The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
As I mentioned last week, Trump has identified America's real enemy in the culture war, the anti-historical, fanatically totalitarian left:

In our schools, our newsrooms, even our corporate boardrooms, there is a new far-left fascism that demands absolute allegiance. If you do not speak its language, perform its rituals, recite its mantras, and follow its commandments, then you will be censored, banished, blacklisted, persecuted, and punished.

Make no mistake: this left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution...

To make this possible, they are determined to tear down every statue, symbol, and memory of our national heritage.

I love the fact that he's the first "conservative" president to call out the enemy by name. This is a left-wing cultural revolution, not some disagreements over policy. And the phrase "cultural revolution" of course brings to mind the one the Chinese cultural revolution of during the 60s, which the journalismists covering the speech would've known if they knew anything about history, which they don't. But they did realize that Trump was pointing the finger at them, which is why the called the speech 'dark' and 'divisive'. Which is a bit ironic coming from the ones who have all but declared themselves to be on the same side as the rioters, looters, and vandals.

But what's President Trump going to do about it? About a week later, he tweeted this:

When I first read this, I thought, what, Trump is going to take on academia? All right! This tweet is what I call a shot across the bow. If you want to get academia's attention, hit 'em right in the endowment.

I don't know what he has in mind. Maybe a law that says if you're a university with an endowment of 'X' billions of dollars and above, you're not eligible for any federal money? I don't know, I'm just guessing. Conservatives have known that academia has been a fetid swamp of leftist dogma for decades, but DJT is the first president to actually claim to be interested in fixing the problem.

And then there's this:

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in 2017, Sowell described President Donald Trump as “the first Republican who’s made any serious attempt to get the black vote by addressing problems that affect most blacks who are trying to do the right thing—such as education, which is such low-hanging fruit.”

We may be looking at a roadmap of what he intends to do after the he's re-elected in November. And I'd be content if he only got rid of the Department of Education.

What if I am a gun owner and am willing to defend to defend my property. If I were to post one of those "this house is a gun-free zone" signs outside, and then I were to get robbed and it ended in gunfire where I killed a person in self defense, am I guilty of something? Like creating an attractive nuisance or "luring" or somesuch?

I suspect I technically would be, but that is a damned hard problem because to prosecute the case, the government would have to take the position that such signage presents an appeal to criminals.

I have often wondered about that.

...

I read a lot of school safety design documents when designing a blast wall at the entry of the school I worked at in East Java.

The point they all made is that you can't stop attacks with hardening; all you can do is try to make them decide to attack some other poor slob.

So when you harden someplace, you don't want to completely disguise the hardening, because that's the actual deterrent--that they can see hardening and decide to go to a softer target.

I would encourage everyone never to do the opposite of hardening. You're literally attracting attention.

67 The TP USA poster touches on a profound point that no one seems to consider, and that is the relationship between capital and labor in industry. Everything needs both to survive. Some are inherently labor-intensive (software engineer, for example) and some are inherently capital-intensive (like railroads), but there is always a mix.

What happens when one input is comparatively cheap and the other is comparatively expensive and that this disconnect is synthetic? Businesses cost-optimize. And for a blue chip like McDonald's, they can borrow very cheaply. Capital is cheap - deliberately and artificially so, due to interest rate policy - and so businesses, especially those that can borrow cheaply, *already* have a huge capital preference. If you synthetically *also* raise wages, what the hell do these people think will happen? That suddenly there will be a labor preference? That automation can't be done?

Automation can be done, it just can't be done cheaply. It is more cost-effective to have a labor preference. With interest rates in the toilet, raising wages markedly will change the math on automation. Low interest rates have a similar effect as a high minimum wage. Doing both at the same time is a disaster scenario for labor.

This is Crystal Lake, named because the water is wonderfully clear, perfect for the ice company operations that owned most of the shoreline here on the deep side up until the 1920s.

Socialists such as AOC and Kshama Sawant are ALL about targeting billionaires and billion dollar businesses for taxation/funding their pet projects. See Sawant demanding Amazon pay for her $500 million low-income housing in Seattle project.

It's a push-pull, where he rejects federal funding Lefty projects and bailouts while pointing at others who could be targeted to "pay their fair share."

university with an endowment of 'X' billions of dollars and above,
you're not eligible for any federal money? I don't know, I'm just
guessing. Conservatives have known that academia has been a fetid swamp
of leftist dogma for decades, but DJT is the first president to actually
claim to be interested in fixing the problem.

No need to revoke their tax status. Just say no federal tax dollars to support institutions that don't allow free speech, including in the faculty. Use the left's own beancounting methods as the criterion. "You only have 2% conservatives on your faculty? No tax $ for you!!!"

