She simply replied "Fuck off" to Hull, per screenshots he posted of his confronting her about it.

Probably not that well compensated. The main payoff for a lot of these guys is cushy government jobs when their candidate wins, "consultant" gigs, jobs with lobbying firms, and the occasional book deal. But you also have to live in the DC area, which is ridiculously expensive, especially if you want your kids to go to the right schools and such.
He and his wife have likely been living far above their means in order to keep up with the social circles that they want to run in.

Trump speaks of how a President Jackson may have avoided such a bloody destructive civil war, and I have a raw feeling that it was industrialists more than slavery that drove the initial decision leading to war ... slavery became the "populist sloganeering" campaign. I've seen plenty of well compensated people get into huge financial trouble. Although the specifics are different, in general it's always the same old story. Getting so far behind on taxes is a classic for people who don't have withholding and who are supposed to make quarterly payments; and then of course they blow all their money so they don't have any to make the payment when it's time.

It would appear not really. The war devastated the south....but changing over to a paid system of labor for the former slaves worked pretty easily. This isn't to say it was a great system or anything for the former slaves....but if slavery had been banned without the war it would have been a minor blip in "southern life".

That's the point. The Civil War was basically inevitable. They couldn't get rid of slavery without massive economic and social upheaval, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain it as part of the Union. The slaveholding class were the political leaders in the South, and if you're headed for destruction either way, better to fight.

If was the Nullification Crisis, wherein Calhoun and company claimed they had no obligation to pay tariffs the federal government. Yes, this was before the time the United States Supreme Court announced states could ignore federal laws. To which I ask: why should states honor USSC decisions if statutes can be ignored? Because that's the only logical conclusion to how the current USSC dealt with the current nullification crisis.

It's really why I get the whole Confederate Flag thing (though I have no personal feelings towards the flag itself).
Most descendants of the Confederate Armies came from dirt poor families who never came within an inch of owning slaves. Fighting FOR slavery was against their self-interest, so they definitely weren't fighting to keep a perpetual working class that took a lot of their work away from them.
Reading Bud Robertson's biography of Stonewall Jackson was enlightening because he used some data to show the seachange in opinion towards secession in Virginia. It didn't happen when Lincoln won, or when South Carolina seceded, or when Fort Sumter got fired upon. It was when Lincoln called up 70,000 troops. Suddenly the Southern people felt like the North was invading. I get that.
I also get that the vast VAST majority of the Southern aristocracy wrote often about preserving their state as slave owners.

Two questions: How seriously was this option considered? and Do you think it would have worked?

Trump's exactly right, Jackson DID stop a civil war when he was

South Carolina and some of the other southern states were already
starting to talk about Secession, and threatened to hold a vote.
Jackson heard about it, and publicly promised that if it happened, he
would head down there and Personally Hang the first man who voted for it
from the first tree that he could find.
Given Jackson's history, no one doubted that Jackson would do
exactly what he promised, and all talk of secession at that time ended
right there.

Jackson was a bully and thought he was smarter than he actually was. His arrogance nearly cost us New Orleans during the War of 1812 but the British messed up worse than he did and made him a Hero by marching straight up to his fortified lines.

One thing that's easy to overlook now - at that time, the Fed'l Government didn't have nearly that much power, and certainly not that much money. There was no Federal Reserve, there was no way to create money like we do now. The Civil War itself was financed by Treas. Secretary Salmon P. Chase making up a financing system on the fly. Don't see any way the Feds could have come up with the money to do a slave purchase scheme.

Not necessarily. Plenty of workers were picking cotton even into the early 20th century, and it's likely that slaves would have been shifted to other jobs, especially with westward expansion.

Sure, I understand that. But at that time, we had made the practice of importing slaves illegal. So if the Gov't bought the slaves, the supply would be almost entirely gone.
Additionally, there was a whole lot of un/underemployed people in the South. So if each slave buyout could buy three years labor of a free person, at least that would have given the Southerners a head start on changing their financial structure.

Lincoln's greatest political mistake was asking the governors of the Southern states that had not seceded to provide him with troops rather than remain neutral. Some of the residents of the Southern states still in the Union at that time had immediate relatives who had recently settled Texas and even Alabama and Mississippi. The Corwin Amendments proposed to retain slavery to entice the states to remain in the Union failed because people weren't going to fight their immediate family.
It was a war to establish a nation, which would have resulted in another generation or more of slavery, and that obviously would have been horrible. So I don't knock on Southerners who honor their war dead at all. And frankly, if anyone had a clue the war would last four years and result in such a horrific death and casualty count, it never would have been fought in the first place. The Union assumed it would be a swift and decisive win. It's the great unspoken truth about American history.

I visited a historic plantation recently and that point was brought up. The North kept up with technology of the time while the South was still using the slave based economy (not to put too fine of a blunt on that).
It would have bankrupted a lot of families to modernize instead of relying on slaves.

If the North had been more concerned about modernizing and helping the south get past the need for slaves and less being patronizing jerks, they could have worked together on the issue and many would have changed over. From my vague history recall, tobacco is a super labor intensive and land intensive crop - it depletes the land each harvest or something so they needed more and more land and tons of workers- so the south's reliance on tobacco and cotton (also very labor intensive) were not sustainable long term.

Arguably the southern general populace had an interest in industrializing but their political class did not. I'd guess... it depends.
I mean, I'm guessing you really don't want to piss off a Liberian cop. Especially if he's feeling peckish.
But in Western Europe? Jay-zus. It's almost sad really. They're like a gay version of the Cub Scouts.
I guess their docile, low-t, decadent post-Christian populace is easily controlled, because seeing a German or French cop as an American requires that you stifle your laughter. Just to be polite, though. Not because you're afraid.

Sherman's taking Atlanta helped secure that presidential win. Prior to the victory at Atlanta, the election could have gone either way. The Northern population was getting very tired of the lengthy casualty lists, war weariness if you will. Atlanta was a light at the end of a dark tunnel.

About 18 unarmed black men die due to police activity a year. In a country of 300,000,000.
In Chicago, 187 black men were shot by other black men between the TWO police shootings this year.

I remember reading a story about Iwo Jima, some marines were in fox holes, under heavy fire. One japanese attacker carrying a satchel charge was shot down right next to a foxhole, and when his satchel bomb went off, it blew his body to bits, as well as stunning the marines in their foxhole just a few feet a away. The torso of the dead jap had all its clothes blown off and landed, ass facing up, in the lap of one of the marines. Coming to, the marine looked down, saw what he thought was his own ass facing him, and shrieked "Oh my god!!! am I hit that bad????"
the teller of the tale said that, in spite of being under constant machine gun and grenade fire, everyone in earshot laughed so hard that they were completely useless for the next 5 minutes or so!
and that's how we humans survive hard times.
