CNN: Although Covid Kills Many, Many More Men Than Women, Women Are the Real Victims, Because... Women in Health Care Make 28% Less Than Men?!?!

CNN echoes Hillary Clinton's 1998 pronouncement: "Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat."

The husbands', fathers', and sons' lives don't matter, except on how their absence might negatively affect women's finances.

What a hag.

Unrelatedly, David Reaboi makes the point the sort of fringe concern, unhinged partisanship, Surburban Empathy Mom micro-worries, and conspiracy theories that the leftwing blogs used to traffic in -- and make money from -- are now being pumped out by MSNBC and the Washington Post and especially CNN, which is now just the Democrat Undeground's AV Club:

I think that's right. I also think that explains why Vice, Buzzfeed, the various former Gawker sites, and all the blogs of the clickbait left are laying people off and going bankrupt: Because CNN is now publishing the unhinged partisan bullshit that used to earn ad revenue for Daily Kos.

If CNN is now putting out fringe clickbait, what's Vice's niche?

Speaking of which: this poor man was fired from Vice!

(not really, funny parody)

34 I'm surprised it is that high on a male-vs-female comparison in the healthcare sector. There are wildly more female nurses than male nurses, and quite a few more male doctors than female doctors. Most administrators are female.

Although there are more young female doctors than young male doctors, the overall mix is not quite 2:1 male:female. So a wage difference - all other things being equal - of 28% implies that nurse, administrator and doctor (on average, again) wages are closer to each other than I thought.

The only thing unusual about the experience was how few patients there were, how few cars in the parking lot, and generally empty the place was as I left. The dozen or so nurses I spoke to - not one wore a mask although I asked for one on the way out just in case to make the friends picking me up feel better. Had you told me we owed the nursing staff at the time a debt of gratitude for all the life-saving work they were doing, I'd have laughed you out of the room. Talk about a stupid scam on the suckers.

People need to stop thinking of these as news organizations. They are not a business that gathers and reports facts. They do not report news. They toss red meat out to their customers, because their entire business model is about staying open by pleasing their dwindling customer base.

It doesn't matter how true it is, how fair it is, how reasonable it is, how sane it is, or how professional it is. As soon as you realize this, it all suddenly makes sense and you shrug. Of course they are being ridiculous and partisan. That's what they do, its their job.

They say the gap is still 11% for people who work the same hours and have the same jobs. Though I wonder exactly what they mean by "same job". Did they group doctors into one big bin, so neurosurgeons are together with family practitioners are together with doctors working at weight loss clinics?

Even assuming they're comparing people with exactly the same jobs, the most likely explanation is childbirth. My endocrinologist took ten years off to have children. She's an awesome doctor, but you wouldn't expect her to make as much as a doctor who didn't take those ten years off.

91 The only thing to ponder abut places like CNN is why people work there. They go to journalism school, they get a job at a small station, they work their way up, hoping to do reporting and publish the news. And then they get the big time break, its CNN! Or the New York Times! Or The Washington Post! They've made it in their profession!

And... their job isn't to find the facts, dig up stories, and report the news, its to chop off pieces of red meat and throw them to the dogs. All day long. Every day. Stories get spiked that aren't red meat. Ridiculous, stupid takes are emphasized in order to get that red meat out. Their job isn't Who What Where When How, its "who does this hurt, what can we do to spin this, where is the hook that builds the bubble strong, when can we release this for maximum political effect, and how does this serve the narrative?"

That's why you get "akshually women are worse hit by the Wuhan Flu!" stories. Because the job is to find the best way to spin everything to feed that red meat out. And yeah, its clickbait vomit, its trash. This is the last of the death spiral of these former news organizations. They're at the improvisatory jazz stage in the state fair.

94 I don't know if you saw this tragedy of journalism but authentic black man Shaun King's attempt to revive abolitionist newspaper The North Star has failed.

Noah Shachtman@NoahShachtman
For the past few months, @kalihollowayftw has been taking a look at what happened at The North Star, Shaun King's effort to revive a fabled abolitionist newspaper. King blamed problems there on over-ambition, but 7 former employees paint a darker picture.

Now more than a year after its launch, with its paid membership model still active, @TheNorthStar has shuttered offices and studios, and laid off staff. The nightly news shows and apps he promised still aren't there

.@kaliHollowayftw spoke to seven former employees, all of whom were asked to sign NDAs when they left, who say King was "absent" and insistent on having "absolute control," and accuse him of "radical incompetence"

Well, at least he managed to abolish slavery.

There is no Iowering of expectations for women, but they are gentlemanly in day to day interactions. I enjoy it when I go to my office because I'm the only female and so I feel they are nice to me. (The fact that I'm the manager of half of them and the most senior person doesn't hurt either.)

I don't know if causality is that defined at this point. The government Left (the DNC, some RINOs, most of the administrative bureaucracies) and the Press are one big complex. In some cases, the Press whores might call the shots. In others, the Government Left whores will call the shots. Sometimes they might be in conflict. But if I had had kids, I would probably have taken off more than the customary 6 weeks of maternity leave, and I wouldn't be whining now about making less money than my male counterparts.

