The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

During his sermon a couple of weeks ago, our pastor mentioned that recent events had caused to think about "privilege", what it is and what it means. He suggested that a better word for it might be 'blessings'. He didn't specifically say this, but that fits in very well with the idea that progressivism is a heresy of Christianity. It's actually not dignified enough to be a heresy, it's more like a parody or lampoon.

The word 'blessing' carries with it the idea of fortune and favor, and concomitant gratitude, while 'privilege' immediately brings to mind envy, resentment, and bitterness. All of progressive religion is wrapped around those three (negative) things.

The problem is, you can't build a civilization on envy, resentment, and bitterness. That's a one-way ticket to barbarism. And this is why the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone will fail. I mean, other than the fact that they're all a bunch of idiots. CHAZ is probably filled with envy, resentment, and bitterness. Those kids are part of the most privileged, wealthy, and entitled generation that's ever existed, yet who among them have ever achieved anything they can be proud of? They all have smart phones that gives them the world literally at their fingertips and all they can do is rail and curse the world that gave them these things.

Another aspect of the progressive religion is that its disciples are taught that the reason they don't have what they think they want (influence, success, a girlfriend) is because someone is deliberately preventing them from getting these things. This entity has been called such names as "The Man" or "The System" but lately has been called "White Privilege." Like this is a zero-sum game where all of the white guys have taken all of it before anyone had the chance.

But this obviously isn't true. That always hasn't been the case. In other times and places, if you were born a serf, there was little chance you could ever be anything else. But America has been the country that provides the greatest chance that a poor person could attain a significantly better, more prosperous life.

But it's not some carefully guarded guild secret known to but a few. There are a number of ways to express the preconditions of privilege, but here is the way I like to describe it: The Ten Commandments. Yeah, yeah, boring, I know. But read them. Study them. Think about them. Try to build your life around them: Honor God. Honor your parents. Don't take things that aren't yours. Restrain your violent impulses. Restrain your sexual impulses. Never make false accusations. Do not envy (there's that word again) others when they are blessed in ways that you aren't.

Mind you, this is not an absolute guarantee of success for individuals, but over time, a culture that follows these rules will be healthier, wealthier, and more successful than those that don't. These are the building blocks of a superior civilization.

And people who follow the rules should never, ever have to apologize to those who don't.

No, they probably can't be. And it is also very historically ignorant and they misattribute causes. It isn't a Trump appointment thing. It also isn't a Bush appointment thing. Keep going back. Hell, look at Eisenhower - he was an unmitigated disaster in terms of the SCOTUS. He appointed a ton of justices and they were awful as a rule.

The problem is a powerful and largely unaccountable institution that fears for its legitimacy as winds of change blow, leading them to very predictably move toward increased state power with astonishing regularity. Conservative strict-constructionists become communists when they get to the bench. The biggest surprise at this point is that a handful of them *haven't* done so (Thomas, for example).

167 Buddhisms has a largely canonical set of sutras. The major divide is Mahayana/Threvada. Because Buddhism has no central deity, it's incredibly easy to synchrotize, and there are countless forms of syncretic Buddhism which have their own scripture, most not written. I'd start with the Triptaka which is just the standard Mahayana Buddhist text.

These are basically the blessings of liberty, combined with some ten commandments type life style. All Americans are privileged to have such success at hand, if they take responsibility for their own actions.

There are certain economic and social advantages to being born into a family with influence (of any color) ... but those children by the third generation are often spoiled and probably less content with life (as they wrap their Maserati around a tree, as Tucker puts it).

There's a scene like that in Atlas Shrugged, where John Galt is talking with one of the politicos about what terms he would come to with them. As usual, Galt refused to negotiate and said he doesn't negotiate for his life or at the point of a gun. There is then an exchange that goes something like:
Politico: But that's not true. You'd pay a doctor to set your broken bone.
Galt: Not if he's the one who broke it.

They break it and then demand that we rebuild it. They will get a rude awakening (as will everyone else) when it turns out that it can't be rebuilt.

258 SCOTUS gave it to us up the ass.

Forget about who ruled in the majority for a second. Think about what they did. The court just legislated into the Civil Rights Act what was not plainly included. In fact, Congress has tried, and failed, to add precisely what SCOTUS just stated was included. They have also stomped on people who have a right, based on religious values, to exclude certain people from their employ.

This isn't a matter of discriminating based on race, which is indefensible. There is no "cause" or religious reason that justifies that. But being gay or transgender is completely antithetical, and demonstrably has been for ages, to many religions.

Yes, thank you Gorsuch and Roberts. The so-called "originalists" who will now be legislating for us.

The white woman had to go, and then they wanted a black gay, lesbian, trans, and bi. Then they had to add physically and mentally disabled blacks. And then convicted criminals. And then the women pushed back on the convicted criminals because they're probably rapey, and it's hilarious. It is hard to predict. Is Gorsuch going to be a bust? Maybe. Looks that way. But here's the thing: there's only one chance to possibly get someone good, and that chance is a Republican president.

A Democrat *will* nominate a known-quantity anti-constitutionalist. The outcome is known in advance. A Republican will usually *try* to nominate someone decent. They often miss, or the nominee betrays the country and the president's expectations - but they at least try.

