The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

This is an obvious point, and one that many of us have been hammering home for days. It is a sad testament to the innumeracy of the fourth estate that they could not see the obvious flaws in the data they were trumpeting.

So...two Stanford professors (and judging by their CVs they are leftists) point out the undeniable problems with terrifyingly high death rates that are calculated from the sickest cohorts. Uh...hey dumb-ass reporter...what about the many people who contracted Sino-Lung-Rot, felt crappy for a few days, then went on with their lives?

(It's behind a pay wall, but some of you may know how to get around it.)
Is the Coronavirus as Deadly as They Say?

If it’s true that the novel coronavirus would kill millions without shelter-in-place orders and quarantines, then the extraordinary measures being carried out in cities and states around the country are surely justified. But there’s little evidence to confirm that premise—and projections of the death toll could plausibly be orders of magnitude too high.

Fear of Covid-19 is based on its high estimated case fatality rate — 2% to 4% of people with confirmed Covid-19 have died, according to the World Health Organization and others. So if 100 million Americans ultimately get the disease, 2 million to 4 million could die. We believe that estimate is deeply flawed. The true fatality rate is the portion of those infected who die, not the deaths from identified positive cases.

The latter rate is misleading because of selection bias in testing. The degree of bias is uncertain because available data are limited. But it could make the difference between an epidemic that kills 20,000 and one that kills 2 million. If the number of actual infections is much larger than the number of cases—orders of magnitude larger—then the true fatality rate is much lower as well. That’s not only plausible but likely based on what we know so far.

A basic understanding of statistics, data-gathering and a few other very simple skills that most people learn in a single statistics class would have gone a very long way toward a more sober and dispassionate analysis of the current pandemic.

But that won't sell newspapers and get clicks, and that won't get rid of President Trump! And besides, from the significant amount of evidence provided over the past few years about the typical journalist's (and politician's) intellect, these basic concepts may be far beyond their intellectual capacities.

Take a look at the death rate in Israel. They began testing very early, so have a good (not perfect) sample size. And Israelis love to travel, so undoubtedly their population has brought back more than their fair share of Sino-Lung-Rot.

============

The size of the denominator is less important than the randomness of the sample.

A 1,000 sample truly random set is going to give you better data than 50,000 sample from retirement homes.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, back to random thoughts at March 26, 2020 11:06 AM (UWqZJ)

34 this is the same question i asked this morning. and have been asking for a few days.

what are the numbers screened and ruled out? what are the numbers tested and negative?
we know the total number of cases.
what are the numbers of positive who need hospitalization?
what are the number of hospitalized who actually need a ventilator and ICU?
we know how many died.

based on ALL of the above, i'd say that the mortality rate is in the .2-.4% range.

we don't HAVE to have a totally random sample to figure out how over the top we're being right now, but it's definitely hair on fire sky is falling chicken fucking going on right now.

Once this burns off and we're trying to get back to normal, the House is going to hold televised "Coronavirus Hearings" with a panel to hold the administration "accountable" for "botching" the Coronavirus Response. Get ready for summer because it's coming.

I predict it's going to be just as ugly as shampeachment, with another parade of fake experts, fools, and people with axes to grind who want book deals, and they will say *anything*. Coronavirus horror stories. Maybe even the woman who ate the fish tank cleaner at Trump's instruction. Democrats get more free election advertising.

Exactly what I came to post. The freakout model this guy and his buddies used, why in the hell did anyone take them seriously?

I have been saying since the beginning of this these two things can't be true at the same time:

1) The virus spreads like wildfire!
2) It's wayyyyyy worse than the normal flu!

Well, which is it? It's been here (Canada) since early January, and most likely before. Either:

It spreads like wildfire and we've all already been exposed, so there should be more people dying or really ill, or

It doesn't spread very well at all, and we should be able to contain it.

My business is closed because of panic and nothing more.

I dug the article up, and the 13 deaths were just at the Elmhurst Hospital in Queens alone. It's a mistake to say that extra 13 is all there is in the New York Metropolitan area...

188 AZ has 470 with the virus, but it's been showing only 8 in the hospital for the past three days. If these numbers are accurate, it doesn't look like it's getting any worse here. More people are being tested and we're getting more positives, but they don't seem to be sick enough to need hospitalization, which is obviously good. We've had kind of a cool spring here so far, but temps are going up into high 80's next week (in the desert regions), so hopefully that will help keep transmission down to manageable levels.

