Happy Saturday! Sarah Hoyt was up early this morning. She checked out some of the recent news from the Babylon Bee for us:

Governor Newsom Orders Ballots To Be Sent To Every Cemetery In State

Reminder: Adolf Hitler Also Wanted To Go Outside And Do Things

Democrats Promise To Chew Up Cash, Tenderly Regurgitate It Into Mouths Of Voters

Hillary Clinton Suggests That Americans Vote For President By Email

Several States Issue Orders Requiring People To Run Around In Giant Hamster Balls

Sarah:

All right, then. The Babylon Bee is now America's Paper of Record. More truth there than in any other paper in the US.

Music and Dance

Steven Hayward posts a new number by Remy, and a couple of relevant oldies.

Time to get movin'?

Jumpin' on Saturday Night

Social distancing:

Mr. and Mrs. Hoofer at home. Your home life been like this lately?

Hope you have a good weekend. Maybe you should get some sun. Check out the Gardening and Puttering Thread later.

8 Yes... it is apparent from the numbers from sunny states compared to northern states, the death rates and infection rates are markedly different.

California - with the massive number of Chinese visitors early on should have seen much higher rates.. but never did.. why? The sun!

Well, just got a note that said the 2020 Houston World Series of Dog Shows has been cancelled. Not just four days of all-breed shows but also the specialties and Group shows, including our Houston Area Hound Association show.

I'm not surprised, but I'm sad. Less for myself but there have been no shows since March. A lot of handlers, handlers' assistants and vendors are really hurting right now.

On the one hand, a lot of the fancy is in a vulnerable age group. On the other hand, if there's a segment of the population that has probably developed immunity to every disease there is, it's the fancy.

39 And frankly, it shouldn't bother me, but I hate it when anyone other than baseball uses the term "World Series."

Back in the before time, when I went into work (instead of work coming in to me), I didn't want to give the work computer any inkling of what kinds of things I looked at online, so if I wanted to check the nooz of the day, I used Googly nooz.

Their site is separated into sections, and you can click on the little thing that says "Sports," and you'll get wall to wall Kobe Bryant info. But then if you clicked on the MLB tab within sports, you'd get slightly less Kobe Bryant nooz, and some of it had to do with actual baseball, instead of just the rotten cheating Asstroes.

But then INSIDE THE BASEBALL TAB, you'd get stories about the World Series of Poker.

Ho Lee Fook, people, I want to hurt you so bad.

42 Here's something that's crazy-insane-nutzoid: Testing Vitamin-D level is not one of the standard tests of your blood when you get a routine physical.

About 5 years ago I began asking my doc to order a Vitamin-D test along with the standard annual test, because I had read studies that showed a correlation between Vitamin-D deficiency and a variety of physical and mental disorders.

First year, my Vitamin-D was low (technically insufficient I guess). I began taking 5,000 IU of D every day. Got me into the suffcient range, where I've stayed. But I have to remind my doc to order that test every year. Insane.

Imagine if you are a politician and/or bureaucrat, and the means of opposing you is within your grasp to limit.

In other words, suppose you are Hong Kong or Paris, suppose you want to produce an "Arab Spring" or Occupoop Wall Street. You know, in order to change the system, to bring the oppressors to the table (at least).

And the oppressors are telling you to stay home... for your own good.

Do you think the oppressors will hesitate to use this type of power, just because it's, you know, RIGHT THERE IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS that they can't?

And that's the other thing, the Bill of Rights isn't the government GIVING us these rights, it's the government acknowledging we have them.

So I get sick and tired of the petty arguments about what states and local politicians can and can't do, because they're not federal.

If the government can give them to you, or take them away, they're not rights.

You and I are saying the same thing, so I'll just note one more thing.

It's no accident the left is big on selling the idea of all sorts of other rights that aren't actually, you know, rights.

The list is long and getting longer. We have a "right" to privacy, we have a right to be heard, we have a right to being safe in public spaces, a right to health care, a right to be treated the same as everybody else, a right to income equality, and on and on and on.

Calling these things "rights" just confuses the straights, who now have no actual concept of what is and isn't a right, and where said rights come from.

