Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Kick back and enjoy the world of pets and animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

This stay in shelter is getting out of hand. H/T ibguy

Not quite a pet. But, wildlife.

kandilion.jpg

There was a lion in my friends neighborhood yesterday. They tranquilized it and moved him. He's a juvenile male. These aren't my photos so you can't use them, just thought I'd share. He also texted me video of the mountain lion jumping a fence and running across the street. They are very shy so getting to see one is rare. I've only seen one in the wild. - Kandi

Meet The PetMorons

Tiger_Lily_montage.jpg

In 2006, I heard this weird intermittent screeching, screaming noise
that seemed to inch closer and closer. After a couple days of it, I
found this screaming shivering gray kitty under a rose bush in my
yard. Poor little feller. I washed it off - HEY! It's white and
orange! Took it to the vet, fattened it up, all that. I had two cats
at the time that DID NOT like this kitten, really seriously no they are
not going to get along. So I found it a home with some reasonably rich
that were looking for a siamese. ."Howse about a nice colorpoint
instead?". . tried to get them to adopt me, too, but no dice. Anyway,
Straycat found a very nice home. They named her Tiger Lily and spoiled
her rotten. They even went out and bought another colorpoint so she'd
have proper company. She was little Miss Personality from day one and I
am so pleased they send me pics from time to time. If she had a
pedigree, this would be a show cat, I'm sure of it. $400 dollars and up
.. I can't imagine how she ended up under a rose bush.

So here she is in all her glorious beauty. Thank you for the pet
thread, it is always so cheering!

- Persnickety, occasional poster

It is stories like this that make the Pet Thread so cheerful. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. She's a cutie.

Max has been diagnosed with heart-worm and in the hands of Vet. He's only seven months old.

He and his brother were abandoned in a dumpster as kittens, that must have been when he picked up the infection.
Good thing we canceled the cruise we were going to go on, we'll need the money now for his medical care.

Pray for him, he's a good kitty!

John

Hopefully this handsome little guy is on his way to full recovery. I'm positive the Horde will say their prayers.

Flynn Sadie 2.jpg

Hello again from the small town of Lilburn Georgia. We're all going a little nuts here with stay at home orders, but spring has arrived and it's warm and nice now that most of the nasty pollen has washed away, so what a great reason to be outside. I've actually met a few more neighbors down the street while walking Flynn and Sadie Mae, and I've lived here since 1993! Anyway, attached are pictures my two chi-wow-wows. They're so much fun and are quite bonded to each other and me too. This picture is from my back porch on yet another calm and peaceful Sunday morning. Thanks for all your work and dedication - AoS Pet Thread is such a weekly joy and an oasis of happiness amidst all events that besiege us at present. Thanks, Dana

You're welcome Dana. And thank you for submitting this photo of your pets. They certainly seem content, sweet and ever vigilant.

This is Sasha. We inherited her when my sister-in-law passed away some years ago. She took awhile getting comfortable with us but now she feels free to take up most of my chair! She is vocal when it’s time to eat and loves to be scratched behind the ears.

I’m a lurker mostly but I love the Pet Thread!! - MyMind

We are sorry to hear how Sasha came about to being your pet. She certainly seems quite at home with you folks. A very pretty cat.

New challenges working from home during stay at home orders.

My former spouse, (still my good friend), can no longer work from her
company office and must now work out of her home office. Her work day
is full and consists of many business conference telephone calls as
well as video calls.
In addition to home schooling our two school age boys, she also has to
contend with her dog Izzy, who is not used to her being home in the
day, a sweet two year old 2nd generation mini Bernedoodle.
With new and differnt sound in the house of which Izzy is not
familiar, she is under a lot of stress and doing a lot of barking at
these new strange sounds.
Here is a picture of my former spouse trying to teach Izzy she must
not bark while she is on the phone working.
PS: My former spouse approves of my submitting this photo of Izzy for
possible inclusion in the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks,
Mel

Wow, Izzy has thumbs and can type. How awesome is that!!! Cute photo thank you for sharing with us today.

