The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

And now, a primer on trolls:

Serious question - what purpose does a troll here fulfill?

What good do they think it does for their side?

Posted by: Tonypete at March 11, 2020 11:56 AM (Y4EXg)

Good question.

First, let's list why they're not here:

--They're not here to talk to you.
--They're not here to argue a point with facts and reasons.
--They're not here to get involved in the general conversation.

No, they only have one purpose, and that is: to spread FUD. What's FUD? FUD an acronym for Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. The intent is to dispirit, dishearten, and demoralize, to fill their political enemies (us) with a sense of impending doom.

In many cases, what we're seeing is a troll sub-species called a "moby", which is a troll pretending to be on our side but who continually brings up fake news. It gets its name from the musician Moby who once bragged about sneaking on to conservatives blogs and lamenting over one of the Bush daughters getting an abortion (which of course was a lie)

Another name for this type is "concern troll."

But this leads to the next question: why? Why do they think this will work? We can all spot them instantly. We can all see their bogus statistics and their fake hand-wringing for what they are, namely, just another kind of fake news. Few, if any, AoSHQ morons are taken in by any of the various Kurts and Gregs and Nos that show up day after day peddling their crap.

I think they do it because they think it'll work. And how do they know it will work? For the same reason they accuse everyone else of being "haters." It's their go-to insult because progressives themselves are great haters, and, in fact, progressive ideology is basically a license to hate. They project out what they see in themselves.

Bottom line is, they think it'll work on us because they know it'll work on them.

Signs of mental instability are abundant among progressives. Look at their online profiles. Many admit to being on psychiatric medications (anxiety, OCD, and depression) or in counseling. Many do weird things, such as dye their hair florescent green and get various parts of their bodies pierced and tattooed. And consequently spend much energy convincing others (and themselves) that such things are normal, even praiseworthy.

It's a point worthy of debate whether progressivism makes people mentally ill or does it simply attract people who are already mentally ill?

Perhaps we're seeing a bit of both.

At any rate, I am convinced that the progressive mind is a fragile mind, and it needs constant support and affirmation in order to function at a level approaching normality. This is why they hate opposition, *any* opposition. They cannot bear to hear any discouraging words. And why their demands for "tolerance" suddenly become demands for "acceptance" and then "admiration."

So if you go to a progressive blog or discussion group and drop hints that Bernie is crashing or, even better, that because the impeachment attempt failed, Trump automatically gets an additional term, that will send a good number of them into a depression.

These are people who are confused about themselves and the world. Some of them don't even know what gender they are. When I look at someone with fluorescent green hair and various parts of their bodies inked, pierced, or otherwise mutilated, these are not indications of stability.

Although I've thought about doing a little trolling myself. That is, go to a left-wing blog and say stuff like, "You know, I heard Trump's approval numbers are way up today" and "voters may not like Trump, but they absolute despise Joe Biden", or simply "There's just no way Biden can win." But then I feel bad. It would be like beating up on a crippled kid, and I hate to be a bully.

Via senior GOP aide, Schumer/Pelosi now pushing these demands amid pandemic-fueled economic collapse:

1) Unprecedented collective bargaining powers for unions
2) Increased fuel emissions standards for airlines
3) Expansion of wind and solar tax credits

Source writes, "not only are these completely unrelated to the coronavirus epidemic, they could prevent companies from participating in the loan programs altogether - directly causing unnecessary layoffs."

111 And then there are the trolls who are the disruptors: they destroy any possibility of an engaging discussion or ideas or views that run contrary to their progressive religion.

For example, I have been reading the blog Bookwormroom for over a decade, and there are some really intelligent and insightful commenters there. Great discussions even if not 100's of comments long. However in the past year the site has been invaded by one or two trolls who are toxic and destroy most conversations. Worse, people feel the need to argue with them as if they can be persuaded, shamed, or silenced. They don't understand that to respond to a troll is to let them divert the meaningful, valuable conversation that would happen without them there.

