I'm surprised it is that high on a male-vs-female comparison in the healthcare sector. There are wildly more female nurses than male nurses, and quite a few more male doctors than female doctors. Most administrators are female.
Although there are more young female doctors than young male doctors, the overall mix is not quite 2:1 male:female. So a wage difference - all other things being equal - of 28% implies that nurse, administrator and doctor (on average, again) wages are closer to each other than I thought.

About a month and a half ago, I had to ER it to a hospital for emergency surgery. Spent 5 days in recovery. The only thing unusual about the experience was how few patients there were, how few cars in the parking lot, and generally empty the place was as I left. The dozen or so nurses I spoke to - not one wore a mask although I asked for one on the way out just in case to make the friends picking me up feel better. Had you told me we owed the nursing staff at the time a debt of gratitude for all the life-saving work they were doing, I'd have laughed you out of the room. Talk about a stupid scam on the suckers.

People need to stop thinking of these as news organizations. They are not a business that gathers and reports facts. They do not report news. They toss red meat out to their customers, because their entire business model is about staying open by pleasing their dwindling customer base.
It doesn't matter how true it is, how fair it is, how reasonable it is, how sane it is, or how professional it is. As soon as you realize this, it all suddenly makes sense and you shrug. Of course they are being ridiculous and partisan. That's what they do, its their job.

The only thing to ponder abut places like CNN is why people work there. They go to journalism school, they get a job at a small station, they work their way up, hoping to do reporting and publish the news. And then they get the big time break, its CNN! Or the New York Times! Or The Washington Post! They've made it in their profession!
And... their job isn't to find the facts, dig up stories, and report the news, its to chop off pieces of red meat and throw them to the dogs. All day long. Every day. Stories get spiked that aren't red meat. Ridiculous, stupid takes are emphasized in order to get that red meat out. Their job isn't Who What Where When How, its "who does this hurt, what can we do to spin this, where is the hook that builds the bubble strong, when can we release this for maximum political effect, and how does this serve the narrative?"
That's why you get "akshually women are worse hit by the Wuhan Flu!" stories. Because the job is to find the best way to spin everything to feed that red meat out. And yeah, its clickbait vomit, its trash. This is the last of the death spiral of these former news organizations. They're at the improvisatory jazz stage in the state fair.

But you know what? The men I work with value me and other female colleagues, but because they are gentlemen, they treat us like ladies without being patronizing.
I'm not really expressing myself clearly.
There is no Iowering of expectations for women, but they are gentlemanly in day to day interactions. I enjoy it when I go to my office because I'm the only female and so I feel they are nice to me. (The fact that I'm the manager of half of them and the most senior person doesn't hurt either.)

I had three great kids and knew, when the first was born, that I could not hand him off for someone else to raise 10 hours a day. Because of that, I made staying home work for me. Well that, and we woman make perfectly valid choices that tend to suppress our salary path. I had three great kids and knew, when the first was born, that I could not hand him off for someone else to raise 10 hours a day. Because of that, I made staying home work for me. I regret none of that but then I am not a whiny liberal who think I should make as much as someone who didn't take that 10 year break.

In fact, I would still like to get married and possibly have kids, and I have thought that I would probably work part time in that scenario, at least early on.

My mom - a retired nurse from the 50s - 70s bemoans the fact that nursing used to be an entirely different wonderful experience for them - all women, white uniform (not lazy filthy scrubs), lots of hospitals were religious based (St Joseph's, et al), and emphasis was on patient comfort. It's probably true when looking at an individual average (which is very stupid, but it's always what they do). There are more nurses than doctors, and most of them are women. There are very few male administrators. There are more male doctors than woman doctors. Doctors tend to make a lot more than nurses or administrators. So if you take "all medical women" average salary and compare it to "all medical men" average salary, then there is probably a gap. The gap isn't meaningful, but you can find one and then RHEEEEEEE about it on XiNN.

When he came back his position was filled and he was shunted off to a place holder job.
The wife points out that's how career women get hit and now he knows how it is.
I pointed out it's tough to let anybody in a major position walk off the job for 2 months, and it's tough to expect the person who fills in for you to go back to whatever they were doing.
But you know, we should be allowed to 'have it all!' despite the choices WE make, right?

