Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Sunday Evening Edition! [Weasel]Well I Guess We Showed Them! Sporterized M1917 Your post about the Model 1917 and how many were sporterized, prompted me to share a picture of my Eddystone. It had been used in WWI and my Grandfather had it stored away in an old shed. It was in pretty bad shape and when he passed away, my father decided to sporterize it. He never completed it and by the time he passed away, it was a rusted hulk with really only the action worth salvaging. I decided to finish it in memory of them both and here is the result. This, guys and gals, is how that is done. What a beautiful rifle and remarkable tribute to Holly's father and grandfather! I would probably still not convert a pristine military rifle if for no other reason than I have watched too many episodes of the Antiques Roadshow, but the result in this case is amazing. Very, very nice, Holly, and thanks for sharing!! Well if you thought the Chinese Cooties were good for gun sales, just throw in a little civil unrest and rioting to really get things going! May 2020 gun sales set records, as reported here, here and here. I can't help but wonder how many of these are first time gun owners, and people who have previously been uninterested in guns and self defense. Let's just hope this causes people to think about the topic now that they've come to the dark side and cause a favorable shift in gun ownership sentiment. Last week I also mentioned buying a pair of Oakley shooting glasses and used them for the first time shooting the M1917 with positive results. The Oakley's were pricey at $100, and I suspect most of that price was due to the little 'O' on the frames. At the same time I ordered the those, I also ordered a $24 pair of clear bifocal safety glasses from Readers.com with +3.0 magnification, thinking they would be good to use shooting handguns. Unfortunately I think the bifocal part is too small, and because of the lens design, too far down to be of much use in that application. Still, the clear lenses are every bit as optically clear as the Oakley's at about one quarter the cost. The Oakley's are definitely made of sturdier material, but overall I'm not disappointed with the readers.com product. ATTENTION NoVaMoMe 2020!!Sad people who cannot make the new NoVaMoMe date of August 29th AmmoSeek - online ammo search tool GunBot - online ammo search tool SG Ammo Palmetto State Armory Georgia Arms AmmoMan Target Sports USA Here is the spotter setup I assembled after I figured out what I wanted. I found a new Leupold Mk IV M151 Scout Sniper Observation Telescope 12-40x85 with mil ranging reticle, and added a Kinetic M-loc rollcage and my Vortex range finder, co-witnessed to the scope. Red Dot for quick-aim and the Kestrel Elite 5700 Weather and Ballistics calculator. The scope is mounted to a Manfrotto 410 geared head with pan, tilt and elevation on top of a Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber 65" tripod. Makes for a solid sturdy set-up and I like the M151 which has a 30 mil vertical reticle for watching and calling trace. Also, the Carbon Fiber tripod vibrates less than an aluminum one after a shot as you are sitting behind a shooter. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

That is a beautiful rifle, suppose if in bad shape, and you are going to use it why not. My BiL took a antique rifle of his grandfather ( but not owned by him) and had the barrel reblued and stock finished. Heard my FiL flipped the fk out. On the other hand my FiL brought back from war a P-38 and had it chrome finish destroying its worth.

Local shop/range has been limiting people to 10 in the store, due to the dread pox. Also so they can keep a handle on who's there and whether they have the first clue what they're doing. Apparently they've been shutting down a lot of straw purchases that go like: "Glock 21 Gen 4, please." *sets Colt Gold Cup on counter* "There you go." "Looks good, I'll take it." "The hell you will." There's already been one ND in the parking lot. Posted by: hogmartin at June 07, 2020 07:09 PM (t+qrx) 16