*Note: AoSHQ troll engagement is really effective, but is unique primarily because this is not on Disqus; the trolls can't go down and kill every thread as they do with nested discussion/commenting systems.

Gretchen Whitmer is a lying slimeball. First she had to go back and review the history of Covid 19 in Michigan in her sing song baby talk since she thinks residents have the understanding of 4 year olds. Then she said that Trump told them on the phone that the Governors were "on their own". which is a bald face lie. It's been proven via other governors that were on the call. She then began to almost cry , saying that the federal government only sent Michigan enough masks, gowns, etc. for one shift at one hospital. Then she went on with talking about the models that say if Michigan stays on this trajectory, over a million Michigan residents will need to be hospitalized for Covid 19, and there is only 100,000 beds in Michigan.

I turned it off at that point, my understanding is this is a three week lockdown. We have already had almost ten days of this crap, because virtually nothing is open.

They have to stand by their decision.

Why is it that Lefty leaders and the MSM are demanding, again and again, that Trump take over -- order a nationwide lockdown, take over private businesses, etc.? Because they want Trump to be politically accountable, they want him to provide cover for their incompetence and poor decision. He is not going to do that.

As part of its state of emergency, the Nova Scotia government is restricting traffic coming into the province at all entry points, including the Trans-Canada Highway between Aulac, N.B. and Amherst.

All land, air and sea entry points are being closely managed beginning at 6 a.m. Nova Scotians should only leave the province if essential.

Anyone entering the province will be stopped, questioned and told to self-isolate for 14 days.

They are going to charge a person $1000 a day for each day not self isolating. $7500 a day for businesses, I think I heard.

Their little island could get wiped out.

I actually took a year of typing in high school, and did not do well, truth be told, but we were told to always double-space after a period, and it does look better that way. Because typewriters don't "kern". They are dumb machines that just make marks or spaces on paper in response to operator input. Computer text handlers, mostly, have some kerning built in, and adjust the word spacing to look pleasing.

Harrison was the last person to see her alive, having had dinner with Landis the night before she committed suicide.

The next afternoon, Harrison and Landis' maid discovered her on the bathroom floor. Harrison waited several hours before he called a doctor and the police. According to some sources, Landis left two suicide notes, one for her mother and the second for Harrison, who instructed his lawyers to destroy it. During a coroner's inquest, Harrison denied knowing any motive for her suicide and told the coroner he did not know of the existence of a second suicide note.

Liquid Wrench is a penetrating oil, in other words to work it needs to penetrate. Apply it in a manner that will allow gravity to let it flow into the stuck part. I'd let it wait for the better part of an hour at least. I've had mixed results with it, lot depends on how much that part has seized up.

220 Ah, two nibbles! Here's the situation.

It's for removing the venturi bolts from our 16-year-old gas cooktop. One burner is recalcitrant and we got an alarmingly high quote from the repair guy to fix it, mainly because of parts, but also because the odds are good that due to the age of the cooktop, the bolts would have to be drilled out of all the burners, thus ruining them and something else below them.

My thought is that if we could get the cooktop apart ourselves, we could remove the offending part from the one burner and then close it up. That burner would no longer work, but I could easily live with that.

All of the penetrating oils work to some extent to help loosen stuck bolts. I prefer PB Blaster or Kroil, but any of them will help. Spray it on, then tap the bolt lightly with a hammer a few times, then let it sit for a while. Most stuck bolts will come loose after a few minutes. For really bad ones, reapply and continue to wait. I've had some that took several hours to finally break loose.

If you have one of those "jet" type propane torch-lighters, apply about one-full minute of heat to the fastener in question, and then hit it with the Liquid Wrench.

The heated parts will help with the capillary action of the penetrant.

I'd send some Kroil to you through the USB port, but it'd seep out of the inntertubes by time it got to you.

Kroil, flat out works.

