This painting shows David's ability to use accurate detail and brilliant color is obvious here. What makes the scene more powerful is the use of areas of light and heavy shadow. This forces the viewer to see the connection between the main characters. Using such a contrast is part of his style but this example is more intense and very effective.
BTW, one of David's self portraits on his Wiki page looks a lot like Inspector Dreyfus from the Pink Panther movies. Posted by: JTB at March 24, 2020 09:43 AM (7EjX1) 67

Look how David uses color to link related forms and to separate the main figures from the rest of the scene. He uses this vibrant red to frame Antiochus. The doctor and the king show concern for the prince, so they have the same color. The shape of the red they wear is similar, with the king's red form smaller and rotated 90-degrees. The line of their respective arms reach out to each other linking the left and right sides of the painting. This line parallels the line formed by Antiochus' horizontal form. All lead to Stratonice, a solid, vertical form that arrests the right-hand motion of the work. David then uses white and gold to dress the two lovers. Stratonice is the only one of the four with blue, too. It is a pale blue so as to not overpower the white, but enough to set her apart. She is the true focus of the piece.
The rest of the figures are in shadow because they are unimportant, but a royal household would have mobs of attendants hanging around, so they are there. But we are not to concern ourselves with them, so they are dark. Look at the two maids to the king's left. They are so obscure, they look incomplete. Continuing from previous thread.
Bankruptcy for many companies is not nearly as bad as some people think it is. For individuals and small businesses, it can be devestating - also liberating depending. But for large asset based organizations that have large labor costs - it is the most efficient way to reorganize as a leaner better organization. For many rank and file employees, nothing changes. The airlines and Boeing are going to lay people off. That is just a fact. But the assets and IP will remain. Now if you want to restrict ownership away from foreign entities - that is something worth considering. Posted by: SH at March 24, 2020 09:58 AM (sX1BW) 137

Kris, there's a lotta black paint in the upper left corner. Did David get bored, or run out of paint? Posted by: tubal at March 24, 2020 09:52 AM (90T4r) It's probably a flaw in the photography or in the original site where CBD got the picture. The grainy bedpost in shadow is a giveaway. It would really need to be seen in person to judge for sure what color it is. I gonna guess and say it's a really dark green in shadow. Be careful of looking at art in the internet, some site screw with the contrast or saturation. Probably the best place to see a work as true to real-life is on the actual museum's website, or an art history textbook (although these can be wrong sometimes, too). 193 the doom and gloom on airlines is actually a positive indicator for the stock and industry. Boeing is up over 20 percent over the last two days.
Posted by: Quint at March 24, 2020 10:09 AM (hHxp2) We all agree they won't be allowed to go out of business, so all the gambling now is based on speculation about the shape and nature of the bailouts. --------------- I agree with you, even if I don't necessarily agree with the bailouts. Regardless, I would expect a major airline to declare bankruptcy within the next couple years - all as a fallout from this - bailout or not. But that isn't all that atypical. We do see less airline bankruptcies, but that is in part because of the consolidation. Posted by: SH at March 24, 2020 10:14 AM (sX1BW) 222

Hope all you Morons are staying safe out there. Here in the Philly, our Soros-sponsored DA is not letting a crisis go to waste, using it as an opportunity to implement San Francisco-style measures of not arresting for "non-violent offenses" including theft, shoplifting, etc.

