NBC Goes After The Federalist, Demanding that Google (The Monopolist in Internet-Served Ads) No Longer Permit Advertisers to Advertise On It;
Google Eagerly Agrees

Update: the leftwing censorship group that pitched "Let's deplatform The Federalist to NBC" has a long, long list of right wing sites that need to be deplatformed.

Pretty much all of them.

Except for National Review, The Bulwark, and The Dispatch.

Who will soon win the ideological war on the right -- because they're the only three sites the leftwing tech monopolists have left standing.

...

...

The regular media and social media have been playing this game for a long, long time.

A leftwing activist brings a "problematic" comment to the attention of a media organization, inducing the media organization to begin putting pressure on a social media company to censor/suppress/deplatform the speaker.

This organization has often been CNN -- which has its own Deplatforming Unit working on no other stories except bird-dogging candidates for censorship to the Social Media Monopoly Hunters.

The media organization keeps up a campaign of negative PR on the social media company-- "Why is Twitter permitting Alex Jones to tweet?" -- until the social media company agrees to deplatform.

The media pretends that this is just "news gathering," "just asking questions," but that's a lie: they have a specific end in mind. They have a specific last paragraph of the story in mind: the person or site that they're targeting succumbs to CNN's negative PR pressure and deplatforms the target.

You can tell that the media seeks this goal because the negative stories stop the moment the deplatorming demand is agreed to: they do not go on, for example, to do a story about how Twitter gave in to cancel culture activists and thereby reduced free speech. That's a story they could write after a cancelation -- but they don't.

Because the game is that all negative PR will stop once you abide by CNN's decision that this person or this website no longer be permitted to speak freely.

Now leftwingers have gone after The Federalist for -- get this! -- Criticizing the media.

NBC wrote a story and demanded that Google do something about Google ads appearing on The Federalist.

"The Federalist published an article claiming the media had been lying about looting and violence during the protests, which were both included in the report sent to Google."

We can't have people on the right criticizing the media! That must not be permitted!

One of the outlets The Federalist criticized was, of course, NBC "News."

And now Google has given NBC the last paragraph of their story: The Federalist is now blacklisted from advertising with Google.

The monopolist that controls 90%+ of the internet advertising market.

I'm sure that won't reduce The Federalist's reach.

I'm sure the entire point of this exercise wasn't to reduce the Federalist's reach.

And National Review -- which takes Cash Money Donations from Google through the National Review Institute -- will be completely silent about their patron's destruction of yet another conservative voice (one that is, coincidentally, an ideological and market competitor to National Review), or, if forced to address this, will defend Google's deplatorming of a conservative rival as a Corporate Monopoly just using its own right to free speech.

I'm so sick of this. I'm sick of this.

Andrew Egger of the Dispatch -- one of the many pseudoright grifters who has been telling the right that "corporations can do whatever they want" and advising us to "let the market solve the problem" in, oh, say, 60-100 years -- is actually shocked by this.

Dude, they've been doing this forever. We've been telling you that the target was not Alex Jones.

Alex Jones was not their target. Alex Jones was their Proof of Concept.

Alex Jones was the first to be targeted for deplatforming because they knew that cucks like you would say nothing, thereby blessing the precendent.

Thereby validating their model of just deplatforming all right wing voices.

Is this shocking?

Where have you been?

Meawnwhile, this alleged "free speech advocate" is now teeing up the next deplatofrming target: Ben Shapiro.

Well, I intend to give Ben Shapiro the same level of support during his deplatorming as he's given every other conservative who's been deplatformed: None at all.

Hey Ben, "freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences."

"Freedom of speech doesn't mean that you can compel a monopoly to serve you with the same terms they serve everyone else."

"Natural market foces will solve this problem in 60-100 years. Hopefully."

I hope these words bring you solace as YouTube bans your channel and Google (which controls 90%+ of all internet advertising in the world) denies you advertising revenue.

Oh, update: The Federalist "may rememdy" and avoid demonitization.

I assume -- by deleting the articles which criticized the media and the protesters.

Can't wait for Charles C.W. Cooke's impassioned defense of his donor deplatforming yet antoher conservative voice that competes with National Review.

Update: Well, Baseball C*ck has sputtered on Twitter, which I suppose is something.