If it's any comfort to the career ladies, my son, a 'director' at a good sized internet job search company took 2 months off, which was allowed, in their health plan, whatever, for his "paternity" leave.
When he came back his position was filled and he was shunted off to a place holder job.
The wife points out that's how career women get hit and now he knows how it is.
I pointed out it's tough to let anybody in a major position walk off the job for 2 months, and it's tough to expect the person who fills in for you to go back to whatever they were doing.
But you know, we should be allowed to 'have it all!' despite the choices WE make, right?

I'm not against maternity leave as a concept since women are the ones who give birth to babies. But months of paternity leave? Sorry, no.

It's not my thing, but the YouTube/Twitch gaming communities are pretty huge and command astonishing aggregate viewership. Going after that with DMCA takedowns is insane. If the game sucks, the game sucks but these communities drive massive engagement. This seems like a bad idea.

I think a lot of people on this thread are missing the obvious: Even with standardized pay equal for gender LOTS of women don't want to work full time, they want to work part time. Then they want to take time off to go with their 2nd grader's school trip to the zoo, and birthday parties and 3 day weekends and...the list goes on. It wasn't unusual for me to have 6 Hygienist employees to fill One and a Half full time positions in patient care. And if that wasn't bad enough they wanted us to schedule their patients around their availability. If patients didn't show up for their appointment or during an economic recession it wasn't unusual for those part time employees to take more per hour out of the practice than the doctor/owner did during the same time period.

Have him go to trade school and have him get his pilot's license locally and start building flying time and see if he even likes it. . You need a ton of hours to get an ATP (Airline Transport rating) and you can't get it all at school, you still have to build time.

We've jokingly suggested that for STEM subjects. There are no barriers to women going into STEM. Quite the contrary. But it turns out that a lot of women just aren't that interested. Who IS interested? Disproportionately Aspie-type males who tinkered with physics, chemistry, engineering, math, computer programming, etc. as an obsession hobby since they were nippers.

They do in my high-tech private company. We have very strict "diversity" goals handed down by management. Right now, we'll hire a "good enough" woman instead of an exceptional man because if we don't hit those goals then we'll lose any new headcount to other locations that hit the targets.

My wife works for a HUGE legal firm. Lots of female attorneys hired fresh out of school. Sooner or later one of them gets pregnant and swears "they're only going to take their 6 weeks paternity leave and come right back to their career". The older associates always have a pool running on whether or not she'll actually make it back to the firm because the reality is, once they have that newborn in their arms, their whole reality changes and it's a 50/50 coin toss as to whether they'll come back or send in their resignation.

Is an orthopedic surgeon with 20 years of experience equal to an internist with 2 years of experience? Which specialties command higher rates? Which docs get more money because of their reputation and community fundraising/research output? So many factors are never looked at, yet the libs piss and moan.

I dunno, I've seen lots of short films about women plumbers, gas station attendants, pizza delivery drivers, maids, pool girls etc. ... seems like they are very well represented in blue collar jobs...

They have a pilot training program that gives some students a free ride if they agree to work a couple of years as mission pilots in South America after getting their commercial ticket. I have a very strange hobby of collecting other people's discarded personal papers and letters. I will sometimes go to estate sales and garage sales where they're emptying out their parents' house and specifically I'll look around to see if they're throwing away granddad's box of letters and random paper ephemera. Every now and then, I'll hit the jackpot.
Then on cozy winter nights, instead of reading some dumb mystery paperback, I'll pore through other people's lives, reading their letters or diaries. Very entertaining. And sometimes historically illuminating.

The box was from someone's dad who had been in the Army not just in WWII but also in the late '40s after the war. And his job was being a medic.
In 1946, he had taken a military class as part of his training -- and the class (at the SF Presidio Army base military hospital) was about venereal diseases in the military, and how they can be stopped. The medics/students were being trained to give presentations to platoons about how not to catch VD.
And he kept all the mimeographed sheets they handed out as class instructional material. One of them was about the rates of VD in the Army at that time.
And they actually broke it down by race, surprisingly.
But even more surprising were the actual stats:
"22 out of 1,000 white soldiers have VD
440 out of 1,000 negro soldiers have VD."
In other words, in 1946, about 2% of white soldiers had syphilis or gonorrhea, while a jaw-dropping 44% of black soldiers had syphilis or gonorrhea.
44% ??!?!?!?
The stats were just tossed out there casually, and never referenced agin anywhere in the material.
I don't even know what to say!

