SpaceX Launch! We Can Still Do It!

It's gratifying to see an American launch. Yes, that is patriotic and nationalistic and jingoistic and probably racist and sexist and age-ist and whatever pejoratives we have become inured to...

And open thread, because you are going to talk about the rioting anyway...

Below the fold is a live feed of the ISS (not sure how long that will last).

18 It is nice seeing a private company put someone in space, that truly is a huge, monumentally important step forward in space exploration. But the problem is, space isn't really exciting any more. It used to be, even into the 80s with the shuttle. People loved to turn on the TV and watch the launch.

Now people just do not care too much any more, its a sort of "that's kinda cool" then they look down at their phones again.

23 Well, it's pouring buckets here in Galveston, and that's moving up into the Greater Houston area, too.

Won't be any riots in this downpour.

Hope y'all get to see some video of the Houston P.D. corralling, shutting down and shunting away would-be rioters, yesterday afternoon.

The HPD had their moves down cold. Well rehearsed, well practiced and always, a couple steps ahead of the riotards.

Houston's Mayor and Chief did the only right thing they could've done, and it worked.

The let the Police Department DO it's Police Department thing.

And now, Houston can enjoy it's well deserved part in the Space-X success.

A man, far away, was collecting rocks while walking on the moon in a glorious triumph of technology and human spirit, while another man, far away, was collecting rocks to stone a woman to death for being raped by her uncle.

I've looked for it before but internet search engines suck now. It was in the style of Bill Whittle. Anybody recall this?

Hell, where do all the people with their heads buried in their cell phones think their ability to use a cell phone comes from... the space program putting satellites in space.

Ironically, one could say the space program is partially responsible for the riots, as they don't happen if we don't have the ability to record and post video with our cell phones thanks to the satellites currently in space and the technology developed in the space program.

Inventions we use every day that were actually created for space exploration

188 To me the only legit criticism of Musk is that he's awfully fond of lapping up government cash.

Yeah, he's not exactly the first aerospace contractor who's been fond of that.

Ironically enough, ego or not, Musk is rather down to Earth.

It's probably true that most people who are old enough have a fond memory of companies like Grumman and McDonnell-Douglas. Everyone knows they did what they did out of the goodness of their hearts, and sweet sweet government cash.

But mostly government cash.

214 Indulge me a sec:

I was personally very excited to see the launch, though i had to see it after the fact. I told my kids the importance of having the USA send astronauts into space instead of hitching rides on old soviet rockets. I got their attention for about 10 seconds before they went back to their minecraft game.
I then showed them clips of the Space Shuttle launches and the Saturn 5. That got them a little more excited. Finally my young son says, "It'd be cool to be an astronaut!"
It's little moments like these that give me hope, because everything online is vying for my kids' limited attention span.

It made me remember when my dad had me watch the first shuttle launch with him back when Columbia took flight in the early 80s. Wanted to be an astronaut from that point forward.
Of course, that didn't happen, but if NASA wants a 43 year old dude who can shoot really well and has a minor dad bod, I'm all in.
And if not me, maybe my kid one day?
Anyway, long tangent. Glad we made sent guys back up into the next frontier.

How much money does G "Too Big to Fail" M get from the federal government?

How much does Ford get each year to sell vehicles to the government?

If we're going to use the word "grift" to describe companies that get government cash, then everyone is grifting.

I don't think there's anything Musk does to single himself out, other than being a recognizable personality, whereas the grifters in Ford, GM and so many other "American" companies are nameless and faceless.

"By the 2025 model year, automakers that sell vehicles in California will have to make 15.4 percent of them ZEV....
The "ZEV regions" are California, Connecticut, D.C., Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont. Because they account for nearly a third of the nation's annual new-car sales, they are a force the auto industry cannot ignore...

The ZEV mandate was designed to work with federal fuel-efficiency rules so automakers wouldn't have conflicting regulations to deal with. The federal rules, called the National Plan..."

And if you haven't check out some of the ugliest, violent clips on the web of black rioters beating people and destroying property, but don't if you need to preserve your all-is-well fantasy that degradation and hallucinogenic racism in much of the black community aren't 99% of the problem.

Sure seems that way to me. He had an opportunity, and he took it. At the very least it seems to have been awfully personal.

Floyd is not the reason for the riots. But he's now the excuse.

There wasn't even any reason for protests. EVERYONE but a few extremely hateful people was angry and demanded justice. What are they hoping to accomplish with protests? The guy was immediately punished by the police and was eventually arrested and jailed in just a few days.

You protest when nothing is being done and you demand action. That was not happening here.

452 Protesters peacefully protesting last night in Dallas peacefully smashed the windows of a local vape shop and a local coffee shop right across the street from my building. Then they peacefully entered our parking garage and peacefully beat the shit out of someone. One actually got in the building lobby, but was quickly met with armed civilian resistance. He left 30 seconds later, after peacefully breaking some shit.

