Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: '03 Springfield! [Weasel]And before a bunch of you email me to point it out, yes, I did incorrectly say windage instead of elevation when discussing the rear leaf sight! Originally published in the November 25, 2018 Gun Thread - we recycle! One of the all-time greatest topics for internet forum debate involves the question of the '03 Springfield and 'low number' receivers. Introduced in 1903, the United States Rifle, Caliber .30, Model 1903 was the standard U.S. infantry rifle until the M1 Garand came along in 1936, and the development and use of the '03 Springfield is extremely interesting. For today, however, we're going to talk a little bit about metallurgy and wartime production. The U.S. entered WWI with insufficient rifles to arm the troops so production had to be increased and that meant adding shifts at the arsenals. At the time, the heat treatment of the receiver steel was controlled thru visual inspection by armory workers. When the steel glowed a certain color it was deemed to have reached the proper temperature, an obviously subjective procedure. It was later determined the actual temperature of steel produced in this manner might vary by several hundred degrees, depending on whether it was a day or night shift, or a clear vs. cloudy day, and resulted in potentially over-cooked and brittle steel. A relatively small number of the receivers failed during use and injured soldiers which prompted an investigation. Compounding the problem was, by design, the head of the .30-06 cartridge is unsupported by the chamber for about 1/8th inch. Some receiver failure incidents were suspected to have been caused by defective cartridge head brass and even others attributed to the use of incorrect ammunition altogether. The Army Officer leading the investigation, Julian hostaer, incorporated the findings into the book bearing his name, hostaer's Notebook, which is highly recommended. As described by hostaer, the investigation and testing continued into the 1920's when a sample of 26 low number receivers were subjected to twice the rated pressure without failure. Whatever the cause, about a dozen soldiers received serious injuries resulting from receiver failures. The manufacturing process was improved in February 1918 at Springfield Armory around S/N: 800000, and at Rock Island Arsenal at S/N: 285507 with the installation of pyrometers in the forges. But what to do with approximately 1 million 'suspect' receivers then in use? The Army decided to leave them in regular service and only retire them as they came through the arsenal for repair, and the Marines decided to simply keep using them until someone handed them something else to shoot. And the great Springfield low receiver serial number issue was born. My rifle is S/N 379145 made at the Springfield Armory in 1909, but with a barrel date of November 1944. That's right, the receiver made in 1909 is matched to a barrel made 35 years later. It's a rifle which was fired to the point of wearing out at least one barrel, and perhaps several barrels, before concluding its military service in 1944. Do I shoot it? Of course I do. It was made in 1909, well before WWI and the increase in wartime production which many think contributed to the problem. The CMP and most of the rest of the world declare this rifle 'unsafe to shoot' based on the low number. I suspect it may have been a USMC rifle given it was never removed from service, and if it's good enough for the Marines then it's good enough for me. I ususlly hand load for it using surplus brass, 150gr bullets, and IMR4895 staying on the lower end of the velocity curve - around 2650fps. The load for .30 cal military ammunition has fluctuated over the years, but in 1944 the new M2 Ball used a 152gr flat base bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2805fps. Remember, these rifles weren't treated like some sort frail and fragile item 100 years ago, but rather continued to be used until they were worn out and then removed from service, or replaced by something else, a fact that is usually omitted from discussion on low serial number rifles. Am I recommending you shoot a low number receiver? No. I'm just telling you that I shoot mine, and the reasons I think it's OK for me to do so with my particular rifle. The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy Also recommended: The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle 4th edition, Poyer hostaer's Notebook, Julian hostaer There are many many others, and countless websites devoted to the development and long history of these wonderful rifles. Next we have a 1911 front sight repair project from our pal Jesse in DC: These are the pics of me repairing the front sight on my 1911. An easy repair I guess, but I was surprised at how hard the sight part was. That probably explained the bad previous staking job. I did not want to damage the slide, so I used some green locktite, the stud and bearing mount stuff. I think that should be sufficient, but if not I will try to find the official tool to stake it Cowboy Action Shooting Here's an article from American Grit sent in by our good buddy Mr. C.B. Dildo. The article itself is on a form of shooting competition we've never discussed, Cowboy Action Shooting, and it features a girl!!! Have any of you participated in this type of competitive shooting? Not "less than 800,000." I guess it all depends on the scale of production. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at May 17, 2020 07:18 PM (cfSRQ) 22

My '03 Springfield is a low number in as issued condition from 1917. It was used for decades before I got it. The arrogant assumption from a lot of shooters that these rifles are widow makers has always annoyed me. The numbers don't back up that issue but that doesn't stop people and their 'knowledge'.
I don't use it for regular loads anymore because I have two other rifles for the cartridge: a M17 and a Garand. The '03 turns out to be a superb reduced power cast bullet shooter, good out to 150 or 200 yards with iron sights. Posted by: JTB at May 17, 2020 07:36 PM (7EjX1) 56

