Friday's ONT Has The Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu
Everything is about the Wuhan Flu, and I'm sick of the damn flu. I'm sick of the MSM sucking off the commies, and I'm sick of what seems more and more of a monumental overreaction to the actual threat. Since last Sunday, I've been keeping track of the number of deaths in the US. Not cases - anyone with half a brain realizes that as testing ramped up, the number of cases would too - deaths. Here are the numbers, taken roughly every 12 hours since last Sunday at noon: 402, 417, 473, 521, 592, 746, 849, 1042, 1046, 1296, and 1301 at noon today. As of this writing, the number is 1581 (all data from CSSE at JHU). It's obviously a serious situation, but serious enough to justify throwing our economy into a blender (and then increasing out national debt by 10% in one stroke because “the economy is in a blender!” ) in a nation that murders 2500 babies a day in service of a woman's constitutional right to fuck her brains out as much as she wants without any chance of consequences? I'm having a real hard time seeing how the numbers justify the response, Jack, a real hard time, and it's starting to piss me off. I doubt I'm the only one.
Oh, and one other thing that I asked the other day and haven't really seen an answer to: Where are all the homeless deaths? If Wuhan Flu is as deadly as they say, why isn't it ravaging a population that, generally speaking, is less healthy, lives in less sanitary conditions, and has higher rates of drug addiction and mental health issues? Enough about the flu. Like I said, I'm sick of it, but there's not a lot of stuff on other subjects out there right now, which means this ONT will be light on links and heavy on pics and memes.

Her Majesty and I agreed that would just be temporizing, that he was suffering now, his life would never be healthy and it would be better to let him go to spare him an ugly end. The logistics were difficult but Max passed away in Her Majesty's arms.
This has been a very hard year. We've lost Leo, Carmen and now Max in the last two months. Please believe me when I say our dogs are well taken care of and cherished, from the top-winning special to fat, neutered Mr. Peanut (who deserves the Good Boy Medal).
Rest well, big black Max. And wait for us.

To be fair, not sure this is unheard of. I can imagine areas where it would not be ridiculous, there are canyons and undeveloped patches in certain areas inside the city limits (to the south, mostly).

Yeah, it is very odd. I checked today and CA is reporting that they've tested over 88000, and have 4791 cases.
The homeless I've seen in Downtown aren't people you are going to be able to test, but you would expect them to be getting sick.
Newsom was supposed to be dumping a ton of $$$ to lease hotels and trailers to house the homeless.
When I heard that, my first thought was that they wanted them to die out of sight.

Special baby kitty Fanny kept me up last night. She started out fine, then puked up everything. She does that sometimes so I wasn't too worried. Then she was in the catbox about 20 times in a hour and seemed to be straining. She hacked up a hairball, then started puking up fluid every hour or so, until about 3. She runs across the bed and into the bathroom to puke, which makes cleanup easier. Still under the weather this morning, so I called tge vets.
That was interesting too. You call them from the parking lot when you arrive. They come out to your car. Most were wearing face masks. They have you sign the consent form, then take the animal in. Their front door was locked. Fanny checked out okay and is back home with antibiotics. Maybe I'll get to sleep tonight.

No the Treasury hasn't taken over the Fed. Trump hasn't nationalized the Fed. The Fed is national anyway, just likes to pretend to be a private enemy. No, a cabal of banksters doesn't make profit running it. You know who gets the profits the Fed makes from money creation? Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam pays zero interest on all the debt the Fed has monetized, since it is immediately returned to the Treasury as profit.
No, to the immediate issue. Treasury is helping the Fed create so-called Special Purpose Vehicles, or SPVs.
The Fed is shifting the printers to ludicrous speed. To buy, backstop and bailout ALL THE THINGs, the Fed needs to buy and lend to, uh, "entities of questionable solvency" one might say.
IOW, the Fed will need to take dogshit on its balance sheet. But the law doesn't allow the Fed to put dogshit on its balance sheet. Basically it has to have sovereign debt level credit ratings.
So, it needs to make dogshit look like fine Belgian chocolate.
How does it do this? Via SPVs. Treasury creates them or helps create them, and injects capital into them. Where does it get this capital? Borrows it. Which the Fed monetizes (or bond market buys) it. Now, the SPV has the credit rating of Uncle Same backing it.
SPV then buys dogshit using Fed's created money. On Fed's balance sheet, you have the Uncle Sam backed SPV, which looks like fine Belgian chocolate.
That's what's going on. They did this back in '08. First SPV which bough Bear Stearns dogshit was called Maiden Lane.
That's all that's going on.

Starting Monday, instead of a 1 hour/32 mile commute each way, the boy will be driving 3 minutes, 3/4 of a mile. So much more time for himself and his family.

