Coronavirus Is Making China's Model Look Better and Better The democratic world order survived the crash of 2008. It may not be so fortunate this time.They mean China's authoritarian communist "model" looks better and better. Who wrote this? No, I know the name "Hal Brands" is on the article. But who commissioned it? Is Hal Brands just a longtime fan of Chinese Communism? I know Tom Friedman is. Maybe this pining for the brutal communist Chinese tyranny is widespread in the media, where men of slight shoulders and ample waistlines perhaps have the same hero worship of Big Bad Chinese Government Bullies that little kids do of baseball players or superheroes.
"Providing" supplies? You mean selling supplies? This is propaganda on behalf of a hostile communist power -- it's deliberately written to make a simple sale sound like a charitable contribution. Bloomberg and Hal Brands weren't the only corporate shills pretending that China's routine sale of medical equipment (to countries they infected) was some kind of example of big-hearted international gallantry. The New York Times also decided to portray a sale as some kind of humanitarian aid. Why? Why did they both make this same odd choice?
The coronavirus saga is also certain to set off another round of debate on the merits of democracy and authoritarianism. The irony is abundant. It was actually the authoritarian characteristics of the Chinese system that initially allowed the virus to spread, and some democracies -- notably South Korea and Taiwan -- have done remarkably well in responding to the outbreak. Yet the fact that China subsequently claimed to have gotten a handle on the epidemic by energetically enforcing a draconian lockdown of the affected population, while the world’s leading democracy dithered in its own response, will be used by proponents of authoritarianism to argue that their system is best equipped for crisis.
More recent events are further advancing the narrative. As America struggles to test its citizens and build adequate stockpiles of basic health-care supplies, such as masks, the Chinese government (and prominent Chinese firms) are providing supplies to countries such as Italy and even the U.S. itself. Beijing has promised additional funds to aid World Health Organization programs in poor countries, and the Communist Party propaganda arm has touted these contributions for all they are worth, while also alleging that the virus somehow originated in the U.S.
This @nytimes story lauding China’s “humanitarian efforts” to combat the pandemic that it started may as well have been written by the communist party.

"They were hired by a sheikh in the UAE after he was toppled in a coup and waged an information war against his brother," one well-respected reporter who has had dealings with the company told me. "I believe they seeded the New Yorker story about the Trump Hotel in Azerbaijan with alleged connections to the IRGC. They may have been hired to look into Carlos Slim. Yet it is rare to read stories about comms shops like Fusion GPS because traditional news organizations are reluctant to bite the hands that feed them. The answer is "yes." I hate that the name of the writer escapes me, but a column published five or so years before Trump came onto the scene really pushed me off the cuck trade position and made me solidly anti-globalist. The author posed questions along the lines of "exactly how much video of factories being shuttered in the Rust Belt aired, how many interviews did you see with people working their last days as auto makers?" The answer was "none," and the author concluded China and the American corporations that whore to the PRC squelched this type coverage. It struck me as totally true.

Panama Papers was the name given to the leak of millions of pages of client information from a Panamanian law firm called Mossack Fonseca. Basically, the law firm was helping the world's elite hide and shuffle money through offshore shell companies and other exotic entities.
It included power brokers from governments and businesses around the world and included some of the wealthiest people in the world. So naturally the media made it a one week story and then buried it.
But investigations have been ongoing in various countries ever since. That link I provided outlined some of them but there are more.
And this is just one aspect. Politicians have been selling us down the river for decades and it's not just US politicians.

I just called the range.

Three days now seems like an eternity. I think shit's for real now.
We're in SW FL but 25 miles south of the epicenter of spring breaky-ness on the Gulf coast, Fort Meyers Beach. Today, Naples closed all its public beaches and so did Fort Meyers.
Local governments have been tepid in their reactions to all this, and as a result, most everyone goes to work as usual, and almost every single privately owned restaurant has remained open, supposedly operating under some table spacing guidelines and supposedly serving only half capacity. I've seen enough to know there is little compliance.
Our problem is we have about a million people here who are snowbirds, many of them in rental units, all of them old like 60+, and the great majority of them eat out at least once per day.
That is why such a limp action by government to close restaurants. It's not so much that they'll deprive the snowbirds of their lunches and dinners, it's that the snowbirds will pack up their SUVs and head north.
But again, shit's getting real. The steps being taken aren't happening all at once, they are coming one at a time.
First the "guidelines" about bars and "nightclubs," then the restaurant "please consider" rules, now the beach closings.
Sooner or later, sooner I hope, they will mandate restaurant closings except for scheduled takeouts or deliveries, and the snowbirds will be relegated to takeout, and eating it in front of the TV in the rental.
Let's hope they can all get out before air travel closes.
I heard the stupid PA Guv closed down all the restrooms along the PA turnpike and wherever else they had state-controlled rest stops along interstates.
What a buffoon. It did not last long once someone thought it out.