This is my home office supervisor, Moonie. She was abandoned and abused before we got her about 10 years ago. Since she moved in she's been queen of the house and lets my husband know every chance she gets which one of them is low man on the totem pole. - Kris

That little sweetie is not the low man on the totem pole? That's hard to believe. You must have a very understanding hubby. Thanks for the submission.

So how many snacks were you holding for that pose? Great photo! Glad the rescue is working out well.

Love the pet thread!! Please post this when you have room. Thanks!

This is Angus Mac, my 16-year-old tuxedo cat. He is blind, from a herpes virus at birth. I rescued him from being euthanized at nine weeks. Vet said he had a tiny bit of vision in his one blue eye (kitten pic) but that soon failed; the other "eye" is only scar tissue. From the start he was confident, has never known he has a problem. That first year he was a blind feline retriever; he'd chase the mousie by listening to it bounce, bring it back slinking like a panther, circle me once, and drop it to be thrown again. Sometimes he'd bring it to me and drop it, like a puppy, and I'd stop whatever I was doing and play. Then we had to remove the eye because it had gone black (it had long since lost vision) and the cornea was hurting him. That seemed to disorient him, because he would never play mousie again.

Angus's strong personality comes through in so many ways. He's vocal and bossy, and I'm expert at reading his body language. He listens contentedly to music, TV and conversations. Loves to prowl the back yard after rain, to smell things. He "cows" my young male tabby by climbing on top of him, and Linus allows it out of affection ("yeah, pops, you still got it, uh-huh"). Angus's purr is deep and quiet like a ship's engine--vroomm, vroomm. He's slow now, and we've had digestive issues, but vet says he's doing okay. I have other cats, but he's my baby and my grand old fellow, and it will break my heart when he goes. I'm hoping for another few years! - skywch

What an amazing story and what a big heart you have. It sounds like Angus has had a wonderful life. Thanks for sharing.

Dutchess is not doing well. The vet put on a harder cast for the broken bone in her hock. It's inflexible, so she has to try to get around on the other back leg, which is also weak. It's heartbreaking watching her drag herself along trying to do her business in the little pen we set up outside the door.

We may have to bite the bullet and have surgery (about $3500 worth) done to stabilize the broken bone. What we fear is that her other back leg may break as well.

If you have any thoughts to spare, please give one for our little girl, who has had nothing but problems her whole life.

14 (sigh) neighbors took old feral cat to vet! Yeah, kitty aids. Otherwise plan was to take in with their 2 indoor cats. They have a cat crate under cover on their porch with heating pad (been cold/rainy) for him. Hardly any teeth left. Was glad to hear vet didnt just say euthanise. Have seen cat deteriorate rapidly last year or so. Hear he used to rule the neighborhood for blocks, has scars to prove it. He still comes to my when open door begging (tho gets goodies regular at least 2 places). He got people liver spread last time. Poor old fighter.

She on a new pain med regime which is working. Doing some physical therapy. They recommend a water tub treadmill. This will be a challenge since she hates water. First bath I gave her she knocked me out of the tub and gave me a concussion when my head hit a cabinet.

27 We lost our beloved BearDog this morning. The last couple of years he's been having problems with his hips so we knew his time was coming. This morning, he had a stroke which left him blind and unable to walk or stand. My heart is broken.

He was a great dog, thought he could whoop any other dog's butt, no matter how big they were. He was our guard dog for many years, if you knocked on our door it sounded like Cujo was on the other side. But as soon as he knew that person was mommy or daddy-approved, he wanted all the scritches he could get.

This past year he moved 1500 miles with us and got to experience his own lawn (our place in Texas was pretty devoid of a yard) and 5 acres of woods to wander around in. His new favorite thing was laying in the lush grass and getting pets from mama.

We brought him home and buried him here on the property. He's now bouncing around with his brother Patton, who passed in 2018, chasing every squirrel he sees. He will be missed so much.

28 Our Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy was 4 months old ten days ago, and we have had her for almost three weeks now.

She is perfect in almost every way except not over the giardia (sp?) caused diarrhea we have been treating for ten days.

