The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

I'm old enough to remember that during the Cold War years, our media had developed the annoying habit of presenting the "news" precisely the way the USSR would want them to. You could tune to English language broadcasts on shortwave radio from Radio Havana and Radio Moscow and hear the exact same take that you could read in the NY Times or ABC News. It was always so tediously predictable: boo Reagan, he's a bad guy, he's insane, he's a war-monger, the Russians want peace so let's give them everything they want, etc.

That whiny-ass Sting tune from the 80s, Russians, captures this phenomenon perfectly, only he's doing it ironically. If the KGB *paid* Sting to write that crap song, it wouldn't be any different than it actually is.

That was then, this is now.

Trump is being vociferously attacked for calling a virus that orignated in China a Chinese virus. My favorite line is, it's not a Chinese virus, it's a human virus. A lot of social media journalists and other Trump haters are working very hard carrying the ChiCom's water. In fact, there's not a dime's worth of difference between our garbage MSM's coverage of the Wuhan Virus and China's Xinhua News Agency or Global Times right now.

Back in the 80s, it all revolved arounding hating Reagan. And now, it all revolves around hating Trump. Even if it means aiding those who are trying to destroy us.

Just once, I would like to see the MSM actually supporting America instead of acting as propagandists for the other side.

But some things never change.

(h/t John Hayward)

Wednesday's celebs: The quintessential 20s flapper chick, Louise Brooks, who starred in the classic film from 1929, Pandora's Box with Francis Lederer. Brooks' movie career fizzled during the 1930s and she eventually slid into alcoholism and prostitution. She had some success as a movie writer when her films were rediscovered in the 1950s.

Lots of empty shelves, and limits on what you could buy. What a nightmare this is becoming. I don't know what kind of spike we'll see in virus deaths, but I'd be surprised if we don't also see a spike in suicide deaths too, because people are getting very stressed by this shit.

Out of curiosity because I haven't been following the NY outbreak closely, where is the problem? Is it downstate only, or is it also upstate/central/southern tier? Because if it is only downstate (which would not surprise me), then most of the state (geographically) is being punished because of it.

I mention this only because it is a smaller-scale version of what a national lockdown that these governors will be agitating for will be.

Get control of this situation because you have blue state and some red state governors issuing ELE orders that are going to crater this nation.

178 By the way, all these rescue links in the sidebar have screwed up my life.

We have four, two pairs older and younger. The older pair basically took over when they moved in, the female is separation-anxiety central, has destroyed the door casings in our bedroom when we lock them up, done a pretty fair job on the doors and window trim too. We've probably got $20K in damage and paintwork around here from them. Big boy is a pure couch potato who can be out the window killing a raccoon before you even knew one was in the yard.

The younger pair had/have different glitches. Little rat-terrier boy is a burrowing dog and will still occasionally snap if you try to get him out from under the covers on the bed. Little (not so little anymore) bulldog is terrified of loud noises and sometimes of the elder female who's basically alpha in the pack.

Play behavior: the elder two will play very aggressively and always have, they've been together since puppyhood. The little boy will join in and the elder female kinda likes him, big boy wishes he'd go away but never does anything about it. I can see the 'oh no, here comes Paolo' look on his face.

179 You guys will get a kick out of this. We had neutering surgery scheduled next week for our young lab. The vet hospital just called me and said they needed to reschedule because "The government has ordered us to stop elective surgeries.". But they could do it the week after. I called bullshit and asked for a link to any government order to stop elective surgeries on animals. Especially one that only stopped them for week and then its totally cool to do them the week after. Shockingly, they couldn't provide any evidence of an order that doesn't exist. So, I LOLGF'ed them and cancelled the surgery entirely. Benny has the last laugh.

180 I thought I'd lay this down here.

I went through the latest numbers and as of 8:00 AM PST:

USA has 14,437 CHINESE CORONA VIRUS CASES.
13 COUNTRIES OF THE EU (NOT ALL OF THE COUNTIES IN THE EU) HAVE A COMBINED TOTAL OF 194,584 CHINESE CORONA VIRUS CASES.
The USA has more people than the 13 countries I reviewed.
So in summation Orange Man Bad POTUS Trump is MORE THAN THIRTEEN TIMES better in his response than all the other 13 countries' leaders. But he is the guy that screwed up according the imbeciles in the media. And the numbers for deaths from CHINESE CORONA VIRUS IS EVEN MORE IN FAVOR OF TRUMP.

