On my way to work this morning (8:05 AM) from NoHo into Van Nuys via Victory Blvd.....hit a stop light just past Van Nuys Blvd....glanced to my right aaaannnndddd, just up the block, 7 to 8 LAPD officers trying to corral some crazed tweaker screaming and yelling with a shopping cart full of the most recent "Shinny Things".....of notice to me at least.....none of the boys and girls in blue...
were wearing masks....of any sort.
And I thought....most odd. Then the light changed and further thought was erased to focus on driving in what seems to be heavier traffic than what I've seen last 2 weeks.

I believe Kim is the family name. A lot of Asian cultures go family name first, given name last. For whatever reason we seem to leave Korean names as is I guess? But like Japanese we switch them. So the creator of Mario is named Shigeru Miyamoto is how we write and say his name in English but in Japanese he would be addressed as Miyamoto Shigeru.

I LOVE the Chronicles of Prydain. Our library had three or four re-issued paperback books and couldn't afford to order the others. I asked for them at Christmas one year, but they were out-of-print IIRC and instead I got The Lord of the Rings boxed set.
The only Nesbit I read was her "Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare" which the librarian dug up while looking for Lambs' adaptations. Arthur Rackham illustrations throughout.
The one thing I really desired in my childhood was MORE BOOKS, so I've been playing catch-up ever since.

I second that. As you undoubtedly know, C.S. Lewis books are going to have quite overt Christian themes. As fo interesting an adult, the Narnia books were written at a time when children were better educated, so I think you may be pleasantly surprised. I read them for the first time in my 50s and found them very good.

When I was in college I had a summer job where i worked on an assembly line alongside convicts who were close to parole. You would chat while you worked. It was sad because these people had no sense of responsibility, no maturity, and no self restraint. And yes, once they were released they were likely to get into trouble and be back in within a short time. Add to that substance abuse issues. They were the type of people who, if they won a million dollars in the lottery, would be broke within a year.
Anyone connected with the prison system could have told Mayor DeDumbass what would happen.

For Montgomery, I also highly recommend The Blue Castle. I'd consider it a more adult book (not in the bow chicka wow wow sense, in the sense that it explores more mature themes) than the Anne books (which I do love). The Blue Castle is really hard to describe, but I'll give you a bit that I understand very well: "They [the main character, whose name is Valancy, and her mom and elderly cousin who lives with them] talked of the things they always talked of. Valancy did not wonder what would happen if she tried to talk of something else. She knew. Therefore she never did it." I feel like that at my extended family get-togethers all the time. And: "Yet she was not sorry that she had done it, only that she had offended her mother. Things would be so uncomfortable until she was forgiven. Mrs. Frederick was one of those women who can make their anger felt all over a house. Walls and doors are no protection from it."
I realize I'm not selling the book at all with those...I can only say, I read that book a further 3-4 times in the first month I discovered it, and I still reread it frequently. I would have had a hard time not naming a daughter Valancy had I had one.

After getting in an argument with a bunch of buddies on Discord today I'm just sitting here dejected.
Trump can't win this. It was tailor made to defeat him and given legitimacy by unimpeachable scientific and medical "experts" who will undoubtedly be wrong in the long run but you can't actually say that - like I tried today, and likely lost friends in the process.
The fence-sitting Trump voter that would have pulled the lever for him pre-COVID is not going to remember the amazing economy. They're not going to remember the disengagement from foreign wars or increased border security. They're going to think one of two things. Either we were ill prepared, or we responded poorly to the crisis.
It's a no-win situation trying to open the country up again.
Grrr. It's going to be really brutal these next couple years suffering through a Joe Biden or whoever replaces him after he finally has a stroke.

I've come to the belief that we need something like Amish life for some people that just can't function in the modern world.
There is a limit to how irresponsible one can be when, if you do nothing for the summer you are going to slowly starve, in the dark, all winter long.
I think it would likely be a better sentence or even full life for non-violent types that have basically no self control.

I went to a wedding at a UU church in Ann Arbor. NEVER again. Before the service, I had finished decorating the pews and started flipping through the songbook. Every sort of Christian hymn was in there, bowdlerized. At the time, I was agnostic at best, but it was so like a Bradbury novel, I was disgusted.

He will win the popular vote unless they run up totals with fake mail-in votes in deep blue states. Which is mostly what mail-in is about *this* cycle. That's why you'll see it in places like Cali, NY and Illinois. It's also a good test run for their cheating in future cycles.

Our hospitals here in MS are supposedly allowing elective procedures starting next Monday. MY BFF works in the operating rooms, so he should know and that is what he told me yesterday. I dunno, maybe it's on a hospital by hospital basis? I haven't read state news yet today.

Just got a notice that I have to go back to work on the 27th, even though my museum is still closed. What the f***, I've been working at home since March 22nd, with periodic trips in to work to check on our buildings and pick up more work.
I'm going to propose that I can work half time at our closed building and halftime at home. I don't have a huge commute but this is been saving us bucks when I don't have to drive a 30 mile round-trip everyday.

