Frasier was probably the pinnacle of the sitcom. Yes it was a bit formulaic, but that works if you only watch it once a week, with a long break between each season. You get enough time that the jokes start to fade from memory and are thus funny again in their next iteration.

3. no standard stadium/outfield layout. You can have a clean outfield or one where the fucking ball gets lost in a nook/corner and gives you an infield homer.

I became friends with a social worker several years ago at church. Nice woman with a fairly cynical view of many of the people that she was trying to help. She got married not long after I met her and moved away, so I don't know what she's doing these days.

Funny you should mention this. A lot of us priced out of the Bay Area ended up in the Greater Sacramento area, where the state gov'ment, like the Borg, will absorb you anyway. I did not dream of becoming a bureaucratic flunkie, but I did the cost/benefit analysis. Of course, there is the soul-crushing need to keep one's mouth shut about one's politics on the day job. Surprisingly, there are more "moles" in the Kalifornia Bureaukratik than you would think. We are like the Christians of 3rd Century Rome hiding in the catacombs.

California's a big state. I visit my daughter in Santa Cruz at least once a year and get together with a number of conservatives including her Korean next door neighbor. All the other field positions go up to bat. Why not the pitcher? If you are going to have a designated hitter for the pitcher, why not one for the catcher? Or the shortstop? DH is silly. If pitchers can't bat well, so be it. The other team is faced with the same problem.

That brought back some memories for me.
Right before BBoy^2 was born, the Daughter of Satan worked in the nursery in the hospital in Louisville (Baptist East). Some of the new parents weren't always able to get to the hospital for whatever reason. So I'd go up there, sit in a rocking chair and feed the newborns.
That was a blast to do. No diaper changes tho', which was real nice. Meconium is super icky.

I loved that show, it had the highest quality writing of any comedy of any sitcom in at least 30 years, with only Seinfeld as a rival. (Different styles, Seinfeld is absurdist, Frasier is intellectual humor)
And the episodes with his agent Bebe were the best, by far.

It was real, BUT the trick was that photo was taken with a telephoto lens and nothing near it to give you a size comparison. You can also see it in the picture from 2019 that CTH published.
The picture from Noosecar looks like it was this Great Big Noose - in fact, it was about 2 inches across. Because it was just a handpull. So why would someone tie a noose for a handpull? Because it's a good knot, it works, and before the last couple days there wasn't a single white person in this country who knew that shape would make a Grown Man break down in tears while simultaneously wetting his pants.

Every program and its brother creates wads of temporary files and does not delete them. With Linux, you've got a cron job that cleans up temp files every so often.

The fact is that since 1965, we have essentially opened the floodgates. Prior to that, from 1921 to 1965, immigration was quite restrictive, with a net deportation in the 1930s (not surprising). Prior to that, another floodtide from about 1880 to 1920. Prior to that, the Civil War and Reconstruction shut down most immigration.
We have had alternating cycles of open and closed floodgates. Time to close them again. And I say this even though in Cali "The women who like men don't speak English well, and the women who speak English well, don't like men...."

Butler was gay, Hibbert who played Gil Chesterton was gay and so is David Hyde Pierce of course. I think Grammar mentioned that there were several gay writers for the show as well. I haven't seen anything concrete about Mahoney. Sure since he was a bachelor and intensely private, lots of places on the net say hew was gay. But there is nothing in wikipedia that says this is so and I have seen nothing where he says he is gay. In fact, Wikipedia mentions an article where he talks about having several relationships with women but they never worked out long term so he didn't marry.
To be clear, I don't care whether he or anyone else is gay, straight, or whatever. I am just saying I have seen nothing online that proves he was gay or where he said he was or where a close friend says he was. It might be out there but I have not seen it. You do get sites where people claim it, but that doesn't make it so.
I think the funny thing is he played the All American guy versus the Brits and sophisticates around him. But Mahoney was born and raised in England.

That's what made the Nats win so special, they beat the cheaters. Even though they were stealing signs they still couldn't beat Strasburg or Scherzer. This is what I miss most in modern shows, why I can't watch them. I love it when a show allows writers to create a set of really great Characters; after that the stories are easy, you introduce something and your characters react and play off each other. Barney Miller, Night Court, all of the really great comedies used this model. Hard to think of any today.

I will confess that as a Generation Xer, were were not as well schooled as were our Silent Generation or early Boom Generation parents. "New Math", "Open Education" and all that crap.
And all through the 1980s, there were reports like "A Nation At Risk", which made me think Generation Y / Millennial and Z behind me would be better educated. But they are not.

