Democrats and media attempt to spin "Defund The Police" to reality-based voters

Can the Democrats and the media successfully spin “Defund the police” as meaning “Let’s have a discussion about police reform” to suburban and moderate voters, while at the same time telling their base that “Defund the police” literally means there will no longer be a police presence in the cities they just destroyed?

“Trust me I’m lying” used to be an effective - and dishonest - campaign strategy to fool uncommitted voters with a phony promise, while experienced politicos knew it was all a lie. “Defund the police” is so toxic, however, that the Democrat leadership is now desperately working with the media to assure sane voters that the promise is just meaningless words to appease the angry base. In other words, they are telling not-deranged Americans to rest assured that they are lying. That should go over well with their rioting base, whom they are openly lying to.

Some great moments in “Trust me I’m lying” were Obama’s opposition to gay marriage and McCain’s pledge to “complete the danged fence.” Poor old Bill Clinton pledged to “end welfare as we know it,” knowing that a Democrat-controlled Congress would never send him such a bill. That kind of blew up in his face when the Republicans took the House in 1994 and started sending him welfare reform bills.

During Phil Bredesen’s 2018 Tennessee Senate campaign, it became clear that “Trust me I’m lying” doesn’t work anymore. The Kavanaugh nomination was tearing the country apart, and Bredesen, who was allegedly a moderate Democrat that could appeal to moderate Republicans, was trying to avoid taking a stand, but the nomination kept dragging on and getting more contentious. Finally realizing that “no opinion” was not a viable position, he attempted the “Trust me I’m lying” approach and stated that he’d vote in favor of Kavanaugh’s nomination. His campaign collapsed right then, because Republicans knew he was lying but his activist base believed him. It was supposed to work the other way around. A great many of his volunteers quit right then and there. His campaign was over.

I can’t imagine that the “Trust me I’m lying approach” will work any better on the issue of defunding the police. I genuinely enjoy the thought of Democrats telling the cable news barkers that big cities will soon be rid of men in blue, while then going on Sunday morning shows and stating that “defund the police” is just a euphemism for “reform.” Oh well, I’m sure Antifa will just smile and put their brass knuckles away, knowing that the elite of the American left are lying to them for good reasons.

Shibumi and I were in downtown Detroit last summer and the summer before to go to a couple of different concert venues.
I was amused that although there was a strong police presence there to keep everybody feeling safe, most of the cops were kind of short.
Women and Latino guys.

In recent years, however, there has been a drive to cease having their own force, because of the extra tax burden everyone has to pay. But most residents are opposed to that, so for the last several years most houses in Kensington have "Save the Kensington Police!" signs.

HOWEVER, it is still a liberal enclave, as as most areas around SF, so now many of the residents are joining in on the whole George Floyd mania with "BLM" signs, etc.

Well, now that includes "Defund the police" as the cause du jour.

So just yesterday by chance I had a reason to pass through Kensington, and there were many house that had BOTH "Save the Kensington Police!" and "Defund the Police!" signs.

I guess they want to have their own police force, but not pay them or give them any equipment.

Over that same period, in the biggest 50 cities, there were 105,000 murders. 50% went unsolved.

Camden had a corrupt and ineffective Police Force which, thanks to Union featherbedding and the like, cost them $188,000 per officer. (give or take a little) They disbanded the force and fired them all. THEN they instituted a County wide unit that would do all of what the police used to do, with a whole lot less office personal and more field personell, at the cost of about $98,000 per officer.

Now THAT is a plan - getting rid of a corrupt union and corrupt desk rats while actually adding beat cops - is a plan that obviously would improve service. Of course today's dems want nothing to do with that.

Don't know what predicated it, but I think it has been in the works for a while. The past two weeks have been brutal here with all of my New Jersey projects coming to back to life at virtually the same time. Also the plan reviewers across the board have finally gotten off dead center and are starting to do some work. Actually had one call me the other day to see if I had finished my response so he could move it off his desk. In true NJ fashion the response was at the desk of the battle ax guarding the front door - and it is beneath her to tell somebody upstairs there is a package for them at her desk. From this vantage point things in NJ seem to be getting back to full on normal.

My brother --- south side Chicago police officer --- has told me this same thing. He said that suspects will complain of having trouble breathing when he's not even restraining them.

It's almost like criminals have been trained to say certain things to fool the arresting officers into dropping their guard during the arrest. Which makes it impossible for an arresting officer to determine which suspects are telling the truth and which are just trying to gain an advantage on the officer restraining them.

Why is there a mega PD in the huge metropolis? What is the replacement plan? Is each precinct station going to have the local voters able to elect a station chief or sheriff to run it? How will they coordinate for criminals that live in one precinct but robbed or killed in a different one? OK, sometimes no-knocks can be dumb for the cops, too.

My local sheriff's department is an example. Our sheriff lost his job in a county where an incumbent practically can't lose, over one.

They had a guy who had numerous hostile interactions with police over a tax dispute with the county. Hostile but never violent.

They took the decision to issue an arrest warrant - now, this guy was a weirdo, but he almost certainly would have come willingly, or possibly with a small struggle. Since he was known to own guns, and our SD LOVES to come in places all gung-ho with their overpriced SWAT gear (but no SWAT training, of course), they opted for the no-knock raid.

What they forgot is that most of them are overweight idiots (I grew up with these guys, trust me on this) who go to the range once a year, and this guy was actually pretty smart and good with his guns. When they breached his home in force, he came out with a gun and shot three of them, one to death, before they took him out.

It was incredibly stupid from start to finish, and voters were pissed.
