Gun Thread: Happy Mother's Day Edition! [Weasel]

ma barker 2 scaled.jpg
Kate "Ma" Barker c. 1932

Well today it seems fitting to pay tribute to the shooting Moms in our lives, by dragging out our picture of Ma Barker. Happy Mother's Day! In fact, all the shooting 'ettes deserve a special day of their own, don't you think?!

Hey! Remember that time when I promised you a WeaselVideo on the '03 Springfield? Remember that time? Welp, I have some bad news, I couldn't make it to the farm this week so it didn't happen. I'll have it next weekend, I promise!! I double promise! Swearsies!

Anyhow, that's what you get for believing a guy calling himself "Weasel" on the internet, but what do we do for this week? Fortunately, I had some footage saved from a couple of weeks back when I was making the Garand video. So, in an historic WeaselVideo first, we have a Special Guest Shooter! That's right, my main shooting buddy "Geoff" came down to the farm to do some shooting with his MP5. So let's have a look at that, shall we?

WeaselAcres and the H&K MP5

I'm here to tell you, the MP5 is a very, very nice firearm. Bigly very nice. It's a solid platform, and Geoff has done a great job in fitting it out with the folding stock, foregrip and optics, don't you think? A big thank you to Geoff who is probably lurking here this evening, so let's give him a hearty Gun Thread welcome!

The weather is supposed to be great this week, so I am planning to head to the farm for a few days to do some mowing and other chores, and to film the '03 Springfield shooting sequences. I really mean it this time! Honest!

*****

So what else do we have? Well, we're chock full o' content this week!

Our pal Alberta Oil Peon mentioned in the comments last week that he was working on a project gun.

On Friday I messed with the barrel of the Chinese Mystery Pistol. I brought barrel and breechblock home with me, not the frame! So I am legal at border crossing.

Threads on the breech end of the barrel, where it screws into the frame appear to be 5/8-18 NF. Using my thread gauge, 18 tpi is the closest match. Nothing metric even comes close. Looked up British Standard Whitworth, and British Standard Fine, and there is nothing close to 18 tpi in a 5/8" diameter. The thread on the barrel is damaged, so I am going to go with 5/8-18. A 5/8-18 nut does spin on there OK, but a little loosely.

Anyway, my plan is to buy a new Tokarev TT-30 barrel from a Canadian supplier, and once it is in my hands, devise a way to make it fit the mystery pistol. Either thread the barrel in my lathe, or maybe make a threaded sleeve, which could be silver-soldered to the barrel once the right headspace and clocking of the feed ramp and extractor slot is established.

So AOP agreed to send pictures and you can at least believe what he says, because I almost immediately had the following:

Here are 3 pics of the darn thing. It is apparently a Chinese-made
copy of an FN model 1900, dating to the warlord era in China, between
the fall of the last Emperor, and the rise of the Commies. But it's not
chambered in .32 ACP, but in .30 Mauser. Both Mauser Broomhandles and FN
1900's were popular in China during that time, so it's not surprising
that some gunsmith there tried to make a "1900 clone" chambered for the
hotter cartridge.

Looks like some former owner might have tried to fire a 7.62 X 25 Tokarev cartridge, which then damaged the chamber, and whacked the slide back viciously, too.

And the only marking on it is that one serial number.

AOP 2 scaled.jpg

AOP 3 scaled.jpg

AOP 4 scaled.jpg

Thanks AOP, that's a very cool mystery gun. We'll look forward to more reports as your project moves along!

*****

And from our pal A.H. Lloyd we have the following nice report:

A couple of years ago I started building a Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" out of spare parts. The goal is to have a nice refinished "shooter's gun." It will have little historical value for collectors, but is something one can shoot without remorse. The project had languished, but during the lockdown I took the plunge and bought a reproduction holster/stock.

This may come as a surprise to many people, but right now it's illegal to put a stock on a handgun because "short-barreled rifles" are for some strange reason restricted. You can own them, but you need to get a tax stamp. This restriction is why "braces" are becoming more popular.
Anyhow, the C96 is one of a handful of pistols exempt from this silly rule due to its C&R status. Last weekend, I withdrew to a secure undisclosed location for some range time to see how it shoots.

