Twitter Eyes Paid Subscription Model as Ad Revenue Plummets

Twitter Clingers?

It's wonderful: Sometime over the past three or four months, everyone -- including the dopey Karens who are always five years behind everyone else -- realized that Twitter is not "fun," it is a digital hellscape and petri dish for viral mental illness which the company has given over to vicious lunatics out for revenge against the world and, even worse, "journalists" to control.

Twitter (TWTR) is actively exploring additional ways to make money from its users, including by considering a subscription model, CEO Jack Dorsey said Thursday. The move comes as Twitter suffers a sharp decline in its core advertising business.

"You will likely see some tests this year" of various approaches, Dorsey told analysts on an investor call held to discuss the company's second quarter earnings results. Dorsey said he has "a really high bar for when we would ask consumers to pay for aspects of Twitter," but confirmed that the company is seeking to diversify its sources of revenue in what are "very, very early phases of exploring."

lol, @Jack wants money from me so that I can be censored by twitter and #Cancelled by antifa shut-ins.

Hey @Jack, suck my fat greasy hog, huh? I'll give you two nickels.

It will be amusing as Twitter sinks and sinks into obscurity -- not just because it will be enjoyable watching Twitter's legions of vindictive transexual attactavists lose their jobs, but as the NeverTrumpers, RINOs, Thumbs and Taters who have invested literally countless hours of their short lives they will never ever get back into building their "Twitter Clout" begin confronting their poor life choices and start dangling themselves from ceiling rafters.

"Twitter Clingers" courtesy of Muldoon.

Afterthought: Most of the country -- especially the dregs of urban (fake news) "knowledge workers" -- remains captive in their own homes with only the internet for diversion, and Twitter still can't sell ads?

Like, they'll break out the classification of blue checks into different layers, and people without a blue check will have to pay to see those with the blue checks.

89 It's just a platform (referring to functionality here, not the Section 230/censorship issue).

If Twitter didn't exist now, I suppose the same material would just be scattered across the web, as in pre-Twitter times - but at the moment it's the message board/link farm for all serious discussion of C19, for example.

The "sewer" and "insane asylum" aspects are surely there, but you've got to actively bring it up on your screen. If you simply stick to credible or interesting people and organizations, it's a great tool.

Without it, I imagine many of the better people would just post material on their own websites, and the comments section would be the interactive part.

I remember about four and a half years ago when Twitter announced a really weird cross-promo deal with the NFL.

I had worked for an IT firm that had serious, eventually fatal problems seating sufficient quantities of users, and immediately recognized this as a symptom of the same.

The fact that Twitter remains a going concern this long is surprising to me, and I had chalked it up to them being quietly subsidized by rounds of VC funding or something.

Maybe they're just shitty, and had enough clout because of celebrity users to keep clicking along.

The worst Twitter experience I've had has been limited to the brief, mindless and ineffectual pushback or attacks on serious people, in their "Replies", which is why I only check replies for certain people. Sweet spot is those below the radar, so they don't attract the incredibly dumb "educated" sorts with their usually stupid responses. Those people have real replies on the substance of issues and often interact that way.

Just substitute "website" for "Twitter timeline".

184 Facebook is facing one of the largest ad boycotts in its history-but you wouldn't know it from the stock.

More than 250 major consumer companies have joined the Stop Hate For Profit campaign, an effort to pressure Facebook (FB) and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to better police hate speech on its platform, supported by the NAACP, Anti-Defamation League, Common Sense Media, and other groups.

Starbucks, Microsoft, Adidas, Patagonia, Ford, and Yahoo Finance's parent company Verizon have all hit pause on their Facebook ad spending in order to send a message.

On June 26, the day Unilever joined the boycott, Facebook stock dropped 8%, hitting a low of $215. One month later, it's back up to $235. Shares hit a 52-week high of $250 just last week, even as the boycott continues. The stock is up 14% in 2020 amid the pandemic.