Chatter among the storm chasers is centered on one particular computer model predicting an apocalyptic outbreak of long tracked, possibly violent twisters with the potential to ravage every major city between St. Louis and Chicago, but there are others cautioning that this particular model tends to overdo severe weather parameters and other models show a less dire outcome. (Now where have we seen that before?)
Meanwhile there is a bit of an online debate taking place about whether storm chasers will be in violation of the IL stay at home order, whether potentially exposed/infected people who live in mobile homes, etc. should go to community tornado shelters..... this could get interesting.

To begin, I want to say that I think the response to this WuFlu has been way too extreme - this should have been dealt with the way the H1N1 epidemic in 2010 was dealt with. Thinking we can shut down everything is insane. Also, I think the majority of the illness will be past, at least in this country, by May 1st. maybe a couple weeks earlier,even. Second, I strongly support every step Trump has taken, ESPECIALLY the $2 trillion bailout, and the Fed flooding the markets with liquidity. I think that buys us about 30 days, and maybe after that the system can be self sustaining. If not, we might have to double down, but we can wait and see.
I aggravated some here earlier in the week by harping on economics, but just to repeat, and to point out why this was so necessary: Economically, when combined with the secondary collapse being caused by the Oil War, this was not a "downturn" or a "recession" or even another Depression. What was beginning makes all of those fade into insignificance - we were looking (well we still are) at what was going to be 2 or 3 times as devastating, economically, as the Great Depression was at it's peak. 30% unemployment guaranteed, building to 50% and maybe more. The death of *every* independent business in this country.
Economically, we were/are standing on the brink of an Extinction Level Event. You may not believe it was that bad, but I can assure you that everyone at Morgan Stanley and everyone on Trump's team, including Trump himself, are absolutely convinced of that. We either throw however man trillions at it that we can Right Now, to try to stop this, or we accept that our markets, our pension funds, our society, and most likely even the Country itself, are lost forever. Even now, we are within days of that kind of meltdown happening - the only thing stopping it is the Governments willingness to print WHATEVER it takes to buy any asset, bail out any business, and prop up any valuation that it can.
will this lead to long term problems? Of course, terrible ones - but you don't worry about the problem you might have 5 years from now when you're about to die tomorrow. So, we HAVE to go big, no limits, throw everything we have at this and even more. If it only costs $2 trillion, that's cheap. If it ends up costing $10 trillion, we still have to do it, because we lose everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - if we don't.
As I said above, Trump knows this - he gets it perhaps better than anyone. I'm eternally glad he's leading us now, he may be the only one who could have done it.

Funny you should mention that, I was thinking weather models and virus models have a lot in common. Possibility of input error, model bias, human bias, etc.
Yesterday in Ohio they said peak would likely be end of April/early May with 6,000 cases daily. Now they're saying later in May with 10,000 cases daily. Why such a change in one day? Regardless, I'm sure they're going to use that to say we need to be locked inside for infinity.

You toss that off in a way that tells me you don't understand how resilient medieval societies were, on matters of basic survival, and how unsuited we are. We've forgotten what generations before us took for granted. Even through the 1920's and 30's, most houses (even in cities) had chicken coops out back for meat and eggs, you didn't go to a store from them. The farmer you got milk from lived a little walk from you, you made your own dairy products, the women sewed clothes for the family, you got herbs from your own garden plot. There was no big interconnected society; but that meant when big things happened elsewhere, the people could still survive.
We now live in this huge interconnected machine that no one understands completely, and if we let it break down, it breaks down everywhere and all at once. We've taken risks we don't even understand. In many ways, Medieval folk were a lot smarter about survival than we are.

Seems half the country is on board with everyone being stuck for two-weeks in the home together in order to avoid all other situations at all costs. But I wouldn't be surprised that the lion's share of infections happen in the home and in grade-school. I note that Japan only shut down schools while somehow miraculously avoided a widespread outbreak. This policy seems more based on intuition than science (past experience).

I went out today to get the mail from the P.O Box. Everyone that was 60 or older was carrying on like any other day, OTOH nearly every 30-something and younger was kitted up like they were going in to surgery.
Also, LEOs weren't patrolling and the highways were like Sunday mornings. I was able to easily and safely do 120+ mph for extended distances down highways that were usually creeping along at 20-30mph at that same time.
Quite a number of other people were 90+, while a considerable number of people on the surface roads were driving as if there was black ice.
Not sure what danger the Wuhan Panic has to do with overly cautious driving.

