Yeah, those boats are ridiculously under-sized. Nobody could hope to get much fish from a canoe that's barely big enough to hold two people. Even if you managed a big catch, where would you put the fish, let alone the nets?

Ditto on the colors. I really need to do a bit of research on the materials used to achieve such nice colors. I know they used lapis lazuli for blue, but that's a pretty expensive way to go.

As to the cloak, the answer is simple. No matter how many times you tell them, the damn laundromat insists on too much starch.

48 Perhaps I need more coffee but my first thought on seeing this painting was: "Okay. The Wisconsin Friday fish fry is all set."

Looking at it more, I'm intrigued by the brilliant colors and lively postures of the figures. I also like that Jesus is portrayed as a muscular man not some anorexic soy boy, reflecting his work as a carpenter.

A painting like this must have been a spot of bright color in a room, especially if placed correctly to catch some light.

BTW, Jacopo Bassano did some remarkable paintings using moon light. They are very effective and powerful.

Posted by: JTB at July 06, 2020 09:44 AM (7EjX1)

49 The composition is interesting. This is a depiction of the calling of the first Disciples. In the story in Luke 5, Peter is a main character and in a heavily Catholic culture, during the Protestant Reformation, Jesus and peter would take center stage. yet here, the guy in pink with the green cape is dominant. I wonder if that's John. It's interesting that this figure looks like Jesus and is dressed in similar colors--Bassano mixed Jesus's yellow and blue for the Disciple's green. He is active to Jesus's calm. He runs while Jesus sits. His hair is wild. He also counters Peter. Peter is all faith while this disciple looks like he cannot believe what just happened and is questioning Jesus. If this is John, then this is doubly interesting since their roles will later switch. John will be with Jesus to the end while Peter will deny Him. This is a neat find, CBD.

55 Cool painting. The main thing I notice is that everybody is bearded except the two guys hauling on the net (though they might have goatees). Sure, you couldn't go down to Jerusalem Drugs and pick up a Gillette razor and some soap, but still a lot of men were clean-shaven then. Beards didn't get to be a fashion among Roman men until Hadrian's time, more than 100 years after Christ. So what did they use to shave? Olive oil and a very very very sharp knife?

61 Decades ago, a buddy of mine and I, up in the northwest visiting my buddy's family, neither of us fishermen, were in a canoe, and paddled out in this big lake, merrily tangling our lines and catching nothing.

This old bearded feller, apparently an experienced fisherman, starts yelling from the shore, "You're too far out, boys! This time of day, the fish are all up here in these grassy shallows." By the time we rowed up there, he was gone, but you could actually see all the fish wiggling around. Miraculous.

Okay, I made up the part about the old guy, but if he'd been there with some good advice, we might've caught something.

was just sitting in the dealership waiting for my oil change to finish. I was not wearing a mask because I was up in a corner of the sales floor where I could get some computer work done while wearing ear plugs to tune out the horrendous music. I'm at least 30 feet away from anybody, on the other side of a partition.
Eventually, this woman comes in and sits in the same area about 20 feet away. She couldn't contain herself because eventually she moseys over and asked me to put my mask on. At this point she starts screeching at me so I just said, call a cop. She keeps screeching, I keep saying calmly, call a cop. Finally she goes and sits down and glares at me until my car is ready.

Gritty, while Bassano's is light and colorful.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at July 06, 2020 09:49 AM (rpbg1)

Call both up and look at them side by side - Raphael, 1515, Bassano, 1545. Clearly, Bassano had studied Raphael's painting and made some sketches of it, since every character in the painting is the same, and even their various hand gestures are the same.

Still, I prefer what Bassano did with it. He's removed everything that is extraneous to the story, such as the large storks in the foreground and the crowds in the back, and focused all of the attention on the 6 characters in the boats. Then, he's made all of them pop out of the canvas with a fantastic use of color.