In fact, I would still like to get married and possibly have kids, and I have thought that I would probably work part time in that scenario, at least early on.

It's probably true when looking at an individual average (which is very stupid, but it's always what they do). There are more nurses than doctors, and most of them are women. There are very few male administrators. There are more male doctors than woman doctors. Doctors tend to make a lot more than nurses or administrators. So if you take "all medical women" average salary and compare it to "all medical men" average salary, then there is probably a gap. The gap isn't meaningful, but you can find one and then RHEEEEEEE about it on XiNN.

Yes, and that will always be a problem because nurses who don't like working nights and weekends can find first shift jobs in doctor's offices and as company/school nurses, etc. Many choose to do that once they have kids. See also: child gun deaths including 18 year olds (so you get gangbangers' deaths in there) and campus rape stats including an unwelcome kiss.

What happens when they control for tenure?

The demographics of the medical industry have been shifting and it is becoming increasingly female. Young/newly graduated doctors are now majority female in some areas. On balance, though, there are still more men and those men are, on average, older. Which means they have been active longer and have more experience.

So even if the "same job, same hours" gap exists, what happens if you control for other obvious confounding elements like age, experience and locale? Do female cardiologists with 10-15 years' experience and full patient load in San Francisco really earn 11% than male cardiologists with 10-15 years' experience and full patient load in San Francisco?

I'll bet not. The more variables you control for, the smaller the gap gets (and in some industries it inverts slightly).

It's a horrifying development - as much as the founders hated the Press - (hint: they did) - they figured that no one party or person would capture it completely and if left free, they would write what they write about all sides, regardless of who paid the freight - or if they were bought, all sides could buy in to it...they were wrong.

The press as we know it today can no longer be shamed or at least laisse faire as to who bought them as the founders once thought, they hide behind press protections the founders never envisioned like libel protections and illegal leak protections...and they now adhere to only the socialist progressive agenda because its not about their own self-preservation - they could give two shits about a free press, that's a con - its all about being able to sit at the power table.

-Last of Us had a lot of fans before it kind of got... corrupted

-Last of Us 2 is coming out. It's going to be very, very woke.

-someone leaked the woke plot lines in the game online

-Sony and Naughty Dog started abusing the youtube copyright protection system to get people in trouble who were merely discussing the leaks, not showing the leaks themselves.

-They did that some more

-They did that even more

-then there was the inevitable blaming of those who merely said they did not like the direction these leaks said the story was going, if true.

-its a pretty tawdry mess

Yeah, it's gonna suck for them because this is a zero-sum game.

Those who advocate for forced "equity" in the workplace (that your internal demographics must match the overall demographics, or exceed them in terms of minority or female employment) don't seem to realize that if they get their way, this is exactly what *must* happen. If you want to "level the field" in engineering, then those women have to come from somewhere. Will it be education? Medicine? Biology? Then men - evil, nasty men - will have to be forced into those jobs. And women - sainted, long-suffering women - will have to be forced into jobs bricklaying and coal mining.

What they want is zero-sum, and they seem to think that they will get away with it while seeing only the outcomes they want.*

* which they will, if we go down that road. People will happily fire men to make way for women, but nobody will ever force a woman to work as an oil rigger.

And it looks like they lumped everyone into a few bins, that is, they lumped all MD's in one category and didn't make a distinction between specialties. Finally the gap is largest in the upper tier of age and seniority where you expect it.

Then they want to take time off to go with their 2nd grader's school trip to the zoo, and birthday parties and 3 day weekends and...the list goes on. It wasn't unusual for me to have 6 Hygienist employees to fill One and a Half full time positions in patient care. And if that wasn't bad enough they wanted us to schedule their patients around their availability. If patients didn't show up for their appointment or during an economic recession it wasn't unusual for those part time employees to take more per hour out of the practice than the doctor/owner did during the same time period.

290 Our Engineering Department hires a bunch of new grads every year.

One year they hired two women into the same section, Jill1 and Jill2.

Jill1 was fantastic, probably the best engineer of that year.
Jill2 not so much. Fast forward four years, Jill2 decides to quit and go ski bum with her boyfriend in Colorado. No loss, I don't think they even bothered to fill her slot.

Jill1 is promoted to section leader. She was very good, I worked for her and had nothing but respect. She does this for three years, we think she will be moving up to manager next, but...

She has a kid, takes nine months off, comes back, leaves after two months, because she doesn't want her parents raising their kid, she and her husband want to raise their kid.

She sometimes fills in for projects, but part time only.

Absolutely. Berkeley Marxists used to hang around the Cafe Mediterranean smoking Gauloises, blowing smoke rings, and pontificating about the ideal (read: Marxist) society that would, per Marx, permit everyone to become a fully actualized human being, being a hunter in the morning, a farmer in the afternoon, a literary critic in the evening, wrestle in the nude with beautiful starlets that night.

