92 I find Hendrick Terbrugghen interesting partly for his own talent and partly because he makes me see a precursor to Rembrandt. Terbrugghen's ability to give each figure it's own face and posture and his effective use of light, especially candle light, is remarkable. Even the ordinary scenes like this one are made notable by the techniques of individuality and light.

I think that's a big part of it, but I think we need to look at both sides of the ledger here. I think that the kindergarten forever mentality is so pervasive because our society has stopped demanding that people grow up and act responsibly.

There's no longer any clear rite of passage to act as a separator between childhood and adulthood. It's a concept that emerges spontaneously in cultures across the world. I think it's something we need.

I don't remember the gum, but I do recall the two different kinds of candy cigarettes. There were the ones that were just white candy, kind of chalky, with a little red paint on the tips to look like a lit cigarette.

The better ones were the tubes of chocolate, each one inside a paper sleeve, packaged in a box that looked like the Camel pack. To this day when I read a story in which cigarettes are mentioned as a form of payment or exchange, I think of those.

173 I used to have a large plastic 5 gallon office water carboy that we fitted with a cap for fermenting wine to let the CO2 escape.

We bought a cheap hookah at a flea market, removed the bowl (which held about a quarter of an ounce of marijuana) and attached it to the fermenting cap.

We then drilled holes in the side of the carboy and insert fitting to which we attached lengths of rubber gas line which I had leftover from a car repair project.

We would fill the carboy about half way with water and then everybody would inhale until the rest of the carboy was full of pot smoke.

At that point we would pop the top off, somebody would get down over the top of the carboy and we would blow a shotgun hit out of the top.

The recipient would often times pass out from inhaling so much pot smoke and from lack of oxygen. In this way, we were able to get really f*cked up from $30 a quarter ounce, Mexican brick weed.

The point the poster was trying to make is that these young men were heading into battle to save freedom so their grandchildren can desecrate their monuments. All I could see is a group of white supremacists so dedicated to their white supremacy that, even while facing certain death in battle, draped nooses over the sides of their boat to lynch black soldiers once reaching land. 189 My mother in law bought me those for both boys' births.

They're awful. The taste isn't that good. The gum is too hard. The little taste there is disappears almost instantly.

Back then they were pretty good.

I've been tempted to order some Fizzies online, but you just know they've changed that formula and they won't taste the way I remember them.

And Necco wafers. B'Gal was hooked on those recently and she was devastated when they went under.

They weren't. Roosevelt re-segregated the armed forces. They had started to integrate (not systematically, but progress was underway) after the Great War, but Roosevelt put an end to that during the buildup for WWII.

Which is one of the reasons I find the SJWs spouting off and quoting Roosevelt (either Franklin or Eleanor) so tiring.

Take a stick as a "match," light it off the candle, light the pipe with the match.

Or, nowadays, take a butane lighter and light it off the candle, so you don't develop "Subcutaneous Bic Wheel Calluses" from flicking. (Muldoon can tell you the # on that.)

My mom's neighbor friend is a COVID obsessive. She tracks cases every day and is wailing about the second wave.

I told her to ask about hospitalizations and fatalities. Spoiler alert: they aren't rising much, and rising much less quickly than the infection rate.

You don't want to get COVID by any means, but if you're outside of certain very vulnerable groups then it probably isn't going to kill you. These people focus just on cases and see an out-of-control problem.

Darius Leonard says that he was racially profiled and kicked out of the
restaurant after having a private conversation about Black Lives Matter

He said that a white customer complained to the restaurant's manager,

accusation.

Any evidence of what happened to Jussie Leonard or just the accusation is enough now to get someone to lose their job?

My youngest's HS graduation was a drive-by and it actually turned out rather nice. First stop, principal conferred diploma through window and guidance counselor handed in a goody-bag. * "Republicans" (like Colin Powell, Carly Fiorina) all coming out and bravely endorsing the Dem because Trump is "dangerous"

* Dems saying Trump will not accept the results of the election (in truth, Dems are the *only* ones who refuse to accept the results of elections)

They literally are doing everything the same except THIS time they're hysterical and burning down Dem run cities and knocking over statutes of George Washington.

I worked at a small manufacturing company that tried to go from "build to stock" to "build to order" and it was a complete disaster.

The paperwork involved killed productivity because they tried to do everything "build to order."

Evidently, the geniuses involved in this plan were unaware of the fact that a paper trail for individual small parts wasn't a good idea.

By small parts, I mean stuff welded onto larger assemblies that could be picked up by the dozens in one hand.

And it didn't get any better for the larger assemblies because we'd have to do paperwork for individual final assemblies, final assemblies we normally turned out by the hundreds, but, were treating each one like a custom build.

I maintain that the shape of the cumulative case curve and the duration would be remarkably similar for seasonal influenza if we followed the same testing and reporting strategy as was used for COVID-19.

Time course of influenza season is usually about four months, first uptick in November, then peak in January, tapering off into late March. (Dec,Jan,Feb,Mar).

Total numbers would also be within the same order of magnitude.

No, can't make the numbers work.

I was at one of the other diners in town a few days ago. He had a full staff on, was seating an average of 22 people and getting short ticket totals. Instead of spinning his wheels he was going backwards.

Two of the nearby restaurants closed permanently.

Goal: Increase manufacturing and distribution efficiency and alleviate bottlenecks.
Method: JIT/Kanban/6-Sigma/etc.
Outcome: Increased efficiency.
Secondary outcome: Reduced costs.
New goal: Implement JIT/Kanban/6-Sigma/etc. in all industries for its own sake.

I just loved "Six Sigma" in software. Made no damn sense. It was targeted at - and effective for - manufacturing. Software development != manufacturing. There were other things that developed, but the industry spun its wheels for a decade trying to adapt manufacturing models to software.

Go where they sell propane? Cylinders are date-stamped, and cannot be used after the expiry date, and recertifying them is expensive.

You are talking about the small bottles used for Coleman stoves? Does some group there run a household hazardous waste collection on a regular basis?

I have often wished there was a gravel pit nearby to which I could take them and use them for target practice. No such luck.

There is a device on the market which would allow you to refill them using a larger propane cylinder / tank such as those used for gas grills. No idea how well it works or if there are any safety issues for doing this.

OTOH, an empty shelf with a customer in front of it is an opportunity lost. Just-in-time is great from a theoretical perspective, but as someone who worked in retail management, it's not as great in practice where demand is often highly variable from day to day.

++++++++++++
Because the VC and Board guys don't usually bring in MBAs to run all aspects of the business until after the first growth stage (which is meteoric) is petering out. Then they pivot to "effective management" and away from "innovation and market creation" and upshift on the M&A machine. Then they integrate the aquistions, "leverage the synergies" by laying off redundant HR/payroll folks, etc. and then cutting further.

It's fairly predictable. Some of it is necessary. But none of them seem to understand Price's Law and they often cut the wrong people.

589 Question for the horde.

I have a framed picture on my wall, a 9x12 photo of two bears. It's fairly old, I guess, but I can't speculate on what decade.

It's one of those chintzy "3D" pictures that predate the holography that became a thing in the late 80s. The surface is a plastic "fresnel" lens, and when the viewer moves side to side, the image has the uncanny illusion of depth.

My question is: what are these prints called? I want to find more, but I have no idea what to search for.

I had an old semi-retired police friend in Michigan who had a business that took them and sliced them with an industrial band saw. Scrappers would take them sliced up. I think he drilled a couple holes in them first, with a very slow, water cooked drill press first, to ensure that no gas remained.