306 Probably good to keep this in mind: while some celebrities are random idiots/jerks, a lot of them -- probably more than we would think -- are actively coordinating with the DNC and specific Democrat leaders to get the DNC's message out.

Recall ow Jimmy Kimmell was coordinating with Schumers office when injecting sob stories about his son's heart issue during his show's monologue, selling Obamacare and slamming Trump. Recall how Obama's had a team on his admin whose job was to coordinate with Hollywood in getting his policies/talking points hyped in their tv show and movies.

There's also a JournoList (some twitter chat group) for celebrities to coordinate their progressive messaging with various DC and progressive activist people.

They are useful idiots, propagandists for the Democrats and their activist donors.

It's time for government officials to share in the sacrifices that have been forced down the throats of the American citizenry. None of these government officials should be collecting so much as a dime in pay while they deny their own communities the right to earn a living.

Enough is enough. Our nation cannot be held hostage indefinitely by government bureaucrats who continue to get paid with our money while denying tens of millions of Americans their right to work and provide for their families.

Unlike millions of American families whose businesses and livelihoods have been destroyed by the forced government closures, neither Anthony Fauci nor any of the other government bureaucrats demanding indefinite closures has missed a single paycheck.

Stopped at four other stores and found the same problem. No tp, bread , flour, or yeast. Did find some potatoes. Still, the stores were not crowded and everyone we talked to said the same thing...... "This is so stupid".
Here in our part of Indiana there have been 0, zero, cases of this Chinese lung rot. But the locusts are still strip mining the stores. It's truly unbelievable.
I really think this is gonna be done in two weeks or less. Stores are rationing and restocking. People are starting to see that there is no lock down and it couldn't be enforced anyway. Starting to understand that this is manufactured panic and hysteria. People are getting tired of the nonsense.

Yes, it works. Most "penetrating oils" work, WD40 perhaps being the least effective in that role. Might take a few seconds, might take days, depending upon the nature of the stuck parts and what makes them stuck. Heat usually helps, if it can be applied safely.

Tell us what it is that you are trying to get unstuck. Some fasteners have features that require special treatment.

366 Ah, two nibbles! Here's the situation.

It's for removing the venturi bolts from our 16-year-old gas
cooktop. One burner is recalcitrant and we got an alarmingly high quote
from the repair guy to fix it, mainly because of parts, but also
because the odds are good that due to the age of the cooktop, the bolts
would have to be drilled out of all the burners, thus ruining them and
something else below them.

My thought is that if we could get the cooktop apart ourselves, we
could remove the offending part from the one burner and then close it
up. That burner would no longer work, but I could easily live with
that.

Posted by: bluebell at March 23, 2020 11:39 AM

---

If those bolts have been in that stove for 16 years with countless heating and cooling cycles, they are most likely not coming out without being drilled out.

Odds are fair that if you put enough torque on them, you will snap the heads off without moving the bolt at all no matter how much oil you soak them with.

438 It's for removing the venturi bolts from our 16-year-old gas cooktop.

Posted by: bluebell at March 23, 2020 11:39 AM (/669Q)

Aha! It a gas cooktop, so presumably heat-resistant. Close the gas valve to the range. Using a hand-held propane torch, heat the stuck screws red-hot, if you can, and then allow to cool. They should come out after that. Heat/cool cycles help to break the rust bond between a screw and the female thread.

There is probably a YouTube tutorial on making this repair, maybe several. View them all; some are much better than others.

481 >>> Another name for this type is "concern troll."

Steps to concern trolling.
1. Announce fake conservative credentials (lifelong Republican who voted for Nixon)
2. Assert broad agreement with conservative platform points (I've always supported gun rights, restriction on abortion, reductions in entitlements etc etc etc)
3. Flash you ugly butt (BUT now I've heard)
4. Announce your handwringing, and deep deep deep concern this will *hurt* conservatism, by alienating the "middle" or is just too conservative. (I'm concerned this just goes too far)

What I've learned over the past 4 years.

