Neocon Lesbian Bari Weiss Leaves the New York Times, Blaming Woke Millennials for Poisoning the Paper

Update: Former Democrat presidential candidate Andrew Yang says the New York Times is no longer fit for purpose.

yangonweiss

Lesbians are only permitted to have one type of politics.

Matter of fact -- everyone is only permitted to have one type of politics.

Bari Weiss, a writer and editor for the embattled New York Times Opinion section, is leaving the paper.

When reached by phone, Weiss did not want to offer any further comment beyond confirming that she was out. According to an internal source, she was removed from the staff directory sometime in the past week.

A controversial figure inside and outside the paper, Weiss leaves in the wake of what she recently described as a civil war at the Times between "(mostly young) wokes" and "(mostly 40+) liberals."

She's published this resignation letter.

It's a hell of a letter.

Dear A.G.,

It is with sadness that I write to tell you that I am resigning from The New York Times.

I joined the paper with gratitude and optimism three years ago. I was hired with the goal of bringing in voices that would not otherwise appear in your pages: first-time writers, centrists, conservatives and others who would not naturally think of The Times as their home. The reason for this effort was clear: The paper's failure to anticipate the outcome of the 2016 election meant that it didn't have a firm grasp of the country it covers. Dean Baquet and others have admitted as much on various occasions. The priority in Opinion was to help redress that critical shortcoming.

I was honored to be part of that effort, led by James Bennet. I am proud of my work as a writer and as an editor....

But the lessons that ought to have followed the election--lessons about the importance of understanding other Americans, the necessity of resisting tribalism, and the centrality of the free exchange of ideas to a democratic society--have not been learned. Instead, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn;t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.

Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative.

My own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I'm "writing about the Jews again." Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly "inclusive" one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are.

There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong.

I do not understand how you have allowed this kind of behavior to go on inside your company in full view of the paper's entire staff and the public. And I certainly can't square how you and other Times leaders have stood by while simultaneously praising me in private for my courage. Showing up for work as a centrist at an American newspaper should not require bravery.

Part of me wishes I could say that my experience was unique. But the truth is that intellectual curiosity--let alone risk-taking--is now a liability at The Times. Why edit something challenging to our readers, or write something bold only to go through the numbing process of making it ideologically kosher, when we can assure ourselves of job security (and clicks) by publishing our 4000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world? And so self-censorship has become the norm.

What rules that remain at The Times are applied with extreme selectivity. If a person's ideology is in keeping with the new orthodoxy, they and their work remain unscrutinized. Everyone else lives in fear of the digital thunderdome. Online venom is excused so long as it is directed at the proper targets.

Op-eds that would have easily been published just two years ago would now get an editor or a writer in serious trouble, if not fired. If a piece is perceived as likely to inspire backlash internally or on social media, the editor or writer avoids pitching it. If she feels strongly enough to suggest it, she is quickly steered to safer ground. And if, every now and then, she succeeds in getting a piece published that does not explicitly promote progressive causes, it happens only after every line is carefully massaged, negotiated and caveated.

It took the paper two days and two jobs to say that the Tom Cotton op-ed "fell short of our standards." We attached an editor's note on a travel story about Jaffa shortly after it was published because it "failed to touch on important aspects of Jaffa's makeup and its history." But there is still none appended to Cheryl Strayed's fawning interview with the writer Alice Walker, a proud anti-Semite who believes in lizard Illuminati.

The paper of record is, more and more, the record of those living in a distant galaxy, one whose concerns are profoundly removed from the lives of most people. This is a galaxy in which, to choose just a few recent examples, the Soviet space program is lauded for its "diversity"; the doxxing of teenagers in the name of justice is condoned; and the worst caste systems in human history includes the United States alongside Nazi Germany.