It might. "Ring" doorbells might be a deterrent. I dunno. I will never have one. I love the idea of home automation and monitoring, but will never have a system that talks to the internet. Ever. I would love such a system, so long as it never left the perimeter of my property. It can be done, it's just expensive because you have to pay full freight.

But observation does a lot on its own. Street lights are the most cost-effective anticrime measure a city can take. And they're cheap. If they don't promptly repair street lights where you live, move. The end is near.

Reminds me of a house in my old neighborhood. Older, established neighborhood (lots of old trees, etc.) where at least half of the original modest ranch homes had been upgraded to flashy bigger homes. There was this brick ranch, really bland and unnoticeable on a corner. After passing it I don't know how many times I noticed that they had placed large, pointy rocks in front of all of the windows (3-5ft long, probably went underground several feet) and bushes partially hiding the rocks, and a concrete attached garage add-on with no windows. We called it the "Go Away" house, LOL. No idea what they were protecting, maybe just paranoid?

eh, not really. It was a nice win, but it was for a unique program that only Montana has. Now, IF other state legislatures enact programs like Montana's, they'll be harder to block in the future.

What the decision did say was that, as far as the State was concerned, it cannot distinguish schools with religious backing from any other private schools. But it left states free to discriminate against ALL private schools.

I heard that there was a remake of this in the works. I don't know how you could. It would be too Hollywood -- there aren't enough veteran Western actors anymore who could believably portray a collection of washed-up outlaws and look like they lived in the saddle. There aren't enough actors who would tolerate the dust and the heat. There aren't any Mexican locations and extras that still look like the days of the bandidos. The Wild Bunch is a time capsule. The remake will be "The Expendables 3."

You damn well BETTER take on the universities, because if you don't, all you're doing is smiting pawns where you find them. Whether they're rioting in the streets, or filling up HR departments at your company, who are then passing on qualified candidates so you can be a more diverse company...

To the extent that this is an existential crisis, you have to go where your enemies are breeding their foot soldiers. There, and their lines of communication. Otherwise, you will lose.

Trump is already taking on academia with the DoJ actively prosecuting professors, TAs, and students who have been funneling intellectual property to China.

He's also just put the squeeze on the ones who've announced their 2020 fall semester (if not the entire 2019-2020 school year) will be online only by announcing foreign students will be returned home/cannot re-enter the country for online classes.

The endowment comment might be a way to remind them that they could/might have to make do without lab grant money (if you're using federal grants for work that will be then be sold to China on the sly) and/or to accommodate for any tuition losses should these foreign students withdraw rather than pay their high tuition rate for online courses from their home country.

He's definitely trying to keep them off-balance. LOLGF.

Who will then donate eye-watering sums of money to the corrupt politicians who enable their despicable business practices to keep them in orifice.

++++++++++++++
Universities are an entirely fixable problem, and easily so. Just turn off the spigot. No more non-dischargeability of student loan debt. No more federal backstop of student loans. No more federal financial aid. No more research grants to universities.

Shut off the spigots. Student loan interest rates will spike to 25%. Likely would see discounted rates for people with productive majors and good GPAs, resetting to higher rates if you screw up.

This would cause a shift, a big one and very fast. This won't matter to the tier-1 cancers, but everyone else will be awash in red ink and bankrupt within four years. Antioch would become the norm: bankrupt and closed. Someone else can buy their physical plant and other assets for pennies on the dollar and reopen on better terms.

The universities are high on the hog and awash in funny money. Turn off the taps, and they implode.

Or the perps were hopped up on meth, which is quite possible. The body has a bunch of switches and timers to aim at. The central nervous system (brain, upper spinal cord) is a switch. The heart or lungs are timers. Drugs will often suppress shock, tending to keep a perp in the fight while the timer is running out.

++++++++++++
One party will die. A split depends on the outcome.

As you mention, the Dems are pushing out anyone who isn't a communist - thus the "Big Tent Conservatism" we have at the moment. If the Dems win, the Republicans will be destroyed. There will be a rump party, but it will be dead in essence. If the Dems lose - that is if the hodgepodge of non-communists can destroy the communists - then the Republican party will split.

The "Big Tent" is not a long-term strategy for success. But I'll take any ally in the war against the reds. If the reds go under, then we can split up and go back to a left/right dichotomy where both sides acknowledge universal underpinnings (what used to be "American Values") and then squabble over minutiae like we used to.

The Dems won't be the splitting party. They'll be the dead party if we win. Then the Republicans will split. If they win, then it's a small communist ruling class dictating terms in a slave state, and no other parties matter.

I saw someone on the Gub thread yesterday mentioned picking up CCI primers for an "Intruder Alert", had never heard of this. It's designed to use tripwire, and signal noise (presumably 209 primers are loud?) alerting someone of someone being where they shouldn't.