The distance was about 18 yards and my first 30 shots were with just the pistol.

C96 basic scaled.jpg

Not bad for a casual shooter. Weasel would probably have obliterated the bullseye. [...or shot himself in the foot. - Weasel]

Next, I added the stock. If you look at videos about this, you'll see repeated references about the need to tuck the thumb of one's shooting hand lest the hammer smash it. This is absolutely true, and I learned a painful lesson. After applying some dirt and hot iron, I continued, with the result shown below. Pay no attention to the upper two holes, my daughter forgot what target she was engaging with her .22.

C96 with stock scaled.jpg

C96 stock scaled.jpg

In terms of handling, I like the C96 a lot. It is barrel-heavy, but 7.63 Mauser is a very snappy round, and while you get a lot of barrel rise, it then self-corrects. With the stock attached there is much less recoil, leading to faster, more accurate fire. Pistol carbines are all the rage now, but this weapon shows they are nothing new. I understand why the Chinese and Spanish cranked them out in bulk, and why the C96 stayed in production for 40 years (longer if you include the clones).

If not for the expense and rarity of the ammo, this would be a fantastic little plinker. It's a little awkward at first, and using stripper clips is not something most people are used to, but otherwise it is a hoot to shoot. Completely changes the feel of the weapon.

Ancient enemies scaled.jpg

Since I was playing with archaic stuff, I thought it would be fun to take out my Webley Mk VI in .455 and see how it compared. This one has a shaved cylinder, but I've modified some full moon clips to take the original cartridges.

Growing up, I read a great deal about how the .455 was supposedly a hefty round with fearsome recoil, but in the large frame it's very easy to shoot. In fact, the contemporaneous Dreyse M1907 is a lot snappier, but no one talks about the brutal recoil of .32 ACP.

A note on the target: I was having some fun, so I fired it on single action, double action, and unsupported on double action, which generally wrecked my group but was quite enjoyable. All in all, a nice relaxing day at the range. Tragically, I decided to take a canoe home and well, its turned over and everything was lost. Again.

Webley scaled.jpg

That's a great report, AHL!! Thank you!

Our pal and delightful 'ette Bebe's Boobs Destroy sends us the following question:

Howdy! I've been shopping for a faraday pouch for my phone to foil our contact tracing marxist overlords here in California & it's kinda confusing but I'm pretty sure this is something the horde could help with!

C'mon, people, let's help Bebe out!

*****

Our pal Zeus sends us the following note on WTM's targets from last week:

When I saw the post from WTM and the picture of the target he shot with his .45 LC Judge it reminded me of a story a corrections officer friend told me about his annual range qualification. He shot a good string except for two hits in the throat area of the silhouette target. When adding up his qualification score the range officer told him the two shots in the throat didn't count. His terse reply was," Well, they sure as hell count in the street."

That's a great story, Zeus, thanks for sharing it!

so, being of sound mind, i went over to my favorite local toy store Friday, and they still had the Thompson Contender set that has been languishing on the display shelf for some months now.

at least 5 or 6 different barrels, 3 scopes, and mine for just over $1600, out the door. it's now in the back room, waiting for me to get my card.

19 About the Faraday cage idea for phones, if you have a modern phone, iphone or android type, that thing is just a-transmitting the pings all day long.
If it didn't, it wouldn't work.
So in a way we are all like a bunch of peeping frogs in a pond, all saying the same thing: "I am here".

24 Faraday cages are basically a metal cage, generally done with screen so it's lighter and cheaper, but the screen size has to match the wavelength of what you're trying to block. Solid metal blocks all wavelengths. Same with a pouch. Inside, you place something that you're protecting so it can't come into contact with the cage. All of that aside, a cookie tin lined with cardboard makes an effective faraday cage, as does an old microwave. A pouch - make a three layer pouch - leather (or material), thick layer of foil (aluminum, lead, whatever, but thick enough so it's not easy to tear) and another layer of material. Easy peasy.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at May 10, 2020 07:17 PM (yQpMk)