It doesn't. I mean I get why they rousted him pretty hard, he was a felon for violent crime and on parole. But that does not explain why they had a pacified and restrained man who showed zero signs of resistance on the ground and why that cop had his knee on the man's neck, against training in ever police force I know of. It doesn't explain why the other cops did nothing to stop it and just kept people away so they couldn't help out the man.

Women will gladly let you do it once week, in fact they'll ask you for it

You can do it in the morning, even if you haven't brushed your teeth yet

If it lasts for more than four hours, you do not have to see a doctor

They don't have to be, but unlike hopeful TV portrayals, its not safe or smart to question or doubt your partner or fellow cops on the job in front of others. It encourages the crowd to join in, it shows weakness, it hurts solidarity, etc. They don't have to be in on anything other than wearing a badge and feeling part of a put-upon group in a dangerous situation.

That's no excuse, of course, but it does explain the psychology of why they would tend to worry more about the crowd than what their fellow officer is doing.

But that didn't stop many people (to this day) from saying it was Bush, it was an inside job, and, of course, the Jews.

As frustrating as it is, the fascist terrorist wing of the Democrat party, "antifa," can do whatever it wants and they won't be blamed for it. Indeed, we'll be blamed. Israel will be blamed. The president will be blamed. Fake News controls The Narrative. That's the way it is.

Rioters took to the street in Richmond the last two nights too. They
shot a guy, burned a city bus and tried to burn the Daughters of the
Confederacy building and an apartment building. They broke into a bank
and looted a Boost mobile store. Set fires up and down Broad St, tried
to destroy a police station and attacked Capital Square. Not to mention
all the windows they smashed.

The Left can't sell their ideas, because their ideas suck and are extremely divisive. So they have two other pillars in their strategy:
- Defame and personally destroy their opponents
- Terrorize and exhaust the public

Trump has shown how to fight the first pillar. They're ramping up the second, after getting *years* of good, consequence-free practice in places like Portland.

605 I have been a martial arts instructor for more than 30 years. Its time I cleared up what happened in the Floyd case. What the cop was doing is a carotid sinus choke. It does not cut off the blood to the brain. What it does, is trick the brain into thinking the blood pressure has suddenly spiked - the brain slows down the heart in an attempt to reduce the blood pressure. Because the blood pressure is not actually high the brain passes out because of the decreased blood supply from the slowed down heart. If you keep the choke on for minutes - as was done here - the heart can slow down so much that it loses its ability to beat regularly, and the person dies.
Having experienced this choke it does feel like you can't breathe.

626 Do any of you gun nuts know if there is a reliable semi-auto shotgun? I think it could come in handy.

***
Just bought my son a Remington 1100 competition for Christmas. It cost $1,079 and is pretty heavy. I don't know how much the non-comp model costs. I prefer my Mossberg 500 pump. It cost me $329 about 4 years ago. Both guns hold 6 shells. They make a Mossberg 500 tactical/home defense model that holds 12 I think? Having your barrel weighted down with those extra shells can affect your aim though.
I shoot with a bunch of guys who have Remmington 870s and they are good guns too. They all like the location of the my 500's action release and the safety. The load gate on the 870 is a bit of a finger pincher too.

I think the reason they still sell pumps is that you can reload them really quick.

628 I have been a martial arts instructor for more than
30 years. Its time I cleared up what happened in the Floyd case. What
the cop was doing is a carotid sinus choke. It does not cut off the
blood to the brain. What it does, is trick the brain into thinking the
blood pressure has suddenly spiked - the brain slows down the heart in
an attempt to reduce the blood pressure. Because the blood pressure is
not actually high the brain passes out because of the decreased blood
supply from the slowed down heart. If you keep the choke on for minutes -
as was done here - the heart can slow down so much that it loses its
ability to beat regularly, and the person dies.
Having experienced this choke it does feel like you can't breathe.

Posted by: An Observation at May 31, 2020 02:08 PM (+u6Jp)

I figured it was either his carotid arteries or his carotid sinus that were being constricted. Thus the strangulation that causes heart symptoms rather than asphyxia.

Antifa *way* predates Occupy Wall St. Antifa were the internationalist commies fighting the nationalist commies in Europe before WWII. It has survived since then, and the goal hasn't changed: install international communism.

As for when our hoodlums took up the banner, and why, and how much the international group is actually involved, I don't know. But the tactics, the uniform they wear, the active collaboration with friendly local political leaders, the shows-of-force, the subversion, all of it are on-message and consistent with Antifa in Europe.

The Antifa gangsters are huge problem and very powerful in W. Europe, and are working on replicating that here. If it works, everywhere becomes Portland.

The way I saw it put here is that Antifa sends in the "shepherds" to rile up and unleash the local "sheep." They fly and bus in the organizers and shot-callers, local coordinators, people to post bail and run ad-hoc cells when they pop off, and then use the locals for manpower.

