Except for the Melania pics, which are from yesterday. And the flag dress. We will have a fishing thread later. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment. Remember, whichever moves you select for White, make sure that Black's responses are the best ones you can find. But there is one Black defense that holds out for one more move: 1... The problem is, Black can get counterplay by pushing his own pawn down the 'c' file. So White needs to eliminate this threat. 1. Kd3! Trying to get to c4. But Black easily counters. 1...Kb3 2. Kd4 Kb4 And now White has the position he wants. Black's King has been maneuvered far enough away from the c1 queening square that he will not be able to get back there in time to protect his queening pawn from capture. White may now push his passer. 3. h5 c5+ White has nothing to fear from this check. 4. Ke3 c4 5. h6 c3 6. h7 c2 7. Kd2! Aha! And now Black is schlonged. He has to drop his King all the way back to c2 in order to protect his pawn, but he just doesn't have enough time. 7...Kb3 8. h8=Q Kb2 9. Qc8 and wins White wins the pawn and the game. Hope to see you all next week! ___________ Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. And before you say, nobody wants to wear a tie or high heels on the weekend, I'm not suggesting that (though it would look cool). Once. Just once. But it was from the December 31st 2000 celebration at the Reflecting pool. We were close to the Washington Monument. which was scaffolded then, and festooned with fireworks. The Clinton party was late, but the necklines of Sophia Loren and Liz Taylor made up for that. An inside source told me that at the WH dinner party later, Bill has Sophia on one side and Liz on the other. Bill spent most of the night looking at Sophia's cleavage, which annoyed Liz to no end. Liz erupted after a bit, asking him to at least look at her a bit. Wish I knew more of that story. Posted by: NaCly Dog at July 04, 2020 05:43 PM (u82oZ) 63

Caipiria means "peasant" (roughly) in Portuguese, so "caipirinha" is the diminutive.
Fantastic drink, pure simplicity, and it's possible to get very sloshed, as they drink like lemonade on a hot day. Just sugar, lime juice, cachaca (a crude rum, sometimes a hint of sweetness), ice. First Lady Melania Trump arrived in South Dakota in style!
For the patriotic festivities Melania opted for an asymmetric sleeveless midi dress from Alexander McQueen that she teamed with a skinny black belt and patent red-soled pumps from Christian Louboutin. We love this printed dress for a glamorous summer party or a big night out! So if you're keen to invest in Melania's look, click over to snap it up for $3840. Or, from the Daily Mail: All eyes were on Melania Trump as she joined her husband at the early Fourth of July celebration at Mount Rushmore - but perhaps not for the reasons she hoped for. As President Trump took the stage in South Dakota to deliver a rallying speech to the 7,500 attendees for Independence Day, Twitter users fixated on the First Lady's eye-catching Alexander McQueen dress. Several people declared on Twitter that the $2,485 Alexander McQueen looked as if Trump scribbled on the fabric with marker. Saw many of the Mall fireworks extravaganzas in the 80s, into the early 90s. For a few I just biked down (lived about 15 minutes by bike from the Lincoln Memorial), walked the bike home. Think I actually spent much of the day near the Beach Boys stage one year - "bomb bomb Iran", that year.
The humidity and temps were typically absurd, of course. Utterly miserable. But best fireworks experience was the post-Gulf War parade in 1991. June, weather was pleasant, watched from a rooftop near the WH. First time I saw the "shaped" fireworks - yellow ribbons, purple hearts for this occasion. Other reasons that was a great day/night, altogether the best. Posted by: rhomboid at July 04, 2020 05:57 PM (El6T/) 115

No movie thread.
Here's a review of a pretty great movie I saw this week: "The Square" (2107) by Ruben Ostlund It's a rather funny comedy of manners concerning Our Betters in Swedish society, where all the "Elite" are members of the Radical Chic. The main character is the director of a Modern Art Museum, who experiences an unusual kind of robbery of his cell phone, wallet, and cuff links. As a result, he becomes a bit unhinged and wants to find a way to get all of his stuff back. He neglects his job. Most importantly, he neglects the opening of a new art piece called "The Square". Plus, his solution for getting his possessions back sets up even more problems for him and others in a widening series of interlocking reactions. There is some rather pointed satire of the Modern Art scene. And of all these well-off, self-satisfied people but essentially useless people with their useless jobs and their constantly stated but never acted upon "personal (marxist) morality", waltzing by the homeless every day. And you think you're in typical, same old boring, European, marxist social comedy territory, but you're not. Ostlund has something much more interesting on his mind. The story is told in a series of vignettes, which expose the hypocrisy and the distance between the director's words and beliefs and his actions. The comedy is sometimes surprising and often in the realm of "cringe comedy" as the main character slowly comes to the realization of what he should do. His solution, Ostlund's solution, the solution for every one of us living in "The Square" (symbolism, baby!) is a very American one. One, which would be recognized by generations of Americans before we were educated out of the realm of common sense by marxism. "The Square", as an art exhibit, is simply a lit square on the ground with the following sign: "The Square is a sanctuary of trust and caring. Within it we all share equal rights and obligations." Obviously, "The Square" is society. So, there are rights we should expect in society but there are also obligations on everyone, even the homeless. Ostlund clearly believes, as shown by the vignettes, that there must also be freedom of both action and freedom of speech. And also the freedom afforded by forgiveness both for yourself and others, If you do wrong, try to correct it. then move on. But, here's the thing. "The Square", which must've seemed very good in 2017, in 2020, at least for Americans, seems near great and prescient as hell. Practically, everything we're experiencing from the Democrats/Left/Our Betters can be seen in a gentle, comedic, allegorical form in this movie. Just watch the astonishing Fund Raising Dinner scene with Performance Art for entertainment, and tell me that doesn't represent a brilliant distillation of the Rise of Antifa/BLM and Our Betters reaction to it. I don't want to over sell "The Square" but in pretty much every way Ostlund frustrates all the marxist expectations of his marxist viewers and here's the important part- does it with finesse, wit, cleverness and entertains us at the same time. So, as a warning, this is a European movie which means the pace is slower, though I was never bored, and there are some subtitles even though large p-atches are spoken in English. This is a gentle though sharp comedy, so no fart jokes. If this sounds appealing to you, watch it. You won't regret it. It's streaming on amazon for $2.99. And a few places elsewhere. Check it out. There have been three mysterious explosions in Iran in the last ten days - at a missile production facility, at a nuclear research center. and at a medical clinic (killing at least 18 people). Interestingly, although the medical clinic explosion was described as a "gas explosion", the military took over the investigation, and limited media access to the site. One wonders if the medical clinic had a secondary use. In any case, the Iranians have been threatening Israel, and Israel is preparing for an Iranian response. Oh, and a power plant in southwest Iran just blew up. That makes four. Posted by: The ARC of History! at July 04, 2020 06:07 PM (I2/tG) 137