32 Well, I finally found out why my range up in Broomfield was closed all this time. Seems like some young yahoo got himself an AR at a pawnshop and asked the old guy behind the counter if he could fire tracer rounds with it. Old guy told him yeah. So the kid loads up his mags with tracer rounds and heads to the range. Now this range, like probably every range in country makes you sign a liability waiver. I distinctly remember when I signed it said tracer ammunition is prohibited at this site. (and every other range I've signed those for).
So kid goes and unloads a mag with his tracer rounds at the range. Now, the backstop at this range is shredded tire material. And predictably, it caught fire. Burned a hole in the roof. So they've been closed to remodel and hope to re-open in a week or two.
Young kid, arrested for felony arson. I hope he enjoyed shooting the last firearm he'll ever posses, legally.

Thanks. It is in great shape externally. A couple of compressions, and one scratch, that I considered fixing but then I decided it was nice enough as it is. I can't comment on the bore yet as I haven't shot it and I have no gauges.

Of course the first thing I did yesterday was tear it completely down and clean and oil it. The weird thing, and I have found this often, though this rifle has clearly passed though several hands, it still had cosmoline in lots of places inside.

Lots of people do not seem to really clean their surplus rifles even when they shoot them.

57 AOP, I am told the Chinese (pre-war) made a lot of hand-crafted pistols and these were considered one of the nicer gifts to give, say, to overseas businessmen.

they liked the German designs, and apparently there was lots of contacts between the nationalists and the German industrialists and some government types looking for raw materials, right up to when the Japanese started complaining that their allies should either stop working with the enemies of the Japanese, or stop being their allies.

This is what I was told in passing, when I was looking at pictures of another mystery pistol.
It seems that the gunsmiths would find things they like and kind of, put them together.

It's not just rifles. At this point, whenever I get a new vintage firearm, the first thing I do is crack it open and do a major deep clean. Even if they look nice on the outside, odds are no one has bothered a field strip since it was mustered out of service.

I'm going to give a shout-out to Break Free CLP because that stuff is really ripping the carbon out of that Dreyse M1907. The bolt is getting visibly brighter under repeated applications and as I noted last week, it's running better and better.

One thing I've also learned: pace yourself. One deep clean isn't enough. It's better to do a series of sessions to chip your way through than to try to get it clean in one go.

I'm sure firing a full auto is fun but I'm way too cheap to blow off ammo with one. And if someone else provided the ammo, I would feel guilty about shooting up all of theirs. (1950s Catholic guilt and Yankee frugality.)

Ahh Webleys. A good mate of mine brought one at auction .455 cal. We both looked at it before he brought it and I thought it was a nice, good to average condition one as most are, looks like everything is working. Did my armourer without tools look over and said he should buy it. Took it to the range a few days later, new factory ammo, loaded the cylinder and click. Try again, click. WTF? Some mincer had filed the spur of the firing pin on the hammer so it would just fail to protrude and hit the primer. The profile was correct and looked normal except it was about 2mm lower in profile than it should had been. As the firing pin is a part of the hammer on that model, I had to build and shape up the firing pin to spec so it would fire. Of course it was all my fault. Grrrrr.

It gets the job done more often than not.

What is interesting to me is how much calibers have increased over the last century.

A number of countries went to war in 1914 with what we call "mouse guns" today. They must not have been useless because the same countries kept those calibers after the war.

Maybe "stopping power" is kind of a load of crap.

The only thing "H&K" I own is a Century C93 which is made from parts resourced from H&K 93's which were in service then sold from Malaysia I believe. Semi-auto rifle in 5.56mm.

Good shooter, even more accurate than my AR's, but the ergonomics are not up to par with an AR when it comes to magazine changes, charging the rifle and no bolt hold open after the last round.

The roller delayed blowback system runs and runs. Cleaning is a bitch around the chamber but the rifle's system doesn't mind the carbon build up at all and will just flat out shoot as the rest of the rifle stays very clean even after hundreds of rounds.

H&K Slap FTW!

Not long ago a friend of mine told me that .40s were now out of fashion. They were hot hot hot in the 90s, but everyone was going back to 9mm.

Which meant if I wanted an HK...getting it in .40 was the way to go.