Bebe and Chesterton were great. They should have had Gil on more. Some people for some reason didn't care for Bebe. I thought her episodes were some of the best.
I don't watch modern sitcoms if there even are any of those these days. Give me Wings, Frasier, King of Queens, Just Shoot Me, and News Radio any day. I have seen them all many times. I take that back, I do like Last Man Standing.

Tin Cup was surprisingly good imo. I agree with your list but I have never seen Stranahans under $30. Too bad I like the single malt scotches too much as they are more in the $50 and up range. It is time to get back into the cheaper stuff as you can certainly get good bourbon for less.

What is happening is now that they are starting mass testing, they are picking up a whole bunch of asymptomatic cases.
They found some cases at a fish processor on the Oregon coast, tested everyone, and found a bunch more cases. 95% asymptomatic.
There has been a huge drop-off in the percentage of positive cases being hospitalized.

I spoke to my sister in Texas yesterday. She mentioned that if you test positive, you stay home from work and get tested again a week later and repeat until you test negative. This means that one case of Chinese Death Cooties can easily produce 2 or 3 positive tests. As per usual, there aren't any straightforward numbers to measure this stuff, it's all skewed and trash statistics.

Wastewater analysis in Italy indicates presence in mid-December. Every new study emerging pushes back date of introduction and especially prevalence (number of exposed and infected) - the latter sometimes by large, large margins.

However it is very troubling that CDC and many others violated their own settled doctrine on such things by going to radical mitigation measures - and especially persisting with them - for a "prevalent" virus (well above 1% of populace infected/exposed).
It's a meta thing. If everyone from the WH to the governor of TX *still* are not acting and/or talking based on science and logic and the known facts, the de facto vandalism in places like MI and WA and IL is hardly surprising.

My understanding is that the decision by the Western Allies not to go to Berlin was purely a political decision based off of the plans already formulated by the political leadership of the Big Three regarding the division of spheres of influence in post-War Europe.
Or in other words, it wasn't really connected to where the front lines were located.

Berlin was not really a military objective for Eisenhower in the last phase of the war. A memo from Marshall in late March confirmed Ike's analysis that the primary objective was destroying Germany's war-making capability ASAP, and that meant driving south of Berlin, towards Dresden.
There was misunderstanding and a bit of ambiguity in the expectations of US field commanders, who assumed Berlin was a prime objective. This was evident when shortly after elements of the 2nd Armored had established small bridgeheads across the Elbe, they were told to stand fast for the moment. But the plan hadn't changed, it just hadn't been translated all the way into specifics for the end-game, and the advance had been very rapid and ahead of schedule.
Churchill and Montgomery wanted Berlin for other reasons - and apparently thought they wouldn't have to subsequently give up territory they'd bought with their soldiers' blood (Berlin was well into the agreed Soviet zone), or "trade" that territory for something else. Top US commanders were quite averse to buying territory, temporarily, with American lives, when the military center of gravity was further south. We also were very concerned to block the Red Army from advancing along the Baltic coast and possibly taking Denmark - Monty's main role was to get to Lubeck and block off the Danish peninsula.
Also - there was concern about a "southern redoubt" to which German forces and leadership might retreat, to continue the fight. The intel on this was mixed, mostly negative, but a prudent approach was to block southward movement, and this also was served by a thrust more toward central Germany than Berlin.
And on top of all this, Ike and Marshall were under tremendous pressure to wrap up the kinetic phase and start moving bodies to the Pacific, quickly. The "manpower crisis" of March 1945 and the whole pattern of stress the Japan invasion schedule placed on almost everything done in Europe towards the end seems to be generally unknown to most people today.

My late wife grew up in Annandale, VA and loved her blue crabs, until she finished off some Dungeness. Mind changed.
There were also times when eating Dungeness and the trimmings was a religious experience, but in reality, it was a Knights of Columbus fundraiser, with unlimited microbrew and wine.
Well, come to think of it, those crab dinner fundraisers were religious experiences to at least a few of us.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard shared a passionate message about being Black in America after he said he was kicked out of a South Carolina restaurant.
Leonard posted the video to his Facebook page Thursday, saying he was with three other Black men and a mixed race woman at a Chipotle in Florence, South Carolina when a manager approached them at the end of their meal and asked if there was a problem. Leonard said the manager told the group a White male said the group had been verbally abusing him.
"It was basically a lie," Leonard said.
Leonard's group was kicked out of the restaurant.
"We know that if that manager would have called the cops right then and there, we know what would have went down," he said. "And it's wrong in America.
"That's what being Black in America is right now. Us not doing anything wrong, going out to eat with your family, just trying to spend quality time. You can't even enjoy eating anymore," Leonard said.