Hi Horde,
Long time lurker, second time poster. Long time pistol shooter, zero time rifle shooter. I'm looking for suggestions for AR-15 style weapon. I'll also be getting training on whatever weapon I buy, as I'm not familiar with long guns of any sort. I'd like to stay under $1000 if possible. I see AR-15s use the 5.56 NATO round, so the ammo should be easy to obtain. Perhaps there are good rifles that don't break the bank, but will deter antifa types. What's the Horde's wisdom? Helped my friend and his wife purchase their first handguns. ( it was the wife's request) . Ended up getting her the S&W 9mm Shield EZ and him the Glock 19 ( on back order, everyone is out as they shut down their factory) . The EZ was named so because it was designed to be easy to rack the slide and load the mags. Obviously marketed to the beginning female demographic. Shoots very nice.
On another note , after the 'destroy Hi Point ' vid I decided to break out my .45 Hi Point anvil and shoot it along with my Glock 21. Surprisingly the grouping at 7 yards was as tight as the 21. Not bad for a disposable $199 gun ( at the time) . Posted by: Kilroy wasn't here at June 07, 2020 07:14 PM (2DOZq) 28

When I was getting my Ruger SR22 from Sportsman's Warehouse back in late March, I was talking with the gal behind the counter. I asked if they had been getting a lot of first timers and she said yep. When I asked her how many were shocked that they had to wait for the background checks to come back before the could pick up the gun, she said "All of them." Most of them figured they could just walk in, buy a gun, and walk out. But that's also what the MFM has told them for the last two decades.
By late March, CO had a backlog of 14,000 4473's to go through. It took mine a week, usually a 30 minute thing. Posted by: Old Blue at June 07, 2020 07:15 PM (VNmG1) 31

Posted by: Moron Robbie - Shouldn't we say cops are mostly peaceful? at June 07, 2020 07:11 PM (UwWe5) I wish they hadn't closed the MI CPL loophole. We used to be exempt from NICS checks with a carry permit, but there was an ATF letter in March that did away with that. Some vague statement alluding to CPL holders who would not have passed NICS checks (was the state not properly doing background checks for CPL? I have no idea) and another about how MI allows recreational weed but it's still illegal federally. Posted by: hogmartin at June 07, 2020 07:16 PM (t+qrx) 33

I wish they hadn't closed the MI CPL loophole. We used to be exempt from NICS checks with a carry permit, but there was an ATF letter in March that did away with that. Range report, it's been too long between winter, road closed, area shut down and Flu Manchu but...
I suck. Took my S&W 457 out. Took my five magazines to get my desired results. 7 rounds center mass at 10 yards. Once I had three magazines in that bag I figured I sucked less. Practice and ammo. Ammo availability report. I went to Post Falls, ID with a friend Friday. Stopped at Cabela's there, which is open. The closest one to me in Central WA is drive up pick up only still. They had a few boxes of .22 LR. some 9 MM and very little else although shotgun ammo was still well stocked. Every common pistol round and except for .500 is gone. Every rifle round below .464 is gone. They're selling it as it hits teh shelves. Posted by: Winston, dreg of society at June 07, 2020 07:19 PM (d9Irc) 38