296 It's not deaths, it's the very high transmissibility and the high severe rate needing hospitalization from 3-6 weeks. There is no vaccine. You can get "reinfected" according to China, South Korea, and Israel. It affects the 20-40 year olds. Mild cases include everything from no symptoms to pneumonia. At least 20 to 30 percent suffer lung scarring. America ranks close to the top in percentage of people with Comorbidity with 108 million, which this virus hits the hardest.

I could go on, but at this point folks are either on the side of saving the materialist and hyper consumption based on economy, or people are on the side of saving humanity and their countrymen's lives.

I agree - some people here thought I was being too negative at the beginning of the week, but now everything I feared is happening - every mid level business in the nation is shutting down, and now 20% unemployment looks like a low ball number.

What gripes me most is that all of these politicians and "health experts" are saying we have to base our decisions on their models and computer projections, and yet not a single one of them cares about the Economic Projections which show total collapse for the nation within a month or two. Their "plan" is simply to let it all collapse and then have the Government take over everything.

333 2009, H1N1.

From APR through OCT, when Obama declared national emergency --- 4 months after WHO declared it a pandemic in JUN --- these were the stats in the USA:

Cases: 21,632,000 (3,090,000 per month)
Hospitalizations: 97,536 (13,934 per month)
Deaths: 3,893 (556 per month)

All numbers from the CDC.

TIMELINE: https://bit.ly/2WuOgKN

Official Numbers: https://bit.ly/2Ww6JH1

Someone needs to reminding people in this country of these numbers to get some freaking perspective here. If we don't shut down the economy and "social distance" over 556 deaths per month, we certainly do not go hysterical over, at last count, 218 total deaths over 2-3 months in USA.

Life sucks. It is not fair. People die.

But the sad fact is that there is a cost benefit analysis that needs to be done here.

How many more people will die because the economy tanks and they don't have the money they need, then will die from the Coronas?

Same type of analysis is done by the Military all the damn time. Is it worth it to take that hill?

Perfect example of the fake Moral Posturing that all socialists and communists have always relied on. IN FACT - if you destroy the ability of people to feed themselves and to stay in their houses, by allowing their jobs to be destroyed, YOU DESTROY THOSE PEOPLE!!! China officially holds about $1.1 trillion in Treasuries. There is probably more - maybe a half a trillion - in other overseas holding groups (based in places like Norway - nice neutral and not officially connected to China).

Repudiating their Treasury paper would just about pay for the bailout, but not quite and massive damage to our credibility to foreign lenders.

Sadly, China no longer owns enough paper to make it really worth it. They drew down a lot of it during their recent economic upheavals of the past decade, and the Fed bought most of it during QE which is why interest rates didn't spike.

I'm not sold on this idea.

China fucked up. Really badly.

America taking them to the woodshed financially, especially after Trump has spent three years making the case that they are bad actors and getting a surprising number of people to join him on that, and we're not talking about a country just reneging on debt. It's something else.

It could still scare off other foreign investors, but I'm just not convinced that Japan will see the action as America simply walking away from an obligation it doesn't want to pay.

This is a debate I've been having with many on the global warming sites for years - when is being cautious, being TOO cautious? It brings up the entire issue of cost/benefit analysis, which our society appears to no longer be capable of.

Warmists, and leftists in general, do not seem to understand they are basing their claims on an old intellectual argument known as "Pascal's Wager" - especially ironic since they reject the conclusion Pascal reached. What they have no concept of is that Pascal's Wager only applies when Costs of two courses of action are Equal - then of course, you take the more cautious path. BUT for all real world situations, benefits have to weighed against costs.

Perfect example of the fake Moral Posturing that all socialists and communists have always relied on. IN FACT - if you destroy the ability of people to feed themselves and to stay in their houses, by allowing their jobs to be destroyed, YOU DESTROY THOSE PEOPLE!!! And you destroy ALL of them, not just the few who would have gotten sick!

And of course the Communist then says, well that won't happen because the State will take over all housing, and the State will provide all income, and the State will provide all goods, forever.

433 The media is a part of the left now. Taken over years ago by the narrow minded and hate filled who wanted to make a difference.

