Israeli Professor: It Doesn't Matter If You Have Strict Social Distancing or None, Coronavirus Follows the Exact Same Pattern in All Countries

He says that imposing strict shutdowns like the US and no shutdown at all, as Sweden does, produces the exact same "curve."

None of this bullshit matters, his models say.

Professor Yitzhak Ben Israel of Tel Aviv University, who also serves on the research and development advisory board for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, plotted the rates of new coronavirus infections of the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Italy, Israel, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Spain. The numbers told a shocking story: irrespective of whether the country quarantined like Israel, or went about business as usual like Sweden, coronavirus peaked and subsided in the exact same way. In the exact, same, way. His graphs show that all countries experienced seemingly identical coronavirus infection patterns, with the number of infected peaking in the sixth week and rapidly subsiding by the eighth week.

The Wuhan Virus follows its own pattern, he told Mako, an Israeli news agency. It is a fixed pattern that is not dependent on freedom or quarantine. "There is a decline in the number of infections even [in countries] without closures, and it is similar to the countries with closures," he wrote in his paper.

Meanwhile, a new paper shows that lockdowns do nothing to "flatten the curve" -- all they do is delay the exact same outbreak pattern until six months later.

Which makes demands that the world remain in lockdown until 2022 (!!!!) all the more insane.

Given that the most passionate enthusiasts for a semi-permanent shutdown just happen to be partisan liberal Democrats and insanely butthurt NeverTrumpers (now also Democrats), one begins to suspect that the public health might not be the primary reason for these demands.

It doesn't help when the leftwing media just flat-out admits that Democrats are loving the political opportunities afforded by the economic collapse they engineered.

Oh, and, by the way:

The Trans Lobby wants you to remember that no matter how many old people are dying, the people most harmed by coronavirus are trans people who do not have coronavirus.

Yeah, people are being put into medical comas and getting tubes stuck down their throats for life support and have a 50/50 chance of dying thereafter, but you know who's really got it bad? A tranny calling ximself Unicorn Spacecraft Zeta who has to sit in awkward silence watching Home Improvement repeats with his dad.

Question: Is there any situation in which we are not demanded to spend all of our brain energy worrying about how it affects the only people who matter, the fucking Trans attention vampires?

If lockdowns do nothing, THEN HOW IS THE VIRUS JUMPING FROM PERSON TO PERSON.

Is it just in the breath?

Are only marginal people on the fringes of society who aren't social distancing the ones who spread it, lockdown or no lockdown?

25 I've been trying to explain to people in these SE AZ parts that quarantining healthy people is counterproductive in a pandemic. It extends the time before herd immunity can be developed. It destroys commerce and the economy. An economy doesn't just 'turn back on' after it is shut down, either.

I've had mixed success.

Posted by: ... at April 15, 2020 02:37 PM (FBu6l)

42 The models took into account full social distancing when they predicted 2.5 million dead.

And that phrase they kept tossing around, "flatten the curve" is not about reducing total infections and deaths overall, it's about doing the social distancing and other measures in order to spread the case load over a longer period of time so as not to overwhelm the system.

Per the models, we should of still had 2.5 million deaths but over an 8 month period instead of 4 month period.

And now they are having to resort to "new science" bending reality to fit their models.

And when they can't do that they start attacking critics as being anti-science and wanting people to die.

This is all a sick joke.

49 Medium had an article on a similar topic on April 12th:

We again find no meaningful correlation between speed of State wide shutdown versus projected total deaths. How can this be? Well, there may be much more important factors influencing the spread of the virus, including:
- Voluntary behavioral change of residents such as washing hands, staying away from large groups, not touching one's face, etc.
- Municipal level shut downs such as what happened in Texas. It may not make sense to treat a Dallas the same as a 200 person town.
- More measured closures such as restaurants but not all businesses
- Natural slow of viral spread, perhaps related to weather
Different health profiles of State residents

In other words, there is no correlation whatsoever that areas that locked down earlier are doing any better and the number of confounding variables is YUGE. But it doesn't seem to change that, according to this study, shutdowns appear to have no correlation with reduced infection or death rates - whether across the board or only for high-population states.

Bingo.

