First-World Problems...Part 1010

squirrel22.jpg

No, they aren't cute. They are terrorists with bushy tails.

They have been digging up my yard this spring with tremendous vigor, and I have had just about enough. Some of you know the lengths to which I will go to end the squirrels' domination of the suburban landscape. I will take no prisoners. I will play for keeps.

24 We have chipmunks. They have burrowed under the air conditioning units and and under the whole house generator (this one at least has a huge concrete pad, so it isn't unstable or sinking). They are cute as a button, but destructive little F^%$@#.

We bought a couple of havahart traps last year and we were trapping them and then releasing them a few miles away in a wooden area. That ended abruptly the night we caught a skunk instead of a chipmunk.

The next day the exterminator came over to put the poison down the holes (they lick it off their fur and bleed out). It got rid of some, but they were back again this year. So, trying again with the poison.

36 Although I am no fan of terriers, a rat terrier would be an interesting deterrent to squirrels. Our bullmastiff can almost catch them, but he has to wear a muzzle in the yard because he is stupid and eats rocks.

Without the muzzle, I think the squirrels would really be in trouble. He gets tufts of hair with it on.

48 This is good. Our dog, doing what dogs do, caught a small squirrel b/c it was under the snow. The dog dug it out and shook it by the neck. My wife freaked out, screamed at the dog.

There is more. The squirrel was not moving so my wife DEMANDED that i put it in the (cloth) dog crate and bring it inside. Sometime, during the night the squirrel clawed its way through the cage and now owned the house. The musky smell gave it away. Well, my wife freaked out again, chaos ensued. Bottom line, we used the dog to find and flush the squirrel out through an open door. In winter.

We have chipmunks and a garden. They never ate our tomatoes squash or green beans, but they enjoyed our sunflowers. We had the giant ones to save seeds, but got none between them and the goldfinches.

Maybe plant some sunflowers near the garden to entice them away? Upside is a draw for pollinators.

If there was a known isis or al-qaida supporter they would be arrested so will this be any different? Will their communications be monitored and allowed to exist so they can be used to track them and arrest them?

Can I hold antifa members at gun point legally until police take them into custody?

68 Our dog used to chase away the squirrels and chipmunks. He caught a chipmunk once and that thing went flying. My dog was sick at that point in time, but could move quickly when highly motivated.

Oddly enough, he and the rabbits seemed to have some sort of truce. He'd let them stay at the border of the yard as long as they didn't venture in too far. The second they came in past a certain point, BAM! he was after them.

While it does not make me want to get another dog, he certainly did keep the rodents under control.

101 Tree rats are annoying pests and freeloaders who regard every bird feeder ever made as a Skinner Box supreme. My folks have had some pretty smart squirrels in their little copse, and it took a while for Dad to get bird feeders what could reliably prevent squirrel access.

Currently the real problem for them is a chipmunk colony which is using the anti-deer fence as shelter, and doing strange and destructive things to the hillside drainage system. One of their neighbors just discovered a fox den under a shed though, so maybe a fox or two will stop by and get some chipmunks. (Foxes have no interest in songbirds, so Dad will do nothing about visiting foxes.)

Well, that would certainly be clarifying, huh?
Out them. Get them on record so they can own all of it, everything Antifa has been doing for years.

This was an established activist-DNC operation. Nothing spontaneous about it. They've been agitating for a race war or class war (whichever works, right?) for decades.

Whatever happened to Floyd is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things - they just needed a dead body to get this thing kicked off.

153 I've been managing the squirrel menace over here for years. Started with a blowgun(discrete, but range only 20 ft.), then went to a pump airgun. Best iteration of all is a hammerli 850 air magnum in .22 with a 'compensator' for quietness. Its a bolt action that has an eight shot rotary magazine and a pretty nice crisp trigger. On top is a Bushnell red dot sight which is great for my aging eyes. We have lots of trees so there's plenty of "backstop"(important!), and I never take an unsafe shot. The driveway surface isn't a good backstop, for instance.
.177 is also effective on squirrel.
Anyhoo, I've shot thousands of squirrels and rarely miss, and that's my 2 cents.

For life saving purposes, or;

On a subject who is exhibiting active resistance in order to gain control of the subject; and if lesser attempts at control have been or would likely be ineffective.

Neck restraints shall not be used against subjects who are passively resisting as defined by policy. (04/16/12)

181 I've already executed one this month, it thought it was safe screaming at me on the wall under the eves of my house 20 feet up. I have to admit to some satisfaction when it realized it was dead, and especially when its little partner let out it's scream of terror/woe.

