Dow Surges +2112, Biggest Point Gain in All History

Kurt, gregg hardest hit.

The Dow had its best day since 1933, clawing back some of its recent, brutal losses on signs that Congress was nearing a deal for a US stimulus package worth as much as $2 trillion to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2,112.98 points, or 11.4 percent, to 20,704.91 as lawmakers closed in on a deal for the rescue package, which would shell out cash payments to American citizens and authorize massive bailouts for troubled industrial sectors, from airlines to mom-and-pop restaurants.

It was the biggest percentage gain for the Dow in more than 85 years, and its biggest point gain ever.

I'm still down 25% on my two index funds.. but only about $3000 in them.

we didn't have this much money coming in before ... from the Fed reserve or the DC couch cushions, (or Trump's stash). Seems maybe they flushed out a lot of shorts, that had to cover, giving us an extra 5% ... just a guess.

It is not really a 'V-shaped recovery', it is a huge shot of cocaine from Papa Government. But maybe it will hold for awhile. Buying up bad debt ... not sure that resolves all problems, but maybe it holds past the election. I can't see a return to old highs, but hanging in there past November is good enough for me.

More good bad news: Facebook has announced declining ad revenue. Twitter "withdrew Q1 guidance" on declining ad revenue, and now Facebook is doing the same.

You may think, how the hell is that happening, with so many more people online during the lockdowns. Well, one of the first things companies do in hard times is cut advertising, and, and this is the kicker, the content people are looking at during this WuFlu panic is not the biggest ad revenue generators by a long shot.

No need for any relief package to actually have any seriously bad elements - a very narrowly targeted package consisting almost entirely of loans and loan guarantees would hit most of the needed buttons. And that would not create significant additional debt.

Yes. It's mainly the service sector that has taken it in the shorts, followed by manufacturing. How to measure it, not a clue.

Who holds US debt? A whole bunch of people. The biggest entity is the Federal Reserve, meaning the printing press. But that's is far from the majority. China holds about $1T, behind Japan. Domestic holders are the majority last I looked.

As I've been droning about here the past couple of days, the Fed is going YOLO now. They are gonna BUY ALL THE THINGS. A provision is the stimulus bill to given them authority to buy stocks and corporate bonds.

Meaning, the Fed can pump the stock market directly (via printing money).

The Fed is getting ready to throw the printing presses to ludicrous speed. They will monetize all the new debt necessary to keep T yields low.

That's what happened during Obama's term in office. The Fed bought mountains of paper, which was how the stock market rose even though the economy never stopped contracting over the next 8 years.

When Trump came it, the growth was legit and some of the big drops were the Fed unwinding their purchases.

Just as I figured, they've already opened up unlimited swap lines with the biggest foreign central banks again. It's complex, but because of the dollar's special status as "international reserve currency", in financial crunches and crashes, there can be runs on the dollar in foreign country.

Swap lines given the foreign central banks unlimited supplies of dollars to throw at the those runs.

373 A 40th birthday bash that a Connecticut woman held earlier this month is now being eyed by health experts as a suspected coronavirus “super-spreading event” after more than half of its 50 guests later tested positive for the sickness, a report says.

The March 5 gathering at a home in the small town of Westport – which the New York Times is dubbing “Party Zero” – occurred when Connecticut had no confirmed cases of COVID-19. As of Tuesday, the state is now dealing with 415 cases, 270 of which are in Fairfield County, where Westport is located, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University.

...math in empty head...
1 million lost work years every day of the lockdown...
...and if the average little worker works 100 years per life...

That 10,000 lost working lives every fricken day of a national lockdown. (this is an order of magnitude thing...)

10,000 lost every day because somebody might die.

Better be more than 10,000 a day dying from this bug to make this lockdown effort cost effective, and by 'cost' I mean the wasted lives.

503 >> So if I follow, does that mean not only is the Fed monetizing US debt, but also the whole friggin world's debt?

Close enough. Basically, here's the deal. In Europe, Britain, Japan, and all the foreign financial centers, when the shit hits the fan, since international transactions are settled in dollars, when there's various crash and runs, you have people scrambling for dollars.

To get them, they have to sell shit (and the effect is to drive the value of the dollar up against foreign currencies).

To stave that off, foreign central banks need dollars to lend. But they can't because they don't create dollars, the Fed and only the Fed does.

The swap lines allow the foreign central banks to have an unlimited supply of new dollars to draw on.

The net result is the foreign central banks get to decide what risks the dollar will be put up against and not the Fed.

All 250,000 show up in the same two weeks, not spaced out over four to six months. All while you are dealing with your monthly share of that same flu season too.

Only 6-10% of the COVID-19 tests were positive. 90% were people sick with some other nasty shit like flu, strep throat, or pertussis.

There are only about 900,000 hospital beds total, and in Winter they are almost always full already. Where do you put an extra 25,000 patients? 100,000 patients?

That is why we are destroying our economy, so we don't have to find out the answers to that question.

Dear Members of the Harvard Community,

Earlier today, Adele and I learned that we tested positive for COVID-19. We started experiencing symptoms on Sunday-first coughs then fevers, chills, and muscle aches-and contacted our doctors on Monday. We were tested yesterday and just received the results a few minutes ago. We wanted to share this news with all of you as soon as possible.

For a while I've been of the opinion that by 2024 voters will be looking for something more sedate and less dramatic than the eight years of Trump's presidency. Not that they've been bad years, but at some point you do want a break. Pence's performance over the past few weeks will serve him well in selling that to voters.

Just looked up M0, monetary base. (Fed data for this is known as H.3)

M0 stands at $3.54T, of which $1.8T is physical.

Now, it gets complicated, but not all of the latter is FRNs, it includes the coin out there.

Coin and FRNs are two very different things. Coin is direct Treasury currency, it is not created and destroyed by the Fed.

695 If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