No herd immunity means lots more people will be infected once we all go back to our normal lives again.

That said, it's no different than flu season. We have vaccinations and people still get sick and die.

Only difference is we don't compound that with also killing tens of millions of people's livelihoods and crashing the damn economy.

96 It's really quite astonishing that Trump now has a tangible example to demonstrate what Socialism does to an economy, and how quickly shit can go pear-shaped even in the best of times.

The DNCmedia has used our prosperity against us for a quarter century. Now shit has suddenly gotten real and the electorate has *context*.

You think Trump's not going to toilet paper lines as the ultimate "teachable moment" on the biggest stage in the world (election season) with the most Americans possible paying attention this fall? LOL

97 Not sure the Israeli guy had a great insight. The Kung Flu will grow at the same rate in various countries in the >group of people exposed to it

So, if we keep some people locked away, they are not exposed -- until they are exposed -- in the second, third, ... wave.

This was the argument to overwhelming the hospitals all at once by the first wave.

Still say there should have been no lockdown.

100 All government workers love the extra weeks of paid vacation ... that much closer to their early golden retirement. Some may be putting in extra hours, but no doubt are being paid double time for their efforts.

The only reason they should care if private sector loses jobs is they may not have as many servants to cater to them in retirement, fewer services available, a broke/broken country. But they don't think that far ahead. As long as they can just raise taxes to pay for their early retirements and second homes ... it's all golden for these "self sacrificing public servants" (spit)

101 This, first curve was indeed about reducing peak demand to keep it within existing/surge medical capacity. Which either worked, or was not needed (unknowable, at this point, possibly ever, as is the nature of such things).

Note the study Lomborg discusses does have what appears to be an optimal strategy, that is most likely to reduce total cases and deaths over the long term. Not sure it defines the "mitigation" strategies in detail to achieve this.

One obvious option, to epidemiologists, is to exploit "seasonal forcing" - the typical seasonal variation in case-load seen with the change of seasons, for many viruses.

Problem here is, of course - we have no way of knowing whether this bug will follow that classic pattern. If we assume it does, then best to go to minimal mitigation staring soon, through October (northern hemisphere).

106 Upside of the lockdown:

Where I live in CA, people are expected to wear masks in public. Not by law, but "recommended," especially when around other people.

About half the population wears masks, the other half don't.

Yesterday I took a walk in an isolated area -- brought a mask with me, but kept it dangling around my neck when there was no one around, and only pulled it up when other people hove into sight.

So after a while this figure in the distance appeared, so I pulled up the mask just to be polite. The person came closer and OMG IT WAS THIS HORRIBLE WOMAN WHO BASICALLY STALKS ME. We very sorta kinda knew each other in Junior High, and I didn't even like her back then (she has some kind of creepy personality disorder), but ever since, whenever we accidentally pass each other on the street, she runs over and hugs me and YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND and WE MUST HANG OUT TOGETHER MORE and all sorts of desperado loneliness tactics. Difficult to extricate oneself from her.

But this time, she walked right past me, waved, and kept going -- because she didn't recognize me, due to the mask!

Yay! I might like this whole mask thing after all! Keeps me anonymous from people I want to avoid.

***

Of course that number is almost certainly lower. We haven't reliably tested enough to know.

If we were really data driven we'd pick a county, try to give everyone there a reliable test, count the number of deaths in the locality and have a decent number....

But basically as of now its 2% of the people that have severe symptoms die, either from Wuhan flu or whatever else they are dealing with (as there is no consistency in how that is being reported). And we have strong evidence that at least something like 90% of people who get it have only minor symptoms

It's also worth noting that Wuhan appears to have had a second wave. Although no one can be sure, of course.

Further, it's being speculated their might be three different strains of this virus that are acting quite differently, depending on where they are.

They are calling the New York City strain Type 1 (or A, I can't remember), whereas the Wuhan strain is Type 2.

Why, I don't know.

182 The fact is, Sweden has higher corona death rates than their neighboring others. A LOT more. Now, there can be an argument that they will come out better in the long run, due to herd immunity, but that is yet unproven.