He was right.

With all the panic-buying, I'm amused to note that the ONE caliber that is still plentiful is....40. I keep going back to Stock and Field and they've always got more. For a while it was .40, .380 (?!) and .22, but the .380 is gone, .22 is dwindling, but the .40 trundles on. So I buy some each week, 'cause it's there.

I'm thinking of getting a .40 carbine. I bet that would absolutely kick ass.

It isn't about "stopping power" it's about ability to put rounds on target.

One should buy the gun one is willing to put in the range time with and find out if one can hit the target and if the firearm is reliable.

454 Casull has all the "stopping power" in the world, but I highly doubt one would want to put in the range time needed to become proficient.

I would hasten to add, this is my .02 and we know how much that will buy these days.

The whole idea of wounding the enemy vs. killing him only worked when the enemy cared about their wounded.
Now, we still have to care for the wounded... both sides.
I think that idea is being looked at in War College planning.
It's self defeating against most battle enemies we've been against in the last 30 years/

146 It isn't about "stopping power" it's about ability to put rounds on target.

One should buy the gun one is willing to put in the range time with
and find out if one can hit the target and if the firearm is reliable.

454 Casull has all the "stopping power" in the world, but I highly
doubt one would want to put in the range time needed to become
proficient.

I would hasten to add, this is my .02 and we know how much that will buy these days.

Another factor is the ease of manufacture and the prevalence of the machinery to do it.

The Germans made 9mm Luger a thing. The US didn't use it, the French didn't use it and the Brits didn't use it, but the rest of Europe got on board and because the British haven't designed a useful handgun since the 19th Century, they hopped on the bandwagon.

NATO commonality eventually won out, and it became the standard.

It's not a bad round by any means, and we can't cry too hard about it because John Browning started building the Hi Power around it.

If it was okay with him, it's okay with me.

But whom am I kidding, the FOPA/NFA/GCA are all bullshit and should be abolished.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at May 10, 2020 07:51 PM (Z+IKu)

149 I DID go to the range yesterday, and for the first time in months, it was busy. Glad to see it. Warm weather is getting people outside despite The Fear.

But on to shooting: I was using the CZ p-07 again and....it is SUCH a great pistol. I used the Kadet adapter after last week's attempted kaboom. Using Federal copper washed ammo, had no problems, two light strikes that failed to fire in single action but did fire when I pulled the trigger again in double action. Good aimed groups this week, unaimed groups were...different.

I'll explain: this week's main drill was to start out with the pistol loaded and laying on the firing platform, facing away from the target. On command, turn and fire three rounds. Repeat 3x. Distance was 5 yards. The goals were to: get faster, get some movement into our drills, practice triple taps instead of double taps.

I tell ya, when muscle memory wants you to go 'bang-bang', forcing yourself to go 'bang-bang-bang' instead is not easy. Still, it was fun. Groups were not as good but got better the more we practiced.

The other drill was shooting two rounds at 1" dots at 3 yards. That went ok, too.

Adding movement, of the gun or the body or both, really opens up groups but none of the paper targets made it home alive.

A good day at the range.

155 When I decided to get a suppressor for my Ruger SR-22 I went through the whole "tax stamp" process. It used to take a year or more, but when I bought mine I had the hardware in my hands in about 4 months.

I'm seriously thinking about a full auto AR platform, or perhaps an AK. I'm willing to wait... assuming I find what I want. That's the key IMO, being willing to wait for months on end for the wheels to turn.

Posted by: Martini Farmer - Not Masked and Hearding Cats at May 10, 2020 07:55 PM (3H9h1)

156 So basically you need about $35,000++ just laying around to have a fully automatic weapon... legally. Ridiculous !!!

As I have said before there is a man who owns a complete Vietnam era Cobra helicopter gunship, including the minigun which will fire 6000 rounds of 7.62 X 51 NATO per minute, and the servo helmet which allows the rear seat gunner to aim the minigun simply by turning his head to look at the target.

Saw one of those Cobra's in action just outside our wire one night in Long Binh. Not enough left of the enemy patrol the next morning to identify anything as human.