113 Some slightly good news from the People's Republic of Illinois:

A local non-profit agency for people with disabilities that I follow on Facebook posted a copy of an official notice from the IL Dept. of Public Health, clarifying that persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities (autism, Down Syndrome, etc.) CAN have a support person with them if they are admitted to a hospital. If they are hospitalized for a prolonged period of time, they can have two or more designated support persons, but only one can be with them at any given time. The support person must be tested for/screened for any symptoms of COVID. You can have a backup support person to step in if the first one gets infected. (This is something my husband and I had been worried about in the, probably unlikely, event our autistic daughter should get sick with the WuFlu.)

There had been some confusion on that point and apparently, some people who had Down's or autistic (adult) kids admitted to hospitals were being told they could not accompany them. So at least that has been cleared up. However, this is the kind of information that should be posted far and wide on on local health department websites and I'm not seeing that.

130 Here's something that's crazy-insane-nutzoid: Testing Vitamin-D level is not one of the standard tests of your blood when you get a routine physical.

Not only do you have to supplement with the correct vitamin D (D3, or cholecalciferal) Also, you have to ask for the correct test of the two D tests they can run. (which I don't remember. Sorry, it's been 15 or 20 years since I started all this)

If you want to do the sunlight route, the sun has to be 50 degrees or more above the horizon for the UVB to manufacture vit D. So, time of day and latitude matter.

131 Anyone know about the sidebar playstation kerfuffle ace referenced?
---

*THERE"S NO WAY TO DISCUSS THIS WITHOUT SPOILERS*

Someone leaked video and stills from The Last of Us Two (it's not clear why). The game introduces a character who appears to be trans (a dude cosplaying a woman) who is apparently the son of someone the first game's protaganist killed to save the girl. This is a game that was lauded for how attached everyone got to the two main characters because it was all about their relationship (zombie apocalypse setting, she had a cure in her system, but he found out at the end of the first game that getting it would kill her). Early in 2, the trans freak kills the guy, so you play half the game as the girl on a quest for revenge. Then you play as the trans, and the girls is the end boss. So the last fight in the game is a button mashing contest where you're a muscular dude with a wig choking the life out of a 19 year old girl who's clearly terrified, and once she's unconscious, slamming her face into the ground until it caves in. So Disney Star Wars levels of destruction of beloved characters in order to replace them with woke heroes.

When this first got out Sony, through a third party issued copyright stikes against anyone showing the video, which is questionable (reviewers tend to sign contracts that they won't release game materials before a particular date, it's less clear what limits there are to fair use of leaked materials for people without contractual relationship to the developer). But they also claimed copyright on anyone discussing the leak, anyone making memes about the leak, and in some cases, anyone so much as discussing Sony's behavior in trying to suppress the leaks.

This has happened around the internet and on twitter, but was most notable on youtube, where if you get three copyright strikes, your entire channel gets taken down. So Sony is actively preventing a bunch of youtubers from earning income (Jeremy from Geeks and Gamers can't livestream at the moment) and threatening to destroy their livelihoods illegally, and many of them are preparing lawsuits against Sony.

This is what is driving me crazy about all this testing. Who cares how many confirmed cases there are? The question is "How many need hospitalization?". People who are mildly ill or asymptomatic just confirm that like any other flu, it will run it s course, we will get herd immunity. There is no proof that people who are asymptomatic can pass the virus on to others.I had an argument yesterday with someone I know well about this. The bottom line is that we have the 4th most deaths in the country here in MA. Maybe what we are doing is not working. Instead of making things more draconian, maybe we should take a page from Georgia and Florida which are continuing to do even better. When do you look at things and admit that maybe there is another way.I fear we will never fully open. Boston mayor acting similar to LA.

150 Truth be told, I've had my nose to the grindstone my whole life - and never for my own benefit. No real enjoyment of life, no freedom, no just being me. Those crucial periods of life where you figure things out, live life, decide who you really are - those never happened. Working to keep my parents from being disappointed, working to keep my teachers from being disappointed, working unsuccessfully to keep my wife placated and to outpace her spending.

These are what I call my Lost Years. This is why I'm glad that I now have a great job that pays well and that I'll be heading to a new town. It's a reset that I need, and a chance to maybe, just maybe, get some of that time back that I flushed down the drain.

You know who one of our greatest philosophers is today?

Mike Tyson.

Yes, that Mike Tyson.

One of the things he says is that he doesn't want to revisit his glory days, partly because he's not proud of much of what he did, but what he does with the memories is use them as tools, as building blocks for what he wants to do now and in the future.

He says he's grateful for what he's gone through, because it helped make him who he is today.

He's at peace.