My model says that all models are full of shit, or conjecture, but mainly shit.
Posted by: GnuBreed at April 15, 2020 02:37 PM (Z4rgH)
++++++++++++++
Death rates, but not infection rates - which implies that something else might be going on.
Sweden vs. her neighbors:
Sweden: 116.6 positive tests per 100k; 11.76 deaths per 100k
Norway: 125.6 positive tests per 100k; 2.7 deaths per 100k
Denmark: 119.2 positive tests per 100k; 5.5 deaths per 100k
Finalnd: 58.7 positive tests per 100k; 1.3 deaths per 100k

Only Finland stands out on infection rate; only Sweden stands out on death rate (although her infection rates are similar to her non-Finnish neighbors).

Against the big boys:
Sweden: 116.6 positive tests per 100k; 11.76 deaths per 100k
Germany: 160.5 positive tests per 100k; 4.3 deaths per 100k
France: 158.5 positive tests per 100k; 25.6 deaths per 100k

Sweden is doing better than the major central/western axis.

I pulled this from 2019 population and current COVID testing and death information from Google (e.g., "Sweden COVID deaths" and "Sweden population" searches) and then did the arithmetic.

From a death standpoint, Sweden looks *terrible* and that would be worth knowing more about. From an infection standpoint, though, it doesn't look bad compared to her neighbors (except Finland).

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 15, 2020 02:51 PM (hYcqw)

183 Indeed, one Swedish academic has predicted that up to half the Swedish population will be infected by the end of April. Although it is probably too soon to see a clear effect of interventions on mortality rates, by April 1, COVID-19 deaths in Sweden accounted for 24 per million citizens , whereas in Norway it was only eight deaths per million. Finland was lower still with just three per million.

lots of info being thrown around re Sweden.

Under the blue skies and blazing sun Sweden has enjoyed lately, people have flocked to parks and beaches, bars and cafes. Nevertheless, Sweden has a high number of people living in single households , and citizens are generally respectful of public health advice and guidelines.
nationalinterest

eh?

Swedes are used to living alone, following rules and championing innovation. How much will these social norms help during the coronavirus crisis?

187 Look, I HATE this lockdown and I HATE my governor (Northam), but life is not going to be the same for me regardless.

I know two people who died from WuFlu. Not friends, but acquaintances. Both male, ages 68 and 72. Don't know if they had other health issues, but they survived many flu seasons. This virus killed them. It's not the Black Death, but it's not "nothing" either.

I'm 65, healthy and active. I exercise and get outdoors every day. But I'm not ashamed to admit this virus scares me. It's fucking spooky, with the 5-7 day incubation with no symptoms, and the weird range of effects from mild to lethal. I do NOT want to get this shit. Oh, I'm quite certain they believe it, buzz. But there's lots of theories by lots of people. The one the gatekeepers are choosing to run TODAY (including all morning on Fox) is the one which best flattens the curve on our hopes and dreams.

The idea seems just realistic enough to make people feel the absolute worst inside. If it was lock down until 2024, nobody would buy it. If it was lock down for the next six months, it would sound bad but it wouldn't rise above the noise of what's already happening.

*Lockdown Until 2022* sounds just awful and just plausible enough to sow seeds of doubt and destruction in the collective mind. It also makes other possible "solutions" the gatekeepers are already planning seems less bad. But mostly it's the doubt and destruction.

More than half of all Swedish homes are, like Wiking's, made up of one resident, the highest proportion in Europe, according to Eurostat figures. The most common age to move out from your parents' place is between 18 and 19, compared to an EU average of 26.

Some experts believe that these living patterns might help stem the spread of coronavirus; in current hotspots for infections including Italy and Spain, it is - by contrast - much more common for large families to congregate under one roof.

I retract my snarky comment from the last thread. However you do not know for sure if there was anything underlying that made your coworker susceptible to it. And there is even less incentive to investigate to determine if there was another underlying cause. I'm sure every year completely healthy people also die from the flu with no underlying hidden causes as well. It's what happens with diseases.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 15, 2020 02:50 PM (ptqGC)

Viruses are not alive in the sense that they have a pre-determined lifespan. They are either under destructive conditions or enhancing conditions that prevent or promote replication.