Posted by: Numbuh Two, 2x4 Technology Operative at June 07, 2020 07:14 PM (YWBlw) I think the S&W M&P 15 would fit the bill here. Its around $600 MSRP, which leaves you a decent bit for ammo, mags, sling, and other accoutrements. It's ready to go out of the box, with a fixed front post and a Magpul flip-up rear sight (in the configurations I've seen), so you can add a mount and optics later but you aren't starting with a completely slick flattop with no iron sights. You can get nicer and you can get cheaper, but that looks like the sweet spot for entry level, and you don't have to get into the Gun Legos hobby to get one. How about you all? Do you have a spacious, clean and organized place for your gun hobby, or are you a mess like me?
I wouldn't call it spacious, but I've made myself a 4'x8' desk out of a 1" thick hardwood sheet of plywood. I used decorative 4x4 fence posts turned purty side down for the legs and i cut the length of the legs to my comfortable working height. Sanded the top and painted it gawd awful purple so I could see my blued pistol parts better. It's also easier to see itty bitty electronic parts too. I keep a hobby mat handy for setting parts on that I don't want to run away. My cleaning supplies are on a shelf right above my work space. PC and good speakers for tunes are off to the side. This is my man cave, and it's one of the five bedrooms in the house so its mine-all-mine. Custom built the closet out to be my arms room. Shelves for ammo, shelves for pistols, rack for long guns is planned, but not finished. I even have a single bed in there for when I've pissed off Smash so that I have a place to sleep. Dad brought back a Japanese Arisaka type 99 back from Okinawa. It was stored in a wooden crate for years in the basement as us kids grew up.
He picked it up in a cave that had been blasted by his tank earlier. So it wasn't in the best condition. It still had the chrysanthemum over the breach. Dad eventually let me handle it and agreed to let me clean it up because of battle damage and no care for 30+ years. It cleaned up well and blued plus resanded the wood and used linseed oil as the stain. Turned out gorgeous but I kind of wished I left as is since it was a historical piece of equipment. Semi gun related, as mine are currently loaded and sitting within reach.
Last night, just after dark, there was suddenly a number of cars and motorcycles running all over my little town. There were a lot of Fireworks being thrown from cars, and early on what sounded like gunshots (yes, I know the difference. Music being loudly played? Rap. Went on for about 3 hours, and at times they were within 1/2 block of my house. Not a Police siren Heard during those hours. Then right about 11, I heard an argument going on, yelling at the tops of their lungs. The last thing I heard, was 'get the F$#K out of here N%g#rs'. Everything got really quiet after that. Cars quietly left. Note, my little town is in Central Calif, about 1 hour from Stockton, 2 hours from the Bay Area. It is 65% Hispanic. Remington sold 1917s they had after the war, as Model 30S with cutdown stocks and shortened barrels. Highly desirable for custom rifles in magnum calibers because the actions are so strong. I restored my 30S to a classic 1930s configuration big game rifle.

Speaking of the Model 1917. I checked the remington serial numbers. Mine was made in 1918. It's in as issued condition except for the rear sight. A previous owner replaced it with a peep sight adjustable for windage and elevation. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet but it should help with my aging eyes. We'll find out.
BTW, I did a good cleaning of it today. Just doing gun maintenance is soothing. While the bore is not like a mirror, it is on the shiney side and the rifling is sharp. A few passes with Hoppe's made a big difference. Also, I tried the TW25B greaseon the bolt as Weasel mentioned last week. What a difference! That bolt slides many times easier than before the lube. Can't wait to see how it does with lever actions and on the arbor of cap and ball revolvers. That lube ain't cheap but it really works. Posted by: JTB at June 07, 2020 07:28 PM (7EjX1) 68

When a lot of surplus rifles were sporterized, they were just old cheap used rifles. Somewhere I have a gen-u-wine NRA booklet on sporterizing Springfields. I know my dad did a bunch when he was a part time gunsmith as a young man in the late 50s- early 60s. My brother has his 03A3 which is quite nice. I have his savage 44 1/2, but that is not exactly sporterized. Interesting week here in the city. Fortunately the rioters avoided my block... They did a lot of damage around DC though... I live in a small English Basement Apartment here. I am thinking about building a shed so I have space for a drill press and mini mill, and a reloading bench. Shh!! Not popular here I am sure. How many of you saw the picture of the Secret Service Sniper here at AOSHQ earlier in the week. I could see he had about a 26" Stainless Steel barrel, and a suppressor. It appeared to be an AR Pattern, bolt action, rifle with what looked like a Night Force scope on it. My guess was either a .308 or a 6.5 Creedmore from the size of the ejector port. Any one else have more information on what he had?

