Meanwhile, Governor "Mammy" Blackface has ordered Virginia schools to end. Shut down for the rest of the year. The year's over. I guess everyone will just repeat this grade. That order also limited all public gatherings to 10 persons or fewer and shut down all "non-essential" businesses. You know, all businesses are kind of essential to someone, right? That's how they make money -- someone out there needs them. And one IOC member says the Olympics will be delayed, which I'm going to guess really means "cancelled until next year." And the Democrats continue playing their partisan games:

Trump's in a bit of a political pickle. If he ends the shutdown and we have a big surge of COVID-19 cases, he's screwed. If, on the other hand, he doesn't end the shutdown and this thing peters out, Democrats will say he overreacted to a nothingburger.

There is nothing wrong with Fauci giving his advice to Trump as to what he thinks should be done. And there is nothing wrong with Trump ignoring it. Or taking it under advisement with competing advice on other matters that are not under Fauci's purview. It is not all or nothing. But then most of us can comprehend that there are competing things and you have to take it all under advisement. Sadly, our press is not really capable of doing this in their little "minds." The WaPo is a vile, malodorous, fetid pool of goo.
But Trump is alarmed by stock market & impact of high unemployment for 2020 election -- & weighing easing restrictions Is it the election? Maybe. I imagine that it certainly factors into it. But I also reckon that collapsing GDP, surging unemployment, faltering production, overworked distribution networks, economic dislocation the likes of which we've never seen in peacetime and the potential of a permanent reset of our economy to a level last seen generations ago are probably more of a factor. Jeb Bush tells The Dispatch that the coronavirus pandemic will lead to "a movement toward valuing competency, consensus, and servant leadership."
When I think of our shitty elites, "competence" doesn't enter my thoughts. Folks like Max "Always Wrong" Boot saw to that. When I think of the Left that wants to destroy our liberties and subordinate the man to the state, "consensus" doesn't cross my mind. You cannot negotiate with a man holding a gun pointed at your chest. When I think of Nancy Pelosi, Richard Burr, Paul Ryan and Jeff Flake, the words "servant" and "leadership" don't surface, far less together. The man that tried to be President seeks to show his moral purity and deep thoughts during this time by prescribing ... more of the same. Fuck him. Sideways. The grim fucking calculus is becoming apparent. Either we open the economy back up and a significant proportion of the old and/or medically frail die, or we lose untold thousands of productive workers and entrepreneurs to suicide and/or addiction. That's not even factoring in the civil unrest that is sure to hit when untold millions in the lower income working class runs out of cash (which is likely happening this week). Any way you factor it, bodies are going to be hitting the floor. So then, whose bodies? How does the government pick and choose? What is the socially optimal way to deal with such a desperate scenario? Posted by: imp at March 23, 2020 04:30 PM (SFOr6) 106
I understand we want to stop the spread of the virus since it can lead to serious illness that can eventually overwhelm hospitals.
HOWEVER, can we take a deep breath and look at history? This is not the worst thing humanity/the country had faced. Why is it that this particular situation warrants basically destroying the economy? There have to be ways to allow the economy to keep going while still taking precautions to stop the spread. The government cannot provide financially long-term for the majority of the country. People need to and want to provide for themselves. That is what has made us prosperous. Posted by: chique d'Epstein didn't off hisself at March 23, 2020 04:30 PM (9hauA) 107

There are many common sense and probably epidemiologically sound kinds of measures to take to partially/greatly restore economic activity. It's not black/white.
Some of them are already in practice - grocery stores open (but "social distancing"), restaurants open for carry-out, etc. These kinds of things can be applied widely, and allow much commerce to resume. I'm thinking we'll see this anyway, as a first step towards an all-clear. Big public events or gatherings, still banned. Elderly facilities and hospitals off-limits to all but needed people. Stepped up services to help elderly/vulnerable continue to self-quarantine. Think this will be the first step back towards normal. Depending on numbers, might start later this week. And there could be great regional variation, too, based on local infection trends. Posted by: rhomboid at March 23, 2020 04:32 PM (El6T/) 131

