The Morning Rant

talking ape 02 social distance.jpg
Well looky here, folks, they just declassified a bunch of closed-door testimony before the House regarding the Russian collusion hoax, and guess what?

They've been lying.

I know you'll all shocked at this, but a bunch of former Obama admin officials were asked if they had seen any evidence that proved the Russians interfered with the 2016 election on Trump's behalf:

James Clapper: "I never saw any direct empirical evidence that the Trump campaign or someone in it was...conspiring with the Russians..."

Samantha Power: "I am not in possession of anything -- I am not in possession of anything and didn't read or absorb information that came out of the intelligence community..."

Susan Rice: "I don't recall... evidence to that effect."

Andrew McCabe: "We have not been able to prove the accuracy [of the Steele Dossier."

Everyln Farkas: "I didn't know anything." (she's running for Congress, by the way)

Remember these are the the officials who loudly proclaimed on CNN, MSNBC and other Democrat-friendly media outlets that they had *definite proof* that Trump was canoodling with Russian oligarchs, Vladimir Putin, or both. And this was in addition to getting peed on by Russian hookers.

This has been their incessant drumbeat for the past three years.

Politicians and public-facing government bureaucrats shade the truth and make deliberately misleading statements all the time, but this seems to me to be taking lying to a whole new level. There was a reason why every Republican on the House Intelligence Committee called for Adam Schiff's resignation. He knew full well that the private testimony directly contradicted what they were saying in public. And yet he continued to push the collusion hoax.

(And by the way, the reason Schiff released the transcripts was because DNI Grenell was about to release them, and so he needed to release them first to try to get out in front of the news cycle.)

I hope that after he leaves office in 2024, Donald Trump sets aside about a billion dollars of his own fortune and starts suing these guys. I would like to believe that some of this stuff is so flagrant and so outrageous that it has to be actionable. Of course, the fact that Trump ia a public official kind of muddies the water there, but on the other hand, let them be forced to defend their actions in a court of law.

I suspect Trump isn't going to be all "oh well, let bygones be bygones" once he leaves office.

How Dare He?

Friday's celebs: I first saw British actress Amanda Pays in the short-run TV series Max Headroom which was A Thing briefly in 1987 (based, iirc, on the 1985 movie of the same name, Peter Weller is probably best known for Robocop, which you should watch because it holds up surprisingly well, and I'd buy that for a dollar. You don't need to bother with the superfluous sequels because they suck.

One of you morons came up with a surprising connection between Pays and Weller:

373 Pays and Weller were both in movies about head trauma victims brought back to life in non-human form...

Posted by: Gridlock at May 08, 2020 12:06 PM (cgESv)

That's not the one I was thinking of, but I'll allow it, and also award extra style points for creativity. They were both in the mediocre 1989 movie Leviathan. That's the connection I was thinking of, but I'll admit Gridlock's linkage was much better.

The great people of Pennsylvania want their freedom now, and they are fully aware of what that entails. The Democrats are moving slowly, all over the USA, for political purposes. They would wait until November 3rd if it were up to them. Don't play politics. Be safe, move quickly!

I haven't even mentioned San Antonio or Houston.

Their beliefs are intentional. It's self rationalization to a large extent I suspect.

102 "Of course, the fact that Trump ia a public official kind of muddies the
water there, but on the other hand, let them be forced to defend their
actions in a court of law."

idk, but what seems to be pursued, is Criminal Conspiracy. Individual Acts are covered up with 'mistakes were made', but put together the emails and actions and criminal leaking and the picture of lots of dots points to criminal intent of conspiracy to frame Trump, via forcing his people to tell lies (Manafort tortured in solitary, they kept bringing him back to see if had suffered enough to start telling their lies).

The spread of propaganda by those listed above (Farkas and the rest "we have definite proof") becomes criminal conspiracy ... or I hope it does. This is what RICO Act was about, I think. Or maybe just normal conspiracy law against organizing a coup, is enough, I have no real legal depth to say. But that is what I hear ... CONSPIRACY ... (Hillary's Resistance is also conspiracy, and the grifters are perhaps another level of conspiracy to commit fraud on the nation ... all these overlap ...)