203 About the faraday cage for the phone
Author Hans Schantz suggested using and empty foil potato chip bag. Ubiquitous, Cheap and easy to explain. I dont know if it is effective but that is another question....
Posted by: Dread0

OPSEC, like Field Artillery, is king of the battle.

Now that we all know we can sew a damned mask, make your own faraday cell phone case.

1. Steel window screen. Lay out a pattern like two rectangles connected at the narrow edge. One is about 3" longer then the other to make a top flap to tuck inside and complete the cage.

2. FLANNEL lining. This keeps the cell phone from getting scratched. Cut it out slightly
Larger than the screen.

3. Purty outer lining. Dealers choice. Same size as the flannel liner.

4. Fold the three rectangles together, putty side in with the screen sandwiched between the two clothes. Leave the three in flap out.

5. Stitch all three together with the screen in the middle.

6. Invert, (turn it right-side out so the putty side is exposed) insert cell phone. Tuck in flap, ensuring flap covers the top of the phone. Test, by attempting to call the cell phone.

If the phone rings, monkey with the flap size and length until it doesn't. Mine worked first try.

212 Maybe "stopping power" is kind of a load of crap.

In 1900 there was a professional hunter in Africa who demonstrated that he could kill a bull elephant with a single shot from a .22. Of course the downside of that was that he needed an entire crew of bearers to carry his giant brass balls around.

Problem is the sheer volume of laws and the fact that there's so much overlap. One action can get you charged with a dozen different offenses which all basically outlaw the same thing with varying degrees of vagueness.

And the federal criminal code takes dozens of feet of linear shelf space. Even the lawyers are only comfortable advising you on their own area of expertise. It's not reasonable to expect the average Joe to know what's illegal, and ignorance is a valid excuse for much of it.

246 This week, I can say yes, I was at the range - just got back 30 minutes ago in fact.

Beautiful warm but not hot day. Two other ROs were leaving as I arrived, I was the sole person at the range (complex of 5 ranges). Other than the BLM ranger and the Border Patrol guys down near the entrance, no other humanoids.

The neutral news is that the specially loaded 30-06 for the M1 (each charge weighed) shot about the same as the "regular" reloads (46.5g of 4064, 150g FMJBT bullet - a standard ball load, on the light-ish side). So - now need to take the time to weigh charges.

In any case, once the 4064's gone probably switching to TAC, which is a flattened ball powder (I think) - anyway it meters like a ball handgun powder, so the variation in charges is slight vs. what I get from the 4064 (stick powder).

Tuned the gas system, got the scope eye relief right, set up the cheek riser (took it off, actually), and positioned a hand stop and got the sling adjusted. Down to 2MOA, which is the limit of the Georgia Arms cheapo reloads being used. Next visit: Pass one, ammo customization, with six different bullet weights loaded over Varget.

I fired off a total of 11 rounds, to rezero my new AR (Vortex Tactical) scope after doing an eye relief tweak. Last four were touching at 25 yards, good to go for an Appleseed in a couple of weeks, COVID permitting.

257 In the annoying news category, the elevation knob screw on this particular Garand has an issue - always comes loose. Will finally have to deal with it, it's been happening for a while. And of course I've forgotten how to diagnose and fix, so that means more time going back to the CMP forums and scrounging around for answers. IIRC it can be several things, including a stripped screw, or the adjustment of the windage knob on the other side of the sight, into which that screw, well, screws.

Other annoying gear news is both 15-round M1 carbine mags are now failing to properly load the 14th and 15th rounds - they jam at an angle upwards, above the chamber - so now I'll have to figure that out after more testing with dummy rounds.

Anyone ever have that problem? Main spring on the rifle? Springs in the mags (but they're almost new)?

I suspect we agree. There are many factory bolts I'd consider ahead of an M-70 these days, although my thoughts tend toward a custom these days.

I've always loved the pre-64 1894, but if I were looking for another lever action for serious use, again, there are others ahead of that today.

I've also lost enthusiasm for the .300 WinMag. I have one, and still load for it, but it's now pretty much a once-a-year-range-gun.

268 I've got an unfair amount of full-auto trigger time in my past, and what can I say?

They're *all* fun!

