The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Is progressivism the political philosophy of misplaced priorities? Obviously it is also the purview of the masturbatory fantasies of every budding dictator, who giggles with glee at the prospect of sending the jack-booted thugs of the state to enforce increasingly ridiculous edicts, all in service of their ultimate goal...power over the People. Examine most of the grand schemes of the Left over the past three generations and one will discover some spectacularly misdirected efforts. Gun control leaps to mind, where the thousands of byzantine laws are directed not at the miscreants who would misuse weapons, but at the law-abiding citizens who are exercising their God-given, natural rights to self defense and protection against those despots who would steal their rights!

Fast forward from 1968 to 2020, and the same tired stupidity reigns supreme. Instead of protecting those who are most at risk from Sino-Lung-Rot, the elites, in their imagined infinite wisdom decided to focus their fascistic power grab on those who are least threatened by it, and leave to their own devices the most vulnerable among us.

Blue State Governors Lied, Thousands of Nursing Home Residents Died

Over 7,000 of the country’s coronavirus deaths emerged out of nursing homes.

Of the 4,377 coronavirus deaths in New Jersey, over 1,700 died due to infections in nursing homes. That nearly 40% of coronavirus deaths in one of the hardest hit states took place in nursing homes casts a stark light on the misplaced priorities of blue states battling the pandemic by locking down houses of worship and small businesses, while putting few to no resources into protecting nursing home residents.

Lest you think that nothing much can be done, I have first-hand experience with a facility that was proactive and took Kung Flu seriously. But they have the resources to deal with it effectively, going beyond the state mandates. And those mandates are scattershot and chaotic. So State Troopers patrol the parking lots of state parks, and arrest peaceful protesters. State administrators write arcane and insane rules governing face masks to be used by the healthy, while our most vulnerable and most in need of finite government resources die in their beds in understaffed nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Meanwhile our hospitals are furloughing employees because the expected (by the elites) tsunami of Commie-Flu cases never appeared, but they were told to cancel everything else, including cancer surgeries and cardiovascular procedures!

Yes...they worship at the altar of power, but they also focus their attentions on exactly the wrong things. It is a toxic combination of arrogance, power and stupidity, and it has come close to destroying us.

At least their philosophical antecedents could do a few things well...Mussolini was famous for getting the trains to run on time. The current crop of authoritarians can't balance a checkbook or manage to keep the streets clean.

And they want to run healthcare in America? Our experience of the last few months should be the final nail in the coffin of single-payer, government-run medicine in America.

But it won't be...

The flaw in that theory is that producers will just stop until the water is safe to jump back in. Someone will gamble on the cycle being ready next go around. All signals point to resumption of work in May. Someone will be prepared to fill the need.

Obama commie Van Jones made the amazing statement yesterday that Brian Kemp opened up barber shops, hair and nail salons "because our people will get sick and die."

My husband's barber for the past 19 years is a white woman who owns the shop, my salon is owned by a gay, white man, and my stylist is a white woman. Many of the nail salons around here are owned and run by Asian women.

But go with the racist angle, Van.

How can the Guvnors prove there was a clear and present danger to walking in a park?

People weren't dropping in the streets, and as real data is collected, mostly sick old people are the only ones that are at serious risk. But they are anyway.

48 One thing to keep in mind about the progs, which we tend to forget. It's not government they are enamored of, it's control. Government is just the usually most direct means of implementing it. But as we see with tech companies, and elsewhere, if there is another means, they will embrace it.

Government is of course the natural first place to look, its powers being so vast (even when theoretically limited.) But if a private college's administration, or a home owners' association will do; well, on that point they are not dogmatic. Quite flexible in fact. And that is one of our weaknesses, in that we often have our guns (and our eyes) fixed on the wrong target.

It's depressing to reflect on how often we've been outmaneuvered.

Oh yes, an historical quibble. Law was one place the Byzantines were not "Byzantine" in the usual sense. Actually, that description more closely fits English law than the Code of Justinian.

51 Trump has come in for criticism because of his opposition to Brian Kemp's plan to reopen Georgia. I wonder, though, it this isn't a bit of strategery. If he opposes it, and things go badly, he isn't to blame. However, if he opposes it and things go well, nobody will remember his opposition, so he's covered. At this point, I think the best we can do is limited openings those who want to, and we'll see how it goes. IOW, the states will once again be the experiments, which is what we need now.

113 Just read an interesting take on Kemp and the re-opening vis-à-vis Trump's comments.

Apparently Kemp has "mandated" that businesses open.
This means that they must open even if they have no customers. (Think restaurants and still keeping the dining rooms closed.) Business that were eligible for interrupted business insurance (never heard of that) can no longer receive payment. Landlords can now demand payment. Workers earning unemployment can no longer file so they must go back to work or be laid off. If laid off, then that tab for that is with the employer.

Anyone know more about this?