Then once they are in prison, maybe Trump can go after assets of those that funded the personal attack on Trump and his family, by the DeepState mafia trying to make him die in prison. (not sure if that is what Jack Straw's source was referring to or not)

Read the whole thing cuz you're going to hear it a lot.

And circumstances(?) have conspired to give them a talking point which may resonate strongly with certain voters.

That is:

Since the gov't has already paid a "minimal living wage" to everyone during this crisis to save the economy-

why not do it all the time?

Then, of course, here come the "necessary" taxes.

Like I said it's all laid out.
Posted by: naturalfake at May 11, 2020 09:25 AM (z0XD

Yeah. Anything to squeeze more. They lead in with things like Warren's "wealth tax" (e.g., capital expropriation) but then the real point is woven in.

More taxes on real estate. Taxing investment gains as income. More estate taxes. The false concept of corporate taxes. Taxing "carbon." The list goes on.

So there's the "billionaire's tax" (which is not a tax at all and will likely raise zero revenue because billionaires can afford to avoid it), but it is just cover for everything that will crush the middle class further.

Own a house? Fuck you, pay me.
Have a bit saved for retirement? Fuck you, pay me.
Saved to pass something on to your kids? Fuck you, pay me.
Have a car? Ride in an airplane? Use "fossil fuels" for transportation or to heat your home? Fuck you, pay me.

This is a "destroy the middle class and make an underclass beholden to the billionaires via universal basic income" scheme. And nothing more or less evil than that.

166 We may or may not vote ourselves out of this. That remains to be seen. But we're still in the place - and it's a better place - of having to act as though we can still do so. And we need to pray that it can be so, because in prayer, there is hope.

Doom and gloom won't accomplish anything. It won't even help the part of you that has given up in order to soften the blow when it comes. It is wasted energy I think. There will be plenty of time for it if/when the truth of that doom actually arrives. Just my .02

169 What I can't understand is why the Dems on the committee voted to release the testimony. It was a unanimous vote, I recall. Did they think they could keep it all bottled up in classification review forever?

My working theory is that the Dems in general aren't very smart. They try what they think will be clever ploys, but they are really dumb and flawed. They are so used to having media cover that they never think through any "what ifs" in case their plan doesn't work.

So we end up with an administration that starts a domestic political spying program and never thinks about "what if the other guys win?"

172 "There was a reason why every Republican on the House Intelligence Committee called for Adam Schiff's resignation. He knew full well that the private testimony directly contradicted what they were saying in public. And yet he continued to push the collusion hoax."

If Schiff cannot be removed from all committees henceforth (if not outright charged for some sort of abuse of power), then there's no point in having any sorts of "ethics" rules/laws for Congress. Just make a sign on the Hill that reads, "We'll fuckin' do what we want when we want and you won't!" and be done with the public pretense that Congress represents lawful activity.

If he isn't the worst member of Congress right now, I don't know who is... and we know there's a damn long list of bad actors.

Why someone picked him to do that film I'm not clear on, because his previous films were these slice of life homosexuals-in-Holland art films. This is what I am afraid of. All the blue gov's have to do is string out the lockdown 6 more weeks or so, and the economy won't have time to recover. The Dems didn't really engage in much fraud in MI or PA because they thought they had those states locked up -- they won't make that mistake this time, look for huge zombie votes in the cities to swamp all the other areas. Add that to the LIVs who think Trump "mishandled" the virus response, and I am really pessimistic. I mean, I will personally crawl over broken glass and volunteer and donate to Trump, but my optimism about Nov. is gone with this ridiculous hysteria over coronavirus.

==========

I think there's a lot of meta stuff going on in both Die Hard and Predator.

Predator is a combination of the big action movie and the slasher flick, and it's a combo that works really well. McTiernan actually turned down Commando before agreeing to do Predator.

Die Hard takes the action movies of the time in a completely new direction by removing the superhuman like Arnold or Sly and replacing him with the everyman John McClane.

I think the arthouse feeling is pretty present in his films, but they tend to be about things outside the movies themselves.

I'm still trying to figure out the artistic side of Rollerball, though.

OTOH, I'm sure there would be a few volunteers for a lab study controlling for that as the only variable.

