The Saturday Night Joke

A very useful guide to applications of common tools – you may want to review frequently:

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh shit!'

DROP SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting on fire various flammable objects in your shop. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

ADJUSTABLE WRENCH: aka "Another hammer", aka "the Swedish Nut Lathe", aka "Crescent Wrench". Commonly used as a one size fits all wrench, usually results in rounding off nut heads before the use of pliers. Will randomly adjust size between bolts, resulting in busted knuckles, curse words, and multiple threats to any inanimate objects within the immediate vicinity.

SON OF A BITCH TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'SON OF A BITCH!' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.
H/T Cousin Chuck

I normally attempt to keep the Saturday ONT carefree, light and perhaps even funny. I try to stay away from current events. However, this story made me snicker.

Why yes, I'm from the government and am better than you and smarter than you. LOLGF!!!

Washington state officials have acknowledged the loss of “hundreds of millions of dollars” to an international fraud scheme that hammered the state’s unemployment insurance system and could mean even longer delays for thousands of jobless workers still waiting for legitimate benefits.

Suzi LeVine, commissioner of the state Employment Security Department (ESD), disclosed the staggering losses during a news conference Thursday afternoon. LeVine declined to specify how much money was stolen during the scam, which is believed to be orchestrated from Nigeria. But she conceded that the amount was “orders of magnitude above” the $1.6 million that the ESD reported losing to fraudsters in April

This past week a couple of commenters have linked an image of a card stating the ADA allows you to be unmasked in Karen locations. Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true.

Seyfarth Synopsis: Reopening businesses must quickly prepare for customers claiming the ADA exempts them from face mask requirements.

Business re-opening their doors to serve customers have many issues to consider, and now they must add to their list customers refusing to wear masks because of a claimed disability.

Many businesses are now requiring customers to wear masks at their places of business, either on their own accord or to comply with governmental mandates. There are now reports of customers refusing to comply with this requirement, claiming that their disability prevents them from wearing masks and a refusal to grant them an exemption violates the Title III of the ADA. We have even seen a document which displays the Department of Justice (DOJ) seal stating that the ADA exempts individuals with disabilities from wearing masks and references penalties for ADA violations. While it is apparent to us that the document is not issued by the DOJ, is there a basis under the ADA for the objection?

It looks like the Horde lost a Moron. Epic obituary for Randall Jacobs of Phoenix.

According to the tribute, Jacobs’ friends called him RJ, but he was affectionately known as Uncle Bunky or "The Bunkster" to his family. Jacobs fearlessly lived his life in a way “that would have sent a lesser man to his grave decades earlier” and always did as he pleased.

“Uncle Bunky burned the candle, and whatever else was handy, at both ends. He spoke in a gravelly patois of wisecracks, mangled metaphors, and inspired profanity that reflected the Arizona dive bars, Colorado ski slopes, and various dodgy establishments where he spent his days and nights,” the obituary read. “He was a living, breathing ‘hang loose’ sign, a swaggering hybrid of Zoni desert rat, SoCal hobo, and Telluride ski bum.”

Known and loved for his one-of-a-kind personality and sense of adventure, Jacobs had a “chaotic energy and hysterical charm” as well as a “gentle soul.”

Sentimental hygiene and the case of the Genius Award Winner.

Meet Robin Hamilton of Hawthorne, Florida; the only woman ever to peer into the Ark of the Covenant and live to tell the tale.

Robin is a simple woman with simple tastes. She likes long walks on the beach, cuddling her favorite towel, and a roaring house fire with people inside.

Robin Hamilton, 57, was arrested shortly after Saturday’s fire behind a Hawthorne trailer home.

A woman told Alachua County deputies that she was renting the shed from Hamilton and living there with her two dogs. The woman said Hamilton had been drunk and threatened to “burn her out” because of a missing towel that had sentimental value to Hamilton.

So--walked down to the park with my daughter and two granddaughters this evening.

To my amazement, the playground there was full of families and children playing. Remnants of police tape were hanging from every piece of playground equipment.

Well, Biden is planning on beating himself, and is also deciding which black people are really black, so, it's not looking good for the dems.