244 Chloroquine has antiviral effects. It increases late endosomal and lysosomal pH, resulting in impaired release of the virus from the endosome or lysosome release of the virus requires a low pH. The virus is therefore unable to release its genetic material into the cell and replicate.

Does this excite anyone else? It almost sounds like a generally applicable thing. Now we just have to make sure that the Chinese never feed this stuff to their birds, and swine, and bats, and pangolins.

318 >>I heard that the bill excludes Trump hotels from getting any bailout money is that true?

- - - -
Someone earlier mentioned that the WH requested it. This is probably why they would do so:

Democrats kept holding out these past days for. . (get this) a body that would have subpoena power to investigate all aspects of the Trump pandemic response. Unbelievable. (Impeachment mentality, still. . .) They didn't get their wish.

The Democrats are trying to build an impeachment mechanism into the stimulus bill -- they are already trying to impeach POTUS over the Wuhan flu response.

Finally admits there is enough PPE in the hospitals right now. This is a far cry from the media echoing Cuomo of yesterday screaming that hospital workers had to wear trash bags and old dew rags as masks.

Fuck.

I checked and Quest is up to 25,000/day, they and a couple of other labs are promising to get up to 300,000/week.

Germany, pop. 90 mm, is at 400,000 tests/week.

What up?

Posted by: Bandersnatch at March 26, 2020 11:28 AM

I read somewhere a couple days ago that there were tests made by government (CDC?) that were giving a ton of false positives. So those were stopped and I think President Trump enlisted non-government outlets to create good tests.

So that is where the delay in testing resulted. I think I read it in one of JJ Sefton's recent Morning Report links. He may remember posting it, if he's around. I'll go look to see if I can find it in my favorites I have been saving regarding COVID-19.

356 "Diamond Princess
680 tested positive. 8 died.
Or 1.2%."

another piece of the puzzle I'm looking for, is data on dosage of inoculum and correlation to severity of the disease. Cruise ships are called petri dishes, and I'd guess outcomes would be worse due to more exposure. (and an older clientele, but more sickly people probably don't go on cruises?)

Same with some of these super spreader events, where someone is coughing on everything, kissing hugging several victims. Big Dosage and many show up at the hospital.

But the casual touch of a low inoculum door knob, then rubbing the eye, could result in a low dosage infection (it takes longer to reach critical mass numbers starting at 1000 virus, than one million, if numbers double every? 8 hours, say.) So low dosage, body develops anti-bodies, barely notices a 99 degree fever ... and voila ... herd immunity is built.

On that note, an infection party is maybe not a good idea, but perhaps a very low dosage intentional infection would basically serve as a vaccine ... more dangerous than a normal "dead virus" vaccine, but perhaps effective for healthy people. I've heard 70% with anti-bodies is the number to achieve herd immunity for Corvid-19 .... (measles it's like 95%)

what are the numbers screened and ruled out? what are the numbers tested and negative?
we know the total number of cases.
what are the numbers of positive who need hospitalization?
what are the number of hospitalized who actually need a ventilator and ICU?
we know how many died.

based on ALL of the above, i'd say that the mortality rate is in the .2-.4% range.

we don't HAVE to have a totally random sample to figure out how over the top we're being right now, but it's definitely hair on fire sky is falling chicken fucking going on right now.

Posted by: SturmToddler at March 26, 2020 11:06 AM (8D42x)

So, gov Cuomo just answered PART of my questions for NY state.

what are the numbers screened and ruled out? UNK
what are the numbers tested and negative? UNK

we know the total number of cases. 37,258

what are the numbers of positive who need hospitalization? 5327 - i.e.14% of positive

what are the number of hospitalized who actually need a ventilator and ICU? 1290 - i.e. 3.4% of positive

we know how many died. 385 - i.e. 1% of positive

This means that the mortalitiy rate is DEFINATELY less than 1% probably in the .2-.4% range.

I've been doing more reading than usual recently. My preferences are for history and biography.

In reading biographies of Woodrow Wilson, Connie Mack, Winston Churchill, etc., I'm struck by the lack of references in the 1918-1919 periods to the Spanish influenza. The Great War, elections, the shortened baseball season (due to WWI), sure, but nothing about the flu that killed millions. Odd.

ACE inhibitors (like lisinopril) and ARBs (lije Losartan) act on the same thing the virus attaches to - ACE 2 receptors.

