I don't have a problem with that at all.
There are plenty of premium global tactical and security consulting firms that provide very high quality intelligence on threats to companies and to their high value employees.
If I were a client of one of these intelligence gathering firms and did not get detailed and advanced knowledge of things that would have a dramatic effect on the company and its officers, I would be looking for another firm.
What do you think retired intelligence officials do? Many do privately what they have been doing for years for the bureaucracy. The difference is, they live or die on the quality of their information - very much unlike the Deep State and typical government drones.
I would imagine that the intelligence gathered by private consulting firms is of higher quality and more reliable than the political biases and gamesmanship going on within the federal bureaucracy.

I went out walking today at my fave park to do so, Rynerson Park. Usually I can drive right in-- there's a road to a parking lot inside the park-- but today the gate was shut, and an LA County "Safer at Home" note attached.
What's funny is, there's also a parking lot right off the road where the park is located. I drove by and there were a lot of cars parked. This park is located between two flood control channels, and all you need to do if you park by the street is get out, cross one of three pedestrian bridges and voila, park entry. Lots of others were there besides me, also walking and exercising. Only diff was, the restrooms were closed.
Anyway, was fun to defy authority a bit.

Now, it turns out that there was a person was hospitalized in Oregon with CCP virus on February 6th - a fact that the State of Oregon chose not to disclose.
Since in early February the Left was still insisting that discrimination and xenophobia was a bigger problem than CCP virus, my bet is that the person hospitalized was Chinese, and the State of Oregon found that fact to be too inconvenient to disclose.

Last thread I see someone asked about those two daughters of my mother's friend in Seattle.
My mother hasn't talked to her again, and doesn't know all the details. Apparently they had took off on this little excursion back in January. (They had travelled to Spain earlier last year, but had come home).
Now, they should have immediately come home once the pandemic news came out, but being 20-somethings, I don't think they minded.
And I'm not sure, but I think they didn't pay any attention to the "All you broads, come home now" order from the State Dept. (That's a Trudeau joke).

I disagree. This has hit hard. People were already tired of hearing about Trump phone calls and Trump firings and Trump complaints and Trump this and Trump that and how it's Really Obama's Economy.
Their lives have been turned upside down. Democrats rely solely on stupid faggy petty marketing bullshit to persuade people (a misspelled word, a quote taken out of context, etc), and now thanks to this, the electorate is just about completely unpersuadable by small bullshit. It's going to be corona for the next 6 months. The Democrats will hold endless hearings about the "botched Trump response" through the summer and we will have to hear about it from their fake experts and people with an axe to grind... just like shampeachment. And they are going to look supremely stupid again, just like shampeachment.

A few days ago I told my wife and son that we need to prepare for things to go sideways.
I have 2 big dogs in my house, and their behavior has changed in the last few days. Biggest dog is now either laying across the front door, or at the feet of my wife. Smaller dog (50libs) has now taken to sleeping on the stair landing leading to the bedrooms. IOW, the tactical chokepoint.
I'm not sure this means a damn thing, but I just realized this has been going on for a few days now.

Here's what happened, synopsis, and this should be a lesson to any parents thinking about letting their young idiotic spawn go any world jaunts.
The two girls were staying at hotel in India. India goes into lockdown a few days ago. Due to foreign scourge virus. Hotel owner throw the two daughters out immediately. Yankee, get out.
No other hotel will take them in. No shop will sell them anything. They are sub-untouchable, being dirty foreigners probably infected with Evil virus.
They found someone who will take them and buy food for them. For now. If the mob comes with pitchforks and torches to burn out the Evil Foreign Scourge, I'm sure they will be tossed out. To the mob.
Now, their mother is not stupid and I can only assume she's in contact with State and trying to get the closest consulate on the case, but I don't know.
I don't think the two idiots even paid any attention to the "All abroad, come home now!" order.

My former brother-in-law worked for DuPont and helped develop qiana. I was a teenager and he gave me about a three inch block of qiana. I could hit that sucker with a sledgehammer and nothing happened; no chips or cracks to that block of qiana. The sledgehammer just bounced off. It was weirdly entertaining. Qiana is a very strong polymer that met its match with fire.

Little did we know they would poke into the news. Because of that search, a couple of weeks ago she got an alert of a news article about "Revenge of the Pangolin."
The original item in her magazine was about how pangolins were endangered because of eating as exotic food. Maybe Corona-chan will save them in the end.

