21 I get it. A guy in a gas mask walking through the grocery store is a bit weird. My biggest problem, though, is with the camera operator. The black woman loading her groceries on to the belt was a definite 1. There was no reason to pan away from her to show me some dude in a gas mask.

This is *everything* that is wrong with Hollywood today.

True story.

Do you know why doctors tell people to bring their infants in for immunizations, prior to their first year?

First year immunizations are essentially useless. They do nothing, because virtually ALL immunity prior to the first birthday is supplied by the mother.

The reason they tell you to bring your baby in to get shots is.... so YOU get used to bringing your baby in to the doctor.

You're being trained.

That's all.

Now back to your regularly scheduled freakout.

ANYTHING is better than nothing when it comes to covering your nose and mouth. So a bandana, a scarf, whathave you.

243 Are we going to find out in the future that we're handling this virus wrong?

Right now, coronavirus seems to be your typical, once every 10 or 20 year cull the herd sickness. It appears to focus on the elderly and those with existing respiratory issues. Sure, there are younger victims, but overall, when we finally get to see the numbers, it will be by far an older demographic that took the hit.

Does nature send these viruses around so that the bulk of the population can contract the disease and build up immunity to the next one? Are we going too far in trying to protect everyone, most of who would get the virus and recover like the flu, with the subsequent antibody improvement to protect against a newer, stronger strain?

The percentage of the population that will get seriously ill when exposed to the Wuhan Bug, without an effective vaccine.

We do not know today what that number is.

However, social distancing and prohibition of certain types of businesses and activities cannot change that number. It only changes the rate at which members of that polulation become seriously ill. (Flattens the curve.)

If, to protect that segment of our fellow citizens, we must continue wide-spread social distancing and so forth, until a vaccine is available, the country as we knew it a month ago will not return.

I believe that somehow we've got to get to a non-finger-pointing discussion of the above and make a community decision on how we go forward.

So the difference is a SCUBA is for higher pressure and SCBA lower and probably a shorty supply right? I guess I never realized they'd be different but why over-engineer the topside device to do what only the underwater variety needs to do. And the topside SCUBA could be a lot heavier because of the diver's buoyancy. I guess I always thought that firefighters and divers were using the same thing, which I now realize is silly.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!)

No. Most of the tests being used (especially the so-called PCR tests which are relatively fast and sometimes automated) are looking for specific RNA fragments that might be (believed to be, researched to be ) part of "a" corona virus; perhaps not "the" Corona Virus (SARS-Cov2, Covid 19).

The PCR tests amplify the "signal" of RNA found in your blood or swabbed mouth, etc. If the signal is low enough, then it is unlikely you have Covid 19.
Higher response means you might have it. Other simple diagnostics (body temp, coughing, other symptoms) are confirming.
Also likely; a lot of us are walking around with RNA from some corona type virus.

To really identify the specific presence of Covid 19 is a much more difficult test.

That's absurd.

Your caveman brain would still be attracted to the parts that are the reproduction factory, because that's what sexual drive is for. No matter how much socializing, civilization, and custom you pile on top of it, your innermost brain knows why it wants to have sex.

Authors are usually stupid people.

345 I am willing to bet that at least some of the improvised masks pictured above are being worn ironically, cocking a snook at the nannies.

I can but hope. Locally, haven't seen too many masks: mainly it's the very elderly and some service-industry types.

346 LOL
the masks are hilarious.

347 As far as being one of the horsemen from "Revelation," this plague appears to be riding one of those toy ponies that's just a stuffed animal head on the end of a broomstick.

Probably, but we don't know that at this juncture.

Okay. What are the options?

They completely caved in the US economy over the sniffles.
or
Its badder than you think but not as bad as they estimated, and still probably not worth the cost in dollars for shut down, but the "not shut down" cost in lives would have been too high to defend in election year.
or
they want the schools closed and everyone home because they are going to round up the bad guys and don't want them shooting up schools and activating MK ultra's on the public
or
the inbound comet set to make a visual appearance this week or next is actually an alien space craft, initiating a breaking burn, and they want people at home when the panic hits.
or
some other crazy ass thing

The point being, we are in crazy town. Nobody would have predicted this particular turn of events even 6 months ago. And the story we are being told is certainly plausible. A lot of disruption is China was obvious. The deaths in Italy are also apparent. But, I'm not gonna tell you that you shouldn't be skeptical. There's way too much sketchy crap ongoing. And there's no freakin' way that after a 3 year investigation/ impeachment failed, that this tailor made political economic disaster in an election year is just a coincidence.

PS Bill Gates wants to sell you a vaccine and provide you with digital identification to verify you are safe to go out in public...

We passed through a wormhole in space time when Trump got elected and probability as we knew it -- went out for a smoke break. She'll be back, when she feels appreciated again.

348 Full scuba is outstanding. I love how people are having so much fun with this.

Reminds me of the Soviet quip: "they pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work"

The same media that begged and begged for an economic downturn.

They are saboteurs.

If they can snooker the whole world why can't they get rid of Trump?

350 You can laugh all you want at hoarders, but we just found a face mask still in the box I bought for a project twenty years ago that's N95 compatible. Little wins!

351 60 I still cannot stop laughing at some of this.

I wonder if the scuba gal lives in the mountains. If so she may need to decompress before going up the next road.

***

Actually, she won't. Just breathing air from a regulator at sea level pressure won't lead to the bends/decompression, unlike doing the same 33 or 66 feet down.

(Not saying SCUBA gear at Walmart is a good way to prevent Corona virus.)

My guess is "Grandma's sofa with its plastic slipcovers."
