Saturday Morning Coffee Break

coffeebreak 52320.jpg

***

It's the unofficial start of summer. Enjoy your weekend by not running with sharp objects, not pissing in the pool, not pulling the 'ettes hair and being nice to one another.

8 for Grammie, from last thread:

363 Unfortunately our fight right now is focused on the church leadership. They are the ones preventing services. Our plans already have the approval of the mayor. We have a great plan that meets all the state guidelines. But the leadership is hiding under the beds, re-naming themselves Karen. They are completely and utterly hopeless. Rev is resorting to going privately to homes, praying with each member, and serving them individual communion. He will not be singing hymns however. Nobody wants to listen to that.
Posted by: grammie winger at May 23, 2020 09:03 AM (lwiT4)

Your problem is analogous to the problem that Trump, and all of us, have had with dealing with the GOP-e. Our worst enemies are actually located in positions of power, on our own side. It's why there has to be an internal cleansing, an overthrow of all of those in existing positions of power, before anything meaningful can be done.

Why do those in power care so little, and act this way? Because they're all just about collecting a nice paycheck and building up a pension. They've got theirs, why do they give a damn about anyone else?

This exact kind of thing is why Jesus fought to undermine the Pharisees, and why they hated him enough to want to kill him. At least you're in good company.

27 The "ventilators" were the McGuffin of the moment about a month ago - remember that? Now it turns out the Ventilators never did much good at all, and that we had more than we actually needed from the very start. That's why we can give a bunch away now, because the emergency ones we built were never more than a pile of junk to be dumped in a warehouse somewhere.

But there's still some people out in the MSM pretending like they were a real thing to be concerned about.

72 Re the White House briefings: more projection. the 'reporters' haven't been real journalists in decades. they have done exactly what the complainer has projected onto Kayleigh. They spew pre-scripted gotchas in order to play to the cameras. They push their narratives for the cameras. it has been all about that for years and years. and we have finally got a president who understands the game, and who has found someone who is better at the game than they are.

85 Good Saturday morning, horde!

Jewells, prayers for your son. I used grammie's prayer, because it so lovely and eloquent. Some of you people pray some really nice prayers.

I know God doesn't care if my prayers are more pedestrian, but I kinda do.

Grammie, prayers for your ministry, also.

And for mercy on all of us, and that we come out of all of this stronger.

even though, according to Minnesota's own numbers, 663 of those deaths occurred in Nursing Homes. One would think that telling Nursing Home patients that they shouldn't go on the rides at the State Fair would be enough.

well in all seriousness, everyone knows what this is about. Minneapolis people don't really give a shit about the State Fair, it's the rural population that looks forward to it so much. This is a great way for the Minneapolis liberal crowd to shit all over those cro-magnon MAGA rubes out in the rest of the state.

If you want to see a truly painfully maudlin rendition, look up the version on Youtube done by Judi Dench. Actually, don't.

There IS one version of this song that is perfect, although you can't find it anymore. (At least I can't) Years and years ago, NFL Films did a tribute to Joe Namath's career, set to this song, all with film highlights. "Me here at last on the ground, you in mid-air" is paired with a shot of Namath laying flat on his back, with a Big Mean Linebacker flying through the air, about to squash him. It was absolutely hilarious, I'd love to find it again.

Ground root of the endive plant, I think?

I always wondered about the proportions. Denver had stores with ground chicory (and I think Whole Foods does here). I was always tempted to buy the regular dark roast and add my own chicory, but had no idea of the ratio to use. And it would not have saved me any money anyhow.

Sure -- but coffee without it tastes either listless or is (in the case of espresso) far too strong for me.

Admittedly it's an acquired taste. In Denver I brought some chicory coffee to work one week, figuring to give my co-workers a treat. An hour later I heard somebody asking the receptionist, "Is there something wrong with the coffee maker?"

Roasted grain, I think, not chicory.

I remember there was a protest about the company discontinuing it some years ago, but (not being Mormon) I don't remember whether the protest managed to save it.

198 G'day Horde.

When I encounter a real prayer, like Grammie's above for Jewells's son, it really floors me. I almost have a sensation of the good being done. Appreciate being able to read and join in.

Prayers for uplifting the spirit, heart and hope, seems t'me, would tend to be more up-top of Deity's to-do list than requests for, say, unearned material bounty or violent revenge, which go in the "needs interpretation" bucket.

Except for recitation (e.g. "Our Father who art..."), my 'praying' always seems to me to come out as whiny, griping, begging, materialistic, selfish wishcasting. You know, violating all the techniques of effective praying, much as my stupid life decisions violated all the techniques of effective living. This, I presume, has some part in inefficacious outcomes, spiritual and material. Or as RH might say, bad luck.

On the plus side, this has me well-trained in accepting "no, or, at least, not now" as the seeming answer to all my pathetic pleadings. So - oh goody - areas for improvement. After the struggles, I'm just left with this:

Okay, Lord, your will > mine. Thanks for everything!

.
.
.

A little Fatherly help all 'round would not be unwelcome, though. On earth as it is in Heaven.