Oh, maintenance note: I've been having some trouble with my slide not locking back on my 1911's after the last round is expended.
Not a big deal, as these are practice magazines for IDPA. (my 1911's have been so reliable, I have to create malfunctions so I can practice a malfunction drill) Finally, though, I decided it was time to fix the problem and ordered new magazine springs and followers for the magazines. I'm pretty sure it's the springs and followers as the problem is occurring on both the Sig and Kimber 1911 and both 1911's have been thoroughly cleaned)
Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing 81
Finally, this week I did a little shooting with my brand-new Sig P365. Worst groups I've ever shot. Every time I go shooting, I get a little worse.
The slide didn't return all the way a couple of times, but my shooting buddy (who used to be an instructor) said he didn't detect any limp-wristing. So I guess I need more practice to see if it's me or the gun. Posted by: Emmie at June 07, 2020 07:33 PM (clsJu) 82
Thanks as always, Weasel.
RE: Glasses. I need them but . . . I can't see my front sight with my regular glasses on. Fortunately, I have an optometrist who made a pair of safety glasses with normal correction on the left but only astigmatism correction on the right (dominant) eye. Makes a world of difference being able to see that way. I can see well enough to put six rounds into a softball size target @25 yards. I can't use this set up for work though - I need true binocular vision for the job. Range time today was rifle work. Decided I hate my bipod (it was a cheapy) so I picked up a Magpul to try. If that doesn't work, I'll go to an Atlas. Picking up a little handgun work on Wednesdays as I teach a nephew the basics. Last week was single hand drills, dominant and weak, at seven yards. The standard andswer is store it in the never-to-be-found cool and dry place. However, I've shot ammo that sat in my garage for over 20 years, with all the heat, cold and humidity you could imagine. It shot just fine. I've fired surplus ammo over 50 years old that still did the job. Posted by: JTB at June 07, 2020 07:37 PM (7EjX1) 91

Customary range day, expanded a bit, to a magazine / cylinder through just about every pistol in the Chateau - plus the AR and the Henry Survival .22
All functioned 100%, yay, kept the steel plate busy ! A high&right .44mag round from the 629 broke the bolt holding the chain, so a quick repair was required. With summer I am going back to the bellyband for general carry. Have to wear it fairly high, so itslows my draw a bit while I hoist my shirt clear. Looking forward to being able to wear a belt again and go back to my OWB holsters. Thinking about one of those cheap Feyachi red-dot sights for the AR, the iron sights are getting pesky hard to see in adverse lighting. High performance defensive ammo is in short supply around here, all I could find was .357 and .32 Bought some FMJ just to keep the numbers up in the safe. I currently have to protect my work bench as I prefer not to get oil and gun gunk on it, as I prefer not to get that residue on anything I might be doing with wood.

I'm going to give you my own crazy take on triggers. I think they only matter psychologically. Why? Because the only time you can feel a trigger is when you are dry firing. If you have a live round in the chamber the flash - bang reaches your brain through your eyes and ears before the nerve impulse of what the trigger felt like can travel up your arm. That flash - bang is so much more powerful than a precision trigger sensation that the trigger literally gets lost in the noise of what is going on.

Anyone with a Kel-Tec PMR 30 wanting to improve reliability should check out MCARBO. They have an all in one upgrade kit that improves the PMR 30 to a reliable high performance pistol worthy of concealed carry. I just finished my pistol and it was an easy hour project that anyone can do. They have an instructional video that lays it all out. I dumped three thirty round magazines through mine as fast as possible without one failure. Before the upgrade I rarely ever got through a magazine without a failure to feed.

For our readers in Washington state, if you don't have a CPL yet, I have some good news!
The John Brown Gun Club (JBGC) will give you a grant to cover the costs. I hear you thinking "Wow, Duncanthrax, that's sounds incredible! But who is the JBGC?" Basically, they're the "armed" wing of Antifa. "Antifa???", you think. Indeed. Here's the blurb from their website: "If you're a member of a marginalized group, we'll even help you towards getting a concealed pistol license! Here's a grant application for those in marginalized groups who wish to get a concealed pistol license in the state of Washington. https://tinyurl.com/PSJBGC-CPL" "But Duncanthrax, I'm not marginalized!" Seriously? You're conservative, a regular reader of this blog, on this particular thread, and you're not marginalized? All I can say is "It's their money. Use it when you want to." If you have a live round in the chamber the flash - bang reaches your brain through your eyes and ears before the nerve impulse of what the trigger felt like can travel up your arm. That flash - bang is so much more powerful than a precision trigger sensation that the trigger literally gets lost in the noise of what is going on.
Posted by: An Observation at June 07, 2020 07:43 PM (0l/6b) ---------- If you grab a Glock and then a 1911 and then a revolver, I guarantee you'll be able to tell the difference between the triggers.