He is the guy who supposedly first spotted evidence the Obama

he was a member of the NSC. He was put on the NSC by General Flynn.

He then went to work for Sessions.

The guy I am looking to resurface is Adam Lovinger. He also was
nominated by Flynn for a spot on the NSC but was then stripped of his
security clearance and essentially fired because he was the
whistleblower who turned in Stefan Halper.

Bad news no one wants to hear - it's already too late for the economy to recover by the election, we did far too much damage. It's going to take several years to recover, and some parts of it never will.

Now that does not mean all is lost, but it means we need to work that hard and ugly fact into the way we face the future. One hard thing - I think this summer, Trump has got to come out with some kind of insurance plan for the 20 million newly unemployed, or else the Dems will kill us with that in the fall. Those in the IC know how good the tools are, the thought of using them to spy domestically has been the "third rail" within the bureaucracy and congress for decades.

I know that it doesn't resonate with the average voter, and might not move the needle in an election.

But to a lot of people who understand and matter, people like Barr and people in the judicial system who aren't ideologue leftists, this is stepping over a very bright red line. And it includes the vanishing centrist Democrat too, because they know that if the IC is politically weaponized, then it can be turned on them. And the results won't be pretty.

Effectively it is line from Wargames, "The only way to win is not to play"

We are not being told how many of the now 5000 deaths in Ma are related to nursing homes.I am starting to be seriously concerned that there are going to be age cutoffs that will be justified under the guise of protecting those of us in the "age group". They haven't figured out that Trump is not playing by the old rulebook, the one where the GOP and conservatives cower in submission every time the Dems make an accusation. The progressives have done a lot of damage using conservative's sense of shame to their advantage. That's the way it always has been, and that is the way the Dems believe it still is.

But PDT is the ultimate Honey Badger.

There is a very clear, bright line dividing America today and its largely, but not exclusively, along political lines.

There are the easily manipulated, credulous people who think with their emotions and watch the news/pop culture all the time, who are convinced we'll all die if you don't wear a hazmat suit in your car as you rarely drive to the market in a mist of lysol.

And then there are the people who either due to life experience, cynicism or just being fed up are blowing off all the restrictions and getting on with their lives. While I think this is true and we're not going to turn out however many points of GNP/GDP we've lost by November, I don't think it is as bleak as you do. Yes, we are probably 24 months out from breaking even on this mess (maybe more or less, I dunno - I'm throwing figures out there that are based on nothing) but I also don't know that it needs to fully recover by November to be effective.

I think we need to have turned the corner and be getting back to effective growth, with the unemployment rate coming down. Will it be as good as it was? No. We set the house on fire. But if it is moving meaningfully in the right direction, it won't be a death sentence either.

Now you have to first open it up before you can do anything else. I think Trump and certain states are going to use this crisis as our advantage. So while, we won't get to 3% unemployment for a while, structurally, there are going to be advantages in this "recovery" that normally do not exist.

These Governors are responsible for pushing the death numbers. More than half of all deaths are in nursing homes. Imagine if this population had been protected. 432 I think Trump and certain states are going to use this crisis as our advantage. So while, we won't get to 3% unemployment for a while, structurally, there are going to be advantages in this "recovery" that normally do not exist.

I agree with you there - and I also think we have great long term prospects from re-shoring manufacturing and bring it back from China. The problem their is that it's going to take years for that process to start impacting employment numbers. Meanwhile, there's about to be a new round of layoffs from those that tried to hang on, but didn't have the institutional stamina to do it. A *lot* of small schools and small colleges are about to close, as is a lot of the remaining print media.

we've discussed that before, the shutdowns were done by the Governors, not Trump. He made the political decision that it was better to get in front of it rather than be run over by it, so he agreed they were doing a good thing. (but outside of NYC, it was a huge mistake)

"They" predicted that we would have a million deaths, they were wrong.

"They" predicted that the Dow would drop below 18K and stay there, they were wrong.

So I'm going to wait a little while before believing that "they" are correct on the fragility of the American economy. It survived 8 years of Obama, I'm pretty confident it can survive 8 weeks of Wuhan Flu.

He was limited regarding his ability to force states to shut down in the beginning because Federalism - even though the MSM was pushing for him to do that, so they can blame him for the economic fallout.