Then, you have people fed up with being under house arrest and liberals are telling you to, " shut up and wear your mask", while Trump is pushing to reopen stuff.

Liberals and democrats are tone deaf.

One duckboard came up, I tripped, hit the RV pad concrete, and tore off two palm calluses right through the glove as I stopped my head from smacking into the concrete. Lots of blood. Still got a scar.

My engineer FIL was spending the summer with us and pulled me aside and said never, ever use that saw.

The saw just vanished during the move to the house. T'was an unsolved mystery.

Posted by: Beartooth at May 23, 2020 10:28 PM (fpc+A)

190 Best ways to maximize safety when using a Table Saw.

* remove all guards and anti-kickback devices.

* learn to properly set up a rip-fence.

* learn to properly set-up offset parallel guides for when the work would be too small to fit between a fence and the blade.

* learn every manner of push-stick, feathering stick and friction push-pad.

* use ONLY the very sharpest blades.

* never stand in direct alignment with the rotation of the blade while material is going across the saw.

* do wear a face shield, always.

* understand at ALL TIMES that the Table Saw IS TRYING TO KILL YOU!

Most of the "accidents" I see on a table saw, are caused by the work (piece of wood), dragging against or being snagged by, the very "safety devices" that the lawyers demand be installed.

It is the misplaced "trust" in those "guards" that most often leads to disaster.

Get rid of all that stuff and BE your own safety device.

And never, ever EVER trust the safety device.

Approach a Table Saw, sans "guards" with dread, awe and a modicum of fear, and your odds of remaining injury free, improve dramatically.

Yeah, Bachman was a founding member of the Guess Who, and was a big part of that song. The Guess Who broke up amid some acrimony, and Bachman and Turner formed BTO, and Burton Cummings went off solo. But they have since mended fences, and have done a number of Guess Who reunion concerts.

248 Almost all the counties in Oregon have been allowed to semi-reopen.

The exception is the county that Portland is in, plus the two adjacent suburban counties.

Well, one of the suburban counties was allowed to semi-reopen today, and Portland Reddit was openly rooting for mass death on the suburbanites, since everything should be shut down forever. Apparently ambulances will be picking up bodies on the street three weeks from now.

One post (slightly censored) summed it up:

At this point I hope a sh*t ton of people die from this f*cking thing. The ignorance is killing me.

Since the county has been averaging less than one hospitalization a day, and about one death a week, things will have to get much, much worse to satisfy this guy.

The county that Portland is in has set no date for reopening, of course.

The county states: "Multnomah County has included additional equity standards for reopening and may adjust its strategies as needed to protect public health."

Translation: Multnomah County is not going to reopen as long as minorities are overrepresented in CCP virus cases.

The backstory is that the county government is pissed that Portland got most of the Federal CCP virus assistance, and is basically holding the city hostage by refusing to reopen until the county government gets more bucks from Portland.

Meanwhile, a guy who owns five popular restaurants in Portland announced that he is closing his restaurants permanently. Only the beginning.

323 This being that Saturday nite ONT, and me promising MikeM a trip report to Opening Day of the casinos here in south MS, here goes --

Thursday, Day 1 of The New Reckoning, saw the advent of several coastal casinos opening for the first time in two months. I was there, live and in losing color.

I expected the first degree, and was waved into the first casino with nary a question. I was expecting the third degree, and didn't even get a warm-up.

So. I'm wandering around, looking for a likely spot to deposit my stimulus check. I'm guessing about 60% of the machines were turned off. But I'm a persistent prick.

I wound up losing about $50 over a 2 hour period, but I gained 3 beers, so it was a wash. I also had a sitdown dinner, my first in several months.

The servers seemed glad to see me, especially after I tipped them generously.

I walked thru a second casino, but didn't spend a dime, even though I had a $30 free credit offer there.

Both places were at low occupancy. I wager there were more hand sanitizing stations than at a SF gay bathhouse; not that I would know.

Anyhow, MS casinos are open for business.

342 Pok Pok is the ONLY reason I ever go to Pissland... Hope the remain open.

Haven't seen anything about Pok Pok being in trouble, but if the shutdown continues in Portland for a couple more months, I'd expect that most non-chain restaurants will go out of business.