Even now, I am confident that most people at The Times do not hold these views. Yet they are cowed by those who do. Why? Perhaps because they believe the ultimate goal is righteous. Perhaps because they believe that they will be granted protection if they nod along as the coin of our realm--language--is degraded in service to an ever-shifting laundry list of right causes. Perhaps because there are millions of unemployed people in this country and they feel lucky to have a job in a contracting industry.

Or perhaps it is because they know that, nowadays, standing up for principle at the paper does not win plaudits. It puts a target on your back. Too wise to post on Slack, they write to me privately about the "new McCarthyism" that has taken root at the paper of record.

All this bodes ill, especially for independent-minded young writers and editors paying close attention to what they'll have to do to advance in their careers. Rule One: Speak your mind at your own peril. Rule Two: Never risk commissioning a story that goes against the narrative. Rule Three: Never believe an editor or publisher who urges you to go against the grain. Eventually, the publisher will cave to the mob, the editor will get fired or reassigned, and you'll be hung out to dry.

For these young writers and editors, there is one consolation. As places like The Times and other once-great journalistic institutions betray their standards and lose sight of their principles, Americans still hunger for news that is accurate, opinions that are vital, and debate that is sincere. I hear from these people every day. "An independent press is not a liberal ideal or a progressive ideal or a democratic ideal. It's an American ideal," you said a few years ago. I couldn't agree more. America is a great country that deserves a great newspaper.

...

[I've] always comforted myself with the notion that the best ideas win out. But ideas cannot win on their own. They need a voice. They need a hearing. Above all, they must be backed by people willing to live by them.

Sincerely,

Bari

What people like Bari have done over the years is try to use politics as their ultimate hierarchical decision point, and then write stories to fit the narrative.

Fail.

When people gain that type of power over you, where your vote, compliance, loyalty and voice are guaranteed- it's the beginning of tyranny. You are back to the middle ages and governments of royalty, not of democracy.

Some need to read de' Tocqueville's "Democracy in America". Especially the section about a tyranny of a majority.

Posted by: Emp Palpy at July 14, 2020 01:16 PM (lNxD2)

73 I think she might have missed a fundamental underlying point. The letter is quite something to read. But this section from the beginning, where she discusses her history with the Times, is interesting:
The reason for this effort was clear: The paper's failure to anticipate the outcome of the 2016 election meant that it didn't have a firm grasp of the country it covers. Dean Baquet and others have admitted as much on various occasions. The priority in Opinion was to help redress that critical shortcoming.

If this is how they see the problem, they will continue to fail. The problem isn't that they failed to "anticipate the outcome of the 2016 election." Virtually no one anticipated the outcome that we got. The problem wasn't that they predicted wrong, but their reaction to reality. That they failed to predict the final outcome doesn't matter. What does matter is that the outcome caused what amounts to a psychotic break across their entire institution and, indeed, across the entire industry.

They are so accustomed to being right, to getting their way, to being "great." More than that - which any spoiled child can experience and overcome - they view this position as the position of justice itself. They are treated as such because they are of superior intellect and morality. 2016 should not have happened to them.

But they do not look inward, and perhaps they cannot do so. They reframed the problem - after gassing up their rationalization engines and running them full-throttle - as one of inaccurate prediction while they continued racing in the same direction at ever high speeds with ever-reducing levels of care, caution or honesty.

The problem isn't the prediction failure, Ms. Weiss. It is a much deeper problem than that. And it is a problem that the institution and the industry refuses to address, or cannot do so without triggering their own fugue states.

84 Conservatives in general hire on merit. This along with AA allowed subversives to enter every organization and eventually ruin them because once one gets in and gets power, they begin only hiring other like-minded subversives.

I honestly believe that was the entire point of AA, and to anyone who opposed it on *those* grounds alone rather than freedom or the Constitution or whatever, I tip my cap.

Conservatives must from now on hire only people that explicitly have the known hallmarks of conservatism (starting with a highly limited social media footprint) and then pray for the best.

Ochs's idea is one of the best I've encountered. And I've always comforted myself with the notion that the best ideas win out. But ideas cannot win on their own. They need a voice. They need a hearing. Above all, they must be backed by people willing to live by them.

