Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | As the Press Begins Laying Off "Journalists," Suddenly "Journalists" Discover That There Is an Actual Cost to Economic ShutdownIt didn't matter, and was a cost that could be cavalierly dismissed -- until our precious "journalists" started losing jobs. Gannett announced Monday it is cutting pay and furloughing journalists at its newspapers across the country as ad revenue plunges during the coronavirus pandemic. The publisher of more than 100 newspapers, including USA Today, the Detroit Free Press, The Columbus Dispatch and The Arizona Republic, is reportedly furloughing workers who make more than $38,000. Those employees will be subject to furloughs of one week per month in April, May and June, according to a tweet from investigative reporter Gregory Holman of the Springfield News-Leader in Missouri, a Gannett-owned paper. And oh no! Buzzfeed is cutting its "journalists'" pay, too! The horrors! How shall we go on? BuzzFeed is cutting pay for its employees as the company attempts to weather the coronavirus pandemic. In an internal memo on Wednesday, the company announced a graduated salary reduction for the majority of employees for the months of April and May, adding that company brass would meet with the news union to ratify the cuts.Check out this CNN whine of a headline: Hundreds of journalists are being laid off, right when the public needs them the mostWe "need" them? Last week, a senior "reporter" decided he would "investigate" and call the mother of a Twitter rando whose opinion he doesn't like. Do we "need" him? Is he "essential personnel" in a time of crisis? Anyone with eyes can see that reporters spend 90% of their time on Twitter, retweeting tweets, and vindictively, vengefully "investigating" Twitter users they disagree with. They also deliberately push fake news, and then claim it was an "editing mistake:"

the mother of a Twitter rando whose opinion he doesn't like. --- Remember a million years ago, when the Des Moines Register decided to wreck someone's life by digging up dirt on them? The editor published the article, then canned the reporter when the public's anger reached the boiling point. Oh, and a time-honored bike race or something was destroyed in the process. Why wasn't the editor sacked? It's like no one in the business actually cares to make sales/get views anymore. It's just bad luck or something. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. As I was rambling about last thread, current journalists don't know anything about anything. J-school teaches nothing about anything save "journalism". Thus the Gell-Mann amnesia thing. When you have something of import, like a fucking epidemic, you need reporters who actually know a little about the subject. Same thing with everything else that comes up. So rather than the press being made up of credentialed "journalists", you need them made of people from various fields that will be covered. That's a change the media ought to make. Fire all the snowflake J-school grads and hire people from various other fields willing to play reporters on their subjects. Well the melancholy truth is that the country *has* needed journalists - real ones, with real editors, producing real news - for a while. It's just that most of the ones currently working in the field don't meet this description.
For example, the last week or so, the task force briefings have featured usually at least a few good questions, which elicited important info (to those paying attention and thinking, anyway). Today's the part I've seen, has had quite a bit of this (and, a bit late, they brought out the charts and graphs and detail that's been missing). So yeah, we need a real media - we just don't have it, generally. Posted by: rhomboid at March 31, 2020 06:52 PM (El6T/) 90

Our local paper has taken down the paywall for important news on their site. They also have a couple reporters going out and doing video stories that are widely shared, like the 6-year-old who decorated all the windows on her corner-lot home with hearts to show her love to neighborhood friends.
The best journalism is local, because the reporters are accountable to their audience. The further up, the more crap writers there are. And most, honestly, never took an ethics class (yes, there is such a thing) because they have English degrees and no job. They've made a lot of progress now on Ebola. But with Ebola - we were talking about it before - you disintegrated. If you got Ebola, that was it.This one is different. Much different. This is a flu. This is like a flu. And this is a much different situation than Ebola. But - and we're working on Ebola right now, by the way. We're working on certain areas of the Congo. The Congo has Ebola and caused largely by the fact that they have war and people can't get there. We can now treat Ebola. In that - at that time, it was infectious and you couldn't treat it. Nobody knew anything about it. Nobody had ever heard of anything like this. So it's a much different situation." Part of the reason Ebola didn't spread very far was because it would kill all of its hosts so quickly the victims didn't have as much time to interact with others and infect them. So it would kill a village or two, then starve of carriers. Trump is plainly saying in this quote that Covid-19 is much more like the flu than like Ebola when it comes to the infected appearing healthy when they're infectious and its incubation time. If we REALLY needed those "journalists" they wouldn't be going the way of the dodo.
You know who's needed right now? Medical professionals. Truck drivers. Stock clerks in grocery and drug stores. Pharmacists and techs. Factories that produce the medical and cleaning supplies. Delivery services. Farmers. Gun and Ammo makers and sellers. Except for the medical professionals listed above, who may or not be on the right, those are all jobs done by The Deplorables. Last week, a senior "reporter" decided he would "investigate" and call the mother of a Twitter rando whose opinion he doesn't like.
I've read Marc Fisher's WaPo article in question. The Twitter rando (McMillan), indeed, was a rando. But ... he'd already faced a firestorm on Twitter for those opinions (which I don't share either btw). The WaPo reporter did his investigation and called said rando. Most of the resulting article is a balanced attempt to get McMillan's side out. Also McMillan's parents agree with McMillan (mostly) and were keen to get on the record. There are a lot of bad journalists but Marc Fisher is one of the better ones, in this case. Unfortunately, a "reporter" who still has a job with a Portland alt-weekly last year tried to incite a panic by claiming that right-wing "Proud Boys" were coming into Portland, and randomly assaulting homosexuals.
A very drunk lesbian fell down late one evening, injuring herself slightly, and was questioned by the police. She told the cops that she drunkenly fell. Hours later, she decided that it would sound better if she said that she was assaulted by a right-winger (and then established a GoFundMe to raise money for herself). This "reporter" breathlessly reported on this, and spent several weeks using the alt-weekly to amplify reports of further assaults on social media, none of which was first-hand ("a friend of mine heard from a friend of xers..."). Angry meetings were held, demonstrations took place, people began panicking and other Portland media started "reporting" on this wholly imaginary series of assaults. This was all Trump's fault, of course. Yeah, I really want that "reporter" to keep her job. Posted by: The ARC of History! at March 31, 2020 07:12 PM (I2/tG) 325

Another 5 cases are reported today in another nursing home, Baltimore city.

Dear Potato head Acosta: IF WHO had done their job; IF China hadn't lied about the virus and its transmission; IF Congress had focused on something other than fake impeachment and manufactured scandals for 2 years; IF Obama and Biden had not gutted supplies; IF our border was secure; IF Italy and the EU did not have completely open borders; IF the rest of the world was half as advanced as the US, then maybe things would have been different.

I don't understand what the flummoxed Vuomo, was saying about "stockpiled" (warehoused, withheld from medical facilities) ventilators. It's not like ventilators disappear if hospitals keep a surplus on hand. If he expects an "apex" of demand, handing out ventilators early just gets ahead of the curve. SOme one explain why he was so indignant about the big pile of unused equipment being unused when hospitals want a safety margin on premises?

Journalists think we "need" them? Maby if they performed their jobs and provided us with facts so that we could read our own conclusions. What they actually do is lie to us in order to manipulate us into furthering their personal political agendas and careers. So long as they are doing this, they a a danger to the public. I'd suggest they learn to write code, but they are not smart enough to write code. That requires someone capable of productive labor and helping others.