Periodically, however, someone would pipe up, "But who's going to collect the trash?"

Good times, good times.

And when I asked if they were willing to put in 60 hour weeks for years for a *chance* to get to the C ring the answer was, why would I want to do that?

I did have one woman point out that to pull that off, especially if you want kids too, you need to have a stay home spouse. Which is generally true - look at who most CEOs are married to.

But when we talked about it more she claimed, quite strongly, that she didn't want a lay about husband that was just going to leech off of her....

357 Wow.

I have a very strange hobby of collecting other people's discarded personal papers and letters. I will sometimes go to estate sales and garage sales where they're emptying out their parents' house and specifically I'll look around to see if they're throwing away granddad's box of letters and random paper ephemera. Every now and then, I'll hit the jackpot.

Then on cozy winter nights, instead of reading some dumb mystery paperback, I'll pore through other people's lives, reading their letters or diaries. Very entertaining. And sometimes historically illuminating.

Well just now I was re-organizing some of the boxes of paper I'll collected over the years, and stumbled across something amazing.

The box was from someone's dad who had been in the Army not just in WWII but also in the late '40s after the war. And his job was being a medic.

In 1946, he had taken a military class as part of his training -- and the class (at the SF Presidio Army base military hospital) was about venereal diseases in the military, and how they can be stopped. The medics/students were being trained to give presentations to platoons about how not to catch VD.

And he kept all the mimeographed sheets they handed out as class instructional material. One of them was about the rates of VD in the Army at that time.

And they actually broke it down by race, surprisingly.

But even more surprising were the actual stats:

"22 out of 1,000 white soldiers have VD
440 out of 1,000 negro soldiers have VD."

In other words, in 1946, about 2% of white soldiers had syphilis or gonorrhea, while a jaw-dropping 44% of black soldiers had syphilis or gonorrhea.

44% ??!?!?!?

The stats were just tossed out there casually, and never referenced agin anywhere in the material.

I don't even know what to say!

Welcome to the US Military for the last 40 years.

I had just returned from Desert Storm as an Electronic Technician First Class (E=6) where I had run a 33 Man Division on a Destroyer (literally had no Chiefs in the Div, and my Division Officer, instead of the usual Warrant Officer, was an Line Ensign, who did not know electronics at all).

When my Radioman First Class Wife (ie, same rank as me) who had never been to sea or deployed anywhere in her career, Made Chief Petty Officer.

Dressed up and went to her Advancement ceremony, where we got some very strange looks from her Officers.

She had 3 Ribbons, one for getting out of Bootcamp.

I had 5 Rows of ribbons (didn't wear medals that day), and everyone in her command knew I had just come back from Storm.

She would now outrank me.

That's when I really knew that the REAL Navy was done.

I'm glad my company doesn't do this. I would not be happy.

I'm blessed in that the vast majority of my colleagues, male and female, are great, and it seems to be a meritocracy in general.

With a meritocracy, you can organically end up with genuine diversity. E.g., in my region, 3 of the 7 team leaders are black, one is an older Asian man, 2 are white Americans, and one is Turkish. The two of us that are women are black. The boss, boss's boss, and our line management up to CEO are white men.

And no one cares.

When we hire, we just look for good people.

We did hire some chick some years ago when I was more junior. I didn't like her attitude during her seminar when she was quite rude answering my questions. (Most people are very deferential since they are trying to get a job.)

Everyone seemed to like her so I didn't speak up. She didn't last one month. She was basically an entitled b#@ch and tried to get me involved in suing my company for sexual discrimination. I was very glad when she announced she was going. (I don't think she gave the company any notice.)

she was a newlywed, and all I could think was that I felt sorry for her husband.

380 The only thing to ponder abut places like CNN is why people work there.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 26, 2020 07:23 PM (KZzsI)

Is this how you think these people get jobs nowdays? I don't think a fraction have ever done ANY reporting, even liberal stuff.

Now I imagine they get hired right out of college by liberal HR departments, join a trendy website company out of college and jump when they make a name, or join a lefty political campaign and swap over once they make contacts.

But in truth ... I'd do it all again. Because I'm a slow learner I was doing what I loved.

384 I swear people come up with these stats by doing stuff lke

"add up all the total pay for all men in a hospital and divide by their number. Now add up all the total pay for women and divide by their number. SEE, WOMEN ARE PAID LESS!"

Yeah, that top ranked brain surgeon and the hospital's head get huge money and the nurses get a lot less. They're offset by the pennies the janitor gets, but not enough to make up for it.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 26, 2020 07:53 PM (KZzsI)

You are way behind the times. These days they just make it up. That's why all these studies give the same result that men make 25-30 percent more. Even a study as worthless as the one you describe would have different variances for male dominated societies where women are shut out.

They take the numbers and swish em around until they get the accepted value and publish.

There was a study that came out a while back that said that male nurses make more per year than female nurses. This was supposedly shocking because nursing is a female-dominated profession.