Legal term of art where you can argue that even though your employer didn't directly fire you, they allowed such unbearable treatment/working conditions that it basically forced or coerced you into resigning.

When you resign, you usually can't bring a claim of "wrongful termination" against your employer. But if you can show your resignation was really constructive termination, then your employer can have legal liability.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 14, 2020 01:15 PM (KZzsI)"

I had a very honest discussion about this with a person who is truly independent the other day. She opined that Twitter and social media are very good at making people believe they are the prevalent majority opinion, even though the number of users and other sources don't bear that out.

The problem is partially what Bari wrote. Papers and other media outlets now serve as force multipliers for social media. Whether it's laziness or on purpose, they repeat the social media narrative or opinion du jour.

So it's not that it actually IS the prevailing opinion, it it that their outlets and advocates make it SEEM that way.

The ultimate idea is to try and change people to adopt that narrative. To usurp it as your own because of the "crowd" or popular acceptance of it.

You see this all the time nowadays. Huge influencing operations across all forms of media to push a particular narrative or idea as THE MAJORITY point of view.

Ergo, you should adopt it.

Keep in mind some of the most well paid, top positions in these social media companies are psychologists and other people that deal with human behavior.

That's because influencing people into making certain decisions is their real capital. It's ultimately the way they make money.

If that had any chance, she would have dared to fire her instead of resign. Then again, if she hadn't left the NYT would have cancelled her more decisively.

Looking at the number of people being thrown over the side, there are some claiming that the Jewish leadership in the liberal movement is under threat. For instance, Eliot Engel losing his primary, which he still has not admitted. Meanwhile, people like Bill Kristol and Jonah Goldberg have never been more toxic or hated in the Republican Party.

The historic moment is ending. Which explains why the Beast thrashes wildly as it dies.

Hillary's loss in 2016 basically wiped out the Clintonistas still in the positions of power. Between that and Obama's failure to grow the party (1000 seats lost over his term) the result is a small core of deep blue Old Guard, and the young radicals eager to gain control of the party. A lot of the stuff going on right now, BLM, statues, etc., can be seen as part of the intraparty struggle for power. The radicals are eager to let out their collective ID, both as a form of therapy, and because they want to demonstrate that they have power that they can harness.

172 144 The fight on the left isn't really about ideology, it's about tactics and who has power.

It's the sort of thing that can easily lead to a party split after an embarrassing and unexpected loss on a national scale.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, running from a biplane in a cornfield at July 14, 2020 01:17 PM (LvTSG)

The activist left has effectively won for now, at least through the election.

The establishment is cowed, but they are not gone or entirely on board. They're also dishonest and ready to stab anyone in the back to maintain power within the party.

If they lose, both sides will blame the other for the loss. The establishment will blame the activists because of the further changes to the party platform that drove the party further left, and the activists will blame the establishment for Biden as the terrible voice of change.

This is a serious problem with all of the left these days. They are being led around by the most extreme vocal minority on the left on social media, thinking that represents America.

Only 22% of Americans have a Twitter account

10% of the users generate 80% of the content.

332 Looks like hospitals are making bank by over inflating COVID positives with insurance reimbursements. And isn't the govt. giving the hospitals $13,500 per death. I think they did this backwards. Should have charged the hospitals for positives and deaths. Bet we would see closer to honest numbers and would have nipped this whole fiasco in the bud months ago.

I want misery, insanity and death visited upon the Left. By their own hands, or otherwise.

The problem is that their self-esteem is astronomically high. Nothing,m it seems, will ever make them think ill of themselves, as they deserve. 388 Reading this it strikes me that the Left has control of literally everything.

From the media to social media to tech companies to schools to universities to "entertainment" industry to medical profession to sports leagues to businesses, to service companies like Amazon, etc.

There is absolutely no place in life right now that has not been infiltrated, taken over and now controlled by the Left.