Population density is an enhancing condition, until the population achieves herd immunity, then it is a destructive condition.

Achieving herd immunity rapidly is the most ideal situation focusing only on virus eradication. If it can be achieved without unnecessary deaths due to lack of medical resources, so much the better.
We bought two months of time to build medical resources and treatments regimes. Any further lockdown and we are being a detriment to achieving our own herd immunity, while hospitals remain not overloaded.

It's time to get back to work with reasonable precautions against uncontrolled spread.

I don't pick up on the idea of subsequent waves.

It sounds to me like the correct answer is that "social distancing" does jack and shit to prevent the virus's movement through the population.

It could be that the increased precautions are slowing or stopping other diseases which, though tragic for the people they afflict, are statistically background noise in a normal year.

Heads need to roll for this hoax.

Posted by: fktheleft at April 15, 2020 02:58 PM (I54dk)

246 CBD is correct. I know math is banned and science and logic are haaaard, but one of the amazing things about a new virus is that - wait for it - we don't know a lot about it.

That's changing by the day, bigly.

As I noted just above, subsequent waves (almost inevitable) will not be encountering the same environment. We'll know a lot more about every aspect of this thing.

18-1's idea is actually something that is being pursued at various levels - enough testing (both current case and anti-body to show past infection) to generate enough data to make higher-confidence estimates. That's why the evil docs have been mentioning this aspect for weeks.

There's a non-scientific aspect that may be different in any subsequent waves, too. After the course of this first wave, with the strong mitigation measures and the success/luck/whatever in avoiding failure of medical capacity, AND the economic damage, there may well be a high bar for governments to push the button a second time.

248 Both of these things can't be true:

1. Lockdown has no effect.
2. Surge after lockdown.

My money is on 2. being true.

The only thing that matters is how many people have already been infected. That will tell us how many will get it when the lockdown lifts. They really need to get on figuring that out. There are some small efforts here and there, but this should really be a WW focus.

299 Our local health unit divides the confirmed Corona virus numbers into Long term care, staff (hospital long term home), and general public.

The long term care residents can not be isolated from the staff. Staff take protective measures, but they are on the front lines, and do become ill. They have children, who are in day-care, they have spouses. They will have to have some interaction with the larger society.

Social isolation can not be complete. It is a pretty crude tool.
So the best you can do is end up with a slower rate of infection. In the area of our health unit, 6 long term care homes have residences with the virus.

206 lab confirmed cases including 25 deaths to date as of 4:00 PM:
Community cases 26%
Long-term care/retirement residence cases 55%
Healthcare worker cases 19%
25 deaths (22 long-term care, 3 community)
It is possible that we can not 'bend the curve' or end up with significantly different outcomes.

Most of the articles quoting his "research" more or less conclude by saying they haven't done enough research to know how long the virus truly survives outside the human body.

News reports were relying a summary judgment of his initial findings; more suspicion than genuine research.

But if this goes on much longer, ordinary Americans are going to start an uproar over this penned-up existence we've been forced into.

Oh but I disagree. The 3 spins is a Fact. The results are a Fact, not an anecdote. And humans are very adept at finding 'patterns' in meaningless noise.

Because we want to make sense of things. It's our attempt to explain what we observe. Take the HCQ observations, for example. We now have lots of anecdotes that this drug combo helps. It is still not a fact, but many health care professionals are taking it as a prophlyactic, because it's a good damn bet.

It's still not a Fact.

I was an OS/2 guy by way of S/370 work before I moved on. Got into it because OS/2 nodes running Communications Manager could replace functions of a half-dozen different pieces of equipment on the raised floor from RJE/print stations and establishment controllers all the way up to 37xx front-end processors running PEP.

No, it's not to prevent the spread of the chinese virus. It's purely political. Purely.

By mandating masks, it gives the D governors and the Democrat party and Fake News to Demand the president provide umpteen mask first, an idiotic demand that can't be met immediately. So "masks" are just another Political Cudgel.

Not sure. There is speculation a wave ran through Californica sometime in November/December, and the one in NYC is more virulent.

So yeah. It might be nice if we knew who was traveling to which region, and from where.