"Conservative" media was actually professional concern trolls paid by communists to make damn well sure the most we would ever do is slow them down.

486 Aha!

So you think it's worth trying? After seeing a couple comments on here I started doubting whether I should try.

I don't actually want to fix that burner, because the parts are ridiculously expensive and also because the guy said that by replacing those it could cause the something-or-others on the other burners to go within the next year or so, necessitating another large repair bill.

I would be perfectly happy to continue using my cooktop less the one burner. I don't want to use it while that igniter continually clicks, however, because it sparks. I briefly wondered if I could just set a big pot of water on it and just let it click away forever until it wears itself out, but I don't think that's probably a good idea.

554 Thanks, Chi-Town Jerry and Jeff Weimer. I was thinking of looking for the parts online myself. The problem with the two offending pieces is that there is circuitry involved. This burner can go off and on intermittently to keep things at an extra-low simmer. So the two pieces alone are hundreds of dollars each.

I'll take a look though.

556 Re: Liquid Wrench

It works well - so does PB Blaster. WD40, not so much. At all.

None of these products will work in 15 minutes or an hour, generally speaking. Not on a fastener that is really rusted. Patience, measured in days, not hours. Spray the offending article and let it soak. "Shocking" the assembly with light to medium taps with a hammer works, it tends to break the rust bonds. Spray again the next day. Be patient, beat with a hammer, and let it do its magic. After several days I've seen fasteners come loose almost finger tight!

559 And fear not, everyone, I'm pretty much an idiot but I do know enough to unplug the cooktop and turn off the gas before doing anything like this.

Watched a bit of that video. Should be a piece of cake. The venturis are brass, which usually does not seize in place badly.

1. Be sure to use a six-point socket as shown in the video. A 12-point socket or adjustable wrench might round of the corners of brass hex, making removal impossible, short of drilling.

2. If you do resort to heat, allow the brass to cool completely before wrenching on it. Brass has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the (presumably) cast iron it is screwed into, so the hotter it gets, the tighter the thread. You can make this work for you by heating the part with the torch, and then applying ice cubes only to the brass, to cool it and shrink it away from the base.

560 Kurt Schlichter in his inimitable style:

"Here are some people who are useless, especially now: Performance artists, diversity consultants, magic crystal healers, sociology TAs, members of the mainstream media, and gender-unspecified entities who brew kale kombucha."

And as I was reading that, I realized. All these people are parasites living off normal people.

563 So I've been keeping the cooktop unplugged, and when I need to use it, I use that burner.
Posted by: bluebell at March 23, 2020 12:09 PM (/669Q)

Do you have to have the cooktop plugged in for the gas to flow when the burner knob is opened? Because, if not, I would tempted just to leave it unplugged, and use a barbecue lighter to light all the burners.

stays on this trajectory, over a million Michigan residents will need to
be hospitalized for Covid 19, and there is only 100,000 beds in
Michigan.

Yeah, obviously she is trying to out virtue signal crazy health authority in OH, who said about ten days ago that 100,000 people in Ohio were already sick.
========
I heard that, Ohio's health director didn't get her post by being an informed, investigative professional. She sounds like one of my female classmates back in school who had to do a report but didn't want to come across as a "brainer".

566 AOP, I tried it. The regular burners will light that way. The broken one and the other one like it (with intermittent off and on capability) won't. But it's nice to know that I can use those other burners without having that clicking noise all the time while we figure out what to do. Thank you!

repairclinic.com (and others like it) is hugely helpful, and their prices are pretty good. They often give the manufacturers PN in their listing. Still pays to cross-shop though.

Isn't it wonderful? People here are so kind.

I am going to copy and paste the helpful comments into a Word doc so my husband and I can figure out our next step. I'm just terrified of further ruining something that is only partially ruined right now. I've got to take that leap of faith, I guess.