The Left likes to talk about "safe spaces". Well, think about how there is literally no where in current society where a conservative is safe from punishment by the left. Whether that be public ridicule or doxxing or social media harrassment or censorship or losing one's job, etc.

What was that saying about communism's "long march through the institutions"? I think in 2020, we have found out that we are there. The march is over and they have taken over and control everything.

We used to be able to say that at least we had Fox News Channel, but even that is no longer the case, save for less than a handful of opinion news show people.

This is frightening stuff. This is not just a NYT problem. There is absolutely no where anywhere in society now where one can dare go against the communist-designated narrative and survive.

See any businesses or sports leagues or companies going against either the COVID-19 hysteria narrative or the Burn-Loot-Murder narrative? Nope. Everyone is in lock-step.

I can think of literally 2 people of influence who are fighting back against this stuff: President Trump and Tucker Carlson. And we're in real danger of having President Trump "cancelled" in less than 4 months.

Then what do we have left to fight off the Left?

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 14, 2020 01:54 PM (Do5/p)

389 The activist left has effectively won for now, at least through the election.

There will be fighting. Also popcorn.

My reply to them?

I get it. You are scared. Good for you. Stay home.

Those who give up liberty for the sake of security, deserve neither liberty nor security.

PLEASE say it loud for those in the back...
Read it... Then read it again...
If you want to stay home, stay home.
If you want to wear a mask, wear a mask.
If you want to avoid large crowds, avoid large crowds.
I am not required to descend into poverty for you.
I am not required to abstain from human contact for you.
I am not required to shop alone, without my kids, for you.
I refuse to participate in "quarantine life" until there's an unsafe, untested vaccine released in eighteen months.
I refuse to receive said vaccine to make others feel more safe.
I won't set myself--or my children--on fire to keep you warm.
If you're convinced the vaccine is safe and effective, you can get it yourself.

Some of you are allowing fear and policies devoid of scientifically accurate data to destroy America and ruin your life. I can't control your self-destructive behaviors, but we all have a say in America. We need to tell legislators that we demand options. We have a constitutional right to take risks. Life is full of bacteria and viruses--many of which spread before symptoms manifest and after they subside. We have a right to receive OR refuse vaccines.
The data was inaccurate at best; purposely overblown to justify government overreach at worst.

Stop allowing the local deep state government to destroy:
The Food Supply
Small Businesses
Medical Autonomy
Access to Healthcare
Religious Gatherings
Privacy Rights
Fellowship
When the "new normal" is filled with starvation, depression, suicide, child abuse, domestic violence, imprisonment, governmental spying, and pure DESPERATION, the virus is going to look preferable to the world you helped facilitate.

I read a cool time travel story about some scientists going back to the moment that dinos went extinct. There was another planet where the asteroid belt is now, and there was some ancient technology in satellites surrounding the Earth that made the surface gravity be 1/3 what it is now.

The scientists fucked up and destroyed the technology which instantly flattened all the big fat dinos into pancakes when the gravity returned after 300 million years to "Earth Normal".

Weird, funny story.

Probably a lot of the aluminum in the superstructure and above the waterline in the ship.

It might end up being a complete write-off. Tough to extinguish aluminum once it starts to burn.

That is actually what probably brought down the WTC towers on 9/11. The aluminum from the airliners started to burn, and was then hot enough to melt the steel and the steel fasteners that held the structure together.
There is a video about that on YouTube.

Wait, what's the case fatality rate then?

523 Hi Bari:

"As places like The Times and other once-great journalistic
institutions betray their standards and lose sight of their principles."

Principles? Where-in-hell have you been? The N Y T has been shilling for the left since October 1917; in 1963 James Reston blamed the JFK assassination on the far-right. Your ilk are the first to get it in the back of the head. The left always eats its own -- even Trotsky; and you had to be called a "Nazi" to figure this out?

527 I read a cool time travel story about some scientists going back to the moment that dinos went extinct.
