The Occasional Fishing Thread, Circle of Life Edition [Bandersnatch]

Welcome Piscators and Piscatrixes, Nimrods and Nimrettes, and Rough Riders of all genders to the current installment of the occasional fishing and hunting and other wholesome outdoorsness thread, It’s All Connected Edition.

052320-01.jpg

One of the joys of the outdoors is its invitation to Nerddom, or the way it invites compulsive or spectrum types to explore increasingly expanding circles of knowledge. You start with the simplest question – where should I fish? Well, the fish are where the bait is. Why is the bait there? Well, if you’re a freshwater guy, it depends on whether it’s a freestone creek (water tumbles down hillsides) or a spring creek (water upwells through limestone) and the different chemistries of those waters. Then you can branch out into bug biology or geology and each of those will lead you somewhere fresh and new.

Like that pretty little feller up top. Mayflies are of the order Ephemeroptera because they are ephemeral. They get born under rocks in a stream and live 364 days as nasty little crawlies who get eaten by trout whenever they come out from under the rocks. Then they moult as butterflies do and struggle out of their bug shells at the surface and emerge as pretty, delicate, flying creatures. They fly around pretty for one day and have all the bug sex they’re ever going to have and die. Insert your own metaphor.

Of course, you have to dial in the level of nerdiness that fits you. I was on a stream once when an old guy told me that the pattern I was using was a mayfly with two tails and the kind that was hostaing now has three. Thank you, Isaak Walton. You don’t have to know everything. If there’s a good shop near where you’re fishing they’ll tell you what’s going on.

052320-02.jpg

That’s from Upcountry Sportfishing’s Framington River report. If you ever fish central CT check them out.

In saltwater – and I’m really a saltwater guy – it’s the Moon that’s important, at least inshore. In a forum like this (fishing Morons) we were talking about when to fish and one guy said I like Plum Island at dawn at low tide, particularly when it coincides with the New Moon. I said it always does. He said huh?

The tide follows the Moon inexorably. The Moon has a 28 day cycle which means that in a 24 hour day it advances the tide by close to an hour a day. So if high tide was 7:00 this morning it will be close to 8:00 tomorrow. A very handy thing about the tide on Boston, which includes Plum Island and the Outer Cape, is that high tide on a Full and a New Moon is at Midnight. Hence low tide at dawn. There are two tides a day each about six hours in each direction. So if I’ve been watching the Moon for a few days to know if it’s waxing or waning I don’t need a tide chart. I’ll catch the end of the outgoing at Scorton, then look at Bourne’s to see what it’s doing, then wander out to Nauset, it should be halfway into the incoming by then.

052320-04.jpg

Now I’m going to tell a story about how some people are just magic. There was a famous fisherman named Tony. Every local knew his truck – he called it his buggy; he called his cabin on the sandbar a camp; I think all the camps are gone now and so is Tony – and people would shadow him. He hated that and if he were on to a fish when someone he didn’t know showed up he’d point his rod straight at the fish so that there was no bend to it and the onlooker wouldn’t know he was on.

So one night I saw his buggy at cutoff #3. The way the Oversand Permit works is you can’t drive on the beach, you drive a sand road behind the dunes and enter at the numbered cutoffs. I kept going and fished at #5, #7, and #9. It was a flat calm night, There was no wind, no surf, no sounds. It was the kind of night where any fish chased any food you’d hear the the food splashing from a dozen yards away. You’d see the bait ripples on the moonlit glassy surface. I scientifically verified that there were absolutely no fish.

I stopped off at #3 just to say hi. I didn’t take my rod out of the truck, just a friendly tonight sucks chat. “Hey Mike! Can you believe ALL THE FISH!” What? Mother Eff. So the thing to do that night was to lay out a black eel-like plug and not retrieve it, just twitch it on the surface. I went back and tied on a black eel-like fly, twitched it, caught a fish on the first cast and went home.

I’m making him an honorary late Moron for tonight:

This was our view this past weekend at Camp Defiance.

Winston, a Dreg of Society took the shot.

We had an EPIC campfire. Simply freaking ROARING. Didn’t hit the sleeping mat until after 2.

And there was a lot of bourbon involved, and wine. And beer.

But there was mostly freedom and laughter. And camaraderie.

Then again, we’re talking about Morons.

052320-07.jpg

Moron attempt at setting up a shelter. It was raining slightly. And NO, we didn’t have the excuse of wind. I think the boy were just drunk.
And they refused to read the directions.
Like I said, it was a hoot.

And with that we move on to the raison d’etre of this here HQ, the comments section. Brickbats, praise, and fish brag pics are welcome at aoshqfish at sign gmail thing

6 So, we have hex limbatas in our rivers like the Pine and AuSable. We have legions of mayflies on Lake Erie but I do not know their Latino name (hector?) . I do know they both require very clean water and a specific water temp.
The fish shut off the feed bag on Erie when the mayflies are hatching.

23 Yes the 'camps' on Nauset are all gone and I'm not sure how much of the buggy trail goes past the public beach in Orleans . For those who espouse this climate change hysteria, the last 50 years of the Atlantic reworking Nauset and Monomoy is a simple lesson in that Nature , the ocean the tides do what they want . But as to striper , that is a beauty . Knew a guy , a chef with a Michelin Star to his credit , used to catch them on Nantucket and grill them up on an open wood fire right there on the beach .Striper is the best eating fish bar none and I include wild caught Arctic char and wild Atlantic salmon from the Bonaventure thank you v much. Striper is the best

29 the last 50 years of the Atlantic reworking Nauset and Monomoy is a simple lesson in that Nature , the ocean the tides do what they want

There was a cutthough at Harding's, there was a Bathtub, now the Bathtub is gone and that part of South Beach is an island. Monomoy is one island. Monomoy is two islands.

