I find Hendrick Terbrugghen interesting partly for his own talent and partly because he makes me see a precursor to Rembrandt. Terbrugghen's ability to give each figure it's own face and posture and his effective use of light, especially candle light, is remarkable. Even the ordinary scenes like this one are made notable by the techniques of individuality and light.

What's that in the background on the right?
I think it's a candle lamp. He's slid the base halfway up to remove the candle to light the pipe. He'll put it back in, slide the base down, and replace the cover which is on the table next to it. Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 26, 2020 09:58 AM (gd9RK) 113

The cause/effect of messing up one's childhood results in so many of the social ills we see today... including adults who won't grow up.
Posted by: BurtTC at June 26, 2020 09:50 AM (hku12) I think that's a big part of it, but I think we need to look at both sides of the ledger here. I think that the kindergarten forever mentality is so pervasive because our society has stopped demanding that people grow up and act responsibly. There's no longer any clear rite of passage to act as a separator between childhood and adulthood. It's a concept that emerges spontaneously in cultures across the world. I think it's something we need. Posted by: Cato, Collectivism Delenda Est at June 26, 2020 09:58 AM (J+mig) 115

I used to have a large plastic 5 gallon office water carboy that we fitted with a cap for fermenting wine to let the CO2 escape.
We bought a cheap hookah at a flea market, removed the bowl (which held about a quarter of an ounce of marijuana) and attached it to the fermenting cap. We then drilled holes in the side of the carboy and insert fitting to which we attached lengths of rubber gas line which I had leftover from a car repair project. We would fill the carboy about half way with water and then everybody would inhale until the rest of the carboy was full of pot smoke. At that point we would pop the top off, somebody would get down over the top of the carboy and we would blow a shotgun hit out of the top. The recipient would often times pass out from inhaling so much pot smoke and from lack of oxygen. In this way, we were able to get really f*cked up from $30 a quarter ounce, Mexican brick weed. Those were simpler times. Back before America lost its morals and dignity. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at June 26, 2020 10:08 AM (6O8J+) 174

I was totally triggered by a meme on FB. Someone posted a picture of young soldiers in their Higgins boat on their way to Utah beach. The point the poster was trying to make is that these young men were heading into battle to save freedom so their grandchildren can desecrate their monuments. All I could see is a group of white supremacists so dedicated to their white supremacy that, even while facing certain death in battle, draped nooses over the sides of their boat to lynch black soldiers once reaching land. I get that you might try to say the ropes were for tying up the boat and equipment, but the message is clear, poc were not welcome.

That looks like a good way to accidentally get wax in your pipe.
Take a stick as a "match," light it off the candle, light the pipe with the match. Or, nowadays, take a butane lighter and light it off the candle, so you don't develop "Subcutaneous Bic Wheel Calluses" from flicking. (Muldoon can tell you the # on that.) I agree wholeheartedly with using mockery, and working on supporters of the Dem-Media Mob instead of on the Mob Leaders. Our side and PDT need to fit strategy and tactics to the enemy. My youngest's HS graduation was a drive-by and it actually turned out rather nice. First stop, principal conferred diploma through window and guidance counselor handed in a goody-bag. Second stop, everybody got out and had pics taken on a little dais. Got to chat with principal and teachers one-on-one, no boring speeches, no crowd, no long lines.

------- Same for us. My HS actually had a paper "smoking pass" you had to apply for and have signed by a parent. Those with a pass could stand in a large yellow striped box in the parking lot. There was a pretty vibrant counterfeit underworld surrounding said pass, as you would assume. Posted by: BunkerInTheBurbs at June 26, 2020 10:35 AM (xoX4A) 362

All over the media, I'm reading the exact same stories that I read in 2016. Seriously, it is the EXACT SAME PLAYBOOK as 2016: * Polls (man made prediction models to control human behavior) all with Trump down 7-12 pt. * "Republicans" (like Colin Powell, Carly Fiorina) all coming out and bravely endorsing the Dem because Trump is "dangerous" * Dems saying Trump will not accept the results of the election (in truth, Dems are the *only* ones who refuse to accept the results of elections) They literally are doing everything the same except THIS time they're hysterical and burning down Dem run cities and knocking over statutes of George Washington. The paperwork involved killed productivity because they tried to do everything "build to order." Evidently, the geniuses involved in this plan were unaware of the fact that a paper trail for individual small parts wasn't a good idea. By small parts, I mean stuff welded onto larger assemblies that could be picked up by the dozens in one hand. And it didn't get any better for the larger assemblies because we'd have to do paperwork for individual final assemblies, final assemblies we normally turned out by the hundreds, but, were treating each one like a custom build.

I don't know how many businesses are going to knuckle under to the second wave nonsense.
They cannot afford it. Businesses have a choice: They can remain open, defy government and risk losing their license or, they can permanently close their doors because they are bankrupt. Of course, they risk getting sued, but, see: bankruptcy.

Inventory is cheap. Labor is expensive.
If more inventory saves on labor, then, you're probably ahead. The trick is identifying what needs to be kept on hand and the inventory levels that should be maintained. Well, time to wander.
Dog needs a shot, mom needs a few groceries. And, I need to go pick up my new wheel gun! Later, all! Woot!

They're quite readably, by the way. Very little archaic language.

Question for the horde.
I have a framed picture on my wall, a 9x12 photo of two bears. It's fairly old, I guess, but I can't speculate on what decade. It's one of those chintzy "3D" pictures that predate the holography that became a thing in the late 80s. The surface is a plastic "fresnel" lens, and when the viewer moves side to side, the image has the uncanny illusion of depth. My question is: what are these prints called? I want to find more, but I have no idea what to search for. Posted by: Taqiyyologist at June 26, 2020 11:18 AM (lW69B) 590
Möbius strip clock hands on a giant clock tower.
In a well landscaped and manicured park, passing a Cheech and Chong sized joint with fellow townsfolk. Wait, maybe not. I think there is a nasty bug going around. I almost felt the unity. Posted by: Denny Crane! at June 26, 2020 11:19 AM (tzPoc) 591
I've got some old propane bottles and can't find anywhere to dispose of
them. The landfill and scrapyard won't take them. Any ideas? Posted by: f'd at June 26, 2020 11:01 AM (XfhKA) They make very entertaining rifle targets. Posted by: Bert G, @bertg on Parler at June 26, 2020 11:28 AM (59YkD) 592

Scrappers would take them sliced up. I think he drilled a couple holes in them first, with a very slow, water cooked drill press first, to ensure that no gas remained.