BREAKING: Dr. Fauci is warning Trump officials NOT to listen to growing
push among WH advisers, GOP lawmakers to restart the economy I'll say it one more time, and then I'm done for the evening. Because I'm borderline doing the same shit the panic mongers are doing. So this is it for the day. We have civilian oversight of the military precisely because generals, left to their own devices, would do nothing other than fight wars. Rare is the general that will ever recommend "let it go, not worth it". Generals are almost always going to look at a fight and tell you how they can win it. Fauci is a prime example of why doctors shouldn't be unsupervised either. Left alone with power, Fauci will rid the world of disease - and make it miserable to live in as a result. Experts know their individual trees to the finest detail. But trust me - they don't see the forest the slightest bit better than any of the rest of us. Act accordingly. Enjoy your evening. And there is nothing wrong with Trump ignoring it. Or taking it under advisement with competing advice on other matters that are not under Fauci's purview. It is not all or nothing. Okay, finally read the content.
This WaPo piece looks like more the same bs from the MSM we've seen for 3 years. Probably there are discussions at the WH about how to proceed after 3/30. And, surprisingly only to a journalist, there are disagreements, and/or different plans of action being proposed and considered. Someone who was present at such a meeting, or got to see the notes for it, and is either an Obama/Bush WH admin leftover who's leaking this. Or some earnest advisor who wants their proposal to come out on top, leaked it. WaPo then runs it through the magic Orangemanbad-ificator that spits out an article making it seem as if there's CHAOS in the White House, or Trump-won't-listen-to-experts, or whatever template they're using today. It's just speculation about what may or may not happen, masquerading as OMG Trump's going to kill us all!!!1! Posted by: Hands at March 23, 2020 04:34 PM (786Ro) 151

I believe the prudent thing to do is with widespread testing classify individual counties on a "Red-Yellow-Green light" scale.
Red Light: With actively expanding outbreak keep the non-essential business closed and ask people to stay home. Yellow light: With moderate but stable outbreak, allow businesses to operate but continue social distancing, at risk people stay home. Geen Light: With little or no cases in the county, no restrictions but encourage people to continue practicing social distancing. The only universal restriction would be large events that draw people together from around the country. Posted by: Serious Cat at March 23, 2020 04:40 PM (zqs/f) 219

Posted by: thathalfrican - sucker free on my phone Me too, with a caveat. To some extent, almost everyone who works is check to check, but fortunately, a lot of folks can work from home. I can work from just about anywhere with internet, so the checks will keep coming. If I wasn't able to do so---if I had to show up to get paid---I'd be livid right about now. Sure, the courts are closed, so no evictions. Utilities aren't going to be shutting people off in a pandemic. But the grocery store ain't about to start giving food away. People need to work. If they don't, we will have a host of other, equally deadly problems, except the victims won't be the old and medically compromised. They will be the healthy workers who kill themselves and the kids who suffer physically or emotionally from having their parents' frustration taken out on them. What the panicked among us forget, don't realize, or don't understand, is that EVERYTHING has a cost.
Saving "only one human life" has a cost. Shutting down major U.S. cities has a cost. People dying of COVID-19 has a cost. Everything has a cost. Shutting down the country has a cost, one we may not be able to afford. Letting COVID-19 run wild has a cost. It may be callous to say, but that is a cost we have paid before (everything from the Spanish flu to the Black Death). That might be hideously expensive in money and in lives, but we HAVE paid that price before in humanity's history. Clear, sound, sober, and realistic decisions need to be made. The likes of Pelosi and Schumer are utterly incapable of that kind of decision-making. Neither is Fauci, I am quite sure. We elected Trump for this. Not a figgin word about ramped-up production (West Virginia plant tooling up for massive output) big pharma donating millions of doses, etc.

SH, you can't be serious (about people actually doing the smart thing when their lives are at risk). Maybe in some small sub-sets of the American populace, maybe in Switzerland, or Singapore. Here? Not a chance.
---------------- Of course they can. If people were dying in the numbers predicted, most Americans would be pulling a gun on anyone who walked on their property. Dr. Fauci wants to flatten the curve to avoid needed to make decisions about who gets extensive treatment and who does not.
OK, but do Fauci and the other docs expect flattening the curve will also reduce the area under the curve? If not, meaning a significant majority of Americans will eventually inhale some of the bugs, I can see the case for re-opening now and hoping our care facilities can handle the load of the people who inhale it AND get sick. Death rate in the US has stayed been 1.2 - 1.3 percent over the past several days. By this weekend, the end of PDT's 15 days, we'll see what that number is. PDT and the docs may have to tell the public that there's about a 1-in-100 chance of death for most of the country no matter what we do before a vaccine is available. The question would be: Do we go on with life as it was and have 1 percent dead, or, have 1 percent dead and a cratered economy? SH, so you're saying if the behavior I predicted happened, resulting in a much worse epidemic, *then* people would behave differently. Of course. I'm saying there's not a chance that, absent heavy management from above, as we're seeing, that people would actually do the necessary.
In South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, sure. For lots of reasons. Not here. Not widely, across the board. Posted by: rhomboid If we started seeing 500 to 1000 people dying in every state across the country, yes people would behave differently. So, if we're going to shut down any industry, I'd be fine with a year hiatus from the MFM to test these economic theories of managing a wild virus..
Doc warned against it .. but he got it anyway. Completely healed a day later, after saying goodbye to loved ones, he was in such bad shape.
So even if it was a cure, death rate might continue to climb if doctors are warning against it, even if a patient brings it up. What are they, all Democrats trying to run up a body count, or just playing it safe with "normal drugs"? But there are no normal drugs for this, nothing but guesses. I agree. Problem is, we don't have enough data yet to really know the death rate of people who inhale some of the coronavirus. Critical decisions made in the next week or two will have to be made on estimates using available data. I can accept that; how much of our safety-at-all-costs population will? I hope almost all.
Posted by: Gref at March 23, 2020 05:10 PM (AMIL/) From everything I've read, only about 20% of the passengers on that Diamond Princess cruise ship got infected with the virus despite near-optimal breeding conditions, meaning that infection must be a lot less likely than we've been led to believe. So even that 1% death rate, if it is accurate at all, has to be taken out of the 20% of the population who actually gets the virus. So we're talking maybe 0.2% of the population, max. Which isn't nothing, but does it justify running a previously-strong economy into a brick wall? Posted by: Dr. T at March 23, 2020 05:18 PM (Vgw1E) 584