Have pondered this, as I live alone and the usual means of "ingress" as it is termed, is simply kicking in the door. Gotta sleep sometime. Home invasions will be very common. Well more common than they are already, which is pretty damn common.

That is an old, old idea. I saw a similar gadget in a DIY book from the 1920's: Take a rat trap, maybe mouse trap would work, note where the kill bar impinges on the wooden base, drill holes there, and insert .22 blank caps, the kind used in starting pistols. Tie string to trap trigger.

I'm curious how that Indianapolis case is going to play out.

The story, as it is written, contains some rather eyebrow raising details. The initial verbal interaction between the woman and the ones who eventually shot and killed her, resulted in a mexican standoff, where both sides drew guns.

Only later, as they were "passing under a bridge" did the shooters fire on her, and the boyfriend or whatever, immediately drew and fired on the killers. He was quoted saying something like "I don't know if I hit anybody or not."

I'm not saying anything about anybody here, only that it wouldn't shock me if there are no good guys involved.

The President has the plenary power to pardon in the Constitution (except Presidents cannot pardon in the case of impeachment). He can pardon for any reason or no reason at all. Hell, he can openly sell pardons as did Clinton and the only power the other branches have to question or stop him is to impeach him.

The proper response (and the one that the President will hopefully offer) is to ignore the judge... or tell her explicitly where she can stick her request for clarification.

----

Thanks AOP! Gives me some ideas. I'm not sure someone kicking in my door would wake me up. At least, not in a timely manner.
----
You have no rights to shoot someone, just because they broke into your house.

Well, reasonable people would disagree on that. The "law" might say otherwise. But then, the law is an ass.

Common Law used to distinguish between these things. Burglary, for example, was a specific crime of breaking and entering at night when people are presumably asleep, and at their most vulnerable. It had increased penalties compared with daytime robbery.

If someone breaks into my home, it should not be up to me personally, to divine their motivations or intentions, past injustices or their drug use, mental stability etc. It may well be the most prudent course of action is to unass the AO. But it should not be a requirement as a matter of law, like the bolshevik states require. "Duty to Flee". That's crazy. Again, might be a good idea - might not.

Anything bad that happens to someone in the course of their commission of a crime is on them, and we as a society need to be ever mindful of that. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

to publicly display a firearm and point it at another person. Without
firing.

If you are going to draw your weapon and point.... youre better off legally pulling the trigger.

Maybe the commutation order doesn't say anything about the post prison monitoring and only commuted the prison sentence.

456 compelling evidence that she was fearing for her safety.

Other than a yelling, aggressive, mob breaking through their gate, I can't imagine why she would feel afraid. By the way, her lawyer, pointed out that their house was in no way, on the path to the mayor's house. So that part of the media narrative against them has collapsed. Gee, you don't think the media would lie do you?

Again I think the judge is just asking for clarification on the scope of
the commutation. You would think it includes everything in the sentence
including the monitoring upon release from prison but that's what the
judge wants to know.

Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 13, 2020 12:19 PM (U9Qbt)

No she is not. Clearly, commuting his sentence includes ALL parts of his sentence. There is no monitoring if there is no sentence (just like the feds lose the ability to monitor if people serve their full sentence... no parole means no post prison monitoring).

462 Unless you are physically attacked.
Verbal threats of harm from an overwhelming mob are assault. They had reason to fear for their lives. If they had waited till the mob first struck them, it would have been too late. Same as waiting until a single assailant actually pulls the trigger, you screwed up and waited too long.

Posted by: Nick in Tallahassee at July 13, 2020 12:16 PM (svbBD)

Yeah, not seeing why a Judge would need clarity on a commuted sentence issued by her court regarding a named defendant and case...its not something the WH should feel obligated to provide - its like spelling something out because the court is pretending not to understand a constitutional executive branch prerogative on purpose to cause trouble.

467 What if I am a gun owner and am willing to defend to defend my property.

You're literally attracting attention.

. . . .

Ah! So the trick is to give the signs to all your non-gun owning neighbors!

Posted by: starboardhelm at July 13, 2020 12:52 PM (yy4fX)

468 Not quite. They would have had to be "inside" his house. Or physically
attacked them on his lawn. If he'd shot them on his front lawn without
being physically attacked, he would be in trouble. HUUUGE trouble.

Maybe, maybe not. Because they had a gated walled fence, an argument can be made that the crowd was already inside their residence. Besides a mob changes things over a single intruder, you might have to wait until a single intruder attacks you in your yard, a howling mob, not so much. If you wait until the mob attacks you physically, you probably waited to long to save yourself with a gun. A mob, even with bare hands, is a deadly threat to your life.