She has a weird behavioral trait that causes her to have intense "I want to go back home" anxiety whenever we attempt to walk her up the sidewalk from our home.

We have convined all her "let's go potty" walks to our yard and the yard-sized common-ground landscaped island in front of our home, but attempts to get her to walk on leash beyond that, result in her just refusing and not giving in.

I can carry her up five or six yard-lengths up the street, and upon setting her down, she pulls like a sled dog to go home.

Now, this is SW FL, with daily temps around 90. It doesn't seem to matter, though, because we get the same won't walk behavior at night or in the cooler pre-dawn hours.

39 This obviously isn't a pet but she's been hanging around my front yard lately. There will be lots of evidence after the snow melts. - Northernlurker

Speaking of animals hanging around homes, one of the benefits of being at home during the day and working from home right by my front window is I'll see all the animals go by that I normally do not see.

I've seen the usual squirrells and robins and cardinals. But for the first time I actually saw a bald eagle (!) the other day as well as a groundhog/woodchuck.

The former was at the tip top of this really tall tree right outside my apartment building and I saw it while taking trash out to the dumpster. Was perched at the top of the tree like it was lord of the apartment complex. Really amazing to see. I stared at it for a good five minutes and kept looking back at it, because I thought "that can't be a bald eagle, can it?! But it definitely was. And it was really cool.

Sadly, for some reason I didn't get my cell phone to take a picture of it. And when I looked out the next day to see if it had returned... it had not.

And then the groundhog/woodchuck was a surprise. I didn't even know they were in this area. I've seen raccoons in the area, but not groundhogs. Thing just waddled by the sidewalk in front of my door. Broad daylight, about 2pm in the afternoon, without a care in the world.

I wonder if wild animals are completely confused now with all us humans all staying inside our homes the past 1-2 months.

46 I love that picture with the dog promising not to bark when his human is on a conference call.

My Paisley is a very vocal dog--barking, grunting, trying to talk, groaning, all kinds of noise.
And she loves giving me a nose nudge to the elbow. So far she hasn't done that while I'm lifting a drink.

So maybe I should get her to write out "I will not nudge my human's elbow when he's taking a drink."

58 Greetings:

The highlight of this week's walkings was the brown tail hawk who came back (?) to town. He took some kind of small bird but then was attacked by a murder of crows (more than a dozen). As I was heading north he was holding his own on one side of a steep roof.

Coming back south several minutes later, he had relocated to the horizontal of a lamp pole where he was ripping apart feathers and flesh unmolested.

Not unusual for crows to attempt to murder a hawk. They're not usually successful but do make a quite racket.

Crows, in an avian justice way, are harassed by much smaller little black birds with yellow eyes.

Mine barks his ass off at them, and scares them away. He has a look of pure triumph when they run, as he is too small to be doing that. I can normally spot them if they are in the yard at night but not always.

Wow, interesting you say that. Because when I saw the bald eagle the other day, there was this loudmouth crow squawking up a damn storm the entire time a few branches away from the bald eagle.

I thought it odd, because I thought crows might be dinner for bald eagles and was wondering what the idiot crow was doing being so loud announcing its presence.

Now I wonder if the crow was trying to call his buddies to join him in going after the bald eagle.

66 I've lived the story of Tiger Lily. In '03 I was drying and detailing my car in an abandoned parking lot.

Up comes a lovely longhaired cat, less than a year old. How to describe her? She looked like a small puffball in cream, with grey stripes on head, legs, and tail, and the bluest eyes outside of a Siamese I'd ever seen. She was crying, clearly saying "I need human help NAOW!" She looked like a purebred, clearly somebody's lost cat. I waited, talking with her and petting her. Nobody came. I said, "Okay, I'll go back, get a carrier, come back for you, and we'll put an ad in the paper."

It didn't work out that way. I got into my car, and before I could shut the door she jumped in and onto my lap!

