I used to be so naive that I thought people who majored in criminal justice were obviously pro-police, pro law-and-order, pro heavy-sentencing.

Then a new neighbor moved in across the street from me a few years back and I learned he had been a criminal justice major who later went on to a career in criminal justice. Assuming he was on our side, I casually dropped some pro law-and-order opinions into a conversation.

Ooops.

Turns out he had devoted his entire career to "ending incarceration" and eliminating "the prison-industrial complex."

Yeah, turns out if you look at actual criminology, there are some themes that start to emerge.

Such as those involving age, sex, race, and socioeconomic trends of criminals. Criminal careers are fairly easy to trace, once you plug in the data.

So if you have an 18 year old who got caught with a bag of weed... sure, give him probation, let's see how this goes.

But if you have a 19 year old who gets caught with a bag of weed, and a gun in the glovebox, and has warrants for burglary, and a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon... he needs to be locked up. For years. Period.

Their biggest mistake was thinking that they could do it openly in this climate. You've got to do things undercover and be untraceable now. For example, the proper way to deal with that BLM mural would have been to have a pickup truck with a 30 gallon trash can in it, fill the trash can with black dye or paint or whatever you're using. At 2 am, black out your license plates with heavy tape (so no surveillance cams can ID you) and then drive slowly over it, pushing out the trash can (or cans) as you go over it. Then, take off. (and uncover your license plates a few blocks away) If you're quick and do recon to make sure the area is deserted at the time, you'd get away clean.

How many jobs were lost (temporary/permanently)? What investors will come in with money to build in these downtowns? What conventions will come back to these areas? Ok. I went to a Patriot League school in PA but being from Pittsburgh I had never seen lacrosse until I got to college. I live in Baltimore and the lax bro culture is everywhere. My son played until 11th grade when he switched to Rugby and loved it. I absolutely hate the lax culture here. A good friend who played at UVA and whose son is playing at a D-3 school next year said that if he had a son coming up through elementary school now there is no way in hell he would let him play lacrosse. It really sucks.

We played at Westtown school, Episcopal Academy and Haverford School. There were plenty of rich assholes in the Philadelphia area. The worst ever was the Canadian teams whose parent drank pregame and the players played like hockey goons. It was nice to see some of our boys light them up after a cheap shot.

How did they know immediately it would be lengthy? Maybe because there were several witnesses and also video, so there's a fair bit to reconstruct?

Reading that stuff on the Floyd arrest at Powerline, it's looking like getting criminal convictions of the other 3 cops (not Chauvin the neck kneeler) is not going to be easy. Floyd was repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" while he was standing up and resisting getting into the cop car. When he said he couldn't sit in the cop car because he's claustrophobic, one of the cops offered to get in the car and sit there with him, with the A/C on and the window rolled down. He still refused and struggled, and the reason they took him out of the cop car was that he was thrashing around and started bleeding. Floyd is the one who asked, repeatedly, to be put on the ground, which they eventually did. Floyd was a very large guy who was being non-cooperative, was agitated and clearly having drug intoxication issues (foaming at the mouth), and the cops were doing what they could to keep him under control. It does not appear that they were trying to hurt him, or that they were indifferent to his condition. And according to the one cop's filing, Floyd was still alive when the EMT's arrived and started treating him. We already know that the pathologists are contradicting each other about cause of death, so this case is going to be a bunch of expert witnesses testifying to contradictory conclusions -- and that alone is reasonable doubt.