The semi-opening is no gold mine, either - a number of restauranteurs have noted that the economics of running a restaurant where you have to maintain social distancing and close by 10 PM (apparently CCP virus is more virulent after 10 PM) are pretty problematic.

I think that is part of it, but I think the primary reason is that the graft is so much easier to collect for a huge centralized bureaucratically enable corporation. It is a really painful (and inefficient) to have to try collect from a thousand small mom and pop shops each barely making it each month, when Amazong, the WaPo (BIRM), and WallyMart each can pony up millions in campaign "donations" after receiving one simple threat from our benevolent rulers!

40+ years here and my worst accident, other than smashed fingers by hitting the wrong nail, was when I lost my balance on an improperly set up step ladder. I was only on the second step, but the ladder went one way and I went the other, landing on my left hip on the pavement wearing a full tool belt. In addition, I had a lit cutting torch in my hand when I fell.

Initially I was more worried about the torch and where it was at, until the shock wore off. Broke hip and a year to recuperate. That was 22 yrs ago and I still have the (3) 3 inch titanium screws in my hip to this day.

I said No and he waved me thru. It was a long list, and I could have honestly answered No to them all, though I didn't read them at the time.

Obviously, I ain't identifying the casino (Karen and me don't get along), but the questions are pro forma and they ain't doing any checking.

Heck, in a way, I was looking forward to having my base temperature told to me.

I'm NOT downplaying the precautions the casinos are taking; I'm just describing basic human nature. If it seems stupid, it probably IS.

At one casino the local news decided to cover on opening day, about 80% of the people in line were 70+ elderly. That's among the highest risk population, if you've been following along.

I've been watching/listening to a bunch of Mike Rowe podcasts this weekend (thanks to KT The Cob), and he describes this perfectly -- Life is the first priority; safety a distant third. No one would mine coal if the first priority was 'safety'.

Corporations get much less sympathy - so once all the rental stock is corporate, you can tighten down the rent controls and regulations to destroy the value of the rental housing, so the corporations will eventually be happy to sell out to the government,

that one is rather unexciting - early onset scoliosis, that was starting to progress. Done about 25 years ago. Really a rather amazing piece of surgery, from just below the neck down, they opened up the vertabra and implanted that rod so that as the bone healed, it is now *inside* the spinal column. It goes without saying that that part of the back doesn't bend anymore.

Airport metal detectors don't work by magnetism, though. They emit a radio frequency field, and any metallic conductor within that field will be excited by induced currents, and re-radiate, but slightly out of phase. The power required to maintain the exciting field changes slightly, and that is the signal they look for. But I think titanium is a fairly poor conductor, as far as metals go, so maybe small titanium objects deeply embedded in one's body are beneath the detection limit?

In this area it has been the independent churches that have opened first --- or refused to close in the first place. Nazarenes, Pentecostalists, etc.

There is a small Anglican (traditionalist) church we like to go to and they are open. We went last week and nearly everyone was wearing the recommended masks.
Apparently some of the congregants were scared silly by the few of us that weren't wearing one so now they have made them mandatory.

We have had 21 cases, 2 hospitalizations, and zero deaths in this area.

There's a part of me that says I'm being uncharitable, that I should be more tolerant of the fearful. But I can't help my reaction.

Yep. They were mylar tape stock coated with powdered metal instead of powdered metal oxides.

Before there were tape recorders, there were wire recorders which recorder magnetic domains onto spools of very fine steel wire.

The troule with ferrous metals and MRIs is the YUGE magnetic field, which will put forces on ferrous metals enough to rip it out of your body. We're talking 1T+ fields powered by superconducting electromagnets.

Metal detectors work by using a time varying magnetic field which induces eddy currents in all conducting metals. Think of it as a transformer. When metal is present, there is additional load on the driving circuit, which is detected.

Posted by: qdpsteve at May 24, 2020 12:21 AM (L2ZTs)

Bias on a tape recorder is pretty simple. It takes quite a strong field to "flip" a magnetic domain in the tape coating, which is a good thing, because if it didn't, tape recordings would deteriorate really fast. Bias is simply a strong, but inaudible, signal constantly applied to the recording head, to keep the magnetic domains stirred up, and random. The program you record rides on top of that, and as the tape passes out of the area of the recording head's gap, the domains are left magnetized by what the program signal was as it passed through.