I drove her to Linda's, as my cat at the time was sick. We put an ad in the local paper and drove around to local vets. No response. So she became Linda's second cat: "Angelique," probably a Siberian, who lived to be about 11. Still the standard for beauty in cats. (Her personality turned out to be less than angelic, but that's another story.)

I've seen crows do that to hawks and ospreys but I think they squawk and holler to annoy the big raptor so the raptor will fly off.

Especially if the raptor just made a kill and was getting ready to fly home with the food they may leave some meat behind and crows like that.

Lucy would like me to post a reminder about topical anti inflammatories. Brand name Volteran, generic diclofenac. If you're like me and have some achy joints and use the stuff, make SURE your four legged friend does not rub against you where you applied it. They will lick their fur and it will harm them. Bigly.

Lucy says thank you for your attention.

74 Ra-Ra is still missing, still miss terribly the little monster.

Wednesday heard a cat talking outside, thought it was Ra-Ra since if he hears me in the house would immediately start talking to get attention and food.

Opened the door to find a full grown Siamese with gray Tabby face markings and ringed tail there under the carport. Gave them a bit of dry which was nibbled up quickly. Then my two remaining cats, Rhi and Isis, showed up and it was hissing at first sight from them. As I was sitting on the steps trying to calm my cats, the new kitteh kept talking and trying to make friends. Put some more food out for all the cats.

At one point as I was distracted by my cats chasing them since they ran inside, the newcomer zipped into the open door also. So was chasing the Siamese through the house. But amazingly she let me pick her up without a fuss or scratching. And managed to get all the cats back outside.

Unfortunately could not stay and try to mediate things any further because I had to go into work. Left more dry food out before leaving. Unfortunately since then have not seen the newcomer. Hope she found a good spot.

I don't know much about the show myself. Was Angelique the villain of the soap?

Angelique the cat, once she decided that Linda liked her, had an annoying habit. She'd leap into your lap and settle down. Then, if you shifted, even an inch, she'd growl on a rising note, like "Don't you DARE move --!" And then she wouldn't leave, but stayed put. A difficult female she was.

Well it certainly succeeded in annoying me and getting me to go back inside to my apartment. Not sure if it had the same success with the bald eagle.

But that's interesting. I know I have watched some nature shows in the past where they explained how vultures will follow along with certain animals to pick up the scraps from their kills. The last show I saw it was about some vulture that actually ate dead animals' bones whole. Apparently its digestive system was so acidic that it was able to easily break down the bones.

Elvis is a Treeing Tennessee Brindle. It's a small, relatively new breed that was made by breeding Coon Hounds with curs. I'd never heard of the breed until I adopted him a couple years ago.

I figured a Tennessee hound dog had to be Elvis.

105 So here's a question for fellow cat owners...

I adopted my pair of kitties about 4 months ago. They are coming up on about a year old. Male (Buddy) and female (Bella), brother and sister.

Both were really skittish in the beginning, but are progressing well on adapting and getting comfortable knowing that this is their furr-ever home.

Anyway, they have each developed their favorite toys. For the girl, she loves this small little stuffed mouse-like toy. Carries it around like it's her kill, bats it around, leaves it for me sometimes to play fetch with her, etc.

But what I can't figure out is that she'll take this thing in her mouth and carry it around and then start crying. At least is sound like crying. Starts off regular and then proceeds to get worse and then to the point where it sounds like she's dying or something.

I know she isn't, but I can't figure out why she's making those sounds. She only does it when playing with that little mousey toy.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 18, 2020 04:40 PM (Do5/p)

106 Birds story. I was walking out of work a few years ago. There is a courtyard surrounded by shops and restaurants below the office I worked in. It was early morning (0600) and nothing was open but the courtyard was crowded, with birds. LOTS of birds. All different kind of birds. Just sittin', watchin'. So I walk and watch and all at once they start flying towards a raven that had come looking for breakfast I guess. Anyway, all the birds that lived in that courtyard banded together and chased it away.

Maybe it's her kitten?

I had an older male cat that would do that with socks. Over the course of a half hour, he'd go upstairs, pull a sock out of the hamper, bring it downstairs, set it down, sing the song of his people, and then go up and do it again. If I could've trained the other cat to retrieve socks from his pile and put them in the hamper, it would've been like living in an Escher lithograph.