He is limited regarding his ability to open things back up because of Federalism, but he needed to remind everyone of that because they weren't paying attention the first time. As soon as he told everyone to open up, the MSM 'corrected' him to announce that he can't do that, because Federalism.

He didn't plan this - he was just being opportunistic, as well as correct on the Federalism stuff.

Strategically, it makes good sense. Most of these governors hail from states that aren't going to flip red even if Jesus returns and says "Vote Trump for your eternal salvation."*

Meanwhile, their shutdowns have devastating follow-on effects for the rest of the economy.

I believe the hope is to spread enough pain and misery to red states to turn Trump voters against him in November.

This.

"Bend the Curve" started out as lets not overwhelm our hospitals.

Hospitals are now so underwhelmed that many of them are laying off staff and closing entire wings.

Funny how that mutated into "we must remain quarrantined untill all the virus die."

504 In my surveying of the wreckage of this lockdown, this is what I am seeing:
- State / local budgets wrecked which will absolutlely require layoffs.- No appetite for any new taxes, in fact the appetite will be for more tax reductions.- Closed borders with less illegals.- Cheap credit- Reshoring of certain supply lines- Colleges (not Harvard - both many) wrecked which will require layoffs and shutdowns with people demanding lower tuition if online learning- Cheap energy- deregulation at federal level and in a lot of states

Structurally, the pieces are in place for a strong sustained recovery.

Of course, it hinges on Trump's reelection.

Using Illinois as an example, where the governor is a Hyatt Hotel trust fund billionaire who has never worked a day in his life, and has homes all over the globe, he's perfectly fine choking the life out of the state because he has no idea what life is like for real people.

Along with all of the other corrupt-o-crats who run the state, they are planning on destroying the state economically. They have a measure on the fall ballot to raise the state income tax dramatically with a "progressive" tax instead of a flat tax as it currently is. Chicago is talking about doubling all of its current fees and taxes. And as yet, no government employees have been furloughed or taken a pay cut.

NO

the worst treatment thru this has been by the D (and DeWine!) governors in the swing states that went for Trump!

WI, MI, OH, PA - we have had the most restrictions and essentially been persecuted by our Governors as punishment for our votes in 2016!!!

I live within a few miles of Very Blue states - NJ, DE, and MD. I go there to shop and stuff b/c they are NICE. the restrictions there are less! the people are being treated MUCH better than we are in PA! and all of those states have worse COVID situations than we do!

Please remember - the governors of OH, PA, MI and WI are working together in an Op! an op to CRUSH us so we don't "vote incorrectly" in 2020 - or worse, push us to mail in voting that will be CORRUPT

Wife and I watched some of "The Plot Against America." An alternate history 'what-if' had Lindbergh ran for pres in 1940 and won. The intro song is hauntingly similar to a Nazi rally march. After a lyric search, it turns out it came from Dick Powell and was used in the early 1930s FDR work recovery program. The 2nd vid I came across on YouTube even had the NRA banner with an eagle logo. My liberal wife thought it was Nat. Rifle Association. But then I remembered the National Recovery Administration. The show itself is a bit scary when many of the viewers arent up to the historical accuracy of that era.

For example, the claim that they were in "hot pursuit"; the shooters themselves have now admitted that was not true. The entire case for not charging them rests heavily on that lie. Also, the offense was NOT committed "in their presence", as that statement alleges, they have admitted that as well.

That statement is a fascinating example of a document that is guaranteed to permanently end the career of the official who wrote it. He might even go to jail for it.

from eastern NC. The best BBQ comes from Lexington in the west. We need

Posted by: Puddin Head

for sure the best slaw. We could argue the best que but I never had it in the west. I know a place in eastern NC that has the best slaw, que, stew and even fried chicken. The fried chicken was a revelation because that is not even fair. I never thought of having it but once I did I was ashamed that I had never ordered. it.

It would be a dick move at this point to not mention the place. Quint does not roll that way. And yes, I mentioned it before with the same plaudits ages ago. It is Parker's bbq in Wilson NC.

if you have any W., NC picks, I would love to hear about them. The thing I love about Parker's is it is the furthest thing from trendy you could imagine. Maybe it has changed over the years but for some reason I doubt it. It is in very old school NC tobacco country. The employees are friendly and treat you right. In some ways it is a throwback to a different age. i like everything about the place.