Sweden and other places showed that letting it run its course, with moderate precautions, was the right course. Gates had war-gamed thsi pandemic scenario, with an aim to establishing Globalist UN authority OVER the nation state and state level decisions, and over all sovereign rights.

imo it goes directly toward harming free enterprise in the US (and Germany and UK) ... as Fauci fully defended his friend the Marxist terrorist China owned leader of the W.H.O.. That's actually a good policy from U of D. If you look at presidents, you'll find that their records are sealed for a minimum of five years after they leave office, but can be sealed for up to twelve years.

If you're looking at when Biden retires from public life, I think we'll be able to see those records after 21 Jan 2021.

That being said, I wonder if we'll see what Obama's shenanigans pulled regarding Flynn after 20 Jan 2022, or did he have those sealed for another seven years after that?

This is an important point. The siren call of socialism (or any of the collectivist/statist philosophies) is that of competence. The expert-class technocracy has this as its *only* real argument in its favor.

The concept - and it is alluring if you're not too committed to the opposite messy (but free) small-state/subsidiarity concept - is that people who are supremely competent, who really know what they're doing, will make the hard decision and that society will benefit from their planning and execution on society's behalf. But it doesn't work that way and this is writ large during this pandemic morass. There have been various data points prior (like most things the state touches, for example), but this is a big and loud one.

If they want to propose an exchange of liberty for centralized competence, they had better be competent. They are not competent. Every day of my life, the state has been less competent than the day before. Why should I exchange my liberty - which is real - for their competence when their competence is fake? A lie?

Obama commie Van Jones made the amazing statement yesterday that Brian Kemp opened up barber shops, hair and nail salons "because our people will get sick and die."

My husband's barber for the past 19 years is a white woman who owns the shop, my salon is owned by a gay, white man, and my stylist is a white woman. Many of the nail salons around here are owned and run by Asian women.

But go with the racist angle, Van.

170 I remember working for big corp in the aftermath of the '86 oil crash, when thousands of layoffs across the industry were happening weekly. One friend of mine, who was on the "management track" and was always a big suck-up, got called over to the head regional office, they said they had some work to do. He was happy, because he thought he could prove how loyal he was. So he got there and they told him, well we've got 27 layoffs we need you to process today, call them in, go through their paperwork, tell them their options.

It was a dirty, demeaning job, having to call in a long line of people who needed this pay and who's lives were now being wrecked, but he did it faithfully. And at the end of the day he said "you know I only processed 26 men today" and they said "oh yeah, well you're #27. Here's your paperwork, Bye."

that was about the point when I realized that all big corps were evil. I was able to keep my job with them for about 3 years after that, but I hated them for every minute of it.

There is an overwhelming Hubris to Progressive thought. They actually believe that 'perception is reality'. They believe that they can not only reprogram Human Nature, but Reality itself.

Thus ALL of progressive end goals ignore that basic things of human nature, like sex differentiation, somehow believing that if they convince people that Men and Women are the 'same' it will somehow change the physical reality that we are put together differently, and thus have different strengths and weaknesses.

Progressives Covid response shows that very Hubris. They don't understand the world around them, and thus can't counter what the world actually does.

So, they get bitch slapped by reality. Problem is, that when they are in power, that bitch slap hits others too.

It depends on how you define "work." They do help prevent you from spreading viruses through exhaling. They help to some degree to protect you from the environment, but less so.

If you're an asymptomatic carrier, it can help prevent you from spreading anything. On the downside, though, if you're asymptomatic then you may well have a minor strain - a strain that it might be beneficial to spread as it may help with immunity against more severe strains and lessen their effects.

But mandating them for all people is typical overreach and it empowers the Karens to go nuts on anyone who doesn't.

224 This is completely OT, but that reminded me of my HS
years. Now, those were late 60s through 1971. That is, the very nadir
of barbershops' popularity. But one in my home town came up with the
solution. They hired an EXTREMELY hot girl for the job. Suddenly guys
decided haircuts were not such a bad idea after all.

Which just confirmed my father's belief that he had discovered the
Philosopher's Stone, in that all male actions can be so explained.

Posted by: Eeyore at April 28, 2020 11:41 AM (ZbwAu)

Back in the early '80's, some selfless entrepeneur in Calgary opened
a topless haircut shop, in which haircuts were given by well-endowed
young ladies with minimal training as barbers, and even more minimal
upper-body clothing.

It did not last long, got shut down by the city, and I missed out, being out in the bush at the time.

Same time period in Houston, with the explosion of 'gentleman's clubs' was a nearby place called Hairem. Dressed in diaphanous I Dream of Jeanie outfits, the lady barbers were uniformly young, fit, shapely, quite attractive, and stacked.
Only got there once before it was shut down.

Yeah, not so long ago that was sacrosanct.

Back in the fifties, Gene Kleiner and his crew bailed out on Shockley Semiconductor to found Fairchild.

Now, everyone in the electronics business knew that Bill Shockley, while brilliant, was a paranoid lunatic who treated his other brilliant employees like dirt, and consequently harmed his own research badly. Common knowledge that he was out of control.