But, my opinion is that it is weapons grade tinfoil. No the era of central banking is not over. Donald Trump is not trying to destroy the central bank system of the world. Hell, his only complaint about the Fed was it was being to too tight. He's fine with it now.
There has been a Great Depression level shock to the US and world economy. Central banks are going YOLO to try to save it and prevent the Greater Depression.
Total world stimulus is about $12T, 5T fiscal and 7T from central banks. Uncle Sam and the Fed handled $2T and 4T of that. The ECB, BoE, and the others are handling the rest of it.

My two cardiologists' offices are in a hospital. I cancelled my appointments before they officially did. I received an email from the hospital that they are going 'virtual appointments' for now. Yeah, no. Not paying my co-pay to talk on the phone.
I'm going to have to have surgery within the next few months to replace my ICD; that surgery is not elective, unless I'm electing not to stay alive. I hope this lockdown/shutdown crap is over by then and the infection rate has dramatically dropped. If not, it would be a real Hobson's Choice: Not replace my ICD and die or have surgery and potentially get a killing virus as my degenerative heart disease has my immune system compromised.
I hate the interesting times we live in.

Now, this "digital wallet" business. Another example of how the tinfoil hat crowd will take something and twist it into some sort of conspiracy.
There is a provision in there to use the Fed as a vehicle to get "cash to Americans" faster, using the Fed system rather than going through the usual Treasury check route.
THe US govt doesnt have an efficient way to get cash to the citizens directly. Imagine that.
The idea is for the Fed to be able to much more efficiently get the "digi-dollars" it creates into the checking accounts of the public.
That's all it is. Now, the reality of that seems a bit reckless. Helicopter money fast. But you don't need the tinfoil.
Criticize (or support) things based on reality, and not tinfoil hat level nonsense.

Yes. The battery life is just over 5 years and they don't like to wait until the last minute to change it out because if I get shocked, that chews up battery life. My first ICD was replaced after just over 4 years because of the 9 recorded shocks with that device. Only one shock with the current device. I think of that as an improvement/win-win. The ablation I had in 2018 probably helped with the reduced number of shocks.

I think the drill was: spray shoes with shellac or varnish, dip in powdered graphite, let shellac dry, burnish graphite with brushes or rags to lay the flakes down and achieve electrical continuity; then electroplate.

I doubt that's what the hoarders are doing; I imagine it's people wanting to have things on hand to make a cheap meal in anticipation of being laid off soon. Keeps them from having to immediately eat what they buy or already have for long term storage.

have you tried potato sourdough starter? Otherwise I will share some out my freezer with you.
I use minimal amounts of dried yeast, about a pinch, because I let my starter work for about a day before mixing it to dough

The oil war is a huge shock - all by itself it might have caused a recession, but coming at the same time as the virus scare, it guaranteed that this would be a catastrophic event.
Trump and his team also recognize this as a problem - now that the immediate problem has been dealt with, at least for a time, he is beginning to talk about options to stabilize the oil business here. Steep tariffs on all imported oil are one possibility, there are other things being discussed. Trump realizes that it is NOT in America's interest to let every shale oil producer in texas & the rest of the country go bankrupt, which will happen if he doesn't act to stop it.

late, as i was eating dinner and chatting with Herself.
you can't make hand sanitizer out of 70% Isopropyl, or even commercially available ethanol, unless you have access to ethanol over 160 proof. you also need hydrogen peroxide and glycerin. Isopropyl needs to be at least 80%, which, IIRC, they don't make, so you need 90%, and then there is pharmacy math involved as well.

My supermarket is full of the stuff. tiny little steaks that are about 4oz and cost $30. A steak meal for me would be closer to $100 since I would need a few to be satisfied.
Then they have the aussie stuff, which is cheaper, but still about double what it costs in US. and it is always tough and stringy.
The other problem is that they cut it too thin.

No, what bothers me is THIS stimulus, larded up with pork. We're going to find down the road that very little of it went to the people who needed it and most of it went to enrich the powerful and connected. Number two, the panic seems contrived. I know this is the conspiracy theorist part of my brain that I try very hard to suppress (we all have one), but seasonal flu events like this happen almost every year. Knowing that, how hard would it be for the powers that be/globalist/deep state/pick your term forces to plan to engineer a panic to crash the economy to shut down the populist revolt that has been going on for the past few years In an election year? Some solar company in Spain did exactly that. The feed-in tariff for "green" power was so ridiculous that they could actually make a profit, running generators on diesel fuel to run the floodlights that made the solar panels kick out a few kW into the grid. Pure graft.

Which often produced KwH at night, sold to the power company for High Price. Because they were running diesel generators at night, and feeding it through the heavily subsidized "renewable" system.

I would be OK with unemployment checks for those who lose their jobs, and loans to companies (large and small) with the gov. assuming the risk, but this is much more. It is pork, it is 100% unemployment checks, it is loan forgiveness, ....
What happened to the idea that sometimes people have to feel pain? Their is virtue in going through hard times but our gov. claims it can make all the pain go away. In reality, it will crush the dollar, and hurt anyone without a house or stocks at the disadvantage to the young and savers. They are not eliminating pain, they are hiding it.
And these pork programs will last forever. Did the budget ever go down after the last $1T "temporary" bump?