By the way, somebody said the other day, these viruses, the ones we've seen in the past that come from China, they don't come from the central, Wuhan region. This is another one of those ways this one is unique.

Matt, unless a nursing home has negative pressure rooms available for all their patients( of course they don't), this infection will travel from patient to patient. There is a reason ICU wards that treat infectious respiratory agents are built the way they are and PPE protocols are done the way they are. There is no way a nursing home, staffed by almost all aids who have minimal training on infection control and limited PPE , are going to prevent transmission of very infectious diseases. Not to mention their populations are absolutely a dream pop for this virus.

They both are largely impervious to the puny efforts of man to contain them once they are in full swing. And neither of them goes on forever."

Respiratory issues are one of the most common killers of the elderly to begin with. Unless you locked the staff at these facilities in with the residents as part of the "lockdown" you are still going to expose the residents.

Which again points out the stupidity of what we've done.

So let me run through a what if here.

Imagine that we didn't close the schools, factories, and offices. Instead we locked down elderly housing in a *real* lock down *with* the staff say offering them double salary to make it worth their while. Open similar facilitates for other people with serious health conditions and lock them down as well. Keep them in this state until we have a vaccine.

For the cost of maybe a few billion I bet you'd save more lives that we have so far spending trillions.

Posted by: hawkpilot

Given the infectiousness of this thing, that's exactly right. Lockdown is a time-buying strategy, nothing more. Once the advantage of time is exhausted (people dying from being locked at home), there's no basis for population-wide isolation. It's not a herd immunity argument, it's an inevitability argument. The disease is incredibly infectious, and minimally fatal (far more so to several somewhat overlapping demographics)

No, it's not to prevent the spread of the chinese virus. It's purely political. Purely.

Matt, they do have gloves and masks. But until this, the protocol is the same stuff we have heard for years, wash your hands, wear gloves when handling bodily fluids( to protect the worker) and don't come to work with a cold.
Over 50% of Covid 19 infections have no symptoms. The carriers had no idea they were infectious.

Paul Rand was interviewed the other day and he said the only reason he got tested was because he ignored the recommendation to not be tested unless you were symptomatic and got tested because he had been traveling in and out of the country extensively. Since he's an MD, he was able to be tested and that's when he was told he was positive. He said he had zero symptoms, including a fever.
Prior to his diagnosis, he was also told he didn't need to quarantine after attending a fund raising event in Louisville that had someone test positive shortly therafter. Told that unless he was in direct contact with the infectious person , he didn't need to quarantine. Ok, but what about all the other people he was around, who may have been infectious without symptoms at that point?

The temperature taking is one way to block someone with Covid19, but it doesn't catch the 50% who are asymptomatic.

The death rate is interesting and a major outlier, but the infection rate is not. I did some quick and dirty arithmetic @182 - of all her neighbors, only Finland is meaningfully smaller in terms of infection rate, and Sweden is doing better than France or Germany.

Yes, this is all dependent on reported positive tests and deaths and who knows the real denominator, but based on positive tests per 100k, Sweden is not an outlier. It is an outlier on deaths, which I wouldn't mind understanding better (add me to a pretty big club on that).

544 >>> Meanwhile, a new paper shows that lockdowns do nothing to "flatten the curve" -- all they do is delay the exact same outbreak pattern until six months later.

I'm really not following the point of this post.

Is what is being said that the outbreak infects the exact same way. With the same number of people and the exact same time line? Or is what is being said that the number of infected remains a constant but the rate at which they become infected slows therefore you have the same number of cases but drawn out over a longer period?

If the latter is what is being said which is what it seems, then what you needs to be recognized recognize is if you take a one month pandemic and stretch it out over six months, while you are resource limited in treatment by say something that can only be used by only one patient at a time, like say ventilators, you reduce the total number of people who need ventilators at the same time by giving time for patients to recover and pass their ventilator on to the next patient.

Which is what I thought the stay at home order purpose was, slow the active patient increase so that ventilator production (ramping up by the end of this month) and treatment rollouts (hopefully wide scale coming soon) could could catch up and avoid shortages that would lead to a higher mortality rate.

I have to program in C now, rather than TAL, though I prefer TAL.