But they can be very, very different.

An M-3 Grease Gun chugging along like a 1900's Hit n' Miss engine, vs. an actual .32 ACP Skorpion tuned and ripping 'em out at 1,200 rounds per min.

One I haven't got to try yet is an FN 5.7 with the giggle switch. Doesn't look like any muzzle rise with that one, at all.

Concur with the muzzle rise on the Uzi, but it's still in my Top 5 favorites to actually shoot. Why? 'Cause when you learn how it does what it does, it's a wicked-effective fighting tool. Ugly, klunky, accurate and reliable.

Most fun NON "mounted" one I've shot though? H&K G-3 in 7.62, with a wee-stubby barrel. Back in the late '80s at the long-gone Helotes, TX machine gun shoot.

30 round mag dump into the automobile hulk about 80 yards downrange.

Massive muzzle blast, but with rolling the shoulder into the stock, not a bit of muzzle rise.

But, you wanna talk about Strum and Drang, THAT thing was the embodiment of it!

I still "like" the M-60 more than the M-2 (just a different shooting experience), and getting my hands on *any* kind of Vulcan, from 7.62 on up, is STRONGLY on my To Do list.

Oh, and Ben Had?

I've seen those ladies shoot, too. All three of them.

Their modesty is.. endearing. And altogether not merited. They can SHOOT!

274 Hadn't shot the Model 66 in a while, so worked some steel plates from about 10-15 yards. Not too bad. Did some lateral movement, and approach/retrogade moving-while-shooting, just to maintain proper humility. It worked.

My SEAL buddy taught me the basics and we used to work on it during duty days when customers were few and one of the smaller ranges was empty ("[name redacted]'s Tactical Academy" I called it - it was great, and by the time he tragically moved to TX was becoming a problem, as all the ROs wanted to participate, leaving nobody to, well, do their jobs.

Forgot how nice the 66 shoots (4-inch, an original one from the early 90s, not a new one) no trigger work but years of use have given it a beautiful double-action touch and of course it has the light but perfect S&W single-action touch.

282 As I am typically late to this esteemed forum, I have a few range reports to catch up on...

4/5 - took the Savage Axis II in .30-06 and the .300 AAC hog hammer out to the lease range. I had the chrono and some freshly rolled 168gr -06 to test. Groups were crap and velocities were all over the place (best SD was an 1, but I consider it a win, as this was my first run at reloading the .30-06 and I left with all fingers and rifle intact. The hog hammer ran beautifully with the new H2 buffer and consistently delivers 1 MOA accuracy with 150gr freedom seeds.

4/26 - took Mrs. Deplorable Lurker and Lurking boy up to shoot her new Marlin Model 60 and her SR22. Once I got the scope on paper, I was placing some very nice groups on paper. She had a blast, and as usual, consistently out shoots me.

5/9 - another trip up with the boy and the .30-06 to sight in a new scope. Athlon Talos 4-16x40. Dirt cheap at $139, but I like the reticle and function. I've got the same scope on the hog hammer. Ran a box of ammo through it and thoroughly enjoyed myself with sub-MOA performance out of the rifle.

I had my department do some training at targets on the fantail, Mid-Pacific. We were on the helo deck shooting aft. All of us hit the target or the ocean, except for a overly buxom Signalman 3rd Class Petty Officer.

She hit the deck coaming more than once. Bullets were ricocheting all around. Good times.

I used to have her handle the phone and distance line forward on UNREPS. In her kapok, she was ... looked over a lot. From the alongside ship's CO's binocs to the 30 power Big Eyes. I guess the later was interested in pore structure.

I found out later she was signaling the ship's in-port phone number to the Battle Group. She was quite popular. When she went on leave, the calls to the ship went down 90%.

I had to talk to her.

361 Weasel - any ideas for a couple of 15-round M1 carbine mags that gork the last two rounds, sending them up at an angle, jamming with the bullet tip above the chamber?

10-round mags with same ammo work fine.

One of the 15-rounders worked fine the first few outings. One of them had a few glitches.

Must the be the mags, right? If the 10-rounders work with the same ammo.