That's when I really knew that the REAL Navy was done.

I'm blessed in that the vast majority of my colleagues, male and female, are great, and it seems to be a meritocracy in general.
With a meritocracy, you can organically end up with genuine diversity. E.g., in my region, 3 of the 7 team leaders are black, one is an older Asian man, 2 are white Americans, and one is Turkish. The two of us that are women are black. The boss, boss's boss, and our line management up to CEO are white men.
And no one cares.
When we hire, we just look for good people.
We did hire some chick some years ago when I was more junior. I didn't like her attitude during her seminar when she was quite rude answering my questions. (Most people are very deferential since they are trying to get a job.)
Everyone seemed to like her so I didn't speak up. She didn't last one month. She was basically an entitled b#@ch and tried to get me involved in suing my company for sexual discrimination. I was very glad when she announced she was going. (I don't think she gave the company any notice.)

The only thing to ponder abut places like CNN is why people work there. They go to journalism school, they get a job at a small station, they work their way up, hoping to do reporting and publish the news. And then they get the big time break, its CNN! Or the New York Times! Or The Washington Post! They've made it in their profession!
And... their job isn't to find the facts, dig up stories, and report the news, its to chop off pieces of red meat and throw them to the dogs. All day long. Every day. Stories get spiked that aren't red meat. Ridiculous, stupid takes are emphasized in order to get that red meat out. Their job isn't Who What Where When How, its "who does this hurt, what can we do to spin this, where is the hook that builds the bubble strong, when can we release this for maximum political effect, and how does this serve the narrative?"
That's why you get "akshually women are worse hit by the Wuhan Flu!" stories. Because the job is to find the best way to spin everything to feed that red meat out. And yeah, its clickbait vomit, its trash. This is the last of the death spiral of these former news organizations. They're at the improvisatory jazz stage in the state fair.

Is this how you think these people get jobs nowdays? I don't think a fraction have ever done ANY reporting, even liberal stuff.
Now I imagine they get hired right out of college by liberal HR departments, join a trendy website company out of college and jump when they make a name, or join a lefty political campaign and swap over once they make contacts.
And... their job isn't to find the facts, dig up stories, and report the news, its to chop off pieces of red meat and throw them to the dogs. All day long. Every day. Stories get spiked that aren't red meat. Ridiculous, stupid takes are emphasized in order to get that red meat out. Their job isn't Who What Where When How, its "who does this hurt, what can we do to spin this, where is the hook that builds the bubble strong, when can we release this for maximum political effect, and how does this serve the narrative?"
That's why you get "akshually women are worse hit by the Wuhan Flu!" stories. Because the job is to find the best way to spin everything to feed that red meat out. And yeah, its clickbait vomit, its trash. This is the last of the death spiral of these former news organizations. They're at the improvisatory jazz stage in the state fair.

You should have joined industry . Good or great pay, and depending on where you work, it could be really interesting too.
I wanted to go into academia and was planning to do a postdoc but that didn't pan out and I got an industry job instead. I sometimes say it's as interesting as I thought academia would be, but I don't have to look for grant money.

I did, later. And in fairness, I wasn't there before sunrise. I came in around 8 am, lecturer at 8:30, and left at midnight, catching the last bus home to eat dinner, go to bed, and do it all over again. For year after year. It was brutal.
But in truth ... I'd do it all again. BecauseI'm a slow learner I was doing what I loved.

I was sure I would be OK with going back to work fairly quickly when I was pregnant the first time. When they put my son in my arms for the first time, that plan became a joke. Your whole axis just shifts and you don't know what it is going to be like until you are right there experiencing it.

A friend of mine who was a 'normal' SW developer and political wonk like all of us here had a child and when I visited her just after she had 100 percent "Mom-dar" at the mall we had lunch in. She was hyper aware of all small children within a mile at all times.

Yeah, that top ranked brain surgeon and the hospital's head get huge money and the nurses get a lot less. They're offset by the pennies the janitor gets, but not enough to make up for it.

I don't know what anyone is talking about. I've been in healthcare for a long time, and nowhere I've ever worked has there ever been a gender pay gap. Nowhere.

There was a study that came out a while back that said that male nurses make more per year than female nurses. This was supposedly shocking because nursing is a female-dominated profession.