I do have a good strong bench that can take any stress or torque from reloading presses with room for components being used at the moment. Unfortunately, I can't get within several feet of it due to all the crap in the garage. So I'm reduced to a press tripod sold by Lee (it works quite well) for reloading. The rest all happens on the dining room table. Fortunately, Mrs. JTB likes the aroma of Hoppe's.

Normal safety precautions of course but beyond that, we never tried to "hide" the guns from the kids. They were told early and often that they were never to touch the guns without a parent there* but if they ever wanted to see or handle them, all they had to do was ask and I would drop whatever I was doing and show them any of the guns in a safe setting. When they were old enough (7 or 8-ish) I would make it a point to invite them along on every trip to the range. As of now, both in their mid-20s, neither is particularly interested in guns or shooting as an activity but maybe they'll come back around to it.

OO, Slug, other esoteric rounds. I've tested it with all of them. Do have to be careful not to short stroke it, tho.

Ola ca va? Still cleaning out the gun room trying to massage 10 lbs of crap into a 3 lb bag, ie fit all my crap still left in the room which will be the walk in gun safe, out and into the workshop/man cave which is full of transit cases, ammo lockers, mills, lathes, motersicles, reloading and cleaning benches, etc, etc. One good thing was as I was cleaning off the top of one locker was the discovery of all my WWI pistol leather holsters , Webley, Luger, Smith and Wesson, etc. As I thought they needed a bit of leather cleaning I set to. One was a highly modified British Webley issue holster with a cleaning rod in place and I thought that's been used by a pro. A very useful holster for the trenches, so as I was cleaning it, under the flap was the rank, name and unit of the WW1 owner. The magic letters NZMGC. I will let you guess what that means, but to me its effing priceless as I identify with it. I did not realise that, the info was hidden there. Going to do some more research on the owner and dig out the pistol to more closely check it out, but that will go amoungst pride of place when the gun room is finally finished. Finally some good news.

InCali,
In regards to your questions about gun storage and small children there are several solutions. The safest place for your pistol is on your person in a holster when you have small children in the house, or teenagers for that matter. Otherwise, you need to keep it in an accessable safe. There are numerous safe companies that make thumbprint release safe, and their is a new one made for access in your bed/mattress. Do not, and I mean, do not assume small children or any kids will be safe to leave a pistol in drawer or unlocked cabinet. Every year hundreds of kids are killed by playing with a gun they found or one they knew about and are showing their friends. ome 54R "yellow tip", also called heavy ball, ammo, Soviet surplus. Basically a 182g projectile vs. 147/9g projectile.
That was used as PM1910 Maxim "light" ammo as the original issue load was 207gn. The heavier projectile gives enough recoil impulse on the face of the barrel to cycle. As the Russians improved on the WWI issue guns, by WWII they found that they could use 182gn and still have the gun function, due mostly going away from cloth to metallic belts. The kit I bought was for the "M4" version - that is the carbine version of the M-16 (but semi-auto only) I carried in Germany and Bosnia. The kit contains a completed upper and all of the lower parts. I bought their "Virginia-15" stripped lower. 410 407 Some day when I finally get around to building my first Evil Black Rifle, the trigger will be an issue. My first inclination is to get the cheapest *good* trigger I can - meaning reasonably decent trigger, as compared to rock-bottom stock kind. The overall objective is a simple quality AR for short-range work at least cost, so initial idea is to put most $$ into trigger and barrel. Don't plan to have any glass on it at all, just irons.
Posted by: rhomboid at June 07, 2020 09:10 PM (El6T/) I like Rise Armament triggers a lot, cheap, reliable and down to 2.5 pounds , which is light for an AR. Posted by: NZFrank with a M2 at June 07, 2020 09:16 PM (bgJ0E) 430