One Saturday morning with a hangover, I learned the hard way not to cut a bagel with a sharp butcher knife. As the blade bit into the bagel, it went off at an angle and made a small cut on my left index finger that would have taken off the tip of my finger had not my fingernail intervened. Sonuvabitch would not stop bleeding. I was the hit of the ER that morning. I had many docs and nurses stopping by my gurney to ask me if I was the one who almost sliced off his fingertip while cutting a bagel in half. That one earned me two stitches.

561 All it takes is a moment's carelessness.

I remember once when my brother and I were using an angle grinder to cut off some heavy machinery mounting bolts that had been put in a concrete slab in the wrong places (a whole shitload of 'em.... the engineer fucked up big time).

At that moment he was using the grinder, and I was tapping the bolts with a small hand sledge to bend the slot open as it was cut so the grinding wheel wouldn't bind up.

One of the bolts came off, glowing bright red, and my brother reached over and....picked it up Barehanded.

Sizzle. Stench of burned meat.

He turned loose of it pretty fast, but the damage was done.

Despite what you might think from that, my brother wasn't actually a dumbass. He just spaced it out for a moment.

Fit and finish is generally poor, but it will often do the job, especially if it's not a job you have to do a lot.

And that sounds like a bad fit between the pawl of the ratchet, and the teeth on the edge of the column.

If I have to crawl under a car on jackstands, I like to keep that jack used in raising it there in place, but lowered just enough to fully load the jackstands. In which case if a jackstand fails, or the ground under subsides, the jack will catch the car before it falls on me.

I have a four-post drive-on hoist here at home, and the first thing I do after raising a car on it is walk around to all four posts, and make certain that all four pawls are fully seated in the notches in the posts.

This is the reverse lamp switch, right? If you unsnap the connector, and bridge the two wires inside, the reverse lamps should come on, if the ignition is on.

Leastwise, that sort of trouble-shooting used to work. On many newer cars, that sort of thing is "mediated" by the body-control computer (module), which can also flash the backup lights and beep the horn to tell you that the remote locks are successfully engaged.

Went with a lifetime buddy to Georgetown Brewery today, to buy Manny's in the can.

That probably means nothing to most of the country, but for locals around Puget Sound, that gets an actual *huh?*. why, Manny's is only on tap!

Manny's is the #1 beer on tap in King County and close in most others. They have finally canned their Lucille, Bodhizofa, Rogers, and Johnny Utah and sold it in the local stores around the area for a couple of years now. Manny's, proclaimed Manny, the co-founder and owner with Roger, of Rogers beer fame who even let his namesake be canned and sold retail, said a can of Manny's will never happen.

Well, Wuhan virus happened.

Manny and Roger's people are the bartenders, waitstaff, cooks, and managers of around here. Their friends are hurting. So, a limited run of Manny's was created and beginning today sold, with 100% of all sales going to local restaurant workers relief fund.

Not 100% of proceeds, rather 100% of sales.

17,000 cases, 68,000 6-paks , $9 a six at the brewery started selling today, and going on sale in grocery stores this Wednesday. That's well over $500,000 to be directly given to the worker bees of restaurants, who as you know have been financially devastated.

The sale started at 10am this morning. It was kind of a local event of sorts. Not a lot else to talk about, of course. Little LCD was driving on another task and was just a few miles away around noon, so he swung by. He texted the line was well over a block long, and of course social distancing was being observed, in standard city of Seattle fashion.

He bailed and got back on the freeway to his destination.

So buddy and I later drove the 20 minutes to the brewery, and the minimal line moved quickly. Between us, we bought 4 cases, and a couple of 6's of Rogers.

We bought the beer about a quarter to 5, and the stamp on the beer can said May 23, 14:37. Less than 3 hours old. Buddy took some pictures for historical purposes.

I asked the bartender how much they had sold, and she said 16 pallets with 100 cases per pallet. And that is when I found out nobody from the brewer, to the can manufacturer, to the hops growers, or anyone else took a penny. It was donated and all of it to the Joes and Janes who sling beer and food for the rest of us.