Admittedly, the green cape makes no sense on a fishermen, and neither does having him stand up in a small boat. (and in BOTH paintings - what is this, rub a dub dub, 3 men in a tub?) BUT as a magnificent splash of color meant to draw your eye to the top center of the triangle created by it and the ends of the boats, left and right, it works beautifully.

For me, Raphael's version is much more skilled, but Bassano's is far more enjoyable to look at.

141 Stopped at a bike shop over the weekend to buy a new chain and master link. To my pleasant surprise, not one of the employees or customers was wearing a mask (they are "mandatory" in my county - spit.) As I was chatting with the cashier about this and that, a Karen comes marching in with her two young children, all of them face diapered.

The Karen looked at me and several of the other customers, started towards the desk to speak with the manager, (you could see it and sense it) and upon seeing the manager and counter guy also not wearing masks, she let out an audible "hmmph", took her two junior Karens firmly by the hand and marched out of the store, with an "I'll just order it on Amazon where it's safe" tossed over
her shoulder.

The cashier and I both said "OK, Karen" at almost the same time, and had a great laugh over it. (She was already out the door, we just said it to the air.)

See, bike people take a lot of abuse here, and as a bike person I generally stay out of it, but bike people tend to be a stubbornly independent lot.

142 It's possible that the standing figure is St. Peter, being impetuous, and the kneeling figure is his brother St. Andrew. The three in the other boat are St.s James, John and their father, Zebedee, their partners in the fishing business.

I like that the Raphael includes the crowds on the shore, who are the reason Jesus is in the boat. He asked to be rowed out, so he could preach to the people.

The colors are gorgeous. There's nice eye-leading flow across the painting.

the Renaissance palette mirrored that of the Medieval Age but for three pigments: Naples yellow, smalt and carmine lake (cochineal). Other reds were vermilion and madder lake, which brought to Europe by crusaders in the 12th century.

The Renaissance color palette also featured realgar and among the blues azurite, ultramarine and indigo. The greens were verdigris, green earth and malachite; the yellows were Naples yellow, orpiment, and lead-tin yellow. Renaissance browns were obtained from umber. Whites were lead white, gypsum and lime white, and blacks were carbon black and bone black.

185 Make no mistake. This left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution. In so doing they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence and hunger; and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery and progress. To make this possible, they are determined to tear down every statue, symbol and memory of our national heritage.

Damn. This is one hell of an address. He didn't quite call for blood-in-the-streets counter-revolution, but he didn't pull many punches, at least not yet (I am all of 50% through it). The Press had better be right that this speech was enjoyed only by the hardest of hardcore Deplorables. Because if that isn't true, if it had any broader appeal, they might be cooked. The battle lines were very clearly drawn here.

yes if you are from water rich North America or Europe, neither The Jordan River or the Sea of Galilee is much. HOWEVER if your from fresh water poor Israel they are fantastic. Now what you also probably missed, was the Banias on the Golan:

Banias River is a river in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It is the easternmost of the three main northern tributaries of the Jordan River; together with the Dan River and the Snir Stream, it forms the Jordan River's upper catchment.

And The Banias, on a hot day, is fantastic in any language

This is a common experience for me, going to "famous" places. Whether a physical landmark or something manmade, my tendency is to see it, and say "is that it? Is that all there is to this?"

Interestingly though, not Rushmore. Someone mentioned last week, that Rushmore seems small, and frankly I think that's because people have a misperception that viewing area is right up next to it.

I blame North By Northwest.

Rushmore is majestic, and one cannot walk away from it without marveling at the technological achievement, as well as its artistic value.

Forget the good things, remember the bad things. You are a victim, your parents were victims, their parents were victims. Never forget, never recover, dwell on the fact that you are a victim

Our guests here have had miserable lives. They've been neglected, fed worthless food (when they were fed at all), allowed to be infested with fleas, never treated for parasites, ignored and never socialized.

