Japan's Deputy Minister Weighs In on China/WHO Controversy: "China is Asshoe"

He didn't actually say that, exactly, but that's the gist of it. See below the fold.

China has meanwhile opened its "wet markets," where living animals, many exotic, are sold in open stalls and kept close to each other, making possible the interspecies jump that sets exotic new plagues loose on humanity.

Cages full of cats and dogs waiting for slaughter and the unsanitary preparation of animals is again reportedly a common sight in Chinese food markets, often called wet-markets, according to in-country correspondents with the Daily Mail.

Lindsey Graham demands China shut down its "disgusting" wet markets, or else face trade restrictions.

Sen. Lindsey Graham threatened that the US-China trade relationship will "change" if Beijing fails to shut down wet markets that sell wild, and at times live, animals that could transmit viruses to humans once eaten.

Speaking during an interview on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said he would be writing a letter to the Chinese ambassador to tell him, "If you don’t shut those wet markets down, our trading relationship is going to change."

Wet markets are an outdoor series of stalls selling meat, fish, produce and other perishable goods that are popular throughout Asia and Africa. Living and dead animals being sold at these markets include pigs, oxen, ducks, chickens, bats, dogs, monkeys and cats.

"What can China do to help the world? Shut those markets down," Graham added when talking to the network.

80 SARS was Chinese. Inter-species jump from bats.
H1N1 (swine flu) is Chinese. Inter-species jump from pigs.
H5N1 and H79N (bird flus, the latter the big one from a few years ago) are both Chinese. H7N9 (which had its most-recent brutal outbreak in 2016-2017) came, probably, from ducks.
SARS 2 is Chinese. Inter-species jump from bats via another.

Chinese sanitation and food practices have a pretty bad recent history, eh? Thankfully, I am glad that our honest, upright, capable and forthright international organizations aren't infected with Chinese influence that cause them to ignore China's high-risk (for the globe and themselves) behavior.

[he] won the election against a well-qualified candidate despite widely covered accusations that he covered up three different cholera epidemics as health minister in Ethiopia.

You must not miss what happened next. On 18 October 2017, [he] announced that he had chosen Dictator President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, a notorious human rights violator to serve as a WHO Goodwill Ambassador.

China worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help Tedros defeat the UK candidate . . .Tedros's victory was also a victory for Beijing, whose leader Xi has made public his goal of flexing China's muscle in the world.

123 80 SARS was Chinese.

Same here. It's things like antelope, other horned animals usually. Ostrich is really good, too.

And here in the South, I've had fried alligator. It's meh. You can find the processed meat in some markets.

Festering above-ground sewers masquerading as hybrid live-animal meat markets combined with high density and extremely easy travel. There are probably outbreaks all the time, they just didn't move so fast.

Or there is indeed something else going on. But the story of the 21st century as been "a lot of bad new diseases come from China" (yes, see also non-Chinese outbreaks like Zika and MERS - it isn't a problem exclusive to China). Regardless, the immediate answer is the same: repatriate everything we can and ice them out. I'm relatively fine with that, actually. It's the widespread refusal to keep the vast range of animals separate that I have a problem with. I also understand that it's a country of a billion people that lives under communism and therefore food is scarce, so most of the populace turns to "exotic" meat because it's the only protein they can get. (Just ask the North Koreans how boiled grass tastes.) But if China wants to be considered a First World nation, they need to practice First World sanitation.

Yeah, wet markets are an ongoing risk to the world, and the Communist government is apparently afraid to shut them down due to risk of social unrest. And I wouldn't be surprised if one reason they covered it up for two months is that they figured, if China was going to get it, so would everybody else.

But it really looks like the "Horseshoe Bat originated virus with added ACE-2 binding" escaped from a lab. And the only reason for such genetic fiddling is to make a bioweapon. It was an accident, they released it early. It's like an accidental explosion in a nuclear weapons shop.

Cultural preference, not evolution.

E.g., nearly every white American home has a pet, and a lot of people think not liking babies is totally fine but not fawning over puppies makes you Hitler or Trump. That is not the case with other American groups, e.g., African Americans don't seem nearly as enamored of pets as your average white American.

When I was growing up, only a few families I knew had pets, and they tended to be wealthy. And pets generally didn't come into the house.

There are various places in the US called "Buffalo Leap," which in each case was given the name to mark the spot where Native Americans would herd vast wild herds of migrating buffalo off a cliff, killing thousands upon thousands of them. Then the natives would go around to the bottom of the cliff and generally just cut off some of the buffalos' tongues, and a few other choice body parts. 99.9% of the meat would go to waste, because it was vastly more meat than some small band of Indians could eat or carry or even make into pemmican.

The Indian tribes were pretty evil against each other. It wasn't the introduction of Whites that turned the Indian to evil or something.

Barbarian tribes are exactly that; barbarous.

They didn't need any helpful hints on how to skin people while still alive or some other really fascinatingly imaginative tortures that they performed on their enemies.

They did not have an EEOC around at the time ya know.

