If they had bothered to even check their records, they'd know that I don't have it financed. I financed it at the dealer (part of their discount scheme) and paid it off within three months. They know this. They have the records. Yet they still send the boiler plate come-on.
Trying to talk people into eternal automotive debt prison is sleazy enough, but it's the laziness that bugs me. They could have tried a tack that would at least reveal that they had bothered to do even the small modicum of work required to not make me think that they take me for a fool.

He probably never saw my comment, but I tried.
The IP address comment ID system/hashes was controllable when VPNs were unheard of, but they are now quite common. I have one, but rarely have it turned on here.

1) Registration for commentors. Biggest downside I can see would just be it is a bar to entry. That is kind of the point, but you end up with more lurkers. And, to be fair, a lot on our side are skeptical of any kind of registration.
2) Empower trusted commentors to ban and delete posts. Biggest problem with this is when you give people power, some people go a bit wonky. Plus, everyone's idea of what is and what is not offensive might be different.
3) Shut down comments. Maybe go with a mirror site with no advertising in order to comment on? Biggest issue is that this is exactly what the trolls want. They want us to feel isolated, unable to communicate with each other and demoralized.

It's very likely they don't have a verification for paid off accounts, as I suspect it's a rare occurance.
Someone isn't pulling finance records, you are listed as a previous buyer and financer. and the list generates you as a lead every so often.
They normally offload the finance notes to a bank at some point, though 3 months is pretty quick, but it's possible they never knew you paid the note.
I get what you are saying though, its a different sales battlefield these days with all the data cutting for leads. Just more directed junk mailing.

He's right. But he doesn't get it. He understands that trust has been destroyed and that this is a seriously bad development, but he doesn't understand why. This is either because he is stupid or because he is dishonest. It could be both.
But he is correct that trust is shattered and no longer exists. Why should it? Every political and cultural institution has started lying with almost perfect consistency.
- Politicians claim to love America while executing a coup
- Politicians claim to be devout Catholics while championing abortion
- The press obfuscates only when they don't like
- The universities and schools teach that knowledge is ignorance, that slavery is freedom, that brute force is argument.
- Hollywood serves up pablum and calls it art.
- Industry outsources and offshores and thrusts communities into penury while saying it is for their own good.
- Banks tell you that you can afford things you can't and set you up for failure.

I would think the advertisers have a cursory knowledge of the tone and tenor of the blog, along with an idea of the demographic of the readership. Why would they drop the advertising on such a well known and established blog?

Have you thought about something like Patreon? I know it's "woke" like every tech company, but know a lot of people with niche type creative outlets that do really well, sort of like monthly donations, but many do things like Patreon contributors can pick topics to discuss, etc .
Many that were using advertising revenue before and their patreon account is now where they make the bulk of their living.
Instead of getting a penny for a "regular" in ad revenue, you can get like $5 a month.

I've actually considered programing a browser plugin that can "hack" such a feature at AoSHQ. I believe it'd be possible to do so by modifying the DOM to insert a link next to signature that'd use JavaScript to grab the comment above and insert into reply field.

If you forbid omnibus repassage (e.g., they must be brought up, debated and passed individually), then the legal code can only grow so much before everyone runs out of time. It is an excellent notion. I'll bet that Congress could handle the truly important renewals in 25% of their time, maybe a third. Prior to Operation Barbarossa there was a big debate in the Soviet Union as to whether Hitler and the NAZIs were what communist would look like in a developed country...because remember Marxism said that communism would come out of advanced countries not....Russia and China.
Obviously that debate ended in 1941.
But fascism comes from Mussolini who was a committed socialist. So the notion that fascism is somehow the polar opposite of communism never made any sense.
It would be like arguing that Lutheranism and Catholicism were opposites. And in the 1500s you'd probably find people trying to make it.

I would think the advertisers have a cursory knowledge of the tone and tenor of the blog, along with an idea of the demographic of the readership. Why would they drop the advertising on such a well known and established blog?
Sure, it must be a pain in the ass policing the comments, but Ace can add a few, level headed readers to help sort out the crazies.

Most of the advertisers probably don know that their ads appear on AOS. Ace deals with "adservers" which are basically AI robots that attempt to serve ads relevant to the content they read.
My suggestion to Ace? Shit-can the adservers, and sell ad space on the page directly to advertisers. They get hunk of the screen real estate to display their ad, and a link to their home page. Valu-Rite would be a good prospect. Black Rifle Coffee? Gun and ammo dealers? Meat vendors?
And "flat" ads on the home page will get by the ad-blockers, so guys like me (who hits tip jar occasionally) will see them. Win, win.

