Is It Time to #CancelChina?
Amidst the 24/7 breathless media coverage and calls for politicians to "do something," one fundamental question still needs to be addressed forthrightly and in the open: Who did this to us and what to do to prevent it from happening again?
The question about assigning agency and blame is pretty straightforward to answer: The communist Chinese state, which for more than three decades has been draining capital and knowledge from the West, benefiting from our greed and myopia, has just let loose a virus that in the coming months is about to effectively paralyze Europe and the United States and bring severe pain, both human and economic on the world....
As a result of all this, the West is now shutting down, at least for a while. The ultimate cost to the world, in terms of new government debt, failed businesses, and human lives and suffering, is difficult to quantify at this point. But there are indications that the fallout from the Wuhan Virus could be transformative.
We must acknowledge our own complicity in what is now unfolding. The belief that globalization, through the radical centralization of market networks, was the unavoidable path forward has been exposed as a grave, near-delusional miscalculation. The offshoring by corporations of supply chains to China has not only eviscerated communities that were previously reliant on manufacturing jobs, but has also brought with it an unprecedented level of vulnerability and fragility to our economies. The populist revolts that have wracked Western democracies for the past several years are in part rooted in the pain that these dislocations have caused. Worse yet, for the past three decades, this offshoring process has favored an adversary that is determined to replace us as the hub of global economic and military power and place itself at the new normative center of the world.
Which turns out to be the cradle of apocalyptic plagues, to boot.
We cannot continue to pretend that free trade with China has no consequences, as has been the typical fall back on the right. Perhaps we are reaching an inflection point, though? I�m seeing more and more conservatives who originally scoffed at taking on China economically softening to the idea of getting tough with the Communists.The truth is, claims that the trade war "only hurts the U.S." have always been completely false. Yes, trade wars have financial costs for both sides, but there�s no doubt China has taken the brunt of the damage so far. The inability to admit that has been a frustrating point of contention in discussions on the matter because it supposes that we simply punt on the leverage we�ve gained.
Things have escalated though, with the questions of how to proceed no longer just centering around China going after the NBA last year, which is where you started to see some breaks in the conventional wisdom form. We face a world-wide pandemic of Wuhan coronavirus due to the lying and incompetence of the Chinese, a country that we�ve wrapped so much of our well being into with little care for the long term consequences.
China-skeptical conservatives, despite being previously berated by many on their own side, were right all along.

A lot of stores are doing that now. I was talking to a guy who works in the local supermarket he said it's to clean and give them more time to restock. They've even brought in outside help to help stock shelves. I got an email from them today saying "We're hiring!"

Well, they may be ghouls, but I think it's a legitimate concern for some folks that they won't be able to see their loved ones before they die. I mean, priests aren't even getting into hospitals with an immense amount of pushback and people get into visit loved ones in nursing homes. It doesn't mean that millions will die; It's just that people want to say goodbye to their loved ones and often are very sorry when they couldn't get there.

Seems to me there's a great deal of room in our economy for goods that are CLEARLY manufactured in America being sold alongside the China stuff.
Let's decide whether we're willing to pay more for it. Right now though, most items we buy, we don't get the choice. It's cheap China stuff or nothing.

And unemployment means a lot of young men turning to crime either from desperation or boredom, which means more money spent on police, and more authoritarian law enforcement. Oh, and your paychecks are smaller because you're competing against more workers who will do your job cheaper. And the cheap goods you buy aren't any better quality, and in fact may be worse.

The closings and restrictions have a specific date where they will be revisited.
So this isn't open-ended as some claim.
In Michigan, it's the first week of April. By then, we will have had two weeks of tracking to see where things are.
If the cases are stable or falling, than it will have worked, the spread will have been checked, and we'll be able to lift the restrictions.
Conversely, if it keeps jumping up, the measures will likely have to be tightened or abandoned. It will depend.
I do find it weird that Michigan's restrictions haven't been in place for a week and people are expecting Road Warrior societal collapse.

Like I said, all I have to go on is the CDC numbers from things like H1N1 and seasonal flu. For those viruses, the average daily cases was 160,000+.
We only have 220,000 cases total for this COVID-19.
Yet, we went from normal to shut down the country within about a week. Over 220,000 total worldwide cases.
If our system could handle an average of 160,000 cases per day of H1N1 and seasonal flu, why in the world are we so freaked out about a few thousand cases of COVID-19?

Meanwhile, for more direct measures, I suggest "suspending" debt payment on any government securities currently held by China.
Why send them money only to insist they send it back as compensation for unleashing the plague on us only for them to laugh in our faces?
Much the same as I suggest that rather then sending tax money to everyone during the economic shutdown, the government simply cut and suspend tax (and other fee) collection, cutting out the middle man in letting people have more money in their pocket. Even cutting more indirect fees, like all those phone, television, and internet taxes and fees, not to mention gas taxes, and various sin taxes, will go a long way to reducing both everyday costs on people, and long-term corporate compliance expenses.

That means that this thing was floating around for months before any travel restrictions or any "social distancing" were implemented. And if spreads this fast even with the things we're doing now then why would believe that it wasn't spreading even faster back then?
It didn't start spreading in America when we discovered it here, that's childlike thinking. I assume that millions of Americans already have or have gotten over the virus months ago.

We can't look at the numbers in a vacuum. Just like Sharyl Atkinson's research showing that pretty much all the 100+ deaths in the USA have been to the elderly and those with health conditions.
Recall H1N1 where a national emergency was not declared then until 4 months after WHO declared it a pandemic.
There were 22 million cases in the USA between April and Oct of 2009. 22 million. In 6 months. And we didn't shut down.
I am just baffled by what number someone saw that said we needed to shut down the country a few days after the WHO declared a pandemic.
This does not add up.

We are going to rebuild our domestic pharmaceuticals industry.
That means jobs.
Lots of jobs.
New factories to be built and people must be found to work in them. Good wages for all.
China's trade surplus will disappear.

The only reason jobs were moved to China was that the regulatory environment in this country made it economically viable.
People can talk all they want about cheap labor, but, it still takes quite a bit of time and investment capital for a new factory to be brought online.
And, of course, our government wasn't smart enough, or didn't care enough, to wonder if wholesale shipping of our entire manufacturing sector to a communist country was a good idea.
Oh, and I'd like to know what fool thought it was a good idea to have China make all of our pharmaceuticals.
I understand manufacturing but our drug industry moving to China? Absolutely insane.

It is closer to a "cold" which means it can mutate more rapidly. You know how long we've been trying to cure the common cold?
So we are not dealing with a 'flu strain, but rather a *lethal common cold*.

She closed the schools only after the universities went to online classes AND parents were pulling their kids out in such numbers that they would have to shut down anyway.
She shut down bars because other states were doing it and they had confirmed cases transmitted through a Burger King and movie theater.
If she'd been pro-active she'd have done it all at once, so she blames Trump because that's why she got elected - on an anti-Trump mid-term wave.
This too shall pass, though. We haven't even gone a week yet. The panic buying will stop, people will adjust and things will calm down.