Posted by: Skip at May 23, 2020 10:21 AM (ZCEU2)

212 So... apropos of nothing, i'm going to jump in with an idea i'm toying with.

Four "modes" of public persuasion, or call it "propaganda" if you like:

1: tell a truth to make people believe a truth
2: tell a lie to make people believe a truth
3: tell a truth to make people believe a lie
4: tell a lie to make people believe a lie

1 is usually ineffective - everyone simply assumes you're lying by default
2 is fairly common - embellishment, hyperbole, etc.
3 is very much like Soviet propaganda, cleverly using an unassailable fact to trick people into a faulty conclusion
4 can either be mere lazy barbarism aided by mass hysteria, or Himmler's "Big Lie", depending on whether or not you expect the people to actually accept the lie.

I'm sure some scholar or another has explored this territory, i'm just not sure where to start looking...

241 Four "modes" of public persuasion, or call it "propaganda" if you like:

I was thinking along these lines this am as I was praying. It occurred to me last night that Jesus said he came to give us life abundantly. I was a little depressed because our all wise gov ( Whitmer) decided last night to extend our sentence to June 19. I was praying to not feel so overwhelmed by the hurdles she is putting in front of everybody. Her will as opposed to good will. I'm glad that other people are also thinking about how this lie-all powerful government got started.

Did not have a good day yesterday. My sister sent me a text with all kinds of cheery news about seeing her grandkids in person while wearing a mask the whole time and I burst into tears. I ended up sending a lengthy reply about how I thought this was all bullshit and I could not get together with her and my other sister if we were going to have to be masked. How I don't think like them and I couldn't pretend any longer.

The showing on my house was fantastic but they didn't make an offer. The painter wants a fortune to repaint the siding on the side of my house because it is crap.
I am going to end up taking an offer below what it should be because I am alone and can't wait to get out of here.
And....the day stretches in front of me with nothing to do but walk in the park.
Trying to be an optimist here but having a very hard time of it.

260 conceptually, Zardoz was a fantastic movie that addressed the question of what happens when one follows the Nietzschean view that God has been displaced by reason, and that man must become like gods to deal with the release of that control: instead they create their own control through the Tabernacle, turn their backs on greatness, and devolve into a petty elite, locked in cultural stasis, jealously guarding their status among their peers, and holding the rest of the world in blind, ignorant serfdom.

I think the conclusion of the movie is stupid, but the idea is quite interesting that, if Man has killed God, should Mankind then set themselves up as gods in His place, it's destruction is inevitable as well.

272 on caffeine and coffee, there are actually coffee varieties that are naturally lower in caffeine than others

firstly, arabica is lower than robusta

some foreign coffee companies also list caffeine content/level

dark roast vs light roast - the difference is minor
dark is more dehydrated, so by weight it has slightly more
but it's also fluffier, so by volume it has less

dark has more flavor though, so ppl.tend to use lesswhich means less caffeine

Please tell your son that this too shall pass. You can tell him the tale of Insomniac, who was very, very depressed, and without a job for a long while.

Yet he pushed forward, and finally got a good job. He's been there 6 weeks, and has at least 2 paychecks.

Happier futures are possible.

316 I really don't get the Biden situation. He is clearly in the early stages of dementia. What are they doing?

I can only think they need him to cover for someone else as long as possible, so there can be no significant oppo against their "real" candidate.

probably beneficial, right?

I did have a touch of sympathy for him at the beginning of all this because he's an old man, and obviously suffering some kind of obvious diminished capacity mentally. The fact that his wife and others were pushing him into this presidency run when it's clear he's not well enough or fit enough for it made me feel sorry for him. But it didn't last because I know who he is. And what he is. And what he's done over the years.

347 So passing by the local Beaumont Hospital on my way back from my grocery pick-up, I see the huge letters in front of the Hospital spelling out "Heroes Work Here!"

At first I just rolled my eyes. Then I had a thought... (no, I didn't hurt myself)...

It strikes me as wrong to be putting those signs up.

I mean, you don't pass by military bases and see them put up signs saying "Heroes train and work here!"

In fact, you don't see or hear any military members call themselves heroes at all. *Other* people call them heroes.

But it just strikes me as completely lame for groups of people now going around calling themselves heroes and advertising it.

Our cottage industry (garage and yard sales) is up and running in various configurations ranging from masks and distancing to ignoring the strictures imposed.

Attendance is definitely back to normal, people are simply returning to their lives, with no fanfare.
But our local governments are cowering a lot yet.

Yours truly got tested for Covid19 Thursday at a mobile center, by the swab method. Had to mightily suppress a sneeze at swab insertion. No results thus far.

I wish I had the option. Mandatory inside stores. Supposed to be mandatory outside but most ignoring that except I literally see people in cars wearing them. Supposedly they are going to be mandatory at beaches.
That is what set me off yesterday with my sisters. Both live a good 1 1/2 away and one of them lives near a lake. When I told them how I was feeling yesterday, they suggested we get together at the lake but wouldhave to wear masks and sit 6 ft apart. May as well facetime. At least I can see the expression on their faces.