Harahorn Gin which has some interesting botanicals in it like blueberries and rhubarb. It has a nice fruity undercurrent along with the zing juniper in a dry gin. Makes a fabuloso martini. Bareksten Gin which has 20 different botanicals, including blueberry so now you know the Norweebles have a thing for blueberries. This one has a very clean, forest sort of character. Cicero I know someone in that marina who's pretty much the epitome of Coastal Clueless, I imagine he'd be scandalized by people going maskless.
Cute older cashier at the neighborhood grocery store (have always had a thing for her looks and manner) was quite receptive this morning when I couldn't resist making a snarky comment about the mask nonsense. I left her with - "if you're curious, when you're home search the internet for 'controlled trials/studies of mask use in reducing influenza-like illness' - you'll find a lot, and no basis for all of this you're seeing around you". Have you ever wanted a TV series, which promises lots of violent, fighting action, and instead delivers the random mindthoughts of the main character as though she were reading out of a particularly shallow and boringly repetitive teenage girl's diary with a big dose of anti-Catholicism and Christianity portrayed by someone who never read the Bible with all the SJW trimming and sprinkles you could want? Well, then buddy, your dream has come true! Netflix new series "Warrior Nun" is all that and more. Not recommended unless you're a particularly slow SJW pre-teen girl, and even then you'd be bored. I bailed after episode 3 and won't be back. Posted by: naturalfake at July 04, 2020 06:28 PM (ysqzb) 176

On Election Day, Biden will be as old as Ronald Reagan was when Reagan left office after two terms. Joe Biden is already two years older than Leonid Brezhnev was when Brezhnev died. Yeah, voting for Joe is like voting for Roosevelt in 1944 - except that Roosevelt got rid of his commie VP in 1944, suspecting that he didn't have long to live. With Biden, you'll get the commie VP. So the left says Trump is a hating racist who hates. Yet before he ran, he was on the cover of umpteen magazines, His wedding to Melania was featured in Vogue. He was on every late night RV show for 20 years. He had a top tv show for a decade with many tv, music and sports personalities on that show.

Agreed, mostly, but with one exception: ask any professing believer "What is the saving good news you're trusting to keep you out of Hell?" or "What must I do to be saved?" Their answer - from their own mouth - will tell you for sure when compared with 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Try it and see. "Wheat and tares, goats and sheep." Watching the pre-game festivities at Mt Rushmore, video from some various Democrats scolded Trump for allowing fireworks. The scolding was constant and extreme. FIRE! The area will burn! DEATH! etc. etc. So then, they interviewed the guy who is the owner of the fireworks company running the show. He has been doing this for 37 years, and is part of a 5th-generation family that has been in business all that time. He rattled off a few semi-technical points about why his show is so safe, that he has been working on this specific show for nearly a year, and why the type of fireworks he was using would not have any sparks, and debris would be minimal. And he said he is humbled to be able to deliver this show. I wanted to reach through my TV and give the guy a cold beer. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at July 04, 2020 07:23 PM (sy5kK) 338

I repost this, excerpt from letter by Gen. Eisenhower regarding Robert E. Lee
"From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities , including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained." The emphasis is mine. You see, the problem isn't Robert E. Lee, the problem is the character of those who do not begin to rise to his character and integrity. For the folks running around with their hair on fire--Kavanaugh is supervisor over the 7th Circuit which rejected the appeal of a district court denial of a temporary injunction regarding Pritzker's corona orders.
Kavanaugh can only give a temporary stay at best until he brings it to the attention of his Sup. Ct. associates. In interlocutory cases where a preliminary injunction is sought (which requires irreparable harm due to the governor's actions), these injunctions are rarely granted on an issue such as public health orders. If they do not want to grant cert which requires 4 justices, then it is rejected. Almost all interlocutory appeals such as this are dismissed as a matter or law (interlocutory means before a final judgment is rendered in lower courts) usually on ripeness grounds if you are talking justiciability of a particular case. Might be other reasons to criticize Kavanaugh this term but this is not one of those cases. That is all. Posted by: whig at July 04, 2020 08:21 PM (pv2s8) 510