Peace will always be about the here and now. The past is... it's the past. Either learn from it and move on, or just let it go and move on. Period.

159 Speaking of corona testing, last night we drove past one of those testing stations set up in a local hospital parking lot. Not one person was there. And the parking lot for the regular hospital had less than a dozen cars in it. That particular county supposedly has one of the fastest growing positive test rates in the state. So I guess if 1 person goes to the testing site on Friday, and tests positive, Friday's number jumps to 100 percent. Or something. I don't math.

But I can do something about right now, and about the future. And I want to be open to and prepared for the opportunities, instead of missing them over and over and over again out of a completely wrongheaded belief about life resulting from really destructive programming.

Alas, most people don't care what kind of boring or badly designed interiors they subject their fish to, so that became unrewarding.

Peace is attainable. Don't get too caught up in fulfillment. If you believe in God, that can help on both fronts.

And if you don't believe, then working to keep yourself in the moment at any given time also helps. It just so happens that the present moment is also where we most easily access God. We worry about the future and regret the past because God isn't at those places when we take our minds there. He's here with you *now*.

That's how I see it anyway.

Dirty secret most of media has not caught onto.

If you look at the Flynn timeline, its more scary than they want to admit.

To unmask something, you already have to have the transcript, then you ask the to unmask the redacted name. You put in a request, it goes to the NSA, gets approved, then the transcript is unmasked. Takes time.

The phone calls he was busted for was Dec 29.

There are NO Unmasking requests for Flynn between Dec 29 and Jan 4.

In a Whitehouse Meeting on Jan 5, Obama himself knows about the Flynn phone calls and their contents.

On Jan 5 the Whitehouse Chief of Staff, puts in an unmasking request on Flynn.

Now, second part of this. In Flynn's case his lawyer subpoena'd the transcript or audio for the phone call. Government said they do not have it.

So, they were monitoring Flynn via some other manner, because Obama knew about those phone calls BEFORE they could possibly be unmasked, AND, the NSA does not have them.

206 Vitamin D deficiency appears with other underlying conditions, though. That's why it's dumb to get too caught up in correlations.

I am excessively deficient in D an I also have Crohn's, which leads me to be on medication which suppresses my immune system. I am thankfully in remission.

Most people would say if you fix the D deficiency you'll fix your Crohn's - since so many people with Crohn's have it. But there's a damn good chance it's actually the other way around.

I'm not saying COVID causes a Vitamin D deficiency but that, for multiple reasons, people who are already ill (and susceptible to COVID death) are more likely to be lacking in D.

Still, 1,272 deaths out of 30Mil or so statewide and about 8mil in North Tx. ain't that bad.

It took me a couple of transfers before I realized it, but,

Every 4 or 5 years in the Navy you get transferred, and if you are SINGLE, its a very rare opportunity to reinvent yourself.

One of the hardest parts of changing, is that those who know you treat you like, the old you.

Its like when you go home and Mom treats you like the 14 year old you will always be to her. It becomes really easy to slip back into those behaviours and attitudes from the past.

But moving to a new city? if you are single and thus not taking people with you?

You have a chance to make change without having to convince those who know you, that you have changed.

Most never realize this, but you can take conscious control of this, and use it.

I did, a number of times.

And in a couple more years (once the Mom situation changes and I'm free again), I'll use it again.

238 That bar chart on Vitamin D looks scary and conclusive, but the link says "patients with a severe D deficiency are twice as likely to have Covid-19 complications, including death."

That is still interesting, but less conclusive. More vulnerable people are certainly more likely to have D deficiency, but is that causal or only correlated? The article says D "appears to play a role in Covid-19 mortality rates" ... Overall they said D deficiency is harmful, so certainly supplementing for those people would help (possibly help stop the cytokine storm), and if it is a key factor could reduce death rate by half (they estimated).

hurray ... as with HCQ+Z, it may not be the complete answer, but is a cheap and safe advancement in the fight. So if Trump would endorse it, the MSM would denounce it. heh

Posted by: illiniwek at May 16, 2020 12:43 PM (Cus5s)

239 Dirty secret most of media has not caught onto.

Because that makes "The Russians told Obama about it" the more likely
Posted by: Methos at May 16, 2020 12:50 PM (kOpft)

Could have been Brits or Italians, or someone else, I really doubt it was the Russians.