But what will they actually do about it? Will they advocate that a 90%+ market dominator (which is well above the threshhold to be declared a "monopoly" in a market) be sued by the Federal Government's anti-trust division until they agree to stop the illegal practice of "tying" or "leveraging," that is, using your monopoly power in one area (internet advertising) to control/reduce competition in another market (internet political publications)?

I doubt it. I expect more stalwart defenses of the Poor Little Megacorporatin Monopoly Google, and advice that anyone who doesn't like Google deplaforming everyone on the right (except the Pet Kitten Pseudoright), should just wait for "natural market forces" to produce a viable competitor to Google.

In 60-100 years. Maybe.

Until then... well you can just eat fucking sand, can't you?

Interesting point: If Google is deplatforming The Federalist over comments... doesn't that mean they're treating The Federalist's comments are as the work of a publisher, not just independent comments on a platform?

There was some grumbling about breaking up AT&T for some time, but once AT&T *wanted* to be broken up, it was done within a few years.

AT&T wanted to get into the computer game and exploit their ownership of UNIX, but weren't allowed to. Under the terms of their government-granted monopoly, they couldn't get into that business. They lobbied to end their monopoly status and get broken up to enter that market.

It took about four years, by which point it was too late. But AT&T was a special case in that they were a chartered monopoly who wanted to end that special status to enter new markets.

One day National Review, The Dispatch, and The Bulwark WILL win the ideological battle on the right -- because they're the only three websites the tech monopolists permit to exist.

This is a reasonable position- isn't it? Especially if you contrast it to authoritarian pressure campaigns from petty despots whose sole purpose is to ensure only their point of view is promulgated.

I mean, we haven't passed the point where oppressive tyrants get a free pass- have we?

My Father was a senior Engineer for ATT.

He was offered a HUGE incentive to retire, when it broke up.

Almost his entire Office of Engineers, with all that corporate knowledge, did the same.

He ended up doing consulting for them for a few years after the breakup, when they suddenly figured out all that knowledge had walked out the door.

Made almost as much consulting 1/2 time, as he had with his original pre retirement salary.

There were lots of poor decisions made then.

170 My usual "Make your own financial system" monologue is increasingly unnecessary, so let me just say this. These people will continue to attack you and your faves. They believe, and not without reason, they can deplatform everyone to the right of Ben Shapiro. And possibly including him. In theory it works, but the problem is that it also strongly motivates people to get their news exclusively from antifragile sites like Infowars and Vox Day. More- they radicalize and anger Americans to the point they increasingly believe Vox Day's condemnation of a certain group that just so happens to dominate finance, media, law, and tech. And it makes clear that offering ANY tolerance to certain groups like the QUILTBAG coalition and worshippers of Judeo-Christ are why we are in this mess to begin with.

I should be sadder, but I'm not. Big Tech is creating fertile soil for the true nationalist agenda, all at the expense of Meg McCain's pie budget. And Donald Trump, great as he is, only furthers that agenda by refusing to actually enforce civic nationalist "principles" against these traitors.

191 So, Milton Friedman's whole thing, was about how a system that relies on the right people pulling the levers at the right time is doomed to failure. I think that's self-evident.

He believed part of the solution was principles and the widespread common public understanding of those principles. And actual literal openness about how things are run.

So, say the worst happens and the right starts getting shut down online, the whole right... The absolute most important thing you can do while the information is available is to understand the principles of limited government and memorize them.

As they scrub away at everything real and replace it with a phony facade, information will come in many directions and maybe a small fraction of it will seem convincing. The only defense is knowing your principles are right and that they have None. Their only principle is "a good public is a brainwashed censored public".

Teach them when and where you can, memorize them.

One thing you had to give the original ATT, they took care of their own back then.

My Dad started out working for them, climbing poles in the mountains around Yosemite. I've seen pictures that folks on his crew took of him doing the most dangerous stuff in the crew.

And even though he only had a GED (he got that so he didn't have to finish High School so he could enlist in WW2), he ended up as a Senior Engineer. All that education was given to him via ATT.

You won't see loyalty like that anymore.

300 The question that keeps coming up in my mind is "Just what are we going to do to hit back?"

It's completely outside my own area, which is overwhelmingly philosophical, historical, and literary. I do not understand how to handle this, beyond the fact that we've killed our Amazon accounts, and won't touch Comcast with a 10 foot pole (bad as Verizon is.)