The good news personally was that so far the return to some meds are dealing with the issue.
Also of interest was what the dr. told us about crudflu deaths and incidence.
1)Worst week was the week before the shutdown imposed (consistent with what I've always found with crises--they reach a peak just before the "remedy" is begun/imposed.
2)Never had any shortages in PPE, beds, ICU or vents
3)50%+ of deaths in individuals with diabetes
4)Current number of admitted patients close to only 25% of the peak number a bit over a month ago.
Also read separately that 8003 of the total Crudflu deaths as of 4/18 occurred among nursing home other older folks residences. This is nearly 25% of the deaths.
Why did the govs (and Fauci/Birx for that matter) not look at the EARLY issues in Washington state with nursing homes and address that issue earlier?
Just shows that "experts" focus often on the wrong issues not to mention solutions.

I've heard it's not that simple, I don't know how our debt is structured, but someone tried to explain it to me (and I don't understand financial instruments well; I only recently came to understand the difference between discount and interest) and in the end said 'it would be like pushing a rope.'
I suspect we may have some leverage to stop paying on debts, but again, I don't know how that's structured -- we sell bonds or tbills or whatever, can we revoke them? Again, I don't know.

At our local ALDI, it's 100% mask usage, and most masks looked decent (i.e. no bandanas.)
I suspect Marylanders are as ready as they're going to be to get back to normal, so long as they're willing to do contact tracing if infected.
The masks thing I think does a lot to restore confidence that you're not going to get the bug or be given it, which economically is important.

It'd make everyone's eyes glaze over quickly to try and go into much detail, but the "debt" isn't like the US went to China and signed a mortgage or something like that. China owns a whole bunch of Fed Securities, things analagous to T-Bills and what not. We can't default on some without defaulting on all of them, and that would mean defaulting on all US securities in the world. Not a good move, because one of the tiniest, least consequential side effects of that is that the Federal Social Security System would completely collapse overnight.
Defaulting on the debt to China is a cute idea for children to play around with. It's not something for adults to discuss.

The US Treasury knows the owner of every single T bill, note, and bond out there. The way it works, basically, in terms of international trade is we buy a bunch of shit from China. We pay them in dollars, the international reserve currency.
China's central bank takes those dollars. They'll need some of the directly, but they can't do much with those dollars otherwise, so they want to buy some interest bearing assets with those.
So they buy Ts, and that sits on the asset side of the Chicom central bank's balance sheet.
So, we buy shit with dollars, they loan them back to us, and we buy more shit.
The holder of every single penny of US debt is known. Every issue has something called a CUSIP, which is a unique ID. We could selectively repudiate any of those CUSIPs.

I have yet to find out how much official, sovereign debt China holds (ie German bonds, Frog bonds, UK, etc, etc), but I stumbled on something else.
China is doing a lot of predatory lending to 3rd world nations. Africa, South America and other shit holes. And this largely secret. Off the official books. A total of $5T, half of which is undocumented (and therefore an estimate).
China's own govt debt stands at around $6T or so in US dollars in 2018. What it is now is probably around $8T. Chicoms don't report things too transparently or accurately.

I asked my friend did the home tell you she had a cough, or fever or had developed pneumonia?
He said no.
Just called and said his mom passed in the night due to Covid.

When I first bought my house in 1981 my property tax was about $200/year. They run about $1,000/year now. The thing about taxes is that they always increase every year regardless of the economy or anything else.

Nothing else makes any sense.
Because the effects of closing large swaths of the global economy and clogging up the the input/output vectors should have been apparent from the outset.

Let me be clear, I have been talking to liberal democrats from Oakland,

and Sacramento. Most of my Dem donors are unhappy that they go 3 cents

Had a local news story with a volunteer travel nurse sending in her tape from NYC, about how awful the 12 hour shifts were and how difficult it was on her family. They played big chunks of her submittal.
At the end, they quickly announced she'd signed up for another twenty-one days, and went on to their next tragic story. A "you've got to be fucking kidding me" might have dropped out of my mouth in the middle of the waiting room.

Did my part to support the golf course and the local taqueria yesterday. Even shook hands with the guys we were paired with like normal folks.
Then I cam home and found my escrow review statement in the mail. Property taxes went up and I'm short about $950, so either I pay in full by June or my payment goes up accordingly. I feel bad for folks who are on fixed incomes or who have no way to pay for an increase like that. But hey, we have new landscaping in the medians and a woke city council.

My favorite was when the banks would sell my mortgage. The new bank always seemed to "re-calculate" my escrow - which always meant they wanted more months in advance. I went from six to eighteen months held back. All perfectly damn legal.

The Ace Hardware that we shop at has one way in and one way out. Big old plexiglass shield at the check where the clerk will not handle your purchases, they scan the item through the shield. Also they will not sell any bagged items like top soil, mulch, softener salt etc that sit outside. We went to Lowe's and bought those items there.