By that they meant they would take down someone or some institution. Destruction. Deconstruction. The incessant drive to destroy what they hate because it's so much better than them and everything they stand for and wish for.

And they found some fellow haters in the form of the Democrat party which has hated the United States and the Republic. They tried to destroy it before it got started. Then they tried to destroy it with slavery. Then they tried to destroy it with taxes. Then they tried to destroy it with a war. Finally they decided to destroy it from the inside by taking over all the necessary pillars holding the edifice up.

Yet somehow the idea of our Republic has stood all they've thrown at it because it's not a thing or even an idea. It's a driving desire for freedom to be what we want. To strive for what we want. To attain what we have earned. To let no one else tell us what we can or cannot have or think or do.

We will win. We MUST.

Yup, this has always had a real problem with confirmation bias.

They did not have enough tests, so they only tested those who got REALLY sick. If you had mild cold symptoms or even flu like symptoms, you didn't even go to the Doctor, and thus were never tested.

Its like the CDC Flu numbers. Year to date been something like 22,000 deaths attributed to flu, out of 275,000 who tested positive for flu.

Now, there are MILLIONS of Americans who have had the flu this year, but were never tested.

But if you go JUST by the CDC stats? It looks like the Flu has about an 8% DEATH RATE!

But what do you think all of these sequester rules are about? They are about keeping people separated and slowing the spread, buying time until a treatment can be developed. That really is what this is all about.

541 This. Who is being tested? The statistics are all very vague, because the data set is vague. That doesn't mean we should not pay attention to them, but it does mean that we ought to be circumspect.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at March 20, 2020 11:42 AM (sHVgQ)

Presumably they are only testing people who present with symptoms. I don't even know for sure if the present tests can find the WuFlu markers in a person without symptoms. In any case, why waste test materials and time on apparently well people? (except, perhaps, in a limited setting intended to determine the efficacy of such testing)

546 I've often thought defaulting on our debt would be a feature, not a bug
-- as in no other country would risk buying our debt, so the fed.gov
would have to stop creating it.

Yep. The biggest problem of government isn't actually the portion of our wealth it steals but what it uses that money for.

Imagine a world where the government didn't have the resources to ban plastic bags or force Christians to bake gay cakes because it only has enough money to do things like pave the roads and print the currency....

I want to live in that world.

548 One reason for the world wide panic is because the Director of W.H.O. gave out statistics that were overblown.

The true death rate won't be known until the season is almost over. You cannot compute the rate at the beginning because the deaths will be larger at first while the number of people infected will be unknown for quite a while.

Yep, agree. I think we are going to see one of two things within #2weeks:
1) several 100K cases of Wuhan Flu with a big percentage critically ill and about 2K dead
2) it fizzles out and these politicians scramble to take credit

I initially thought it was all total bull$h!t but with President Trump talking about invoking the Defense Production Act to get additional manufacture of ventilators, Vice President Pence's requesting industrial-rated N95 masks be donated to hospitals and seeing the big campaign by the Chicoms (and their running-dog lackeys) to deflect blame, I'm beginning to suspect that they inadvertently unleashed something pretty nasty on the world.

I think we will probably do a staggered soft reopen, in one or two weeks (praying)

we may have to do more shutdowns in the future, but hopefully they will be local ones as hotspots crop up

Yeah the early info was nuts. It turns out the virus isn't nearly as infectious, doesn't last as long on surfaces, or kill as many as originally believed. As more info comes out, I think we'll see how outrageously overblown this was.

573 Am I the only one who thinks we are totally and completely fracked?

I don't see much of a plan except "everyone stay home until we have 4 bajillion ventilators". OK, so 4 or 6 months from now, what, everyone just goes back to work? At what job? The employers have all gone bust. Are they just supposed to start right up? We're down and out for a long time.

I don't think the infectious disease people can see outside their laser focus on keeping people from catching this. It's like fighting the Battle of the Bulge in WWII with zero casualties.

I'm theoretically at risk based on my age - so is my wife. And, I've had pneumonia in the past. Our son passed away several month ago so this is a somewhat specious argument, but I can tell you in other circumstances if I was given a choice between me catching this and my son (and potentially grandchildren) having a future, I'll give the kids the chance for a future. I'll be the old folks who can understand the economy would say the same.