They've done thousands of dollars in damage to my properties over the years. The house I'm in now they've chewed their way into the attic several times, at which point they eat the wiring, tear up the insulation and breed like fruit flies. Unfortunately, my idiot tenants before I came back didn't notice them romping and playing and running around in the house (Dave's not here...) so I had to repair the roof and the ceiling after the roof leaked all last winter.

At my old place squirrels literally ate a hole down the center of a 60 year old palm tree to nest, killing it. That's not even what they do to my vegetable garden.

Oh, I did the animal abatement thing. They're too damn smart to get caught - save the juviniles. In CA, the crappy animals fall under fish and game. So, it's illegal to hurt the po widdwe tings. They have to get captured and released at between $100-150 a pop. So, I spend hundreds trying to trap them, and then still have to get the house repaired.

So, it's me, my lawn chair, a six pack and my trembling Webley. I'll start baiting if I need to. As soon as I let my guard down, they'll be back in, especially this fall.

At my old place when we had a massive vegetable garden, the little bastards would choose the best brandywine tomato at peak ripeness (don't know why, but they always went for the heirlooms first), pull it off, take it on top of the fence, take a bite out of it and leave it there. Soon there'd be a dozen tomatoes lined up on top of the fence, all with one bite. I really, really, really hate squirrels.

Corvettes from the Stingray (didn't see and 62s, but I didn't see it all) to the modern era, likewise Mustangs, VW bugs (original) kitted out like the Road Warrior, VW Microbuses, various Roadsters and Hot Rods, some generic classic cars that I don't know, even a 68 Ford Falcon (never a muscle car) in the exact same color (Gulfstream Aqua) as the one I nearly killed myself in in 1977.

Most waved American flags. Enough had Gadsdens.

Greetings, SBT ... They definitely dig! Every spring we plant annual flowers in clay pots to decorate our front porch. Every fall, when the flowers fade, the squirrels start burying acorns in those pots. Then, throughout every winter, the squirrels visit the porch every couple of days to dig up a snack. Surprisingly, dear hubby tolerates the burying and digging up activities on the porch (because it spares the front lawn). However, he gets royally pissed whenever the squirrels sit on his porch chair, eat their snack, and litter his chair seat with broken nut shells.

We just have wild boar or raccoons these days. A wild boar can look like somebody took a rototiller to your lawn (that's pretty much how it works anyway). The damn raccoons will roll the lawn up looking for grubs. They can destroy an entire backyard in an evening. So, I have to spray for grubs every few months.

Used to have moles when I lived in the hills. Luckily (or not) the soil I've got is all river rock with a little dirt to fill in the crevasses. Never really did find anything that worked except dogs/cats.

My old gardener used to swear that juicy fruit gum was something they couldn't resist. They'd eat it, it would gum up their insides and they die. Never had a chance to really prove it worked.

Check Shawn Woods on Youtube. He's a crossbow hunter, but has a popular series called mousetrap monday. He tests every type of rodent killing/trapping device out there, from modern to antique. He also traps/kills squirrels, gophers and moles. He just did one on moles recently.

No, bushy tailed tree rats. There's ground squirrels here too, but they tend to stay in the open areas. In Santa Clara County CA they're protected. Don't think the same is extended to ground squirrels because of the dangers they pose to cattle and horses. This is a rural(ish) area still, so I'm sure ground squirrels are open season.

Exactly what I have been wondering. A lot of people's livelihoods and property have been destroyed, many of whom are black. There are some really heartbreaking videos out there.

One argument that has been popping up on the left is that this is no big deal - the looted and burned down businesses like Target and McDonalds have insurance. (I kid you not.)

Ignoring that insane argument, how about the many poor and working class people that were employed in those businesses? What's going to happen to them when unemployment is already sky high because of the coronavirus response?

But the celebrities will be spending their money bailing out the ones who caused the destruction. SMH.

422 The judicial lynching of the cop will now be the degrading and revealing second act in this farce. DA probably sweating the cop will have good defense counsel - but salvation is no jury would dare not convict him, however much the case fails to meet the burden (which is quite possible).

So Mpls has promised to pay the ransom - and the hostages were shot anyway.

Like a clowncar, but not the least bit funny, with enormous damage in all directions.

I would appreciate him being given a brick in the face as punishment.

There can be more than one problem.

And it's not "black behavior". Lots of videos out there showing white antifa types destroying, looting, and beating people up.

Before this, they used to terrorize the streets of Portland and other cities.

The problem is leftist agitator behavior. It's what is being excused.

427 Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkin is now live at a press conference, denouncing the racism from all of us that was the real reason for destroying downtown Seattle.

And the Seattle police chief, Carmen Best, the new black police chief, is angry at the murder of George Floyd, and the justice system that continues to create harm to black and brown people.