NZFrank, no optics mostly because, just for shorter range work ("work" meaning fun, there's zero chance I'll use this hardware for anything else), and so far eyes are fine. I own no optics of any kind. Don't hunt, and so far long-range or precision aren't part of the hobby for me.
I am able to hit plates at 200 yds with crap Soviet surplus ammo out of a Mosin with zero "accurizing" work on it using just the original irons, when I'm shooting well. AH Lloyd reminded me, thathalfrican, and other Gun Morons - something I've preached here forever - don't overlook the used/2nd-hand market for gunz.
I think it might rival the new/barely used car market for value improvement. As in, drive the new car off the lot, it instantly loses X% of value, yet is still basically the same. I only own 2 guns that I bought new, of all the (redacted) that I own. Of course the rifles, being mostly military surplus, one approaching 100 years old (one of the Mosin-Nagants), are not new. But even my Mossberg 500 and the M1 Carbine reproduction are 2nd hand (both tremendous values, esp. the carbine) - saved lots of money. Anyway, a lot depends on where you live, because of the market size and depth. But gun shoppers, carefully consider the used market, if value and cost are issues. Funny thing, a gallon ziploc bag is a really useful gunsmithing tool. Any time you're working with a small spring under pressure, do it with the piece inside the bag. When, not if, you launch the spring... it'll keep you from spending all afternoon rooting through the carpet before giving up and ordering another from Brownells, waiting a week and launching that one, ordering a third from Brownells, and installing that one successfully, then finding the original spring 6 months later when you're walking around the living room barefoot and having it stab you in the web of your toe. Not gonna get into the topic too much, but the '68 (and just before/just after) riots were about a lot more than Vietnam - I'd say the ones we are thinking of (urban, actual riots) had little to do with that, and much to do with other things. There were other disturbances directly linked to "anti-war" sentiment, but I don't think DC's business district or Newark or Detroit and the like were anti-war things.

On revolvers, there are Smith and Wessons, Rugers, and Colts.
Smiths can have some issues, production quality slipped during the Bangor Punta era and apparently some of their current revolvers are showing some issues. Rugers, generally fine beasts of revolvers if not abused, Colts, pre 1968, be careful as the old double action of a Colt was handfitted and did not take abuse well--Colt gunsmiths are few and far between nowadays. Post 1968, the more modern actions are okay but parts are scarce. The new Colts are fine. Usually not so obvious problems on revolvers are bent cranes, out of timing, or botched trigger jobs. I have them all (Colts, Rugers, and Smiths in revolvers and a few others besides) and like them but if starting today as a new gun buyer, I would frankly buy a Glock 19 if I could afford only one gun. Felt it was fake.
Posted by: Robert at June 07, 2020 09:35 PM (siRtV) Not fake. Alas, they arrested him. It was in McAllen. Rocks ain't very dangerous until you knapp them into arrowheads or axes. And strap them to handles.

I know it's already willowed, but...
launched springs and detents. Posted by: ck at June 07, 2020 09:19 PM (Gf0Po) I haven't gone through my video, yet, but the only spring I almost lost was the buffer retaining doohickey. I took the buffer back out and let go of the pin and peeyow! off it went. I turned off the video and spent 10 minutes looking for it - it was in the box lid. Perspectives will change...
The merciless cruel looters-rioters all burn down their society and fellow men, then the violence will subside and the same people will bawl their eyes out to have to live in the very areas they plundered and burned. If you don't like drinking polluted water, don't piss in the well you drink from. If only rebels had that much intelligence, eh? Posted by: ron n. at June 08, 2020 12:13 AM (om5HK) 568
democrats are the biggest forces to encourage Americans to arm themselves. Except democrats want us to disarm and trust the police to defend/protect us. The very same police the democrats want to eliminate. Socialism agendas drive democrats insane, and this is proof !
Why should Mexican drug lords be supplied with weapons, and law abiding Americas be disarmed ? George Soros utilizes useful fools ! Posted by: ron n. at June 08, 2020 12:18 AM (om5HK) 569
irongrampa....like you, I love black powder, and have gone as far as to use black powder revolvers for home defense....third , or fourth tier, but there, none the less. A couple of weeks ago, I took out a chopped .44 Remington copy I had very carefully loaded six months prior. Six out of six downrange, no issues. It killed men 100 plus years ago, it can kill them today.....Jasonj......