Yet I don't doubt that they'll all come around. They'll learn to trust us, to be happy here, to realize we're trying to repair the damage done so that they can go to forever homes and be valued companions.

Why can a dog forgive the abuse it has personally suffered, yet people have to harp on a past that we've largely ameliorated at great cost?

249 Doc_0, John Hayward, with an excellent thread: https://bit.ly/2CbT2EM

Excerpt:

That's one reason "progressives" are so eager to erase the past, revise history, tear down the statues, burn the books. They don't want anyone to see how much they resemble the old monsters, how much their methods resemble those of yesterday's tyrants and conquerors.

America has stumbled, but never fallen. We've made mistakes, and benefited from a system that prevented the mistakes from becoming eternal. No one with a full understanding of history could reasonably argue that any of its chapters since 1776 would be better without us.

And that is why the hungry shadows lurking at the edge of freedom's light want to prevent you from having a full understanding of history. For at least half a century, they have wanted nothing more. You can defeat them by remembering. Teaching history is now an act of defiance.

The world needs America more than ever. We were fooled into thinking history ended at the turn of the century, but the truth is that the greatest challenge still lies ahead. We must now defeat Tyranny 2.0, fully upgraded for the Information Age, spreading its ideas like a virus.

It's just this simple: if America does not boldly lead the fight against tyranny once again, the tyrants will win. We are indispensable. Only we can decisively reject the dark ideas that have found such a broad audience around the world, including in our classrooms.

This is the same dumb mindset as the trend in cities and school districts to improve crime statistics by reclassifying certain things as non-criminal or simply not reporting.

You can't celebrate the good in society by erasing the bad, else you would have no framework for comparison and contrast and honest attempts at learning from past mistakes.

I think I remember a posting several months ago about Cordero being hospitalized, either Ace posted it or someone else did . I have seen nothing in reports of preexisting conditions , he has a one year old daughter with Amada Kloot.

I posted this because there was interest in the time of Cordero's hospitalization and his severe reaction to the virus.

In some people without prexisting conditions, this virus promotes incredible amounts of inflammation. My guess is Cordero's problems started early on, when MD's didn't know what symptoms to try to treat for( remember, everyone was begging for ventilators because of low oxygen levels in affected patients. People were dying anyway because pumping more oxygen wasn't the answer, suppressing inflammation and elevating low red blood cell counts was the better answer because without red blood cells, there's nothing for the oxygen to be transported on. Treating people BEFORE they became so ill was also the answer) .

The medical community has learned much about treating this virus and I think that is why the death rate is so much lower. Along with not shipping infected people into nursing homes.

Heard a talk radio guy discussing the new "mandate".

First, it's not a law. He was not even sure if Abbot, for whom I have lost all respect, can issue that sort of executive order.

Second, it's non-enforceable. You can't detain someone for not wearing a mask.

So, it's pure virtue signalling. The cities will comply, the rest of the state won't, in varying degrees.

303 Here's a story the Horde will enjoy: I have been spending quite a bit of time at my sister's cottage in NE WI. everyday, I've been going for long hikes in different state parks. a couple of weeks ago, I went walking in one and was a bit confused by the reaction of people I met on the trail. Nobody returned by greeting. I'd say "hi" and they just stared back at me. I thought, "wtf is up with these people? they are on vacation. why are the so unfriendly?" the next day when I was out walking, I got a vey different reaction, everyone was nice. so I was thinking I must have visited when all the crabasses were present - except that it happened again yesterday. I went to church and got a few glares. then I went hiking in a park and got more hard looks, including glares from a bunch of tough looking bikers, which really alarmed me, since there was nobody else around. when I got home, I was bathed in sweat and couldn't wait to shower and when I was standing in front of the bathroom mirror, I suddenly realized what the problem was. I was wearing a Marquette t-shirt that I got for free at a basketball game last winter. tt says 'BLEED BLUE" in huge letters, with Marquette Basketball in small letters above it. People were reading the BLEED BLUE on my chest, thought immediately that it was a political anti-cop statement and assumed that I was some sort of antifa scum. Hence the hateful looks. I laughed for about 10 minutes - and believe me, I will never ever wear that t-shirt in public again. the good news is there are a lot of patriots out there- however, it's kind of awful to think they thought I was on the commie side.