The phone calls were on the day Sanctions went into affect vs Russia. Flynn was trying to calm things down so Russia would not retaliate, and create a crises just as Trump was coming into office.

He was successful, which is what I think, pissed Obama off (this time).

I'd have to say both. There is a hereditary component to depression, but there is also a conditioning component to a negative outlook. When 99% of what you're programmed with growing up is you're always wrong, everything not a certain way is wrong, and nothing you do is ever good enough, you're going to have a certain outlook as a result. Different for different people, and the conditioning part can be mitigated, but that's been my experience.

Farkas's chaotic use of pronouns, tenses, and person (first, second, third) has me confused. It's almost hard for me to believe that she'd sit there on MSNBC and proclaim that she'd told people in the Odministration to vacuum up intel on ... Trump-Russia "collusion"? ... because she was afraid it would go nowhere. Presumably, after this, they'd ILLEGALLY LEAK IT TO THE PRESS. I mean wtf? You just sit there on tv and say that?

Then it goes on. As I understand it:

If the Trump people found out how we'd gotten this shyt, well then, they'd put a stop to it and we alumni wouldn't be able to keep SIPHONING IT OUT ILLEGALLY [and, presumably, leaking it illegally].

And then it goes on. As I understand it:

I was worried because there wasn't enough fake shyt hitting the headlines and I knew what we had. So I talked to some of my swamp creature pals who were still swamping around in the Trump administration (aka Obama holdovers) and told them to start feeding this shyt to Congress.

Did I get that right?

How does someone sit on tv and say these things?

I was reading something recently, about some slight insignificant piece of the Breitbart story, something he was involved in uncovering.

But it involved some of the usual suspects, and it wasn't long before he died.

I don't understand why people are so quick to believe the official story of his death. They had motive, and they sure as hell had opportunity, and the story of his last night suggests a plausible scenario for his murder.

Yeah, I think it does boil down to a basic question of, what is justice in this case?

Is justice about punishing the evildoers? Is it about stopping them from doing what they've been doing? Is it about preventing them from ever doing it again?

All valid goals, but not necessarily compatible. We only have as many tools as we do, and yes, Trump is a tool... in the best sense of the word. Once he's used up, then what?

As difficult as it might be, the BEST course of action might NOT be punishing Obama and Jarrett and Rice and Comey and Clapper and Brennan and Strozk and on and on and on.

It might be stopping them now. And maybe... reducing the power of those who will come after them to try it again.

The most depressed I've ever been was when I was going through my divorce. I was going to a therapist and he said that I had to look at the situation as an opportunity to be me and do what made me happy. I was shocked to realize that I could not remember what my dreams had been or what I liked to do to make me happy. The marriage ( for 20 years) to a physically and mentally abusive man had taken such a toll. I could not even remember being happy or doing anything just because it made me happy to do it. Sad.

Sure, but they're complaining it's damn near impossible to get a FISA court to sign off on anything these days.

I don't know if FISA courts are the main problem here.

What I'd like to see are Eff Bee Eye agents having to have anything they get in terms of questioning anybody, subject to the same standard as cops. Record them. Have the recording be necessary to get an indictment, and if said recordings "disappear" before trial? The thing gets tossed.

That would go a long way to changing things moving forward.

Hi, Sharon. Yeah. They are afraid of authority. I think it comes from us - and I mean us Americans, being a very law abiding society. It is very unique. Think about it, we voluntarily file taxes. Voluntarily submit our info. Being law abiding is not truckling, no, it is considered virtuous maybe ? Some long adopted Protestant ethic ? Who knows. So now, our law abiding natures are being abused.

Then there's the shifting goalposts, where they won't give an end date. Why can you take mass transit but can't walk through a museum? Has anyone actually found the live virus in sand at the beach? Why can you go to a park during the day but must not be allowed to camp overnight? Has anyone gotten Wuflu from getting a haircut?

There's been an erosion of trust in the FBI, and I think it's pretty darned deep at this point. We already know nobody trusts the media, nobody trusts Congress. The entire "deep state" narrative HAS taken hold, and it will only get worse for them.

So they kinda have two choices: Make those changes, and hope to hold onto something close to their power, or incur more and more wrath, to the point of what has essentially been limited to black communities in this country, which is a deep distrust of law enforcement, to the point of preferring to tolerate crime, rather than cooperate with them.

Imagine a world where the FBI shows up, anywhere they do, and everybody says "nope, not cooperatin'."