As a practical matter, I don't know if you could do that. You would have to phase-match the gensets to the grid, or bad things would happen. Presumably, the grid-tie inverters for the solar panels are inherently phase-matching. Maybe you could pull DC off the gensets, and tie it to the panel side of the inverters?

It is not that it is overblown (it is), it is that by this point we should have an understanding of it. THe only population sampling data I have seen is the Diamond Princess from beginning of Jan. All other data is not a full survey so it doesn't tell you anything.

My personal observances: While the lack of traffic on the roads and empty parking lots show that a lot of people are staying home, the public areas...parks, the central areas of the small suburban towns, and the restaurants that are still operating...tell me that quite a few other folks are using this as a staycation. I picked up from a popular pizza joint in Jersey, and the call-ahead pickup line was pretty long. Some people wore masks, most didn't. People did seem to be trying to keep distancing space around others. Joggers and bicyclists filled the streets and parks. The police, at least the ones that weren't parked outside of the supermarkets all day, were more interested in setting up speed traps than bothering the crowds.
Meanwhile, "they" are talking about keeping the stay-at-home orders in effect until May, June or even July. I think that is a pipe dream at this point, unless there is a huge spike in deaths from COVID. Every day the voices of the scolds get shriller, but more and more people say screw it, and go out.
It certainly is interesting times.

But that's just what you cannot do. The grid is running at 60 Hz. Diesel gensets run at 60 Hz. More or less. If a generator is to be tied to the grid, it has to match frequency and phase to the grid perfectly at all times, or the grid will backfeed the genset, and the magic smoke will escape.

Those states also have load matching since when the sun is out, the AC is on, This is not perfect since spring is a lot cooler with strong sun, but much better matching than the north.
That means that the entire state of AZ, NM, W TX, and S CA should be 100% solar before it makes sense to put any solar in, for example on telephone poles all over NJ or farm fields in Germany.

Not sure what you are talking about (I think solar scams) but people run M-G sets all the time to do this stuff. That is a motor and generator shaft coupled. They do it to match phase and even to match frequency in places where 50 and 60 meet. THey are cheap (ish) and efficient

To tie inverter output into the grid, you've got to have the proper control equipment. Inverters are "fired" by various control systems to output some semblence of a 60Hz sinusoid.
That system has to be synced with the grid and thus designed to do so.
With a regular old synchronous machine, once you get it synchronized (see the old light bulb methods for eyeballing it), it gets locked in.
Imagine such a generator tied into the grid. Open the throttle of your prime mover. You don't increase the speed, you just handle more of the load (a tiny, tiny fraction of the grid -- think of it as like infinite inertia). Now, rare back on the throttlle, trying to slow down. The grid now motorizes your generator.
If you had a power meter hooked up, you'd see power go from positive to negative.
Now, there are limits to that, such as maximum torque angle. After that, you would speed up your generator, and it would go to "swinging" and hunting.

Manual synchronization is cool. There are light bulb set, with two forms, synchronize on bright and synchronize on dark. Both have their pluses and minuses.
You match speed until you get as close to 60Hz as you can. Now, watch your lights. When the lights are their brightest, you could throw the generator in parallel.
There will be a little jump and whump. It is now locked into the grid. 60Hz speed is locked in.
Now, that initial jump and whump will be desructive if you don't do it at the right spot, but once you're locked in, you're locked in.

I am saying run the diesel generator into an M-G set. So the generator drives a motor, and that motor drive a generator.
Without the M-G set, I think the speed of the engine would be on the bottom of a stable curve controlled by power and lag angle. If the angle got too big (the engine moving faster than the generator wants to) the load would increase slowing the engine,.. etc.
The only way these would work is if it was self-stable. But what do I know. I have taken classes in this crap (last class at my uni. which did) but never worked in the field.

Yes. I am "sheltering in place" here in AZ. The WuFlu Panic is at least as bad in Canada as it is here. AZ is not quite as bad as other States. No curfew or mandatory stay at home...yet. I went to home Depot and Lowes yesterday.
I am fixing up the old house here. Since my oil patch job has essentially evaporated, I may as well stay here as long as I legally can, and work on the house. Add value to an asset I own, so that in the event I have to sell out, I can get more for it.

My big, big fear is that Governors will be intransigent and refuse to allow businesses to open while new cases continue to be reported. They pulled the trigger without any plan for an exit. Hopefully the White House can give compelling enough data to give state Governments the cover to allow people to go outside again.