305 Abbott put himself in a catch 22. The mandate is not legal. If someone doesn't wear a mask because of a medical condition you can't ask them what/why/etc. because of HIPPA which is an actual law. You also can't make business enforce it then punish them if they fail because of the above. Even asking someone about the medical condition can be a YUGE fine for a business. Plus unless he changed the law about carrying a gun and face coverings he is forcing people to break the law... I think the 2nd and 5th amendments trump a mandate that isn't even legal... Yes, in some individuals, the blood vessels become severely inflamed which causes blood clots to form. Same with the lungs.
It's why steriods have gotten more attention lately as a treatment to prevent the severe inflammation some people get.

Cordero was hospitalized in NYC in mid March, before HCQ or any of the other treatments were getting any attention.

332 Goodmorning! Done with morning chores, sitti g here with covfefe and AoSHQ.

I love the subject matter, the colors are beautiful...but I don't like the painting at all. I dislike the slash of boats across the center of the painting. The composition is chaotic, and my eye does not naturally travel to the subject of the painting: is the main subject Christ? He's off to the side. Is it the hail of fish (as the title says)? There's only a bit of net showing.

They told everyone that they had just been robbed and asked that we wait for police as witnesses. No one had any idea what the guy looked like because who looks at people in the bank?

Other than the video, you probably wouldn't even need a mask for that kind of bank robbery.

It's not about the money, not anymore. There are six states of wealth:
- Poor. Cannot make ends meet.
- Getting by. Makes ends meet, but little left over.
- Near rich. Decent life, some savings, but not truly secure.
- Rich. Have what's needed, can survive for long periods or indefinitely without income. No debt or major obligations that are not paid for.
- Very rich. Top of the world. Can bug out at any time. Actual elite.
- Scorekeeping. The money doesn't matter anymore. It is about keeping score against the other scorekeepers. The money can't really buy you anything anymore because you already have it all.

Bezos and his buddies are Scorekeepers. It isn't about money anymore, so it is about something else. For Bezos, it appears to be about monopoly and power.

The pipeline isn't on their land, it cuts 70 feet under the Missouri river north of the reservation, therefore the pipeline threatens their water supply or something.

And we all know who is paying for the lawsuits. The man who stands to profit greatly from the trains which will be carrying the oil, over rails, through towns, over bridges that cross the missouri river. Warren Buffet.

398 Seems t'me...

If a business requires you to wear a mask, or requires you to wear a yellow hat, or any other arbitrary and silly rule, a customer can't object to the requirement - a business should have a right to refuse service to people not wearing yellow hats. So, if it's the business's ruling, don't kick up a fuss with the poor gal at the door, just wear a yellow hat or leave.

The HIPPA escape clause only works where the government is involved.

I am grateful that throughout this nonsense, we have not had any such demands made of us. Not a single Gladys Kravits chiding us for being 5.3 feet apart. Never wore masks and never were asked to. Life in Smallville - most folks just sort-of wave at the epidemic and go on.

One exception. Milady went to Goodwill and was told, twice, by two different gals, that she was supposed to wear a mask. She just said, "I'm not required to." Each replied, oh, okay. Heh.

In BiggerCity yesterday at the Sprouts™ store, we weren't the only ones unmasked, but the others I could count on one hand. Double whammy of City and Hip Store. They had all the signs and floor lines and everything. (The Exit Only door opened for me when I went in, though! haha) Confirmed with the checker that they were actually seriously enforcing all the virtue signals (my term, not hers). As we left, I told her, "It is not this way on my planet."

Checking for am I willowed nood monkey...