On the bottom of the Manny's 6-pak it says:

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL RESTAURANT AND BAR

I'd thought you'd never can Manny's?!..... well, we also never thought our world would be devastated by a global pandemic!

When we started canning beer at Georgetown Brewing, we figured leaving Manny's Pale Ale as a draft-only beer would help us stay connected to the foundation of our business:
the bars and restaurants that first served our beer. If you want a pint of Manny's, you have to go out, be social and support your local bar or restaurant. That's why, for our first 14 years in business, we only sold kegs. It was also our excuse to drink beer at bars and call it "work".

Now more than ever, your local bar and restaurant needs your help. They have always been there for you. The have fed you, they have provided shelter, they have kept you hydrated... and your favorite bartender has listened to every one of your stupid stories. It's time to return the favor.

100% of the profits (actually 100% of all sales direct from the brewery, and 100% of the wholesale sales portion of retail sales) from sales of Manny's cans will go to support bar and restaurant workers throughout the state of Washington.

These cans are a limited release, and when this pandemic ends, we'll see you at the bar for a pint and a cheers.

*everyone* should get all their Rxs filled at one pharmacy, especially those of us who are over 29, or have relatives who are.

medication interactions can have all levels of effects, from mild to life threatening.

a few years after i got in the biz, my parents told me about their peer who was having various issues. i told them to tell said friend to take ALL their Rx bottles to the pharmacy most convenient to them, and have them check for interactions.

Texas and Georgia have pretty much shown that, and I guess JP Morgan put together a study the also shows it worldwide.
There's no reason to expect a problem with churches unless Democrat governors issue executive orders to send covid patients into them, as they did nursing homes. Which still wouldn't be much of an issue since it isn't all that dangerous to most of us.

708 Stupid Mask story tonight. Perhaps we should compile the list.
Went to a restaurant (in Houston) that we had frequented before. Called ahead.
We got there--they wanted us to wear a mask for the 6 feet from the door to our table. Stupidity personified. And the tables were not even 6 feet apart. I complained, but wore it and the manager came to my table to scold me.
F**k that. she claimed it was the law and I told her absolutely not true--and then left. Went to another (better) restaurant.

Can't believe these dodos. We will never go there again. She should have just left it alone but the Karen control freak in her would not let her.

Meanwhile we also went to another spot--a bar no less. Not a mask i sight.

I think the mask brigade will ultimately lose business so Darwin principle will kick in.

Unbelievable how stupid people can be!

709 Not all these, laid in Office majestical,
Can sleep so soundly as the wretched slave,
Who with a body fill'd and vacant CNN mind
Gets him to rest, cramm'd with distressful Lockdowns;
Never sees horrid night, the Gouvernour from hell,
But, like a lackey, from the rise to set
Sweats in the eye of the CDC and all night

Nay, and nay be it;

This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Memorial Day shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his mask with me
Shall be my brother; be he not socially distanced,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen called Karen in America now-a-fret
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold themselves cheap, and unessential whiles any speaks
Who were not Free on Memorial day.

716 I went to town yesterday...first time in three weeks. I thought we were mostly over the mask nonsense and the peddlers' area at the junction was packed. Where you may usually see four or five cars at the most there were fifty. Vendors were parked cheek by jowel and social distancing was a laughable impossibility. Not a mask on the lot.

Then I went to the high end supermarket. That's where all the masks were...on dutiful sheeple studiously following the arrows taped to the floor.

No, I did not wear a mask. Yes, I went the wrong way down the aisles. But I left $400 behind, restocking the new refrig. My conscience is assuaged.

718 i was at a grocery store OUTSIDE the LA City limits the other day, so immune.

i walked in, mask-less, past store employees, who said nothing.

i talked to store employees whilst shopping, who said nothing.

i checked out, with my cashier saying nothing, until the harridan at the next register went apeshit from behind her plexiglass shield 5-6 meters away.

"you have to have a mask" Karen said.

"i'm US Army Retired, and have a life time exemption from having to do stupid shit because some panicked moron thinks i should."

she was not pleased, but i walked the F out with my shit.