But same reasoning applies. I'm being a good dobee even though no one would KNOW what I was coding in.
I enjoy it when I have to jump into the TAL routines, and find it amusing that the 'C' functions that are called, are just C wrappers for TAL procs.
Some of this code is 30 years old, in fact, I'm shutting off the modem dialing code right now.

--------

This bought us time. Hopefully we use it well.

Maybe HCQ will be a viable treatment. Even if it is only effective half the time, that means half the dead and dying. Saving potentially hundreds of thousands!

Here is an example, Minnesota made plans to double our ICU capacity, and then add another half the original capacity in another 3 days, basically from about 1,000 beds to 2,500 beds. They found ventilators in surgical, endoscopy, and other medical centers.
(None of this was needed, because we didn't go NYFC in our infections.

Look at the USN Hospital Ships, Mask and Face shield makers. We are getting new sources of supplies.

Hopefully HCQ will work.

Posted by: Anachronda at April 15, 2020 03:53 PM (o2yR3)

565 Really this seems downright intellectually dishonest.

(1) It's ALWAYS been about buying time, so as to not overwhelm the medical system.
(2) When you get your curve later - instead of sooner - you can look for treatments and ramp up your production of medical supplies and resources. You can avoid being ITALY.
(3) Obviously SOME people will still get infected in a lockdown, and the more of that that goes on, the lower the curve is going to be later on, if only by a small amount. So the article makes no sense right off.
(4) Since the virus is spread human-to-human, the more the humans stay apart, the slower it will spread. It's pretty reasonable to assume that if the NYC area wasn't locked down right now we'd have the same situation as Italy - not enough beds and ventilators to treat the afflicted, resulting in MUCH more extreme fatalities. If the NYC area's curve has the same SHAPE, the AREA UNDER THE CURVE is MUCH, MUCH lower. It's pretty much akin to the concept of quarantine, which isn't "junk science".

Don't get me wrong - some of the shutdown rules are ridiculous and pure tyranny, and a lot of areas in shut down probably shouldn't be. We need to loosen up this shutdown and find a way to get back to work, bit by bit BEFORE the end of April - and we have to admit that if we lose a bunch of septuagenarians that it's an acceptable trade-off vs. destroying everybody else's lives.

LOL! That explains some of the behavior in my own family. We have just a smidgeon of Finnish genes - from WAY back (New Sweden, 1653), but you wouldn't believe all the Finns I have DNA matches to on MyHeritage.

My brother tells me the Finns are different from their neighbors, ethnically, too - have more in common with Hungarians and others. An interesting people, to be sure!

569 "I'm really not following the point of this post."
He's saying the data on infections to date refutes the premise behind "flattening the curve" (which is that social distancing will stretch out a wave of infections over a longer timeframe). That data from multiple regions using very different mitigation measures follow a remarkably similar infection pattern. The time it takes for an infection pattern to play out is unaffected by social distancing and lockdowns. Social distancing just delays infections to subsequent waves.

573 "The numbers told a shocking story: irrespective of whether the country quarantined like Israel, or went about business as usual like Sweden, coronavirus peaked and subsided in the exact same way."

Israel has reported 15 deaths per million persons, cumulatively, through today. The United States has reported 86 deaths per million persons, so far. Sweden has reported 119 deaths per million persons, and their daily figures are so uneven that it seems they must be suffering reporting delays. (Worldometers dot info is my source for these figures, on April 15, 2020.)

Maybe many of the states need to loosen their closures and bans. But the notion that such things simply make no difference seemed ridiculous, and the reported numbers support my opinion.

Ace, your judgment is usually much sharper than this. You need to slow down and think through what you read before becoming outraged.

574 "Meanwhile, a new paper shows that lockdowns do nothing to 'flatten the curve' -- all they do is delay the exact same outbreak pattern until six months later."

Ace, that's not what the Lomborg said. He said, "*Strongest* lockdown *not* best. A really successful lockdown means almost no one gets infected in 1st wave, so the 2nd wave becomes almost as bad as not doing anything." The argument is against the strongest lockdowns, which don't cultivate any "herd immunity," and which therefore merely delay the inevitable epidemic.

Ace, as I keep saying, you need to slow down and think.