Has a Hatcher hole on the receiver and is a great shooter. As I get older and start to sell off my collection, this one will stay. Now that we're all here, I have dreadful news to report.
Having obtained access to a range at a secure, undisclosed location, I was finally able to test out an Astra 300. This is a rather obscure Spanish firearm chambered in .380 auto from the late 1920s. The Condor Legion in Spain was equipped with them and once Germany gained overland acces to Spain, imported something like 80,000 of these. They go for at least $1,000 if they have the Waffenampt mark. Anyways, with great trepidation I got to finally sample this fine example of Spanish craftsmanship. Those who drop in on the book thread know I'm a Spanish Civil War obsessive, so this was a Big Moment, since the weapon in question was built in 1931 so was likely a veteran of that conflict. I fired it, and it was seriously jumpy, because pure blowback. The mag came loose, and I realized my pinky had hit the button, so I adjusted my grip. It was a handful, but still cool, and then...plastic. Plastic coming out of the magazine well when I switched magazines. *The grips were disintegrating!!!* So very very sad. This week was the great Colt SP-1 vs. Springfield SAR-4800 FAL in 5.56mm shoot off. No need to discuss the Colt, it is basically a M16A1 with a semi only fire control group. Great rifle.
The SAR-4800 in 5.56mm, however is a funny story. Made in Brazil, Springfield imported them back in the day and it had a funny bell shaped faux flash suppressor and thumbhole stock which the previous owner thankfully dispensed with. I believe about 700 were brought into the country. It is basically a standard FAL but with a 5.56mm barrel and bolt face cut to 5.56mm. Imbel made and solid as a tank. It takes standard AR mags thanks to a welded in mag well. The Brazilian police and some military units still use some type of this FAL to my knowledge. The SAR is a few pounds heavier than the Colt, but I didn't mind. The Colt just flat out shoots and is very easy to handle. The SAR ran just fine but is a little bit of work to do reloads and the sights are just ok. With the extra weight, the recoil is negligible with the SAR and the gas system let me tune it down until I got it just right. The Colt edged out the SAR out from 100/200/300/400/500/600 yards but the SAR felt better the more I shot it. I gave the nod to the Colt but the SAR more than held it's own. In addition to the platforms like the '03 Springfield, Garand, M1917, etc., the 30-06 is an wonderfully versatile cartridge, especialy in a bolt action. It can be loaded with a 310 round ball and pinch of pistol powder for a gallery load. Or reduced power cast bullet rounds. It can handle little 110 grain bullets or much heavier projectiles. It works with cast or jacketed bullets. And it can function with old style, readily available powders like Unique, Red Dot, 4895, and many more.

Ok, I went and checked. The Cowboy shooting I am familiar with is shooting at targets from horse back at a flat out run.
Standing on the ground. eh. Hi, Ben Had! Mounted Cowboy Action Shooting looks like a ton of fun but the horsey part of the gear is kind of a blocker for a lot of us. At least you only need to feed the guns when you take them out to play with them. And their droppings can be recycled easier too. Posted by: Bob the Bilderberg at May 17, 2020 08:24 PM (qc+VF) 160
Back when we were ruining (for collector purposes) a lot of M98 Mausers by "sporterizing" them, the 8mm/06 round came into vogue. Simply put, rechamber a 7.92X57 with a 3006 reamer, fireform the 06 brass, and load with 8mm bullets. It was actually a good cartridge, and you find examples out there today.

Gubz! Shooting from horseback sounds very cool. If I had a horse, knew how to ride, knew how to ride and shoot, and had a place locally that did it, I'd do it. So. I've actually never seen cowboy action live. I know many participants spend far more on their duds (authentic reproductions of clothes and gear) than on their shootin' irons. I bagged my first deer at 15 years old with an '03 Springfield I borrowed from my great uncle. Great rifle. He collected guns, so he had several.
When I was in the Army in Alaska I spent some of my off-duty time at a place called Alaskaland in Fairbanks. I played a gunslinger for the tourists. I wore cowboy clothing and had a low-slung quick-draw holster with a .22 caliber RG single actions revolver. We used blanks, of course. But we had fast-draw competitions where we would fire wax loads at balloons. Great fun. And free beer. Posted by: Elric at May 17, 2020 08:30 PM (oSDkQ) 173

