.

We went during gay month. Rainbow flags everywhere around us, but Legoland, a place with all the colors to do that nonsense, had exactly zero. No rainbow sh*t, and no gay anything. It was so nice being in a place for kids where they weren't pushing that crap on them.
I was so impressed I even wrote a letter thanking them for leaving ALL sexuality out of their park.

The real problem is the time of concentration. Even if it stops raining right now, all the runoff from previous rains on the edge of the watershed still has to get to the dam. So the water surface elevation at the dam will continue to rise even after the rain stops. Given the size of the watershed, I'd say the water is going to rise for a good long time.

I'm not a structural engineer but I've watched youtube videos vaguely related to the topic. Material quality may be critical considering the sustained flow of massive amounts of water across concrete surfaces. Cavitation and other hydrodynamic effects on the structure can run away pretty quickly and lead to failure. And the chinese aren't well known for being sticklers about material quality.

Dams are meant to hold water and release it through the turbines to supply power.
Spillways are of short terms control and that means hours of use...not days / weeks.
The erosive capabilities of that much water being released at the rate of speed this is currently being measured. Holy cow, they better have poured some really stout concrete.
But like I mentioned last night, smarter people than me think that they have a real honest to god problem on their hands if the rainy season shapes up the way the meteorological models indicate.

Yeah, VW did weird and wonderful shit to try to avoid using a fifty-cent electric pump for the windshield washers. Of course GM did some weird shit there, too, vacuum-powered washer pumps, and the ones driven by a cam in the wiper motor. It is mind-boggling, the lengths that some manufacturers went to, to avoid using a simple-ass electric motor to do a job that electric motors are well suited for.

I had a 1969 beetle for a couple of years in college. Souped the little bugger up. 1970 was the "super beetle" that had a curved windshield and McPherson struts (bug trivia)
The thing that got to me was the "cricket" sound it made on the freeway. That high-pitched whine that'd make you start going deaf. I drove that thing from Oregon to CA frequently, on the mountainous roads with black ice and lumber trucks.
Had a friend with a 1970 that got picked up by a breeze from a passing truck and thrown onto a hillside. One thing you never had to worry about was a non-functioning heater. Sometimes I'd accidentally drop a cassette down on the floor and it would land (and melt) next to a heater duct.

I was just going to say the #1 cause of death in VW's was that. The way the carburetor was set up, it was over the freaking manifolds, and a nasty cheap fabric fuel line feeds it. I can't even count how many people I knew that drove those things and watched them die in a fire. When I replaced my carb with a 4 barrel, I also replaced the fuel line with braided steel. All WWII warbirds I've seen (B-17 in particular), the ground crews did that. IIRC, it was gas (maybe oil) gathering in the bottom cylinder(s).

Well, electrics could run faster at higher speeds because the generator puts out more juice. Usually indicates bad grounds in the system.
Vacuum wipers slowed to a halt when you you put your foot in it to climb a hill, and ran like Billy-be-damned when you coasted down hill with a closed throttle.

I've seen the one at Canyon Dam in TX - the dam across the Guadalupe River that forms Canyon Lake. (Haven't been out that way in quite some time; I used to go there a lot growing up.) IIRC the spillway was used twice and gouged out quite a bot of real estate. And the floodwaters uncovered dinosaur fossils.

I had a Super Beetle while living in Maine. The control wires and housing that opened and close the vents, they were mechanical, rusted out so ever winter I would have to seal them shut and every spring I would open them.
If I drove the thing more than an hour in the winter I would have to stop and get our and let my right foot cool down. It got so damn hot that it felt like it was about to burst into flame.

Look towards the east as you look at forecasts.
It's the headwaters, west of 3G that are the main watersheds for the Yangtze.
Yes additional rainfall in and around 3G es no bueno, but it's the areas upstream that will really screw the folks below the dam.