No one looting is from out of town - too hard to move the goods. But the people calling the shots are probably being brought in to coordinate and lead.

I think it's very important to identify who is coordinating this, because the chances that they have direct ties to the DNC, to the coup plotter is probably pretty high.

Hey, maybe we should also see if the Soros-funded AGs and DAs in these blue cities/states are funded by the same people/organizations that fund Antifa?

Maybe that would explain why some of these cities and states have been so slow in responding, or even helpful by ordering police stations under attack to retreat.

Counterfeit bills account for approximately 1 out of every $10,000 in the money supply. Counterfeit $20s are the most prevalent denomination. Law of averages says most adults have had a bogus 20 pass through their hands. Assuming that Floyd did pass on a bogus 20, there is no evidence that it would have been a crime since he likely would not have known that it was bogus.

708 @Deplorable Jay, I'm with Braenyard on this one. This is a well-coordinated organization that gave marching orders in accordance with an existing plan. The timing may have been planned for later in the summer, but these guys were executing a plan, not just making it up.

I agree with you that there can be coordinated action sometimes without a central coordinator. It's called "working towards the Fuehrer." There is no evidence that Hitler was even aware of the Holocaust, but the SS leaders who organized it at the Wannsee Conference believed that they were acting under his authority. Lois Lerner did what she did, probably without any coordination with anyone. I'm familiar with the energy sector, and the Obama Office of the Comptroller of the Currency marked down loans that banks made to oil and gas companies without regard to usual creditworthiness criteria. Was that directed from the White House? Doubtful that the WH was even aware, but I have no doubt that the bank regulators thought they were acting in accordance with the President's wishes.

These Antifa strikes were just too well-organized to be spontaneous, though.

720 Stage Coaches:

Stage coaches are heavy and when moving over unpaved roads, can form ruts in the mud.

Next coach driver comes along, and he knows that if he follows unbroken ruts left by the first guy, he probably will be safe from pots holes that might break an axle; but, his coach is heavy and he presses the rut a little deeper.

Time goes on. And the ruts are so deep that you will break an axle trying to jump out of one, so they tell new stage coach drivers "Choose your ruts carefully because you'll be in them for many a mile."

If George Floyd had directed his life away from drugs (the toxicology report) and crime (the money laundering) he would have never been caught up in a situation that very often - for people both black and white - spirals completely out of control.

Don't start none, Won't be none, does not just apply to the flashpoint we see at the end. It also applies to each choice we made that got us there.

Did George Floyd deserve to die? Hell no.

Did George Floyd pick an intelligent life path? Hell no, either.

So contrast say with Dr. King. We abhor the assassination of Dr. King because we believe as Americans that we all have a right to speak our mind. {You can point out that there are people who are glad he's dead because they didn't like what he had to say. Not disputing that. And you can point out the killing was not at the hands of the State. Not disputing that either.}

Now am I going to call up the Floyd family and jeer at them, no. I wish it had happened differently. I really do wish that somewhere in the world there was a clue bat 'cause then we could stop people from doing stupid shit! But am I really shook up about it. No.

The Iran Deal was Barack Obama's Moon-Shot.

Rescuing the Mullahs with billions in cash, sanctions-relief funding, bank-laundering,diplomatic recognition, uranium, no verification self-inspection, Russian anti-aircraft weapons to target American pilots and permission to build nuclear ICBMs was the singular reason Obama ran for president in the first place.

And of course, keeping their knee on the neck of the beautiful Iranian people. The Mullahs do to their people what Officer Chauvin did to George Lloyd every day--and Obama helped them do it.

At this point, it looks like the cop moved *well* past the point of responsible policing, and Floyd died. That is, legally, resolvable, even to the culpability of the police department.

The riots are another matter altogether. To use the death of Floyd as a justification for overt, destructive lawlessness is BS.

Your... brother-in-law... should already know that most passing of single counterfeit bills is innocent. They are part of the money stream and pass through everybody's hand.

747 People rioting does not retroactively make what the cops did to Floyd okay.

A single bill in a wallet of other bills, yes.

Usually the people that they grab are the ones that bring a single large denomination to the store manager like a $50 or $100 to break it before they go shopping, since they know the cashiers won't take it.

In the casino, the people will buy chips from different windows at different times but pass $5 or $10s - even $1s - each time.

And yes, these are all pathetically small timers compared to Iran and North Korea, but these are usually the counterfeiters that get caught.

So it doesn't really matter what ruts you choose, shitty cops engaged in shitty police work will kill you anyway. And there will always be someone ready to stand up and say,"well, if he hadn't done that thing they wouldn't have had to kill him."

750 Floyd didn't deserve to die. That doesn't make him a good man - from his record, he likely wasn't. But if we had a license to kill all the bad people, well, to quote Mr. Manson - 'there'd be none of ya left.'