Ok, quick range report, and MoMe impromptu report and I'll start reading the thread:
This week was not as great as last week's range trip. I was trying triple taps and my muscle memory does NOT want to go from double taps to triple. Nope, nope, nope. Terrible group sizes and ragged shot strings. Over and over I'd get two good bangs, then a hesitation and a trigger jerk. I suck at it. So, more training needed. I did wind things up with some slow-ish fire where one more trigger jerk ruined a 50 shot string into the 10 ring by giving me a flyer into the 9. All of the above was with the CZ P-07, with the kadet adapter and 50 full power 9mm rounds at the end. I then put 50 more rounds, this time in .380 out of the very mild recoiling Glock 42. I was aiming for eye level and putting just about everything into the nose and mouth of the target. Still not what someone would like to receive lead but it's odd how far off I was hitting from where I was aiming. I blame the very very small grip of the G42, which may be making me push the rounds down as I fire and try to keep my fingers from falling off the pistol. The Nurse is far more accurate with her G42. Grump, thanks for the Field Manual language re elevation adjustment fix on the M1 you gave this week. I looked around a bit in addition to that, and still not quite sure about the proper "fix". Problem: elevation knob on M1 coming loose.
I could easily get a whole elevator knob, or both knobs, to simply replace it, and also there are spares to "repair" the pinion. One question - terminology. The "pinion" is the elevation knob and its parts? The FM instruction you provided puzzles me a bit - bit about "respreading" the end of the pinion. Guessing that's something not visible, inside the elevator knob assembly? Posted by: rhomboid at May 17, 2020 08:33 PM (El6T/) 183

Should be shooting this week. My O3 is an 03A3, 1943 production. It was rebuilt after the war by7 Rock Island Arsenal. When my dad died 6 years ago, he had 2 03A3s, this one and a nice sporter he built as a young guy ca 1960. By nice, I mean well gunsmithed, beautiful blueing, etc. That one went to my brother in Canada since he hunts and I do not. Thanks for the gun thread, and the video about the 1903 rifle. It brings back memories of my childhood. Back in the mid-60s, my Dad bought a government surplus rifle. It came wrapped in brown paper covered in some grease like substance. I remember him cleaning it up, then removing the wood up front, refinishing the stock and having a scope mounted. That became the hunting rifle that he, I, and my brother took hunting for antelope, deer, and elk. Got an antelope at age 14 with it. What I remember most is that it kicked like a mule with 180 grain hunting cartridges.
I was hoping some day to inherit it but I guess my Dad gave his guns away a few years back. Oh well. A lot of great memories of hunting antelope north of Pathfinder reservoir. Posted by: Pod Hamp at May 17, 2020 08:36 PM (5+wyi) 191

Thanks, Weasel. Great, as always.
Whenever the topic of the '03 comes up, I tiresomely repost this link to the sniper scene in 'Saving Private Ryan'. There are two notable aspects (at least). One is that the rifle is fitted with the later Unertle 8x scope, rather than one of the earlier-used Weavers. Prior to the canoe accident, a close friend had one of those. The second thing is the fact that the guy behind the gun is left handed. Watch him operating the bolt. I would *really* like to know if the screenwriters purposely made that the case. Almost certainly so, but aside from folk like us, who would notice, or care? Moreover, who would add such a quirky aspect? Interesting. 169 Back when surplus rifles were dirt cheap and in abundance, there were a lot of things done that didn't make much sense. This was one of the better ideas. Speaking of sporter military rifles, between ww1 and ww2, large numbers of 03s became sporters, some very nicely by high end shops. One of the first variations of the 03 to be surplused out was the Mk1, with ejection cutout for the Pedersen device. You would occasionally see a 20s or 30s vintage Springfield sporter with that cutout on the left side filled in.

I think I've seen in WWII (Great Patriotic War)-era training materials that Red Army soldiers firing from cover/trenches were instructed to do the left-handed bolt thing, to keep some of their sight-orientation between shots. I've tried it, it helps a bit, but requires good habits - like moving your rear thumb out of the way to avoid being mashed by the bolt.

Had the whole complex to myself, week a go today - it just re-opened to the public week ago tomorrow. I discovered that weighing every charge for my 30-06 M1 food, vs. not doing so, made no apparent difference (translation: operator error cancels out any actual improvement in consistency). Fair enough. Saves time. Also, both of my 15-round M1 carbine mags are actually 13-round mags. They both jack the 14th/15th rounds high, nose above the chamber, in repeated testing. 10-rounders work fine as usual, up to 13 rounds no problem. Must be mag springs are a bit weak. I figure the rear sight on an M1 Carbine is staked (windage-wise)? My AutoOrdnance repro needs the rear sight tweaked just a scooch to center it up, but I don't think I'll be getting into the staking business.

Then went up top to the big boy range. No problem at 350 and 528; I could hear the steel. But beyond that, I can't get the rifle settled down fast enough to be my own spotter. Also, both of my 15-round M1 carbine mags are actually 13-round mags. They both jack the 14th/15th rounds high, nose above the chamber, in repeated testing. 10-rounders work fine as usual, up to 13 rounds no problem. Must be mag springs are a bit weak. Figure I'll have to live with it.