So one would think there's some kind of effect.

However, a lot of the severe cases are those with cardiovascular conditions. ACE inhibitors and ARBs are the most common hbp meds around.

So it's hard to know if these meds improve or worsen one's chances with the China virus.

516 There is a baseline number of flu deaths that happens in the US every year.

I have heard of numbers ranging from 20,000 to 80,000 deaths from flu per year. If we assume flu is constant throughout the year, and there are 30,000 deaths in a year, we should get 2,500 deaths from ALL flus in a typical month in the US. That is what I am calling the "baseline number".

Note that this is WITHOUT coronavirus being around.

But the flu is not constant throughout the year. It is worse in "the flu season" (aka winter months). So March numbers will be higher than August numbers.

How come we are not hearing about EXCESS deaths from coronavirus, over and above the baseline number? Damn reporters and their Journalism majors.

547 One of the items that shows up repeatedly among their scare-mongering is that "no one has a natural immunity" to this virus...blithely ignorant of the fact that no one really has a natural immunity to anything. Our immune systems are not a static device; they are on constant patrol, looking for invaders and fashioning defenses against them.

No one has a natural immunity to someone else's kidney being transplanted into them, but the immune system develops such a ferocious attack against it that the recipient is on immuno-therapy for the rest of their lives.
They apparently did not learn this back in their high school biology classes. I can hear them now: "why do I have to learn this stuff? I'll never use it."

Why aren't these people White House speech writers? Circumstances, life paths, the fact that some of our commenters couldn't live off of what a speechwriter makes.

In this time of crisis, this misallocation of resources shouldn't stop the transfer of great ideas to the administration.

Perhaps Ace could block off an easily accessible section where vetted responses and proposed speeches could be available for those who want to use them. If we should know anything by now, it's that the best brains are not in Washington.

In the case of WV's neighbor Virginia, the vast majority of the cases/fatalities are in the densely-populated areas of the DC suburbs, the Norfolk area, and the Richmond area. Last I saw, most of the the state west of I-95 hasn't seen much activity if at all, so that's a buffer for WV right there.

Plus it likely also helps that WV doesn't have the urban density issue that a number of other states have.

IIRC, the company Mueller's team pursued didn't even exist at the time of the alleged crimes.

The plan was indict a bunch of Russians to get numbers on the board, knowing that they wouldn't dare step inside of the US to defend themselves.

Unfortunately for Team Mueller, their lawyer *did* show up to court and caught the Mueller prosecutor off guard -- she had done no preparation for the trial and asked for a delay. The whole thing fell apart when the Russian defendants called their bluff.

I think shutting down the restaurants and the bars was his way of following the advice from the feds and I don't think he's going any farther and I for one am glad. Just hoping they decide to reopen schools earlier than April 30 but since most schools will have spring break in April it's probably a wash anyway.

610 Basically, you have to include all of the people infected, not just the ones we know about. Since we're only testing people who show up at the doctor with symptoms, we're missing those who never bothered going to the doctor, and those who had the virus, but never got symptoms.

Yes. This is why, if we really want to be able to estimate the denominator with any degree of accuracy, there needs to be well-constructed random sampling and, to be very complete, equally well-constructed random sampling to check for presence of antibodies (if the rumors I have read that such a test now exists are true).

Otherwise, we have a very accurate numerator with a wild guess for a denominator.

Posted by: JackStraw at March 26, 2020 12:05 PM (ZLI7S)

Both the "cases" I listed were or are a waste of time and tax payers money - posturing happens but let's not pretend that something was/is ever going to happen in either of these things.

You know, people have a right to feel that certain important justice matters aren't garnering the DOJs attention when they see these other things occupying their time. Its rather insulting to suggest they shouldn't have those concerns. The DOJ finds a way to speed cases into court when they want - Mueller's prosecutions were handed over to the DOJ early last summer, it took them practically a whole year to drop that dumbass Russian troll farm case and only when the judge wouldn't let them get around discovery.

I'm seeing the swooning happening across the nation, from people who are seeing him for the first time at the press conferences and from all of his free time on CNN and they think he's an impressive guy who is showing great leadership and cares for his state, and they wish he was their governor (because no other governor in the nation cares for his/her state, apparently). These are also people who think that everything should be locked down nationwide and the feds should be nationalizing means of production to get emergency equipment made.