I have an 1879 map of Scituate where I used to live that shows the mouth of the North River five miles down from where it is now. One stormy night in 1898 the ocean just said nah I'll punch through here instead.

When I was a kid living in NY, we used to belong to a club that had an island in the middle of Long Island Sound. Nothing fancy, just a dot in the Sound.

I forget which hurricane it was but some years ago the entire island disappeared in that storm. Just wiped off the chart.

Posted by: JackStraw at May 23, 2020 08:03 PM (ZLI7S)

33 And that tidal timing thing?

Better watch out cause some places have restrictions and flow from futher down or up coast and will NOT be on time.

Lots of dead/or stranded sailors have gotten caught by that.

The interval between tides is okay but not coincident necessarily with other places right up the coast in oceanside compared to further inland.

This especially applies to places like the NE American Coast with lots of bays and tidal marshes and rivers.

And there's where a good tidal chart/booklet will come in very handy.

36 Hi Bander! I love this thread. Fishing and camping and being free.

Marine ratched used to squish mayflies and stick them on a hook with some line tied to a stick. He would pull out brown trout from the stocked lakes in the Olympic National Park. They were non native, so no limit and no license necessary.

Fresh trout over a campfire are delightful. A little lemon, a drizzle of ice oil, some salt and pepper.

Much better than looking in the rear view mirror and noticing smoke trailing off of a axle stub.

For years I've been in the habit of touch-testing trailer bearings anytime I stop and get out of the vehicle. Having a spare set in the truck is a good idea.

I rate this,,, unpossible.
It's, you know, a bass. Might be better than a fresh water bass but, low bar.

'Round these parts we have walleye, crappie, bluegill, redear and bluecats.
Speaking of crappie, have 6 nice fillers I need to get in the hot oil for dinner.
Then out after some more.

Think I have around 130 fillers in the freezer,,, and they aren't done spawning yet.
Hoping for a couple hundred and then,,, time to wrassle some blue cats.
Minimum size limit on those in the reservoirs, 35 in.
Have fun.

Child. Those are freshwater fish. All saltwater fish are superior to freshwater fish (except maybe bluefish, that's an acquired thing), but striped bass is truly extraordinary.

People will sell you something called bronzini (I'm not even going to look up the spelling) which is a farmed fish based on the inferior Mediterranean version of the striped bass and charge the beaucoups because it's Italian. (It's farmed in Croatia).

80 I almost feel sorry for the fish. The parking lot for the stocked lake near me (a pond, really. 80 acres at most) is packed all the time.

Don't feel sorry for them, stockies are the Red Shirts of fish. They're farmed and planted like the tilapia in your grocery store. They exist to take the fishing pressure off the real fish.

Pennsylvania is full of real fish, wild native brook trout in unstocked streams.

83 They fly around pretty for one day and have all the bug sex they're ever going to have and die. Insert your own metaphor.

All the sex you want in one day? Luxury. I had to work for YEARS to try it once.

As to saltwater fishing? I've seen things, man. Things.

But the best single night was when a school of whitefish moved into the harbor one night, and they would hit an empty hook. So we stopped to build a double hook rig, so we could catch two at a time.

With no bait. It took us 3 hours to clean them all.

I remembered you'd spent time around here.
The rock climbers have been camping there throughout our shutdown. No one has bothered them at all.
We had two state troopers drive by early in the first afternoon. They didn't stop.
The tents, excepting the example shown, all stayed up pretty well. I think late attempt, in the rain and a tad too much alcohol conspired to thwart the tent builders.

Ahhh, Camp Defiance! Home of the 3rd Kansas, right on the Missouri border. Later, grew to become the Council Grove area.

The latter became quite popular for meetings every few months between the native peoples and the white settlers. food, blankets, and women were freely traded.

The women particularly look forward to this. White women were excited to find that it was true what they say about how the native bucks were gifted. And the Indian women appreciated the white men using soap, and anal lube.

Later the Irish arrived, and all was ruined...

There, train loads full of Kansas City Faggots had immigrated to, in order to establish the land grant school the Emporia State College of Pederasty and Interpretive Dance.

140 Best tent I've ever owned is the stakeless one man The North Face Tadpole. I think ot cost me $240 in 1989. Big enough for one person and a backpack. I've kept dry in it through torrential downpours from Canada to New Zealand. Unlike other things I've owned I've taken meticulous care of this tent - now thirty years old. I've destroyed at least a dozen sleeping backs In the same amount of years.

Tents from Walmart and Kmart are great for backyard lawn camping. I'd not depend on them for more than a two night car camping expedition.

Expect to buy robust aftermarket stakes because the factory stakes are too short and bendy - the heavy 12" yellow plastic type are good.
Surveyors twine (it doesn't stretch).
8x8 plastic tarp.
The factory guy-lines are slick and waxy so be prepared to knot them firmly after staking - (the little friction tensioner on the guys will always slip and fail.)

144 Mayflies were called Willow Flies by our (very large and extended) family growing up.
They would blanket the docks during the evenings at Dale Hollow Lake and the spiders would gorge themselves. They only swarmed for a short time, and afterwards they were not commonly seen.
They rest just as they appear in the photo, and you can just pinch their wings together and they will wriggle around, but they are too delicate to use as bait.

145 And as far as motorcycles go? I've owned a few. In the mid nineties I switched from enduro riding to observed trials. I rode a 250 Montessa and my uncle rode a late 50's 350 or 500 rigid frame Enfield in ARMA competitions. Uncle won the western super senior rigid class one year. He bashed the case on something in a section and started spewing huge amounts of oil so I rode back to camp, grabbed a few quarts of oil, and refilled his case as he rode the course.