Last week, a WHO expert on a news interview was discussing this drug and said the actual production cost per pill was about 5 cents.
Pulling out a corporate officer of one of these drug manufacturing companies into a public square and hanging them for everyone to see works for people, just like it works for crows that want to steal the freshly planted seed in a field.

How does that compare to Valley Fever? I had it as a child, the very week my dad was retiring from the USAF as a squadron commander.
I was 11 years old, and in addition to the Valley Fever, developed pneumonia. I remember hearing my mom crying in the hall talking to the base doctor.
I was two years recovering, and looked like a victim of starvation. It was bad enough, but middle school girls later drove me to want to kill myself.

They couldn't transition to new models post war fasst enough that would meet specs. Curtiss-Wright still supplies aircraft parts, but no longer makes aircraft.
During WWII they couldn't get beyond the P-40 design when other companies were coming up with faster aircraft with greater range. The SB2C Helldiver was one of their last military aircraft and "The Beast" had a lot of problems.

The reaction is justified, if for example, we KNOW that there were 30 million deaths IN CHINA. Which I doubt (that 'we' know) because our intelligence services have been too busy framing Trump for treason to pay attention the nation's enemies.
If we knew that, we might project a similar (divide by 4 for size maybe more for not being burdened with state run medicine) result here which would make the action taken seem reasonable. I agree with you that based on what is publicly known, we're just not there.

China, by a wide margin. Islam has some political/financial oomph behind it (notably from Qatar and Turkey, and to a lesser degree (nowadays) Saudi Arabia), but it is mostly informal and more focused on Europe than here.
The Chinese are *much* more vast, well funded and - crucially - sophisticated.

I think one way or another they will survive. Trump has already said he wanted to make sure Boeing makes it.
Trump understands as well as anyone in DC that we can't afford to lose some of our core industries as we did with steel and drugs. It's a national security issue as he has been saying for years and as we are all now seeing with China threatening to withhold drugs from us.
I wouldn't be surprised if Trump extracts his pound of flesh, though.

they faced a similar crises about twenty years ago. The unions almost broke them and the management was a joke. Every time they started to rise a bit the unions would strike and crush the stock. They have had pretty smooth flying for a couple of decades now, but now they are really looking bad.
I dont' know if Airbus is as big a rival though as it was twenty years ago. I don't follow it much. The thing with BA is there really is no other option that i can think of . But damn, it looks like they need to clean house but good. Just another screw up.

This is what I am saying is very likely misleading.
For cold and flu, a small decrease in how well the virus transmits will kill the spread simply because the spread was already a marginal thing
In a population that gets the virus every year, there is a limited number of people who can be infected each year, so after a couple months the new cases die down. This is helped by the weather, but think of it as a new shoe store on a block full of shoe stores - the market is already saturated (in my analogy, people shopping at other stores are those with immunity. I am saying the shop operates on a knife edge of profitability.) Small change in market can push the store into the red.
For virus, it gets going in winter as soon as conditions are right and there is opportunity, but it is always pretty marginal opportunity. The virus (colds and flu) all shift each year, and each year population changes so each year more and more people can be infected. But in winter it is pushed over the edge and can spread. In spring, a small change in transmission rate kills the epidemic. Not so for a new virus where the only variable is the weather.
There is math behind this, but that is the simplified text explanation.

The end won't happen tomorrow. But "illegal" gatherings can begin at homes of people with large properties, for picnics and performances by local musicians. Will the police (i.e., the mayors and governors) arrest people who gather in groups of more than 10 on private property? I hope we don't get to find out. Elected officials know what side their bread is buttered on.
The worst possible situation is elected officials relaxing or removing closure orders, and the people being too sacred to go out. I do not believe that will happen, though.

Sooner or later, sooner I hope, they will mandate restaurant closings except for scheduled takeouts or deliveries, and the snowbirds will be relegated to takeout, and eating it in front of the TV in the rental.
Let's hope they can all get out before air travel closes.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the state will be taking more extreme measures to stop the spread of the new coronavirus.
All K-12 public schools will remain closed until at least May 1. Holcomb also ordered all non-public schools to close. The date for closure could be extended through the academic year.

Almost like CA is part of the US.
Yet when illegal aliens - carrying disease, in many many cases violent criminals, the foot soldiers of int'l criminal gangs, repeat offender rapists and child molesters, and the like - are for some reason collared in CA, the state doesn't allow coordination with ICE to detain and deport said aliens. So in many cases they go on the road, carrying their evil and mayhem to the rest of the country.
But now - now - CA is part of the US again.
Like magic.
I'd despise Newsome and his voters, if I gave them any thought at all (hat tip: Rick Blaine).

The death rate for the elderly is normally elevated above the general population even for the healthy ones. At least, some of the elderly deaths will be Wongly attributed to Wuhan until good testing and data collection regimens are in place! Even then I'm not sure I trust the CDC's reporting.

I think the Deep State has settled at or around 18k, which would be below where it was when Trump was elected.
If it goes lower than 18k then we are staring Armageddon right in the face as pretty much every savings, retirement and pension fund goes tits the fuck up.