208 In an age of Trumpian authoritarianism, Twitter stands nearly alone, along with Google, Facebook and other tech and media companies, in bravely disseminating uncomfortable truths that Trump and his corrupt loyalists are constantly trying to suppress.

As an example, I believe the time has now come to use Twitter to reveal to the public that Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein were in fact working on behalf of Syrian intelligence.

And I am sure that all of my national security friends working in the bowels of the Deep State will agree that we simply cannot allow Bashar Assad to achieve a victory over the United States by making any of her evidence public.

Good luck trying to get money from the teenagers, trannies and assorted retards that make up the majority of Twatter's users. Gonna be even harder for the media to pretend that what trends among the pyschopaths on Twatter is relevant to the vast majority of Americans who don't use Twatter.

Much smaller, with way less staff at lower salaries. They'll cater to small number of paying customers who still value it as means of information dissemination. Mostly newsrooms and their state/party sources. This is one reason I never understood why that pokemon app didn't get more scrutiny when everybody was so enamored with it. The app accesses all of the info on your phone, camera, mic, video, location and contacts (everybody clicks "yes"). So, you think you're looking for pokemon. What you're doing is giving them your exact location, as well as what you're looking at. So you can find stupid animals.

So, they get to map out every damned building in the country, and figure out the floor plans. Hospitals, schools, tech firms, federal buildings, you name it. What happens when an Army private is sitting around bored on watch? He starts looking for pokemon. Doesn't matter if it's a secure location, but now they know the layout for the admin building at "X" base. And, how many feet/inches it is to the depot or cafeteria.

Scary shit.

And probably a plastic/wood/gold/silver/platinum level. It's possible the free service will still help the antifa types to organize, as they'll only be following each other and discussing meet-ups.

But the Jonahs and the Stelters? Are they suddenly going to become little fishes in a big pond? It's them, celebrities and politicians, and nobody else?

And if they do move to this model, then what happens as far as the platform v publisher argument? It becomes obvious they're a publisher, doesn't it? How could they argue that? This might actually be the best thing that could happen. And Dorsey can use it as an excuse to not publish calls to burn things or kill people.

North Carolina gave k-12 a third of a billion dollars in emergency funding this year.

After the schools had closed. After the kids weren't in any of the buildings any more. After the staff was sitting at home not using any resources.

Go ahead and square that circle.

Part of the problem with Hollywood is that they do spend too damned much on FX.

I remember the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds...the original was done on a shoestring, and had a better story and presentation. The remake had the Mustang just like four football fields, just stupid.

They would be better off giving a guy 7 mil and ask them to make the next Star Wars.

Disney is completely fucked in the head, they gave billions upon billions to Kathleen Kennedy and she turned out the worst films ever made, imo of course.

Now, they are begging people to come in for your normal procedures and are a bit shocked at the skepticism.

It's okay-ish. I don't regret watching it. But it's way different. No Stack-like narrator. Each episode is an hour and covers one case. Only a couple of them offer genuine mysteries, I think. The others may be "unsolved" is some technical sense but are obvious enough. One episode is UFO-related and could not be more boring. First episode is the strongest. So if you watch it and it's not your cuppa, abandon ship.

The Leftist do this and more and moreover they really mean it. They use it to coordinate domestic terror activity and as a freaking medium for speech and thought control and public pressure on opponents.

The double standard is unacceptable, and hopefully that's why they're having trouble. If the rule is "no death threats and no incitements to violence" then fine. But that isn't the rule. It's only a rule if you're on the wrong ideological plane.

499 If network effects of platforms produce natural monopolies, because ad revenue is driven by the number of users within the network and the number of connections among those users, so that piling up the most users at whatever cost was the whole game until all competitors were killed off, then Twitter will lose its natural monopoly once it charges for a premium service. Anyone can create a subscription service. The point of Twitter (and Google, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) is that they all gave the user value for no upfront or regular cost, just stealing their information, selling their information and shoving ads at them. It was how they could always argue under the consumer benefit model promoted by Bob Bork and Bill Baxter, that they were not monopolies because they delivered value for a zero price.