That's why people should remake bad movies with great concepts instead of great movies.

I've always felt like Colossus: The Forbin Project probably fit the mold.

Another thing that can be done is to transplant stories into new cultural spaces, like the remake of Infernal Affairs that became The Departed. They're pretty much the same movie except Boston instead of Hong Kong.

I'm not a lawyer, but I can't see how anything can be labeled "murder" if a death occurred without a motive or a crime.

The two white guys were trying to apprehend and detain a suspect in multiple break-ins in that neighborhood. One being a former law officer.

Apparently, while trying to keep the suspect from running away while the police were coming, Arbery struggled with the younger white guy over the gun. It went off and Arbery was killed.

Accidental death or, in the extreme, manslaughter.

Short story, she's not a spy. Never was, had no connection the Russian intelligence community. She's an academic, having written a book about Stalin era spy stuff, she met Flynn once. He was interested in her research, so she exchanged a few emails with him over the years.

Key point: If they really thought she was a spy, why is it she ONLY ever heard from reporters (the usual suspects), and never, not once, from anyone working in intelligence? Here or anywhere else.

That statement is a fascinating example of a document that is guaranteed to permanently end the career of the official who wrote it. He might even go to jail for it.

Posted by: t-bird at May 11, 2020 12:16 PM (1fg6a)

Sorry but Trump gave the governors the basis and justification for starting the lockdowns and was in support of same. I like the strategy of subsequently putting it all on the governors but then he contradicted that by slamming Georgia.

I'm just a bystander at this point hoping that the economy can come back and that the Dems don't win the Presidency or Senate. Hope for the best prepare for the worst.

579 That's why people should remake bad movies with great concepts instead of great movies.

I've always felt like Colossus: The Forbin Project probably fit the mold.

Another thing that can be done is to transplant stories into new cultural spaces, like the remake of Infernal Affairs that became The Departed. They're pretty much the same movie except Boston instead of Hong Kong.

More than once, when Mike and Jay are reviewing a film, they'll note the bad choices they made, and will come up with ideas that, had the movie made them, it might have been watchable.

On occasion they've said they might do that. Remake something that is begging for a more intelligent process. If they had the scratch, that is.

-Sure, sure, I follow

-And we are going to go full press on this, the works, the whole shooting match

-I don't like where this is going

-We need you to give us 80 new recipes involving miracle whip by Monday!

-EIGHTY? That's three days over the weekend, boss!

-They don't have to be any damned good, nobody is going to even see most of them.

-Well, okayy..

from eastern NC.

------------------------------------
Lexington has four or five great joints. My favorite is the BBQ Center. Western BBQ slaw is drizzled with pork drippings, which is not bad, but you want a clean sweet slaw to cleanse your palatte before eating more BBQ. They also have Cheer Wine in Western Carolina. Sun Drop, too.

I won't lie to you, I never do. Most chain fried chicken is just ok at best. Popeyes can be good, Roy Rogers can be good, but really they can never be great. i mentioned a place upthread and I realize it is off the beaten path for most, but not if you go up and down 95 on the reg. But the difference in the product is striking. There have to be other great fried chicken places. It would be a nice thread to discuss them and let people know.

"One last thing about Parkers's, i am talking the original location. I don't know about the new places. But also try the corn sticks. I hope it hasn't changed as i have not been there in years. It was always the same when I did frequent the place, and that is a good thing.

613 How to tell the difference between a blunder and malfeasance.

A person is walking down the street, stumbles into an old lady knocking her down. Was it a blunder or malfeasance? If it was a blunder the person will be confused, surprised, apologetic, and try making up for their error. If it is malfeasance the person will have a plausible story to tell you - it will place the blame everywhere but upon him - somebody shoved him, there was a crack in the sidewalk etc. People who do things deliberately always have their asses covered.
Greg Abbott blundered in his response to the Whu Flu. In the case of Andrew Cuomo, he is either a psychopathic serial killer, or he was trying to run up the body count in nursing homes for political reasons when he ordered nursing homes to take Covid-19 patients; his actions were not blunders.
