Beginner Problem - White To Play (547)

This one is a bit tricky for a beginner problem, but you must endeavor to persevere.

Goal: White can force mate in 3
Hint: The first move is not a check

What's the best play for White here?

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200627 - Problem 1.jpg
r1r3k1/pp6/4RqP1/3Q1p1n/1BpP4/8/P6P/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.Re7+ Kf8
2.Rc7+ Ke8
3.Qd7#

Taking the queen on the first move is tempting, but leads nowhere:

(1. Rxf6+ Kh8 (1... Kg7 2. Qf7+ Kh6 3. Bd2+ Nf4 4. Bxf4+ Kh5 5. g7+ Kg4 6. Rxf5 Rh8 7. Qg6+
Kf3 8. Bc1+ Ke4 9. Qe6+ Kd3 10. Qe3+ Kc2 11. Rf2+ Kb1 12. Qd3+ Ka1 13. Qc3+ Kb1
14. Qb2#) 2. Qf7 Ng7 3. Rxf5 Rc7 4. Qf8+ Rxf8 5. Rxf8#) 1... Kf8 (1... Kh8 2.
Rh7#)

Yes, it's a big mess, but I don't feel like reformatting it to make it easier to read. But the line goes nowhere, trust me.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200627 - Problem 2.jpg
r2Nqb1r/2Qbp1pp/kpn1p3/p2p4/2p2B2/2P5/PPP2PPP/R3KB1R w KQ - 0 1

1.Qb7+ Kb5
2.a4+ Kc5
3.Qxc6+! Bxc6
4.Nxe6#

Removing the defender with a queen sac on the third move is the key to ending the game quickly - and victoriously.

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200627 - Problem 3.jpg
1k6/4R3/1p6/p1p3p1/qn4Qp/1n3P2/1P6/1K6 w - - 0 1

If it we're Black's move, the obvious choice would be 1...Qa2# or even 1...Qa1#. But since it's White move, it's almost a stalemate position. This actually frees White for a daring attack

1.Qf4+ gxf4

The capture is forced, as the next move would've been 2.Qf8#. As an added bonus, White's 'f' pawn is now locked up, making stalemate easier.

2.Rb7+ Kc8

Taking the rook results in immediate stalemate. Black can try to wiggle out, but it will all be for naught:

3.Rc7+ Kd8
4.Rd7+ Ke8
5.Re7+ Kf8
6.Rf7+ Kg8

Getting the idea yet?

7.Rf8+ Kg7
8.Rf7+ Kg6
9.Rf6+ Kg5
10.Rf5+ Kxf5 stalemate

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

In America today the native costume seems to be "T-Shirt with snarky or commercial saying on it, shorts or baggy pants, flip-flop sandals or running shoes, baseball cap worn backwards."

There's an ancient Arthur C. Clarke story in which aliens visit the Earth after our nuclear destruction, and find a film with what they think is a typical Earth native. It turns out to be a Walt Disney film, and we're allowed to assume the figure is Donald Duck.

Today I think the representative image would be that of Bart Simpson.

Seconded.

And pretty amazing for her to remain that way under all the scrutiny and with all the demands of her royal position. If I remember correctly, she was a commoner before marrying into royalty?

From her Wiki:

Her husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, is expected to become king of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms, making Catherine a likely future queen consort.

Catherine grew up in the village of Chapel Row, part of Bucklebury near Newbury, in the English county of Berkshire. She studied art history in Scotland at the University of St Andrews, where she met William in 2001.

I am definitely jealous of Prince William. I am a sucker for brunettes and she is just my type. Had I only been born into royalty... Some guys have all the luck...

There was a dead bird, looked like a young hawk laying in the garden. How did we miss it the first time?? The dog was furiously barking at it. Poor little thing. 124 I had to take my geriatric Splotcy McFatCat to the veterinarian today. He started picking the fur off of his tummy today and when I placed the back of my hand on his tummy to see if he had a fever or hot spot, he made a pain response.

He's maybe 15 at the absolute youngest, possibly as old as 19. We rescued him from living in our crawlspace about five years ago. Poor dude was eating the squirrels and chipmunks I was shooting with my air rifle for grub when I first saw him. We began putting out dry food until he let one of us scritch his ears through a gap in the screen door.

Two weeks later we were able to grab him and bring him inside.

Hoping this isn't his end. But I'll be damned if I let him suffer in pain.

Stipulating their vile premise that all historical figures must be viewed through a current, extreme, insane lens is I fear a pretty good illustration of the skill and insight of many on the "right".

It's a nihilistic, racist, anti-American, anti-western mob.

They're not going to be taken aback or care one F about Yale changing its name. But if it happens, congrats, one more bit of American history wiped away by the rampaging mob, with the assist of some of their clueless "opponents".

It's like accepting the premise that C19, esp. for young people, is ANYTHING requiring any public policy at all, and then assailing the "protests" on that basis.

Genius.

344 There may be reasonably accurate data, some day, though as with almost everything important now, we can't assume the actual institutions lavishly funded and universally assumed to be legit would do it properly, or honestly (yes, it's that bad).

