According to social proof theory, when an individual is unsure of the correct way to behave, they will often look to others to help choose an appropriate course of action.
For centuries companies have used the power of social proof to reach new audiences and sell more products. In 1765, British potter Josiah Wedgwood produced a tea set for Queen Charlotte. Wedgwood was canny enough to use royal endorsements as a brand building tool. His status as “potter to Her Majesty” allowed him to sell his products at double the average market price. Two hundred years later, television took celebrity endorsements to an entirely new level. During the 1950s, Hollywood stars acted as agents for brands. John Wayne represented Camel cigarettes. Elizabeth Taylor advertised Whitman’s chocolate. And Albert Hitchcock promoted Western Union. But for the main part, celebrities had no affinity or connection to the brand or product. A prototype smart toilet that can identify you by your “analprint” and monitor your trip to the loo has been created by researchers at Stanford University. It’s equipped with cameras and sensors that collect information on your bodily waste, and it uses that data to look for any health issues you might have.
The “analprint” is the toilet’s primary way of identifying each user. Much to the authors’ dismay, it’s also the aspect of the toilet that’s gotten the most attention since the paper describing the proto-toilet was published in a press release and the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering on Monday.
“It’s a minor part of our system,” Seung-min Park, a senior research scientist at Stanford University and the paper’s lead author, told The Verge.
The idea for an analprint was sparked by Salvador Dalí, who discovered that “the anus has 35 or 37 creases, which are as unique as fingerprints,” Park wrote in a blog post. The prototype device — which is modular and can be attached to most standard toilets — uses a Raspberry Pi paired with a camera to capture each person’s unique analprint as they sit down to use the toilet, ensuring the data it captures is associated with the correct person

Robert Watts became incensed after refuse collectors refused to empty his family’s burgundy recycling bin — and so used his car to block the lorry in Bernard Grove, Smithills, until he got their details so he could complain to the council.
Mr Watts says his wife Linzie was told that the bin could not be emptied because it contained a Pot Noodle tub, which is not allowed, but when she said she would remove it, they still refused as the bin would now be “contaminated”.

Iceland managed to do random testing of their population. While the found overall infection rates were a small fraction of the population so far, they found that 50% of those infected are completely asymptomatic, don't even know they have anything.

And they've got good data showing the mortality rate is 0.47%. This agrees with numbers from the cruise ship cases, BTW.

If you're worried about them playing games with cause of death, the overall mortality numbers will show the truth. While you can play around with which bins you put deaths in, you can play around with the total number. Unless you just make up dead people.

The trouble is this will take a while to get the data. It takes a while for all the data to get reported and collected.

For this Wuflu, we should see a spike above normal. That will tell the truth on how bad it really way. If someone is playing games, that spike won't be as bad.

And, if you note a drop in overall mortality after this thing over,that will tell you that it just killed some people off who were going to die anyway just a little bit earlier.

You will able to figure out the true excess deaths caused by WuFlu and how bad it really was.

It will just take months to a year to get the data to do that properly.

I'm already in that leaky boat.

I have to have surgery soon. The battery in my ICD is close to its expiration date. Originally, the surgery would have been sometime in May/early June. But thanks to basically closing down all 'unnecessary' surgeries, I have been postponed.

Messaged my electrician cardiologist about scheduling sometime in mid August to late September now just to get me in the booking rotation. He told me that the time frame is correct as my device's battery will start warning the battery life is nearing the end or, as the Doc wrote, 'the light goes on', meaning a warning light, but they are not scheduling any surgeries now and for the foreseeable future. He can only watch my readouts to make sure I still have battery life left. If I get shocked, that battery life gets chewed up much faster.

I might not die directly from the Wuhan Flu, but I might die peripherally from the Wuhan Flu. I hate this kabuki health theater shutdown crap.

Telemedicine strikes me as pretty worthless. I've e-mailed my doctor a couple of times with questions, but when I come in for my annual physical, I need to be physically examined.

A doctor has to be accredited at a hospital to perform procedures/surgeries there. Not all docs are accredited at every local hospital. Then you have the problem of modern health insurance not being accepted at every hospital, like the good ol' pre-404Care days. Some hospitals, e.g., will not take 'new Medicare' patients.

596 Well, I got some good construction work done today. Framed up the big hole in the side of the single-wide where it makes a doorway to the main entry room of the house. The opening was about 7 feet, and I narrowed it down to five. Cut some spare "trailer tin", and screwed it to the outside wall of the trailer, mainly to backstop the insulation.

Stuffed it with insulation, and cut and screwed on a piece of quarter-inch plywood backing board for the thin wall paneling. And then cut, fit, and glued up the last two pieces of wall paneling for that long wall. The wall looks vastly better than it used to do. Eventually, it will get a crown molding, a baseboard, and narrow battens over the joints between panels, but all in due course.

One, and just one, of the panels I glued up yesterday has popped free of the underlying wall. All that holds it are the finishing nails at the top and bottom edges. Must have let the contact cement dry too long before placing the panel. I guess I will pull it off and re-glue it in the course of hanging the 5 sheets for the opposite wall. I think I will have just enough contact cement to finish the job, but if I don't, I can get a quart. Won't need another entire gallon.

My glue brush has lasted me several days now by dint of me wrapping it tightly with aluminum foil, and then placing it in a plastic bag and sucking out as much air as I can. Keeps the solvent from evaporating, and the glue in the bristles remains fluid.

Sure. My standard technique for a multi-day paint job is at the end of the day, leave the brush with a bit of wet paint in it, place it in a freezer baggie with the handle sticking out, and use twist ties to 'seal' the baggie to the handle.