Stasi Karens indeed!

I have to say I detest the masks...find it very hard to breathe when I do wear them (in the grocery store only, when I remember to bring it with me--mostly b/c there are some older folks in the store)

The longer this goes on the less I want to wear the d**n thing.

And hell to the no will I wear one indoors when I get up to Virginia later this summer. Gov Blackface can come get me...

Posted by: groovygirl at May 24, 2020 04:38 AM (ybC9u)

722 Way to go, redc1c4!

I felt sorry for the guy at the dispensary. He was wearing a mask that was two sizes too big and kept slipping down over his nose. I told him I didn't care if he took it off. "Oh, I can't do that," he said. "The boss says we have to wear them and they watch on closed circuit TV to make sure we do."

I did not encounter any Karens and I got the funny feeling people who were wearing masks were a little envious of my refusal to knuckle under. After all, I'm in the high-risk group.

I was happy to get back into the hills. If I do it right I won't have to go back to town for another three weeks.

Wait until it's 95 degrees in the shade, with 85% humidity and no breeze. People will be passing out from heat stroke AND lack of oxygen.

I hate the masks because not only can I not breathe, my friggin' glasses fog up. Then I can't read any labels in the grocery store and that's how I ended up with a box of sucky instant pudding.

I saw a commercial on tv today for masks, the first time I saw one They had people wearing masks doing their own friggin' yard work. That's a big HELL TO THE NO! for me.

Stasi Karens indeed!

I admit I only edited the two concepts together, but that's what I'm going to call them on the innertubes and in person from now on. Because it's true. You don't want to be called a Stasi Karen, then don't be a Stasi Karen.

Good deal.
I find it amusing that the hurricanes give people a 2 week window to prepare, and some people still get caught short.

Midwest, death winds drop from the sky, sometimes in the middle of the night, and you have a 10 minute warning from a siren 3 miles away that you can't hear if the windows are closed.

Posted by: Bruce at May 24, 2020 05:08 AM (vd8XM)

738 HAHAHA

"North Carolina has reported its highest one-day spike in new COVID-19 cases, a development that comes a day after the state entered its second phase of re-opening."

I love it. The virus takes around 5 (and up to 14) days to incubate, but oh noes, we had our highest spike after two days of a half-assed re-opening.

Clearly we need mail-in voting!!!

etc., etc.

Letting your kids swim in water all day while you are distracted by facebook or napping = low risk

Loading your kids up in the SUV and driving on the roads where 40K people die in 5,000,000+ crashes every year = low risk

We are so f*cked.

That takes all the fun our of it!!

Wife has something on her phone that yells out a warning. I look at the SAME radios and see if I can program it just for tornado type conditions. I see that you can program some of them for specific counties.
I had a weather alert go off on my phone at 2 AM one time to let me know that there was a River Flood Warning.
That's nice, but I live 12 miles from the river, and unless it's high enough to get to the second floor, let me sleep.

So I turned off the notifications.

Thanks for the idea, Jean!

And RickZ--it is already in the 90's here. One of the reasons that I sent off a torrent of letters to the governor, AG, lt. gov and my state rep as soon as the child Karen Judge here (Lina HIdalgo) was to prevent her nonsensical "order" from taking force.

It is actually dangerous to wear these darn things all day--as we all know--b/c they limit the oxygen we get. That was one reason why the Stasi Karen in the first restaurant we went to irritated me so much--b/c she tried to tell me that the mask is required--which is not true in TX. Abbott nullified required mask orders in his reopening guidance.

771 Creeper,
Doubt that the lack of oxygen that accompanies mask wearing is well known. There was a story about someone that had a car wreck from wearing the mask all day (and in the car, incredibly).
CEO of one of the Fortune 500's making masks has emphasized this issue.

The thing is so ridiculous--wearing them outside is wildly unnecessary. I suspect it will gradually go away as people tire of them, and realize that they aren't cleaning or sterilizing them either which compromises the usefulness (if any--most are not well fitted so do nothing for either the wearer or those around him or her).

Signing off all--have a great early AM! Thank goodness for the vets that fought for us.