It didn't matter. They were still branded "the Traitorous Eight," and if they hadn't been doing groundbreaking work that customers ABSOLUTELY HAD to have, they likely would have been destroyed by being frozen out.

"Leaving the firm," simply wasn't done in those days. It was considered the height of unprofessional behavior to do so.

But it would also help businesses and take a huge burden away from business owners.

295 The idea behind masks is to help reduce the droplet spread of asymptomatic carriers on surfaces. Or respiratory droplets from being in close contact with someone , such as standing in line, sitting in a medical waiting room, etc.
My physician's office has had masks in boxes sitting in the entry way for several years to help stop the spread of flu and common cold to those of us there for non respiratory issues.

The major screwup on masks was when the brilliant CDC, Fauci, and Birx were screaming at the beginning of the pandemic that masks "don't prevent the spread" and at the same time decrying that the public buying up masks would deplete the supply to health care workers "who absolutely must have them".

That is BS doublespeak. If masks don't work, why bother having health care workers wear them? It's a redundant question, because masks DO work. But now there is a lot of people who think they don't work from that initial damnation of wearing or buying them.

The CDC knew we likely had a shortage of masks, and they also thought that the virus was only being spread by obviously sick individuals.
Which ended up being incorrect.

The people who keep screaming and stomp around pronouncing that they will not wear a mask, no one can make them, this is a free country etc. are no different, IMO, than the anti vaxers . They have a belief and no one or no actual science is going to change that belief system.

Wearing a mask for a few months in a public setting in which distancing from other humans at six feet for the majority of the time isn't easy to do is such a small thing to do to help stop the spread of this virus. I mean, who the hell really wants to come down with the flu, a cold, o Covid 19, even though all three are unlikely to kill most people.

"It's past time for government to step WAY back and turn the private sector loose."
Posted by: irongrampa at April 28, 2020 12:02 PM (KATBx)

If the private sector could be cut loose, that would be great. However, it can't happen.

The government stopped the economy. Millions of people who were solidly in the middle class are not going to be called back to work. A lot of small businesses will not reopen. All through no fault of the individuals.

You can't just say "OK, all clear. Go back to what you were doing".

Right now, the government is on a path to spend 4 to 6 trillion on ill-conceived programs. As you can see from Harvard and Shake Shack getting the money, it's not being distributed in the most beneficial way. As always, with complex programs the well connected get theirs and the regular guy who has played by all the rules gets nothing (nevergiveup).

The only way for the government to step back and have the economy take off running is for it to make a bold effort to funnel enough money into a total reset. I've laid out such a program that is totally transparent and extremely hard for big business and the banks to cheat on.

It's time to really consider what could be.

311 I hate to credit Jim Cramer but he's the first economic pundit to agree with one of my pet theories, so shout out to Cramer.

Banks manipulated the queue for PPP loans, particularly guilty are large banks, and most particularly guilty is Bank of America (who openly said so). The customers banks put first in line were also customers who owed the bank money on credit lines. Stated policy.

So, BofA made sure they got PPP loans, which the companies then could use to repay more expensive bank lines. This contravenes the purpose of the program, which was to fund small business payrolls, and is the most screaming example I can imagine of self-dealing right in the midst of the pandemic crisis.

I hope this manipulation breaks a law of some kind because we should jail the bankers who organized this.

She said that these people who are receiving unemployment with the Fed kicker and don't want to go back to work, cannot stay on unemployment and refuse a call back to work UNLESS they can demonstrate via a medical exam, letter, etc. that they have a reasonable medical issue that precludes them from being able to risk getting infected. They would also have to demonstrate that there workplace would have a higher than normal risk of employee infections, etc.

Simply saying you are afraid of Coronavirus won't cut it. Unfortunately, the dummy interviewing her didn't ask about many states mandates that workers can't be retaliated against for fearing getting infected.

I would hate to live with the fear that you live in.

Thank goodness I don't.

369 PDT tweeted that this corona nightmare will have a quote "miracle" ending. He knows something about it that we don't know, and there must be a damn good reason why we're not being told, yet.

Trust.

371 I wonder if the reason why states didn't give a rat's patootie about nursing homes is because it's a quick solution to lightening the load for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid? I've been watching too many paranoid scenario movies.....

372 Here in Moscow on the Lower Colorado, you can find Texas long grain rice for $8.99 for 25lbs at Costco.

It was $7.99 just a couple weeks ago. Limit 1 bag though.

373 What's that you say, "progressives" enacting policies that result in the deaths of the elderly, reducing the costs of providing not just financial support (retirement benefits), but also social services (especially healthcare)?
Who would ever expect something like that!
I mean, other than people who studied history and knew about how "progressive", "socialist" governments have long embraced principles of cost-effectiveness when it comes to providing actual care for the population, not to mention overt eugenics-level policies of dealing with the disabled.
Totally, what's that word I'm looking for?
Incon-something-or-other.