It'll be good to go the next time you use it. Saves on cleanup time too. I've gone as long as 2 weeks between uses of the brush. I even put it in a baggie if I'm taking a short break of an hour or so.

When cleaning the brush, use warm water and a squirt of Dawn or similar. Rinse the hell out of it; it's leftover resin from the latex that causes the brush to become stiff. When done, just take it outside and shake out any remaining water.

Folks, I've been reading about this NIH funding of coronvirus research, and this is getting pretty... well, down a rabbit.

SOme of this research is what is called "GOF", gain of function. What is done is to deliberately enhance a virus to make it more infectious in humans. Is this for bioweapons? No (but it would have benefit it to it). The main purpose is to learn more about how viruses infect cells and how it gains the ability to do so.

Well, after some safety "concerns", the HIH put that shit on hold, paused funding (except for some). The pause ended in Dec. of 2017.

This was done at the University of North Carolina. Scientists there. They deliberately took bat viruses and *engineered* a virus that could infect human cells.

It caused some controversy in the field.

Note that they have put a little updated caveat at the top of the page. Those who think WuFlu was engineered have been linking to that story. So they felt the urge to say "no evidence that WuFl was engineered.

So, there you go. Clear evidence that scientists have been enhancing coronaviruses to make them infect humans. Is it bioweapons research? No, but they are doing it (and maybe the bioweapons people are in the background, watching and taking notes).

Did you know the US govt had been funding this? Be nice if the media would tell us these things.

The left can talk about shelter in place but people are being ruined. Augusta GA probably brings in 70 percent of its income during The Masters. As CA, NY, WA, etc wallow in the "new normal", states like Texas and others can be focused on getting back to work. It reports on the sudden clampdown on all info regarding Wuhan outbreak - but there's only a clampdown if there's an existing flow, and there was. Which is kind of amazing. But China's a very different tyranny than the USSR. They've tied their wagon to partial economic integration - duh - not complete disassociation, like the USSR.

I assume part of this has been permitting fairly free scientific interchange - the only way to create, and build, real scientific power in your cadres and institutions. Situations like this put the two imperatives - interaction/openness/integration with the real world, and state control of information - into direct conflict.

If you read that "ethics paper" on this, the most controversial GOF at the time of that paper was something completed in 2012. Some scientists noted some H5N1 virus (avian flu tye) was airborne transmissible in ferrets. They wondered, hmmmm, can we make this virus be able to infect humans?

And they did. There was a debate on whether to publish this at all. And if so, how much to publish. Some panel of experts called the NSABB, National Science Advisory Board on Biosafety makes these calls. They initially decided to only publish in redacted form, to leave out the methods and details..

Chem/bio had more importance WRT terrorism.

The principles behind a nuclear explosive are fairly relatively simple and well-known physics. However, it is the details that are very, very difficult. One is not going to do such things in a home workshop. Not even close.

However, one with substantial means could. This includes govts, and maybe even Bill Gates, if he could get away with it undetected. Maybe a volcano lair.

The US govt. back in the '50s did some sneaky little academic projects and determined that anyone with sufficient knowledge and expertise could eventually make a working nuclear bomb. So they concluded the only way to control that was to keep the raw material, the fissile material, out of the hands of any such enemies.

For example, it is relatively easy to make some mass of fissile material go supercritical. Any naive attempt at a bomb would fail in a "fizzle".

The problem is this. Once you get a good chain nuclear reaction going, so much energy is released that the device tends to blow itself apart before that energy release gets going enough to do anything.

You make a little flash, which gives everyone around a lethal dose of radiation, spreads radioactive material all over the place, and other nasty problems, but you don't get a big, city destroying bang.

To do that requires some serious engineering expertise. Besides physics, you need chemical, metallurgical, etc, etc, electronic, etc, etc expertise. This is where the nuclear secrets lie.

Iraq under the Ba'ath was pursuing more paths to U enrichment than the US did in the Manhattan Project. Smart. They had the cash - and domestic technical brainpower - to do it, and to exploit the best method.

publius, about the "details" being the key. You'd enjoy The Los Alamos Primer, by Robert Serber - if you haven't already read it.

Thought of it because I was struck at how narrow and specific were the issues the Los Alamos teams were focused on, early on. All the major concepts were well understood. "Details" were almost the entire project.

Thanks, I'm going to watch those. One you might be interested in, and I don't know if I could find, was the US govt's project to determine how easy it would be to make a nuclear weapon.

They went to a group of nuclear physicists, those who had the knowledge, but no experience on actual weapons group, and hired them for a project. They told them, "Hey, we'd like you to try to make a nuclear bomb".

Yes, yes, we've done that and have our own weapons team and all, but we're just not sure they did it the best way. So we'd like someone to independently try to reinvent the wheel, and see if they might find a better way, something new, etc, etc.

And so off to work they went, with all the funding they needed.

Unbeknownst to them, the true purpose was to see just how hard, and how long it would take for those with the knowledge to make a working nuclear device.

They had the real weapons guys watching the new team like a hawk, spying on everything they were doing. It was like they were watching them through a two-way mirror.

It took them about 2 years, maybe less, and the Los Alamos boys concluded, yep, by Jove, I think they've got it. No tests or prototypes were made. It was just when the Los Alamos team, who had done it, determind that their blackboard designs would work, and after a little real testing, they would have a working nuclear bomb.

That's what led them to conclude the only way to control nuclear proliferation was to keep fissile material out of the hands of enemies.