In theory this might be better, but practically speaking direct ad sales are a dying industry. I'm in this industry myself and can barely get anyone to sell ads directly because there are too many variables, especially when it's a smaller business that knows fuck all about creating properly sized ad creatives. It's just easier and preferred to advertise on an exchange.
What advertisers do to help prevent ads from showing on sites they don't want to see it on is employ filters and blacklists. This was happening for any mention of the virus as a lot of advertisers took the lazy way out rather than chance their ads being on sites peddling fake information about the virus (like you know, the new york times).

The more I think about this, the more I don't hate it. It would ensure 1) a small income stream for Ace, 2) that everyone has at least nominal skin in the game, and 3) as stated, a barrier to entry for all but the most dedicated trolls.
The way I imagine it working is that on payment, I get a random (but easy to remember, e.g. "correcthorsebatterystaple") password that has to be attached to each comment submitted. Anyone determined to be an abuser has his password invalidated and further comments get automatically bit-bucketed.

For the Sci-fi loving Morons here - you should check out the Expanse on Amazon. It's some of the best Sci-Fi I've seen in a while, the first season is confusing and a bit cold-blooded killing off characters- but that slows down and the story is really interesting. Some crazy lefty takes on interplanetary government and religion- but the story is so well written they kind of self-own when write the leftist BS kind of accurately.

CTH uses a system like that, where comments are approved, until proven trustworthy. But then, I got banhammered for disagreeing with a mod and providing actually statutory back-up. So nothing is perfect.
Perhaps a small donation to weed out the mobys and stormfronters, at least. Then at least Ace has some financial record of a commenter if they go off like MUMR or a gang of mobys trying to get advertisers to cancel.

Right and left are both authoritarian ideologies. Right wing however, is nationalist and believes in maintaining national culture and traditions. This is an overlap with conservative, but not the same thing.
The right in the US is not the same as the right elsewhere because freedom is a given in the US (was, anyway) and so right and left was only in the context of freedoms and not authoritarianism.
In fact, in the US the left has moved toward eliminating freedoms and so is more authoritarian making the right wing in the US the non-authoritarian exception to that whole system of classification.
It gets a little more complicated when you confuse *state* authority with church, and family authority. The Left wants the state to have more power but portrays the right as being authoritarian because they want to stick to traditional values and and traditional family authorities. Some on the right do call for laws to protect those rights, but that is minor (laws for prayer in school would be an example.) Abortion is not in this discussion although many on the left see this as right wing authoritarianism and control of a women's body. They think that way because they completely dismiss the baby as having rights.
One further complication is that the left often leans toward libertinism in matter of drug use and sex. This mostly has to do with their young and ignorant demographic and their low key goal of destroying traditional society. Here the right is calling for more state authority (to define a person's sex, to restrict drug use,...) as part of maintaining traditional society but even though this the the biggest tent in the marxist circus, it is really just a sideshow and does not reflect on their larger goals of total control of the public.

My suggestion, which is sort of an anti-suggestion, is to do what I did with zombietime:
Give up attempting to "monetize" blogging. I never ran ads on zombietime, ever, and never made a dime from it. Just shelled out an (admittedly tiny) amount of $ every month for the hosting. THEN, to "pay for" it all, and to "make a living," I literally did "get another job."
It actually was much less hassle and much less time-consuming and much more profitable than trying to wrestle with monetizing the internet.
So my suggestion is: Try to get a decent-paying part-time (or ultra-part-time) job that pays enough to get by, and/or that would approximately replace lost ad revenue. Then you can cease worrying about advertisers.
Yes, you'll have less time for blogging, but hopefully not catastrophically less.
Also: Feel free to dismiss this suggestion as absurd, if you think it's absurd.

I think that's the case for most of these folks. They have a sort of idealized vision in their heads, and base everything on that.

1) Fundraising - which can be done in a number of ways to as simple as making your paypal account more prominent and running "drives" to something more complex like Patreon.
2) Selling Merch - Get a graphic artist to make an AoS logo. Throw it on some shirts/etc and sell it through etsy, shopify, etc
3) Selling ads - this is the easiest but....it also make it easy for the left to cancel you.
For #2 a lot of non-technical people do this and you could get some AoS members to help you with it. But be very careful in vetting the merch/people helping. One "rayciss" design and suddenly your shop is cancelled.

I think that's a very realistic assessment. My estimation is that the only websites (just like News sites) that are making it financially these days are those with a big Financial Patron behind them. It's either that or market and sell, market and sell, constantly.