The rifle is an AO/Kahr repro. I bought it barely used (possibly my best buy/steal ever), and have shot it a fair amount, not heavily. Wondering if I should just replace the main recoil spring anyway - if that doesn't do it, then the $*@#$#&($ mags must be to blame.

Haven't reviewed the generally recommended interval to replace main spring in a carbine.

I'm coming in this late, but there are two schools of thought - that "Ma" was just as gun-happy and criminal as her boys, or that she had no idea what they were doing and got blown away when the Feebs carried out their raid, leading Hoover to make up a story about how rotten she was.

There's an old Reader's Digest compilation of crime stories, where Hoover has his about "Ma." I'll try to find it for next week's book thread.

If the Faraday cage works, the phone will not be able to receive calls at all. So when you pull it out of the cage to make a call, or check for messages, the system will then get your location.

You could also leave the phone at home.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 10, 2020 09:28 PM (El6T/)

M1 carbines can be finicky past the 10 round magazines. I have one from 1942 and another from 1952 and both shoot well with the 10 round magazines (original) and even the 15 rounder at times but tend to get hung up when using a 30 rounder.

All of my magazines are military surplus and the 30 rounders are from South Korea. The carbine was designed around the 10 round magazine and after that it may be just the 15 and 30 rounders were just not a perfect fit. Weight and fit can let the mag just hang a bit lower resulting in misfeeds and so on.

Try loading 12 or 13 in the 15 round magazine and see what happens.

397 Hairyback Guy - I thought the 15-round was the original mag for the carbine? Even the photos from WWII, IIRC, show a 15-rounder (they're noticeably longer).

I never did read "War Baby", the exhaustive industrial history of that little rifle. Couldn't afford it!

Anyway, good suggestions. I've never had any consistent or regular problem with the 10-rounders.

Today's problems were with my reproduction rifle; I've got a 1943 Quality Hardware mixmaster, not sure I've tried them with that yet.

In any case, not all bad news - a small technical problem requiring research, dummy testing, and more shooting! Anything requiring more shooting is technically not a chore!

Your correct! I checked my mags and the 15 rounders were the original issue. Mine only take 14 in one for some reason. Too many cocktails and rifles to keep up with.......

The mags I have are 15-20-30 rounders. Try to under load them next time by a couple of rounds and see what it does. Also, sometimes I will slap the mag from underneath in between shots and see if that helps.

Now mine are old war horses so if yours is a new repro it may or may not be the mags.

Hope it helps anyways!

This is what happens in a Socialist state when they decide to reduce "health care costs" (which are really medical care costs, but I'll leave that for now).

There was one group of citizens the East Germans were more than happy to see leave the country: the elderly. They would dump them in West Berlin, basically telling them that "now that we used them up they are your problem now." East Germany in some ways was more obsessed with money than the West Germans.

I'm sure Gov Cuomo and other Statist/Socialist governors see sending Wuhan Flu victims (you see that, S.A. City Council??? Come arrest my ass for hate speech!!!) - CHINESE CORONAVIRUS victims - to nursing homes as killing two birds with one stone. Besides, the poor guy has a budget deficit to cover. (He COULD try trimming the NY bureaucracy, making NY friendlier to business and spending government money wisely, revamping the pension system into solvency and paying down debts, but nah, that's too hard.)

The gunner in the AH-1 is in the front seat. The early models (AH-1P and G) had a hydraulic turret with a 5.56 NATO mini-gun on the right and a 40mm grenade chunker on the left. Two separate ammo drums.
Later models like the E and F had a three barrel 20mm in an electric turret.

I used to wrench on them.

429 Correcting my fuckup, the E and F models used the M-197 7.62 NATO three barrelled gun.

431 I made a trip to the range this weekend and ended up making a purchase AFTER I left the range and was perusing the inventory (of course). I had just finished watching Tombstone on Netflix the day before, so when I saw a Ruger Wrangler in bronze finish it was all she wrote. I came back the following day to break her in and it was a blast. Great little 6 shooter and for the price ($179) it was an easy sell to the wifey. A fun range toy for exploring your inner feelings for single action handlebar mustaches. Fully endorsed.