My late Maine Coon mix Arizona would do that with a little stuffed Pegasus that belonged originally to Mrs. Wolfus 2. At night I'd hear him thrashing it and growling a little out in the living room, and I'd tiptoe out and catch him playing with it when he was 8 or 9 years old. He'd immediately drop it and stalk off: "I wasn't playing with that! I'm too old for such things!"

Yours might have tooth or gum trouble, and it hurts her even as she plays. Or maybe she's just warning her roommate not to take it away from her.

I just got a cat. Four-year-old male. Some friends are expecting their fourth and the mom is kind of a freak and wanted the cat out of her way, but she cried when she left it with me. The cat got along great with the other three kids, was very tolerant of being picked up all cock-eyed by the baby and carried around. I think it misses the stimulation of a big family.

Anyway, it's over its initial trauma and I've ordered an air purifier. I want to rename it. It's a big orange cat with yellow-green eyes and they called it "Nacho," but Mexican doesn't work for me. Got any suggestions? He's mild-mannered and I think he's kind of smart. He dragged a washcloth out of my closet and uses it to cover up his food dish, I kid you not.

How about one of those Western states, the ones with corners? Wyoming or Arizona or Dakota.

Cats love manipulating objects. The late Tatiana loved to chase after a rubber ball and bring it back to me to continue the game, and she more than once pulled open a drawer to get to a toy she'd seen me put in there. Marie the Queen loved shiny things, like a crow, and would steal Linda's earrings.

I got Marie the black cat into it when we lived in Denver, and when she saw me take out the harness she'd run to the door crying.

150 Thank you for the feedback, all.

Huh, so maybe she's singing to it.

I'll have to pay attention next time to what she's doing when she starts the cry-meow-moan thing she does. She takes it around the corner from me into the hallway and starts it there. And the acoustics of the hallway make her sound even louder.

A lot of times I'll find it by the kitties' food dishes or their litter tray. Or I'll find it in the hallway bathroom, the door to which is always closed. Which means that she accidentally batted it under the door.

Anyone have any tricks for getting kitties to drink their water?

I don't think either of them are drinking the water from the water dish. So I bought a plug in waterfall drinking dish to entice them to want to drink, but I'm sure if they are using that either.

Buddy likes skim milk and 2% milk I have found. But I don't know if either of them drink much water.

167 For Clyde - my current cat, Boris, does the same with lizards . It's a rather hideous ree-oOOOoooww, and is usually a call to me to come play with her. She likes to bring lizards in, drop them, and then the two of us corral the dang things so I can put them back outside again. Twice, it was a snake and so now the cat door is no longer operational - if you're going to bring snakes in the house, you can just bang your head against the door until I feel like checking your mouth before letting you in. There ARE limits. She has a favored mouse toy, too, but doesn't make any noise with that, nor allow anyone else to play with it.

YES! That's it! I was struggling to figure out how to describe it, but that's it. And it gets deeper and more obnoxious the longer I go before responding to her.

Maybe that's what she's doing then. Wants me to come play with the mouse with her. She has started to sometimes like playing fetch with it. Usually she just carries it around, laying down then batting it all over the place, then grabbing it with her claw then putting it in her mouth and running around with it, making various sounds.

I'm hoping this is it now, because if she actually is singing or serenading the toy, she has an awful singing voice...

193 Clyde Shelton -- She's calling her kittens to come learn how to kill a mouse. Many, many moons ago, one of my cats had a litter of kittens. At the time, we lived directly across the street from a cornfield. When the kittens were a little more than a month old, George brought a live mouse into the house, plopped it down on the living room rug and called her kittens. It was hilarious watching those kittens try to wrangle that mouse. At least Georgie would bat it back into play every time it tried to stagger away. Going forward a few decades, I had a blind female cat, Khan. She would go out and catch mice, then make that same summoning call. All she summoned was the German Shepherd who would grab the mouse and swallow it whole.