337 When I was growing up, only a few families I knew had pets, and they
tended to be wealthy. And pets generally didn't come into the house.
=====

Even pets had jobs and that is how they evolved into pets. Shepherds herded, hunters hunted, terriers killed rats, etc. Useful companions and workers. Even growing up in the US, 50-60-70s, most in the Midwest farm type country never allowed dogs or cats in the house. They were indulged as companions, but not in the house (except when subzero).

Thank goodness Old Dog and New Old Dog do a useful job herding toddlers to earn their kibble. Old Cat keeps everyone in line. When little kids aren't here, they are all comatose recovering from their job.

Yeah, and despite being fairly small in numbers and limited in reach, they still did some very long-term harm to some areas. There were 1819240 kabillion buffalo in the plains largely because they natives hunted competitive creatures to extinction. There are spots in the Appalachian mountains where trees STILL don't grow because of native actions damaging the region.

405 @DeptofDefense, scroll down the timeline, for SecNav/CNO press briefing. Bottom line: CO cc'd dozens of people on an email who had no role in the process/weren't in the chain of command, it ended up being printed in the SF Chronicle, and it didn't reflect the facts of the situation - SecNav chief of staff had spoken with the CO 8 hours before the email and only point of issue was speed of actions to help out the Roosevelt/prepare for emergency procedures at Guam. Various other oddities, like CO's assessment of medical situation, which sounded way off (and touched off panic in crew families).

Anyway, guess it's possible all the facts behind the command decision are incorrect, but don't see how. You have to watch the whole thing, the SecNav dribbles out the key factoids including some the zingers, he doesn't detail them in his statement.

I've never heard it explicitly, but I strongly suspect that resource rich areas that are easy to live in are less conducive to developing technology than slightly less hospitable ones. If the place you live is relatively easy to survive in, you don't need to bother with advanced science and engineering. You don't want your environment too hard, because then you pretty much always have a pressing environmental factor that is likely to kill you and everyone you love and you don't have the luxury of devoting time to thinking about advancing technology either.

It's that sweet spot in the middle where you get people that have a motivation, but still the ability to innovate.

Just to keep on the batteries line of discussion.

Most common battery type is lead-acid, second commons is lithium iron phosphate.

Do you understand the impossibility of operating factories to crank out billions of those puppies a year given current environmental laws in western countries.

We farmed that out to a country who's morals and respect for human life and health, are, shall we say, flexible.

If we want to move manufacturing back to the US, it's going to require massive changes to environmental and tort law.

Decoupling and home shoring is going to be a massive undertaking.

509 There've been some good books written on why Eurasia developed, and the New World did not. One of the big factors early on was the availability of domesticated animals. Dogs go back before the ice ages, of course but as early as 7,000 BC, people in the Near East were beginning to domesticate goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, chicken at some point, and cats to guard grain storage. What was available in the New World? Dogs and.... the Llama. It was a raw deal that meant that cultures in the New World never got the labor saving boost of domestic animals.

I've never even heard of the phrase until this plague descended upon us.

And then I had the misfortune of watching a few minutes of film from an actual wet market and was simply aghast at what I saw. Yeah, the petri dish of filth. But those precious animals, exotic young cats, raccoons absolutely stuffed into cages together, hacked up bat parts, armadillos squirming to get away before being sliced. Just sick. To do what they do to live animals. I'm still seeing that beautiful, young exotic cat (maybe a bobcat) in a cage with a sweet face knowing it's going to be butchered. I wish I hadn't seen it.

Granted, I never liked seeing those lobsters in the Red Lobster tanks, but this is magnitudes worse.

I love hot food. Love it. But, who wouldn't choke it down to get a good housewife, even if he hated it?

I have to cut out the spice because I found the only black American who hates spicy food. No hot sauce. No hot wings. Gotta buy the mild taco seasoning, instead of making my own, hot seasoning... It's horrible. It sucks, but that's life.

Welcome to most of the rest of the world.

You'll see live chickens, or goats, or sheep, sold all around Africa, South America, Asia...

Basically everywhere BUT the US and parts of Europe.

Its simple economics there. They don't have enough electricity for large scale refrigeration, so they have to keep animals alive until just before they are going to eat them.

I even saw this in the Arab quarter of Haifa when I was in Israel in the early 80's.

Except Tesla of course. Doesn't Lithium come from China?
Posted by: Colin at April 03, 2020 02:00 PM (qWhwU)

Hah. I have numerous old PC's, all of which could be made to work. And several vehicles, and about 60 pounds of old spark plugs, most of which can be cleaned, regapped, and reused, which used to be the way we did it.

They shut down the last lead smelter in the USA a few years ago due to excessive EPA regulations. But it would not be hard to start one up again. It's not rocket science. And a new-built smelter could be designed to be clean enough.

574 The Chinese Military Bio-Lab is only 30km away from the Wuhan Market. The Civilian Virus research lab is only 30 meters away. The Virus was human-altered. It shows signs of poor-man's-forced genetic engineering--injecting ferrets (because of blood similarities with humans) with various viruses and seeing what comes out. That lab had collected bat blood from another part of China where locals were experiencing higher viral transmissivity within the last year. Scientists from the lab go to the Wuhan Market often and there are rumors that janitors sneak out lab animals to sell at the market to get a little money.