But before that, Best thanked Mayor Durkin for her leadership. And then bragged that Seattle has more accountability than any other city anywhere.

Where do we go when the leadership has no idea what happened last night? It's like an original Twilight Zone episode.

My area up here is very conducive to large populations of squirrels, chipmunks and other assorted small rodents.

I use a .177 cal pellet rifle with a CO2 cartridge for pest control. Accurate, quiet and lethal. Classic shoot shovel and shut up. It's only employed when the nuisance level is extreme, most times I can tolerate them.

We have no mice (that I've ever seen evidence of) in the house, the resident cat has a lock on that. My Lab is so accustomed to squirrels she seldom acknowledges them unless they wander too near her, then it's a halfhearted chase for a few feet.

There's video of a guy paying young black men to loot.

I am OK with applying the power of "and" to those who are rioting - there are plenty of professional activists with political motives AND stupid, criminal locals just having fun with the opportunity to loot and attack police (like all the times this happens after an NCAA or NB, NFL championship game, etc.). Friend says his old cat got along fine with the squirrels, and the squirrels would act as beaters for the cat, flushing mice out of piles of brush where the cat would pounce and kill them.

The cat didn't like eating mice, so the squirrels would take the dead mouse off.

Semi-Literate: the protest was originally organized by a group active on police choke-hold technique going back several years. There actually was a protest, that was - no joke - "mostly" peaceful .... the blocking of the I-8 should have brought a fierce response and arrests, but of course it didn't. Everything changed around 8PM, including, reportedly, the make-up of the crowd - most of the marchers took off.

The idiots stayed.

My point, which I'll give up because it's clearly hopeless, is that so many here are clinging to their "agitator" excuses and not putting them in context. There are agitators, in some cases they are a significant factor - but pretending that's the real problem is as delusional as the statements coming from officials in Seattle and Mpls.

Your point is that the cops brought this on by their actual behavior, treating the public like dirt? I don't disagree.

It's also true that municipal and state leadership played their part. Police policies that alienate the public are often directed or at least tolerated by ciy councils, mayors and governors.

Baltimore is an example. One generation of political leadership (O'Malley) uses the police for cynical alienating policies to improve their crime numbers. The next generation exploits the public resentment and demonizes the police. When the lid blows such as now, the political will to crack down isn't there -- contradicts the SJW basis for getting into power.

Look at Los Angeles in '65. Blacks were right to be angrier than a nest of hornets. Los Angeles was probably the most racist city in America, they were enforcing segregation even after it was dead in the South, and doing so with a considerable amount of government sanctioned police violence.

According to the coroner, a lot of the reason Floyd died was poor health, and drugs in his system.

Did he need to die? of course not.

Was he taken out and executed? uh, not really.

Looks like the take down added to poor health killed him.

And it sure ain't a good enough reason for all the looting and destruction now going on.

Just IM'd with my brother (south side Chicago police officer). This was his response:

Its rioting and chaos here in the Southside. They've destroyed pretty much every store. But I'm safe at the moment. Working 12hr shifts cancelled days off

We grew up on the south side near Midway Airport. But he had friends who moved out of the city to Tinley Park and Orland Park. We often visited our uncle and cousin who lived in Tinley Park. And went to the Orland Park mall quite a bit.

I really don't understand the point of any protests now. What is their purpose?

The cops were fired and arrested and charged. Now it is a waiting game for evidence to be gathered and then an eventual trial.

But there's no more purpose for a protest, since all the possible steps have been taken to start the process with the justice system.

Everything that has happened after the arrest and charges is now not about George Floyd, but simply about causing chaos.

First they crashed the economy with the Flu Manchu lock downs and now they sitting back watching the city and state burn. I've got a cousin whose husband is an Orland cop. I hope they shut that shit down fast.

Posted by: Romeo13 at May 31, 2020 04:57 PM

Yep, according to this analysis of the charging documents, Floyd was complaining of difficulty breathing even before he was put on the ground.

In addition, he was resisting arrest, throwing himself on the ground to resist, resisting being put in the patrol car, etc.

This also talks about the officer thinking that Floyd may be suffering from excited delirium. They note that the officers almost had him in the patrol car, but then pulled him out and then put him on the ground. And I think it is then that the video captures the rest of the arrest. Will be interesting to find out the reason why the officers decided to stop trying to put him in the car and instead put him on the ground.

https://bit.ly/2MdTmos

According to the charging documents, while the officers were holding Floyd down, now-former Officer Lane asked Chauvin, "should we roll him on his side?"

Chauvin responded, "No, staying put where we got him."

Lane stated, "I am worried about excited delirium or whatever."

Chauvin responded, "That's why we have him on his stomach."