When I said the Fed was going YOLO, I had no idea. There are even more new tools they're proposing giving the Fed in this stimulus bill. Whether it makes into the final bill, who knows.
Now, this is unprecedented in the history of central banking. The US govt is not too efficient at getting money into the hands of the public quickly, so they are proposing to let the Fed do it with digital accounts.
So, in other words, the Fed would become not just a central bank, but a regular bank facing the public.
The idea is for the Fed to create digidollars and put it right into the bank accounts of individuals and companies.
I'm not joking.

hmm, that is like the Seinfeld episode when his parents who retired in Florida never used the A/C. The dishwasher thing is interesting. I for sure think there are things such as big pans that probably do not need to go in. But it really comes down to how you were raised. If your family always used the dishwasher, it is likely you will as well
Someone used my coffee maker while visiting while I was in school. I checked it a year later and it had pretty nice mold going on from the old coffee grinds.
I also got gifted a lot of plants in college. Funny that after a year I only had a cactus. That thing was indestructible.

I've found a 3-4 pound roast (with a nice fat cap) cooked in the crock pot, with potatoes on the bottom and carrots on top, makes a number of leftover meals, including open faced roast beef sandwiches with the saved au jus.
Another crock pot multi meal meat I cook is that corned beef in a bag, adding more spices as there are never enough in that teeny tiny spice packet. Not only corned beef and cabbage for one or two meals but also Ruben sandwiches along with corned beef hash with eggs for breakfast. Wrap up the cooked corned beef in portions for the freezer for those later meals/sandwiches. And a crock pot is so not labor intensive.
The one thing that helps is to use a Word file to keep a list of what's in the freezer, along with labeling what's in the freezer. Instead of hunting through the freezer to see what I want, I just scan that Word document, updating items as they are taken out of the freezer. For example, hamburgers 4/4 MM/DD/YYYY, then 3/4, etc. The Word file helps with quickly scanning the date foods went into the freezer, as well, allowing me to use that always correct FIFO inventory system.

It is good stuff for sure. I wold first go with some nice pans like cast iron, a good chef's knife, and some pans you can put in the oven. Of course add in some pots for soups, cooking pasta, etc. At that point you probably still have change from two c notes and you can cook 90 percent of what is out there.
The crock pot is for real but most gadgets are a waste. If you like them they are fine but still.

Yes and no. I only have a refrigerator/freezer but I stuff that freezer. Also, for some things like soups, I saved those good plastic soup containers from Chinese take-outs (plus from a now gone deli which had the good containers as well; the store delis use cheaper ones and I don't use those). For a soup, I simply line the container with a big piece of plastic, ladle in the soup until almost full, then carefully fold over the plastic, labeling the lid with food-date-1 to 7 and so on; that little layer of plastic prevents freezer burn. For the labels, I use the ones for file folders, writing on those what the food is, then I have a semi-clear larger 'clear address label' I put over that and which stops the other label from falling off in the freezer. I have over 20 of those containers in my freezer right now (they stack so well) and the Word file helps with knowing what I have and which numbered container to take out when wanted. It sounds like a lot of work but it's really not.
I learned the hard way about the necessity for the Word file and that plastic lining. Before I got organized with the Word file and the labeling, pulling out a container was always a mystery/surprise, sometimes with freezer burn.

they always go for milk, tp, and,and bread. BTW, I freeze bread now and that is really the only way to go imo. The healthy stuff goes bad just like that. If you freeze it, you can pop it in the toaster and them you are golden.
I also freeze bacon. You have to separate it and put it in the freezer on parchment paper. Then you can put it in a bag or whatever and cook it when you want. I learned that a long time ago at a golf shop/food counter. We always got our bacon frozen individually.

I razzed the manager at TJ's when I was in there last Friday, about their wine selection (they had plenty, but it was somewhat picked over). He laughed and said it was his only real crisis. We'll see - I figure as long as the world is closed I am going to try to make the most of things by finally dealing with home projects, etc., and minimize my exposure. I'll probably make one supply run and get booze/food from same place.

I never used my crock pot (ex left it behind) until I recently found out about the crock pot liners. I hated cleaning the thing but with that liner, cleanup's a snap. Plus I can lift out the bag and strain the liquid to make gravies.