But how do we make them hurt? There are so many, we have to single out just one or two, but which one(s)?

And how to do it EFFECTIVELY? Remember Alinsky. Your people have to enjoy doing it, and it cannot go on too long. The former is a problem for us because few of us are the kind of people this sort of shit appeals to. We have lives.

I truly believe that this is something that needs attention from those on our side who understand how this crap works. I do not.

PS: The facts don't care about Ben's feelings, either.

Yep. Both the CIA and NSA made seed investments in Google back in the mid 90s when Brin and Page were still grad students at Stanford working on NSF and DARPA grants doing search technology. They had a relationship ever since.

The CIA even has their own venture firm called Q-tel which sold a technology that they had developed called Keyhole which we know today as Google Earth. After purchasing Keyhole, Google signed a multi-billion dollar contract with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) which is s sister organization of the CIA.

The CIA and NSA were interested in mass surveillance technologies and discovering patterns of behavior. They picked Google and have been picking them ever since.

It's all true.

Hell, the internet itself was in fact a government funded and for a while government run exercise in moving vast amounts of information around the country. One of the principle design pillars was a robust network that could withstand all kinds of enemy attack.

It's not by chance the NSA has significant facilities located next to large AT&T interconnection facilities sprinkled around the country. People make a big mistake assuming these companies don't have long and deep ties to the US intel community. They do.

One of my favorite jobs was when I worked for a certain Bay area router company when this thing called the internet was starting to be talked about as a replacement for ARPANET. I literally had a ground floor view of the building of the initial internet backbone and learned from some of the smartest network engineers on the planet.

Things were moving so fast we had bi-weekly conference calls with a special group at HQ that ran a different code tree specifically for ISPs because they had such unique, large and growing demands and it wasn't unique to have new code spun up a couple times a week.

The problem with Google having that position is that it suggests to regulators they consider themselves to have edit authority with regard to commenters and thus who may advertise there as a result of violations...that is in complete defiance of the platform designation they have to maintained to Congress in order to have the existing platform designation luxury in its current form.

I think that concern, mostly quickly brought up by some rare grown up in the organization like legal counsel, that drove them to back down. The Federalist should have tested this de-platform warning as it would have been quite difficult for Google to defend it considering it counters one of their chief arguments to have that designation in the first place. But I get that The Federalist has no interest in being a guinea pig for the FCC here...so much more the pity.

When you are the monopolist, monopolies are GREAT!

Of course we will use our power to keep out competitive ideas.

It took a lot of work to own the nation's allowed and approved ideas. You somehow think we are giving up this power without a nasty, below the belt fight?

You really are stupid, aren't you?

Posted by: Google Management Team at June 16, 2020 06:25 PM (sy5kK)

568 I have a technical idea on how to get around Google using encrypted peer to peer communications.

I need to think on this. It would be similar to that concept the Gab guys came up with to allow comments on web sites without being on the website itself.

But it would be better if the web sites themselves bought into the concept and used it for their comment section.

Just thinking out loud, but I think you could get around the Google policing of comments because the web site wouldn't have a comment section at all.

The key though is a distributed system. That is where all of the power of Google, Amazon, etc come from. They own the data centers so they can dictate who can and can't use the internet.

I am fascinated by the technical capability that they are using in Hong Kong, where messaging is passing organically through bluetooth connection and the internet is never used.

You have to treat this as a fight against an authoritarian dictatorship, which is usually won through distributed resistance.

Ironic that while the left is in the midst of armed rebellion, the right also needs to build a resistance movement.

573 How to fight the censorship. Rule one do not wrestle in the comments sections of NBC and CNN. Your IQ drops a point with each post. Instead help get the written articles out via email, shit mail some through regular postal means. How ironic would it be for final death blow to NBC and CNN that a bunch of luddites used written word and old school mediums to make sure the message was passed. Work with friends to share costs of paywalls for conservative sites and share the messages./
On FB be sure to like each post by the conservatives like Candace Owens and the recent spate of black conservatives posting compelling messages at some risk to themselves. Share with people you trust and not blasted to all friends or you run risk of being fired for your opinions. The like feature is more effective as it drives their content higher in the pecking order. Time is short for all of us. Leave the comments mud bath for the dumbass manbun wearing rubes who think that will persuade anyone.