With a Republican, you have a chance - however small - to get someone decent. With a Democrat, there is no chance at all.

337 The problem with the ruling is not that "protections" are extended to homosexuals. It is that the court has - once again - read the plain text of a law, and said, yeah, it also means this other thing that it did NOT say.

Does anyone doubt that if Congress were to propose such language as either an amendment to existing law, or as a brand new law, that it would pass and be signed into law? I don't doubt it.

By doing so, they have firmly rooted the Humpty Dumpty precedent:

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."

Dude, the playbook is threadbare. If by some absurd chance you're a disaffected former commenter (cough, lorking lorker), doesn't it embarrass you to be such a tired handpuppet of other peoples' whimsy that we can see their fingers when you move your mouth?

There is a Nickelback song called Burn it to the Ground. I suggest we make it CHAZ's official theme song.

Then, along with all the other stupid stuff they do, we can call them a bunch of Nickelback-loving riTARDs.

We're screaming like demons, swinging from the ceiling
I got a fist full of fifties, the tequila just hit me
Ooooohhhhh
We got no class, no taste, no shirt, and shit faced
We got it lined up, shot down, firing back straight crown

We're going out tonight
To kick out every light
To get anything that we want
Drink everything in sight
We're going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight

Most of their lyrics are garbage. But they got wicked music. And I get a kick out of lines, 'They rally 'round the family, with a pocket full of shells' and 'what they don't know keeps the contract alive and moving'. Since I'm in favor of both of those things, the song pleases me.

410 I remember when my pastor said that Christianity is not a "hermit" religion. That we need to go out and spread the word.

Yeah. I mean he's not wrong, we should bring the gospel to those around us if we can and find the opportunity but all pastors seem to have this schizophrenia when it comes to gifts and offices.

Most of the time they agree, recognize, and teach that not all gifts are equally distributed (as the Bible clearly teaches) so all are stronger in some gifts while weaker in others. Some are called to be evangelists, some to be hospitable, some to be creative, etc.

All gifts are given to all of God's children, so to whatever degree we are gifted and have an opportunity we should reach out, but pastors seem to then think everyone is completely gifted and called to evangelism at all times in all places.

418 You can tell that this is a political issue, not an honest attempt to resolve racial issues due to how it is argued.

Any rational person can see that racism is not the real problem here. The real problem is that inner cities celebrate a culture that refuses responsibility, family, and work. Doesn't matter what color you are, abandoning those attributes means that you fail. Look at rural areas, where traditional values have not decayed as much.

A serious attempt to resolve these problems would address these attributes. Some have tried, and been attacked, because if these downtrodden inner city residents became successful, a lot of political power would be lost by others.

Firing someone simply because they are homosexual et al is being a jerk, and bad economics. But we are supposed to be free to make stupid decisions and be a jerk. I oppose firing someone who you find out is a lesbian just because of that.

If they are hitting on all the women in the shop, proselytizing, making political statements, and being generally a crappy worker, then yeah I want the fired, but for that not simply for being a lesbian.

There are plenty of rural areas, both black and white, with the same problems as inner cities - poverty, disease, illiteracy, drug use, broken homes, and on and on.

Bottom line is this is not about Trump's taxes, this is about the House of Reps challenging a President on his life before he got elected using a fishing expedition in an attempt to get "dirt" on him. That's within the purview of voters, not who controls the House.

Even in at will States, you have to document why you are firing someone or stuff like this will come back and fvck you in the a$$. Even though technically at will law states you can fire someone for any reason or no reason, doesn't mean the Courts have twisted that until it's broken.

If managers/owners would do their jobs and document problem employees performance and behavior like they should, this kind of stuff would not happen.

=======

The consensus is that only the "original" 7th century Arabic version is valid. It's that dialect that is the basis for Modern Standard Arabic, which is the common language of much of the Islamic world. It serves a similar purpose to Latin in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. I've heard that the actual modern Arabic vernaculars range from being more or less understandable between each other to essentially different languages.

It wasn't really the founders. Blame Chief Justice John Marshall and the Marbury v Madison decision, which created the doctrine of Judicial Review.

=======

Well, it kinda was the founders. They were so damn vague about the court that it left Marshall the room to grab as much power as he wanted. And I've never heard a satisfactory explanation how you derive Judicial Review from the Constitution or English Common law.

Once you give power to somebody that's ambitious, it's all over. Rules won't stop them.

526 A nation of laws, not of men requires the best men at law to work. We have no more best men and here we are.

527 agree that Yale University, founded by the slave trader Eli Yale, should be burned to the ground, just as offending statues should be torn down.

What I'm still up in the air about is should everyone who has ever attended Yale and benefited from his white-devil slave trading wealth, be fired from their positions and their assets confiscated and distributed fairly to BLM?

Yes. Start with Shirley Jackson Lee.

528 Many Universities were funding by slaving profits. Some were built in part with slave labor. But why stop there?

As the American Public Media article "Shackled Legacy" points out as an example: "At the University of Virginia, founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson, slaves cooked and cleaned for the sons of the Southern gentry."

531 Even though the thread is dead. I just want to be on record:

I have had a crush on Shirley Jones since her starring in Oklahoma.

That is all...