By the time even a Switzerland knows it has some new bug of int'l concern, given incubation times and the way these things work, travel will have spread it pretty widely already. This is why I love the ONTs. Lots of time to share/discuss things like that. I'm not really around for the food thread often, and even that moves too fast to another thread.
As you say, that plastic lining is a trick that works and I like learning what other people's cooking tricks are. I have a few other tricks that are easy peasy. I peel ginger with a spoon so three's no waste and I can't cut myself.
As we discussed earlier having a spice grinder is great because whole spice seeds bought in large containers is cheaper than the small powdered containers and is fresher/doesn't go stale.
I also love, absolutely love, my stick/immersion blender. I've used that to make a pureed ginger-carrot soup, an asparagus soup and a dried split pea soup. I also use it puree roasted pepper, adding sliced Kalamata olives and capers to make a sauce for fish; it also freezes well and I use the half-pound containers for that instead of the pound ones as a I only need smaller portion per serving. But I make a big batch of that when I do make it, roasting 4 or more red peppers instead of just 1, getting a pound of the olives and slicing them, using any leftover olives in some other food. Capers are a staple and I keep a large jar in the fridge for other sauces and egg salad.

I was over there at the time the Travel ban was announced. With a group of 40 people on a local ski club trip, so far at least one person has tested positive for COVID-19. My guess is that the many, many hotel workers and vacationers from Italy, Germany and France broadly seeded the country. The week we arrived less than 100 cases, iirc, and when we left it had topped over 1,000.

they say an old school, hand cranked spice grinder is the way to go. Some also use an electric coffee grinder. one key is to toast your spices for a few minutes on low heat in a cast iron skillet. Not necessary but it brings out the oils.
I have not purchased ground pepper in probably thirty years. I hope no one does that. I do love freshly ground black pepper.

So while I could, I got two pounds ground beef (chili), 2.5 pounds of chicken (jambalaya), and 3 pounds of pork (for pulled pork). I have everything else I need for those recipes save produce, and no one is going after produce - just the shelf-stable items that I already had and have in decent amounts. I'm debating about what to cook in the next two-three days. If the panic-buys continue, I can hold out another two-three weeks.

was obvious they were going to stay afloat. My only guess on why it has
risen so much is some of the price was discounted for the idea that
they might go under. That never made any sense but so much today does
not.
The moves in that stock have been
truly amazing when you think about it. thirty to fifty percent is one
thing in a micro-cap but not in a big industrial. I think it was well
over forty percent though and that is amazing.
The
funny thing about stocks is it is easier to see an opportunity than it
is to act on it. And for sure the reason we don't act is we really don't
know. Anyone can come in after that fact and claim they just knew x, y,
and z would happen. I am not doing that as I did not. And what happens
tomorrow is anyone's guess.
That is a crazy stock right now. It used to move in fractions of a percent.

For spices, I toast if they are going in something. If they are being cooked on something, I don't toast. I understand a hand grinder for coffee beans, but it's not really necessary for spices.
I have a shitty little cheap 3-inch lightweight aluminum pan also left by the ex I use to toast spices. You can't cook anything in it as it will burn but it's perfect for toasting spices.
Agree on the pepper. Fresh cracked only for me, too.

RickZ, what brand/make of blender? Don't have one of those, have often thought of adding it to the arsenal.
A Braun. Came with a mini-food processor bowl, too. That's perfect for grinding nuts or ham/chicken to make sandwich salads. The stick blender bottom detaches for cleaning, with the top motorized part also fitting into the top of the processor bowl lid. Pretty convenient little tool and well worth the money. Don't know how much it costs as it was a gift.
One tool I do know the cost of and which is really good to have is a Microplane Zester. They cost somewhere between 15 to 20 dollars and is another 'worth the price' tool. I use lemon/orange/lime zest in various foods/sauces so I don't waste one bit of a citrus fruit. I love using a fresh squeezed orange and zest in my Chinese stir-frys, be it chicken or pork or beef. The lime juice and zest goes into my pork burrito filling. The lemon juice and zest gets used in lots of my pan sauces/gravies and my string beans.

Then I rocked a large knife through it to grate. Worked like a charm.
I also use the zester for grating small amounts of hard cheeses for meals/bowls of pasta, like Parmigiano Reggiano and other Italian hard cheeses. The zester is an easy clean-up.