And agents are getting ambushed and shot, and nobody bats an eye. There's no outrage, there's just a shrug.

This goes one of those two ways: Change or civil disobedience and violence. Going back to business as usual is not an option.

OK, let's put yourself in this guy's shoes:
1) You are from New York. It's a blasted Hellscape- but it's home.

2) You are taking this opportunity to visit the Island Paradise of Hawaii. Magnum PI. Bikinis.

3) You find out you have to serve a 14 day quarantine. We don't know if you have a job or what your time constraints may be, but we assume you may have some. I am guessing Hawaii ain't cheap if you do not live there.

My first thought is why the hell would you post on social media, knowing the situation? People think that social media is something it isn't. They believe it is a place to hang out with friends and post photos. It is that, but you are naked before the bar on something like Facebook. Here, we at least have the thin veneer of anonymity (aside from the guys who use their real names.) It maintains the relaxed atmosphere .

I wonder who turned this guy in. Did he have an open profile? Angry relatives who told him not to go?

Regardless, it does bring up an interesting question. I doubt any of us would have a problem with someone notifying the police if they saw a real crime occurring (rape, murder, theft.) Surfing though? Where is the line where you turn from concerned citizen to Karen/Informant?

Now I do think there is an obvious line and you know where it is in your gut, but it is not the same as the legal definition these days- and I lean more toward my default- the government has way too much fucking power and reach.

That's the other part of all of this, and I sort of alluded to it.

Someone turned him in. The government then acted on the information.

Both parts of that speak to a bad, bad situation. People turning informant is the one you have the least control over, but you would like to live in a world where the guy on the government end of the line would just laugh at said informant and say 'What the hell do you expect me to do? Arrest him? *make jerkoff motions*'

The long reach of Karen. Someone half a world away is having fun. Let's put a stop to that.

Which, you know, is also another way of saying your facecrook "friends" are not your friends.

I have a dream. Everyone realizes it's not such a good thing to have everyone you know, knowing everything you do, because, you know, now that they can report you, they're gonna report you. Facecrook dies and Mark Zuckerrobot becomes as important as Tom from Myspace.

Welcome to my world.

It's lonesome at times tho. I learned 40 years ago that the people who can do the most damage to you are the people you think are your friends.

And that includes SO's and In-Laws.

Cut those numbers down and suddenly a life full of strife becomes manageable. Sure sometimes it would be handy to have a friend or two for whatever reason but the penalty outweighs the benefit in my view.

Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.

510 Chocolate with hot pepper ingredients, even just a bit of dried cayenne, can be very good. They work well together. A San Diego company, I think called Chao, has a whole line of chocolates, many with capsicum ingredients.

But it all fits.

I believe the origin of chocolate was as an unsweetened beverage, with hot chile, back in pre-Columbian Mexico. The word itself is from the Nahuatl, I think. And it was restricted to high-caste, priest-caste people.

514 Not that my estimate of the populace overall could go much lower, but this episode is further revealing the lack of curiosity, scientific illiteracy, and general aversion to critical thinking that I'd call catastrophic in this society now.

Yesterday spoke to a life-long friend/acquaintance, very smart guy in general, but he couldn't even begin to grasp that lockdown was ineffective, for various reasons. Even when I explained that long settled CDC and WHO etc doctrine is that radical containment measures are irrelevant past a certain prevalence rate (very low, like 1%). He seemed to kind of get that many ridiculous restrictions, such as those on outdoor activity, were unlikely to be based in any real risk of transmission.

But wow. The deference to "experts", or simply county and state public health authorities, is pathetic - when those entities are doing absurd things like mixing anti-body positives and PCR positives.

"My father passed away very peacefully last night at the fantastic age of 86 years old. He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much!" his daughter Hope told Fox News in a statement on Saturday. "We will miss him forever."

521 I'm going to send a letter to the Attorney General in NY state pointing out that if Gov Cuomo thought about what he was doing when he ordered Covid-19 patients into nursing homes, that the governor would be guilty of first degree premeditated mass murder. On the other hand if he is the sort of person who makes decisions so stupid that the average village idiot would see they are obvious, glaring, errors, then the governor is only guilty of hundreds of counts of criminally negligent homicide. I'll also point out that if the attorney general refuses to investigate the governor's actions, that he becomes an accessory after the fact. I'll also note I'm sending courtesy copies to Attorney Gen Barr and President Trump at the end of the letter.