I think it is a West Coast East Coast thing. The better tasting part would be where the controversy lies. I have only had the frozen dungeness and they were good. I believe people say the meat is sweeter but less flavorful. . Blue Crabs are a pain in the ass, a lot of work for how much meat you get. OTOH, that is half the fun and when you add beer, it is a good thing.

Six hours before, it was swimming at about 75 feet depth in Puget Sound. Grab one by the top of the shell as it tries to get away, knife it, crack off the shell, break in two, swoosh the halves in the bay until the guts are gone.
Toss in the cooler full of fresh ice. Next crab.
Six minutes in boiling water, no more. Salt water in a big pot is better than fresh water, if possible. Eat hot or ice down for later, and serve it cold.
The sweetest meat anywhere. I've only been catching and eating Dungeness for over a half century.
Yes to drawn, warm butter. And lemon slices. Not a cocktail sauce guy myself, but to each his own.
Piler or picker. It's more than a choice, it is a philosophy. I've been both, but then again, I'm an old fart.
Luckily, the world is still big enough for both.

Grab the crab pots and the cooler.
Go to the grocery store and buy Turkey legs (yep, and any store around the marina will sell them).
Also buy beer and ice, maybe a snack.
Leave the dock with all items.
First, open a beer.
When you get to the crab grounds, put the turkey leg into the bait box and drop the pots. The float is properly marked, so no need to do so.
Putt off the crab grounds to any area. Turn off the motor. Continue to drink more beer.
In a few hours, pull the pots, keep all males over 6 and 1/2 inches on the shell.
Check turkey legs and refill as necessary, and drop the pot back in the water. Before starting the motor, open another beer.
Putt off to a new spot, and open more beer. Wait. Talk about sports, politics, women (unless the wives are also on board)
Repeat until all limits have been reached for the day and bag.
Now red, you've gotta admit, that's pretty easy.

On Deadliest Catch, they soak the pots for twelve hours at minimum, and usually for 24 hours or more.
Side note. I worked with a USCG 100 licensed 100 ton Captain in the sailing school industry here on the Texas Gulf Coast.
She'd earned her tonnage time as a cook aboard the Bearing Sea Crab Fleet.
Everything you see on the TV show is mostly an understatement, and edited for decency.
They could not show on TV how bad it really gets out there. Both the seas, and the mayhem aboard ship.
She reports that the cameras tend to have a calming effect on behavior with the crews.

It's gotten a lot safer in recent years, since the state switched from a "derby" system (season opens, then closes as soon as the year's limit is taken) to a quota system, where the boat is assigned an allowed quota at the beginning of the season, and can catch them any time they want.
The derby system tempted them to go out in bad weather, lest the limit be reached before they were even on the grounds.
Note "safer", not "safe".
Me, I was never tempted, even back in the 80's when a crew member could pull in $50-100k for a couple of weeks work.
Every crab fisherman I've known in Alaska has been crazy as a shit house rat. The guys on that show are the relatively normal ones.

We don't have access to detailed statistics, because it would show us the level of scam it is. But I would guess that half of the deaths have either an underlying problem, or the person was flat-out close to checking out anyway.

I'm a broken record on this, but it's shameful how basic investing isn't taught in high school. Seniors might get five minutes the last week of school or the like, but there should be a week or more spent on it, and practical examples with sped-up time.
It's trivially easy to become a millionaire just by putting $150 or so away each month (to say nothing of buying a used car for $15K and investing the other $20K in your twenties), but parents don't know how and schools don't teach it.
I'm guessing it would severely cut into the take out a loan and go to college scam.

Or it could be the blindingly obvious hypocrisy of "you're killing Grandma unless you're protesting for Marxism". They tried to fix that by saying later that you should wear a mask while burning down black-owned businesses, but that made it even more obvious.

point is, you can go into them with money saved up, but you won't come out with any. I always think of the dumbfounded look on a friend of mine's face when a judge didn't just give his ex the house, but half of the pension he'd earned, for life.
I've always saved as well, I don't mean to denigrate that. But being in good shape at retirement age also requires a life of personal stability, physical health, and good luck.

Yep. The older I get the more I realize how important and arbitrary that last one is. Like the story the moron told here about the low-level laundromat worker becoming friends with an old guy he was sitting with at some laundromat convention, and the old guy ended up being the owner of a nationwide chain that he eventually sold to the man.
Or the model being discovered at a restaurant, or a band that plays a bar one night when some recording studio fat cat happens to stop in for a drink.
It's amazing how much that sort of stuff matters for anything beyond comfortable but still middle class living, and it's pretty much completely out of our control.