That was smart. I remember a commenter on CNBC a few days after 9/11 as if it were yesterday. I mentioned this a few day ago here. I think it was Joe Kernen but I am not positive on that. But it was the way he said it that always stuck with me.
It was while the market was collapsing and everything to do with aircraft was going down. He said, "I guess we are not going to fly in planes anymore". That is a paraphrase as it was almost twenty years ago. But it was the way he said it that stuck with me. And damn if that wasn't when the market started to turn.
I saw one recently in the middle of the last year. i realize a lot of these guys on tv are stock touts and they contradict themselves all the time. But there was a guy on CNBC that had so much conviction about TGT that it was obvious the was for real. I thought about buying but didn't. He was right and that stock when on a tear a few days later. The problem is knowing when the right time is.
Boeing has not been without its faults. They almost went into the tank in 2000 because of poor leadership and out of control unions. But as I said a few days ago, at least historically, American politicians from the left and right supported them, they had their back. There really is no other option than Boeing in commercial aviation. And if you want to improve the trade imbalance, you get foreign nations to buy Boeing planes.
So they have had a pretty amazing run over the last few days. I have not followed the stock closely in the last many years so I have no real opinion on it other than the obvious. It really is the only game in town. And until AOC and her type nationalize everything, politicos are not going to let that company collapse.

good point. That is how I do garlic though I might have said otherwise. Garlic can be done with just a decent chef's knife. Smash it, peel it, and then chop it up and crush it with some Kosher salt. I don't look down on those that use a garlic press, but I haven't used one in decades.

One of my favorite inflation suppressing tricks is the "hedonistic factor". They wave their hands and say, well the price has gone up, but the product is better and you're getting more value, so that cancels it out. The price increase is real, not inflation.

They have to raise them quickly, because they're using receipts from the current load to pay for the next one. And yeah, the drop is slower. If I were running a gas station it would be a slow as I could get away with.

I know that immigrants pour into Spain and risk their lives just like Cubans coming to Florida. It is good that we recognize this as it is reality. I am not blaming immigrants for a flu as I have not followed it. Also, that is not a good reason to blame immigrants. If something it F'ed up, it is the job of the authorities to fix it.
But it is worth noting that impoverished peoples are pouring into countries other than the USA. They pour into Spain, Italy, and Germany as well. Wherever a group is doing well, those who have less will try to go there.
I saw a pbs special a few years ago with Spanish immigration officers that ran a sub in the Med. And Spain is harder to defend than the USA with our big beautiful wall. They have Islands all over the place and people who land there are pretty much guaranteed an in.
Now it an American tries to get a work and stay visa in Spain or France, well, good luck unless you have connections.

I went out for groceries and gas yesterday and found everything we needed except eggs and milk. Made some stir fried pork and vegetables in the wok last night and I warned the missus, "If you really like this, tell me right now so I can jot down the recipe because I was winging it." It was pretty good and I think I'll try it again sometime.
We are working to bring our Scout troop together online using Zoom videoconferencing. Tonight we're holding a patrol leaders' council to have the youth leaders meet and decide how we'll proceed. It should be interesting. We experimented with WhatsApp, which apparently is directed toward smart devices, but its video connections are limited to four persons only.

Also FWIW, apparently doctors in the tri-state area are writing prescriptions to their families willy-nilly, this from a friend whose job at United Health subsidiary shows him real time prescription writing volumes by drugs at hospitals and medical practices all over the country.

it is in The Swamp now, i noticed that. Forever they could never get in in The Swamp. Bluebell used to run an add that only the White House could get their ice cream back in the late 80s under Bush SR. Someone made them cut it out. But they are expanding like crazy.

No clue (and I haven't been in a Holiday Inn in many moons). I just repeat what smarter more accomplished people tell me. I also hear that Telehealth (remote medical visits by Facetime or other video application) are through the roof, and that a cheap home antibody test is shortly to be released, from which doctors hope to identify many people who already recovered from WuFlu and weren't aware they had it.
Also, United Health has just got FDA approval for a home covid test, meaning you won't need to leave home to get tested.
That's my list of rumors/gossip for the morning!

They have always been very careful about expansion. It was not long ago that is was only a Texas thing. But they have been expanding a lot lately and they are going into new markets as we speak. I visited their town, it is quite small.
The Good Mythical Morning ice cream taste test if pretty funny really. They had no clue that BB invented Cookies and Cream as well as Cookie Dough. Thank God they didn't include BB cookie dough in the contest as it would have been a wipe out and seemed rigged.

If you didn't see it above, the are investigating a high end ski resort in Austria. Back in January, they apparently had an outbreak of something they covered up, fearful of hurting business.
Infecting jet setters returned to their home countries. It was most certainly coronavirus. They've traced hundreds of early infections back to this resort.