There definitely is a huge fundamental problem with the most raw data on fatalities, due to the coding and multiple cause issues. At worst, you can present analysis from that in multiple forms - similar to a worst/best case scenario presentation, depending on initial assumptions.

And using properly evaluated testing data + anti-body data + the ILI models and estimating protocols that have long been used for flu, I think workable #s will eventually emerge.

347 Ok, Infidel here's what I found out about Melania's dress. It's not the pic OM has. I found the dress but she's wearing a different belt.

First Lady Melania Trump chose a checkered look, a nod to NASCAR’s iconic checkered flags, while attending this year’s Daytona 500 alongside President Trump this weekend.

Melania Trump was girlishly black and white in a two-tone ensemble featuring a plunging v-neck flared skirt tea-length dress by Christian Dior with little white frilly bows checked across. Mrs. Trump cinched her waist with a white scalloped leather corset belt by Azzedine Alaïa.

The belt retails for $1,370 at Bergdorf Goodman. Loyal Fashion Notes readers will recall that Mrs. Trump wore the same belt in a beige leather shade when she visited the Great Wall of China in 2017.

Mrs. Trump paired the Dior dress and Alaïa belt with sporty Saint Laurent black sunglasses and stark white patent leather Christian Louboutin stilettoes — heels you could see from a mile away.

356 The Wiki page on David Brinkley has this:

Days before he announced his retirement from regular news coverage, Brinkley made a rare, on-air mistake during evening coverage of the 1996 United States presidential election at a moment when he thought he was on commercial break. One of his colleagues asked him what he thought of the prospects for Bill Clinton's re-election. He called Clinton "a bore" and added, "The next four years will be filled with pretty words and pretty music and a lot of goddamn nonsense!" One of his team pointed out that they were still on the air. Brinkley said, "Really? Well, I'm leaving anyway!"

No Karens said anything to me. And one nice thing about the masks, aside from the fact it keeps their ugly mugs out of my sight, is that I can't tell their facial expressions. Eyes actually have very little expression; we read expressions from the entire face, really. So if they are making faces at my unmasked phiz, it doesn't register with me.

The park today was full of people, parking lots full. Only people i saw wearing masks was this one ridiculous family. They were in the middle of an open field on a blanket. Mom, Dad and two young kids, maybe 8 and 10 years old. Completely masked up even though there was a soul anywhere near them. Do they think it's floating in the air? Imagine making your kids run around with a mask on outside where there isnt anyone around.
And, I thought the woman in the green dress looked like a painting.

427 People used to wear onions on their belts to ward off disease. Masks work in a similar way. In a few years some people will still be wearing masks everywhere, pulled down below the nose, in a vestigal gesture to a long forgotten flu bug.

Posted by: f'd at June 27, 2020 07:54 PM (A3ioB)

428 I dunno know, runner. It's so ridiculous. I have one mask. It is woven cloth. It has never been washed. I carry it in the car just in case. Maybe I'll try keeping it on my chin and see if anybody says anything. I don;t think the store personnel care. They can;t stand the masks.

Posted by: runner at June 27, 2020 07:56 PM (zr5Kq)

433 olddog, good question, but recall that a significant % of those deaths were just advanced in time - many of them would have occurred from other causes during this tax year, due to the age/condition of those dying.

A few weeks back I saw an actuarial approach to the NY/NJ thing that made it pretty clear. The demo of fatalities there is very skewed such that total expected deaths through December 31 may not be much affected.

The city declaration about removing Columbus from South Philly was so perfectly an echo of Soviet or other totalitarian regimes, it was astonishing. It was being removed for "public safety".

Of course part of being ignorant and historically illiterate as most Americans and all "leftists" are is that they don't even get it when such things are pointed out to them. These people are literally re-enacting some of the darkest elements in recent human history - in which the US was usually the force standing in opposition - right here in the US.

I smell some lawsuits brewing.

It can now pretty well be proven that she voluntarily allowed the rioters to burn homes and businesses, assault taxpayers, and cause permanent harm to the citizens she has an obligation to protect.

And encouraged the rioters to do all of these things with her words and actions.

When as has now been demonstrated, she could have simply taken action and shut them down immediately.

Nice job, a-hole.

I'm guessing tonight's Greg Gutfeld show, starting at 7pm Pacific time, is going to be another gem.

Gutfeld's Berkeley-influenced, modern reality viewpoint and his disgust for liars and propaganda generates some real content that is also humorous.

No wonder why Gutfeld's CABLE show draws more viewers than any of the Big 3 Late night talking heads on broadcast TV.

Gutfeld wittingly challenges thought instead of dictating thought, like the Late night 3.

And like how America is supposed to be.

Perhaps this is why he is succeeding?

Hmmm.

OK, I can see the parallel. Yes, it has merit. Such different times, however. Back then, both political parties were pro-American. Now, only one half of one party believes in America. Not the Dems, not the #Nevers/GOPe. They have mostly moved on from the last 240 years of history. They have both sold out America, and just want to get paid.

Except find anyone under 50 who knows who Jack Parr was. That's the challenge.
