Modern journalism has largely become a profession of undeclared political pressure agents and people who want to brown nose the powerful, and those who want to position themselves at the periphery and then slide in when the timing is right.

232 Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday announced the creation of a special House committee charged with overseeing the unprecedented, multitrillion-dollar federal response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pelosi has tapped Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the Democratic whip, to lead the bipartisan panel, which will be authorized "to examine all aspects of the federal response to the coronavirus and ensure the taxpayer's dollars are being wisely and efficiently spent."

"The panel will root out waste, fraud and abuse; it will protect against price-gauging, profiteering and political favoritism," she told reporters on a press call.

234 As fears escalate about the toll the coronavirus will take on the sick and elderly in nursing homes — who are among the most vulnerable to the deadly virus — California regulators have told skilled nursing facility
operators that they must accept patients even if they have the disease.

The directive, in a letter to facilities on Monday from California Department of Public Health Deputy Director Heidi Steinecker, appears to side squarely with the hospitals. It says skilled nursing facilities “shall not refuse to admit or readmit a resident based on their status as a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case.”

Reached by phone by a Times reporter on Wednesday afternoon, Steinecker, who signed the letter, said “more nuanced” guidance would be sent to home operators “today.” She declined to say what the guidance would be.

277 Well for those who inexplicably subject themselves to much TV "newz", get ready to hear about NYC a whole lot. Barring a miracle, the next 12 days will likely see a lot of deaths from this thing in the NYC Metro, probably 50% of the eventual national total. This is what Trump was somberly alluding to yesterday at the briefing. Not just NYC, but that will be by far the location of most fatalities.

Because so many of the COVID 19 patients have positive cardiac tests, including enzyme leaks and abnormal EKGs, we are having to do a lot of triage. We don't want these patients in the cath lab because:
1. If their abnormal tests are due to illness other than a new blocked large heart artery, the trip to the cath lab benefits them not one whit. They get chest radiation and kidney exposure to contrast without any hope of benefit.

2. If I allow cath lab staff to be inadvertently exposed to a virus shedder, they will all be out on mandatory quarantine for 2 weeks. It doesn't take too many mistakes before you have destroyed an entire department's ability to respond to real MIs. And we are seeing quite a few big "real" MIs so we don't want people to have no emergency stent option.

And I don't think there will be enough stupid distortion of the oil economy in place very soon to vaporize the "tax cut" Trump correctly calls the oil price drop.

Speaking of, I watched a documentary on Prime the other day - "Munchausen Moms" - it's very interesting.

There was a woman who, as a child, was convinced by her Munchausen Mom that she had all sorts of maladies, etc. Spent her youth at the doctor/in the hospital. At one point, they did a heart cath on her!!!! Perfectly healthy 13 y/o girl. When the doctors told the mother NOTHING was wrong, she went off on them in the hospital, demanding OPEN HEART SURGERY!

It was stunning and sad to watch, but I recommend it.

It's actually on IMDBTV, so even if you don't have Prime, you can get that app and watch it, along with other really great things.

413 Hello. I'm not completely clear on commenting rules here as I don't comment very often, but I have read that people get banned for commenting on past posts. This comment is in regard to the post about the hydroxychloroquine usage by Dr. Steven Smith:

There is a sentence in that post that states:

"He said zero patients getting hydroxycloroquine had to be intubated."

That seems to conflict with the statement above:

"He says that of the patients he treated, only patients who had been on hydroxychloroquine for two days or less needed intubation."

Could this be clarified?

My comment is in the spirit of 1) Protecting the reputation of this blog in light of the hatred of the left, and 2) Attempting to relay accurate information regarding the Chinese virus.

479 Ace, here is my post on anecdotal evidence:
The most important part of the phrase Anecdotal Evidence is the

word "Evidence", the word "Anecdotal" is a modifier, which tells you

what kind of evidence it is. For example if I tell you that the sky is

blue, and grass is green, that is anecdotal evidence, if lots and lots

of people tell you the same thing from their personal experience, that

is still "Anecdotal evidence". At some point you have to ask yourself

"What is the probability that all of those people are wrong?"

There is actually a mathematical way of answering that question: Treat
each piece of anecdotal evidence as an independent uncorrelated signal,

assign an arbitrarily low probability of truth to each signal, say .1%

so that there is a .999 chance of each being false. Then raise .999 to

the nth power - where n is the number of uncorrelated signals, the

result is the probability of all of the signals being false.

If you have 1000 signals, for example there is only a .36 chance they are all false.

Each anecdotal example of a person being cured by the Trump cocktail is a piece of anecdotal evidence in favor of it working.

That's nice.

From the article:
The campaign has been placing these orders anonymously, but Fox News learned about the effort - and sources confirmed it.

One source told Fox News that the campaign was looking to not only express gratitude for first responders treating patients with COVID-19, but to support local restaurants.

I wonder who told them. This is a nice thing to do, but it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't as far as how the press will tell it. Start a clock on CNN running a piece to the effect of "Trump campaign uses back channels to inform friendly Fox News about COVID-related campaign activities. I don't think that counts for science. Maybe statistics. If you encouraged me to drink fish tank cleanser and report when I died that would be for science and/or parapsychology, but you can't do that because you're not married to me, and while "virtual murder " sounds like a good book title I suspect it doesn't really work as well as killing your spouse with fish tank cleanser,

The sudden loss of alcohol to a serious drunk can actually be life threatening. But Pennsylvania state employees are special snowflakes that can't even keep a warehouse open and ship booze via UPS.

I saw a serious drunk/homeless looking dude pick up some mouthwash at a dollar store recently. I wandered over and picked up a bottle to check the label - 20% alcohol - for one single dollar. Seems like a good value actually. Not for me, but I could see the appeal to a serious drunk. Fresh breath and a decent buzz while standing around a flaming 55 gallon drum.

516 From Pharmacy and Therapeutics, via the CDC...

"Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 9pct of the world's population is affected annually, with up to 1 billion infections, 3 to 5 million severe cases, and 300,000 to 500,000 deaths each year.1-3

In the U.S. alone, nearly 20pct of the population is affected. On average, 25 to 50 million documented influenza cases, 225,000 hospitalizations, and ultimately more than 20,000 deaths occur every year.1,2,4-7"

Chinese Bat Virus gots a lot of catching up to do.

But by all means lets destroy the global economy over something that may or may not be worse than the flu.

520 Has anyone looked at the stats for influenza this year? I'm wondering if deaths are down. I would expect the lockdown would also cause fewer folks to get the flu.

Posted by: notsothoreau

CDC "estimates" 39 million flu illnesses, 400,000 hospitalizations and 24,000 deaths from flu.

CDC actual numbers since 9/29/2019:

Total tests conducted for flu: 1,287,072
Total positive test results: 284,840
Percent of pos. test results: 22.13
Percent of pos. test/est. deaths: 8.43
Percentage of deaths/total est. illnesses: .062