Excited delirium is a life-threatening medical episode where people can react violently. People experiencing excited delirium need to be restrained so that they can get medical attention as soon as possible - not restrained for the sake of being restrained.

Chauvin demonstrated a total lack of reason by continuing to restrain an unresponsive person, but his statements suggest he thought he was reacting appropriately to excited delirium.

He was wrong, but he didn't appear to know he was wrong.

Me, I'm kinda horrified, but at the same time very gratified that now everyone sees the rad left exactly as I have always seen them.

Posted by: Tom Servo at May 31, 2020 05:05 PM

I'm horrified as well. And how convenient that not only can the Left terrorize to their hearts desire, because the majority of people are at home on Governor executive orders and are not being inconvenienced much (i.e. blocked from travelling to or from work or vacations, etc.), but they also get to wear masks to cover their identities.

I hope you are right that people are seeing the Left is doing this. That is probably why the media and Left narrative is to say that this is not local Black communities or antifa, but rather "white supremacists/nationalists" (i.e. "these are Trump supporters!) who are instigating riots.

I hope no one is falling for that nonsense. President Trump was right to get out front and put the focus on antifa and use this to declare them a domestic terrorist organization.

494 So I'm walking to the dorm the marching band shared with the football team for a couple weeks before college started.

Interesting grouping.

Next to the dorm a man-mountain who was a freshman starting center from the sticks has a squirrel all stretched out on a board and is skinning him.

These are the semi-tame squirrels that inhabit the college greens of numerous liberal arts schools in the mid-west.

In a bit of chock I ask,"man, what are you doing?", he says , "I'm skinnin' a squirrel, I can't believe they come right up to you here!!!"

My brother sent me the link to the livestream of the Chicago police scanner last night. Hearing just 20 minutes of that chaos made everything real for me real quick. I can't imagine my brother or your cousin's husband having to deal with that stuff. Scary shit.

The irony is that for the past two months of the COVID-19 shutdown crap, my brother told me it was the easiest time he has had working the job. Because they were not enforcing anything on the south side regarding "social distancing" or masks or anything.

Those days must seem like a far off memory now with shit hitting the fan this past week.

What a clusterf...

Gonna keep your cousin's husband in my thoughts and prayers along with my brother. Everyone in Chicago and surrounding area is going to need it tonight and for the foreseeable future.

Were you the one who posted this in a thread the other day? I thought it summed things up perfectly.

There's also a little bit of the Joker's "some men just want to watch the world burn" in the current situation.

What's happening now in L.A. and other cities is not that. In fact, these paid Antifa scumbags are drawing attention and sympathy away from a legit grievances in the death of Floyd.

Posted by: Chunk Hunger at May 31, 2020 04:43 PM (uhPTO)

Note that Detroit, a city that loves a good riot, was not a major participant in the national riot night out.

The gangs that control vast areas of the city did not permit Antifa's intrusion into their territory.

500 Yup -- one of those furry guys dug up a bunch of my wife's tulip bulbs. Now normally, she'd frown upon anyone using an actual firearm to end this aggression, but since she had come to like that tulip bed, she turned a blind eye as someone drilled him through the head at about 20 yards with a .22 target round out the back door. The perp shall remain nameless, of course, since the act did not quite conform to local code. My guess is that the rest of my wife's bulbs are safe.

505 The conservative treehouse blog has interesting background on the man who was killed in Minneapolis. Evidently the counterfeit money is related to a ring in the Somali people. But it is a connection that the lawyer for the family does not want to go into.
The news is also ignoring how Detroit handled the situation. Rather than holding up the police chief and mayor in Detroit as a good example, they want to hold up the cities being burned. I've decided they are not looking for solutions.its sickening. Other cities should be looking at Detroit. But they aren't.

506 A friend told me this story. He swears its true.

He had this a***h*** squirrel that liked to dig up his bulbs. The little SOB would dig up one, take a bite, drop it, dig up another, take a bite, drop it, and so on, until the bed was ruined.

Well, day, he was sitting on the porch when the squirrel started its routine - dig, bite, drop; dig, bite, drop - except that after each bite, the little rat would look at my friend, as if to say, "You gonna do something about it? Huh?"

This went on for a couple of bulbs. Then, while the tree rat is doing his stare routine ... BAM! a red-tail swoops down, seizes it, and administers the coup de grace to the back of its head, then flies off with the corpse to enjoy its meal.

510 I surrendered to the furry little tree rats. I built a squirrel feeder to keep them occupied and away from the house and bird feeders. I keep it filled with whole corn that keeps them happy. I did have to add a shield to keep the deer out. Now only the squirrels, geese, and turkeys are getting fat and delicious. The deer can feast on apples and pears from the fruit trees at the end of the summer.