Trump did not say that come April 1 we are lifting all the recommendations. Geez.
There is going to be a transition back to normal, and that WILL take months. Probably have people > 60 and/or with pre-existing health conditions (from a list, probably mostly pulmonary and compromised immune systems) under a fairly strict quarantine and younger, healthier people allowed out and in groups but a strong public masking requirement. Surgical level not N95. This will hinge on mask availability. Posted by: blaster at March 24, 2020 10:28 AM (ZfRYq) 302
I agree completely! I only flew on one a handful of times, but it was luxurious, even in coach. Was on a 787 recently, it was nice, but all I could really say was that at least it wasn't a DC-9 or 737. I remember a 2 hour flight in the back end of a DC-9 where the engine howling gave me a migraine it took a day to get over. (yeah now they call it an MD-90, it's the same crappy plane)
Posted by: Tom Servo at March 24, 2020 10:23 AM (V2Yro) +++++++++++++ I used to fly in ancient MD-88s between Detroit and Syracuse. Those are loud, buzzing, fairly uncomfortable aircraft (at least they were then at the end their lives in the early aughts). I was in a 787 recently on a trip to and from Europe last year, and I enjoyed that. Better overall than the 747, I think, in terms of passenger comfort. Boeing was around $75 from 2010 to 2012
then call it $140 from 2013 through 2016 then jumped to 350+ for 2017 till recently lots of shenanigans by management, dumping money into buybacks and cashing out via their options and other loan baloney. But I'm not clear why they are bankrupt if stock returns to $75 ... unless they have been failing for years but using the stock rise to prop it up. They are US manufacturer we need to keep I guess, but they outsources to China and others. If government is bailing them out for $100B, we need some military guys put on the management team maybe. ... idk, stock market bubbles and passive investing means lots of "free money" gets mis-allocated, but for now government intervention in the trillions looks like the plan to save golden pensions and investors. Then I guess a guaranteed base income for free to those making under $100k (?), to balance the welfare for the rich. sheesh, should be under $50k that were still working pre-pandemic, welfare class already has their base income ... whatever ... good grief ... Another thing about Boeing is they've been heavily investing in new supersonic startup companies.. Lots of big players doing that too with electrics and drone startup companies too. As a result, lots and lots of engineers, especially younger ones, have been draining away from the traditional Defense and commercial aerospace players to work for these startups. That had already started happening over the past decade somewhat with people leaving to rocket/space companies. But these new aerospace players really started picking up the past three years.
With Boeing and maybe some of the other big investors crashing they might start pulling out of these startups and that will be it for them. That would suck because all these new companies were putting upward pressure on engineering salaries. Posted by: banana Dream at March 24, 2020 10:45 AM (l6b3d) 370

Wait. What did I ever do to you? There was discussion last week about Romans' use of sponges. When I went searching for those AoS comments using the word "sponge," guess what I mostly got! Yeah, you. Romans, it turns out, used sponges for many things, including bottle stoppers, which I said, which was gainsaid, and which I had to go looking for sources. Ellicott's Commentary agreed with me. Tom Servo told me, "You wouldn't cork wine with a sponge, then or now." Milady says, you know, women have been known to use sponges as a "cork." It's not that hard to figure out how they work if you think about it. It's not like you expect to set the bottle on its side and have no leaks like a corked wine bottle, but it will prevent basic splash-and-spill in transit.

When the Dems created the Dimulus bill, it was largely about making sure the government supplied money to the factions that would be putting money in the DNC coffers would be flowing. Now that they only occupy one of AOC's "branches" of government, they want that same ability to fund the DNC with taxpayer dollars, making sure their "non-profits"--doing the work of the Dems outside of government and "contributing" to the DNC coffers--are amply funded in this election year.

A week ago, many people were a bit taken aback when I was posting that this economy was about to DIE, not just slow down, if something dramatic wasn't done very quickly. Now it's obvious to all. If we can end the shutdowns in 2 weeks, we might get through this with just a depression. But Morgan Stanley yesterday forecast that American GDP is going to drop by a shocking 30% in the 2nd Quarter 2020 - yes, 30%. We were eating lunch out by the lake and someone had ordered 'drunken shrimp' where they dump live shrimp into wine. The idea is you snatch them up and pop em in your mouth while they are still alive. 439- I agree. Trump's wisdom is that he simply rejects the "nuanced" view of circles within circles and sees the world in black and white versus shades of gray. He doesn't get caught up in endless dithering and acts on a decision- it's a version of a bad plan well executed is better than no plan or a good one poorly executed.