Hairyback, the elevation on the rear sights (of the adjustable sight version) goes up to 300 yds on the carbine.
It's basically a 110g 357 magnum round @1900 FPS, so 300 yds is getting "out there", at least for real accuracy, I'm guessing. Still wouldn't recommend trying to catch one at that range, however. Posted by: rhomboid at May 17, 2020 09:03 PM (El6T/) 250

What's up with Canada? Can't they afford a half dozen F-16s? Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 17, 2020 08:58 PM (gd9RK) --- No. They bought Australia's cast-off first-gen F/A-18s so they can cannibalize them for their fleet. Their aircraft are decrepit and they have a pilot shortage, but plenty of money to send to the ChiComs for medical aid. Also, they can legally import Chinese firearms that are banned in the US. Wait, did you mean MY 1911? I traded putting a heater core in a Volvo 940 for it. The sights that are on it now were on it when I got it. The "micro" rear sight is the same as was fitted to NM guns in the early 60s. It had the ugliest oversized target grips on it money could buy. Replaced them with the GI parts. Someone had staked the frame. Arrrgghh. The reason I bought the Kuhnhousen books was to work on fixing it. I finally got the slide to where it slides properly. The recoil spring was from a howitzer, and I replaced it with one that came with it. It may still be too stiff, but it shoots OK.

I bagged my first deer at 15 years old with an '03
Springfield I borrowed from my great uncle. Posted by: Elric at May 17, 2020 08:30 PM (oSDkQ) I bagged my first at the same age, it was with a 20 guage side by side. I used a slug with a non rifled barrel but the deer did not seem to mind. My second deer was with the same weapon a year later almost to the date. . Other hunters laughed at me as they had super slug barrels and scopes. I had a bead front sight. The two i got were boon and crockett worthy imo. "One was a six and the other an 8 but the racks were as symmetrical as you could draw up. It was luck about the racks. I realize many more successful hunters than I get button bucks, fork horns, irregulars, etc. I was just in the right place at the right time. But I did spend years in the woods with nary even a shot before that happened. I have only shot at two deer in my life. I quit because getting one is much more of a pain in the ass than not getting one. Posted by: Quint at May 17, 2020 09:18 PM (hHxp2) 277

Late, as usual. Nice thread and I've REALLY got to get a 1903. But, as a quick in and out comment (have to go shortly) -- Well, I am in my new digs in VA and much needs done, furniture, internet connections, etc., etc. No major items, just... stuff.
Weasel, nice thread and I'll read everything tomorrow, and soon should be able to get interesting 1911 stuff to you for consideration. My exile in VA begins! McGyver, out Posted by: McGyver at May 17, 2020 09:35 PM (hODab) 308

i just looked at a video of the crash: there were two ejection plumes, so they both got out, but very low. local news said it looked like the woman plowed into a tree.
likely they were too low to get a full shute before reaching the ground. the plae just pitches up, rolls left and then dives. ugly. /hand salute Posted by: redc1c4 at May 17, 2020 09:44 PM (5kusT) 322

340 It looks like the recoil from the Garand is more severe than the Springfield. How do the feel to you?
Posted by: Braenyard at May 17, 2020 10:09 PM (DGSWO) ------- I'd say so, and that was exactly the same ammunition. The Garand has more straight back recoil while the Springfield seems to have more muzzle rise. I haven't weighed them but I suspect the Garand is a little heavier, too. I guess it's the difference between a semi-auto and a bolt gun. Great observation! Posted by: Weasel at May 17, 2020 10:14 PM (MVjcR) 343
That wasn't plastic, but I bet Bakelite
Posted by: Anna Puma at May 17, 2020 07:54 PM (9kruo) Bakelite is one of the first, and best plastics. Still in use. They made gun grips from hard rubber for many years, and that stuff does deteriorate. Of course, it possible the Spanish made a bad batch of Bakelite, I guess. A comment from our pal Dr. Jeyi:
I haven't carefully read through the entire comments threads yet, but all the very low S/N '03 Springfields were originally chambered for 30-03 cartridge, and only after the 30-06 cart was adopted, were rebarrelled for the new 30-06 round. I believe all or nearly all of them were so upgraded. I bought one like that in 1964 or so from Numrich Arms then in W. Hurley NY, and while the receiver said "Springfield Armory 1903", the barrel was stamped "Rock Island 1906". I later acquired a very nice peep sight designed specifically for the pre- 03-A3s like mine, but the gunsmith at Numrich advised me that it was a bad idea to tap and drill a very low S/N '03 receiver, so it was never changed. The bolt isn't original for certain, so the rifle didn't have much value as a high end collectors item. I gave it to my son & now living in SE Georgia twenty years ago. He still has it and shoots it only rarely, but never with any problems. If one of you crazies/obsessives out there make him an offer he can't refuse, he might go for it.