This is an easy solution -
Have Trump give a national speech that if the Democrats don't give him a clean funding bill to help save and fund the country and unemployed in this time of need and would rather play politics with people's lives - then he'll have no choice but to lift the restrictions and let the people get back to work. TMJ and Ace's liver with valuable common sense reminders.
And experts aren't the problem - they're support, sometimes vital support, but don't make the decisions. As JackStraw said earlier today, he hired Trump to make these kinds of decisions. In fact there was congressional testimony during this brouhaha that the original, key decision on stopping admissions from China (travel ban) was taken by Trump *against* the expert advice. DHS acting deputy Cuccinelli brought the expert reco to Trump, which was that travel ban not yet needed. Cuccinelli said he disagreed, thought it prudent to start ban. Trump agreed. Voila. Key correct decision made. This account should be fleshed out and then put out officially by the WH, as background info. Trump rightly touts this decision every press briefing, time to add details to it. Can be done without appearing to diss the experts, who are valuable assets - just not the decision-makers. So, no, not 1%. Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V In many ways, the Diamond Princess example was a good sliver cross section of the "worst case". Confined on ship, a skewed population in terms of age, and waiting for the disease to run its course. Add to that the mortality from Covid 19 among those younger than 15 years old is just about Zero, then the risk is actually pretty low for the whole population. Trump obviously/correctly looking for a "bipartisan" approach to this, which (kind of incredibly) remains his default. Things have changed. 455 here's a question I've not seen an answer for,
how many negative tests are there? every website shows deaths, and total number of cases. but not total number of test conducted. what % of those tested are positive, what percentage of ALL tested are dying? what percent of positive are ending up in the hospital? ______________________ The AZ Dept. of Health is posting its testing numbers for the state health lab. The current numbers are: -- # of people tested: 352 -- # of negatives: 309 -- # of positive: 43 -- # pending: 6 So only around 12% test positive. AZ reports only 2 deaths from the Chinese Bat Soup Virus so far. They don't provide any information about how many are hospitalized, critical, or just at home nursing mild symptoms. AZ has a population of around 7.5 million people. Currently, 234 people here have the virus (the testing numbers above are for those the state tested; other people were tested in private labs, so that's why the total number is bigger). 234 is 0.00312 of the state's population. The two dead represent 0.00002666 of the state's population. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at March 23, 2020 05:35 PM (k4dH2) Posted by: Droopy at March 23, 2020 05:36 PM (XZPbq) 656

The fact is there are probably a lot of folks who have it or had and had no idea.
While it's true that they might infect others, the relatively low confirmed sick also means that the estimated transmissibility is like less than we know; and it the mortality rate is definitely lower than any estimates we seen so far. Posted by: Droopy at March 23, 2020 05:40 PM (XZPbq) 660

"Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity. This level is many times higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for most adults of 600 IU of vitamin D a day."

Yeah, fuck him. Posted by: Emperor Country Boy at March 23, 2020 06:15 PM (W2foY) It was always slippery language. When a public health professional says the chance of catching such and such an illness is low, he means the chance is low right now. He could be aware everyone will eventually catch whatever it is and still tell you the risk is low. Posted by: Ace's liver at March 23, 2020 06:33 PM (wGeit) 673

What are they going to do keep us in isolation for months, that won't stop the virus it might fudge the figures for a while but the fact is all viruses must peak at some point. I'm not willing to live under house arrest for months because some power hungry media loving doctor thinks I should. You can't stop a virus you can only control the spread for so long.
